  • Is it just me or is it pretty silly to pay for a program for pirating movies?

If you're going to pirate stuff you might as well just download the movie and/or pirate this software.

    • Only affect half your conscience.

It's not just for piracy. Also for playing blu rays on linux or other open source os.

Yes, and region free playback of DVD and Blu-ray, and for other work. I've never pirated and I have it and use it. Recently I used it to convert a HD DVD I purchased to a blu-ray, one of the few that never got a blu-ray release or even a digital HD release. I've used it to subtitle foreign films.

I don't find these apps necessarily as morally objectionable as piracy. Firstly they allow personal backups and secondly they also allow you to play back movies from other regions without having to buy a second Bluray drive purely so you can maintain hardware for multiple regions. The media companies still get your money if you buy the movie and use these apps for various functions, which is often more than can be said for torrenting.

What the law allows you to do is another matter.
