Google Pixel C Developer Discount 25% off - 32GB $524, 64GB $622

1010

As the title says, Google is offering 25% off the Pixel C tablet. On the 64GB model, this is a AU$207 saving off RRP. No discount on the keyboard accessory though.
Now, let's not get into a discussion as to the merits of Android as a tablet OS. If you've bought into the Android ecosystem, this is a good price on what seems to be a premium tablet, especially following the March firmware update which fixed some of the initial software issues.

        • @dsgfh: The person that I was answering was asking and was comparing this device to an 8 inch device that's half the weight as this tablet.

I do agree that Google support is good and I agree that the tablet has amazing SoC (I did upvote the deal). That said, 800g is around the weight of a 12 inch tablet available in the market (iPad Pro, NotePro 12.2 etc), 519g is double the weight as some of the 8 inch tablet available currently. 10 inch tablets are almost always bigger than a 8 inch tablet. Therefore I wouldn't recommend someone who is thinking about 8 inch tablet this tablet.

I don't understand why you've replied to me twice with similar comments, when my first reply was just simply that for the person who was asking about comparison between this and a 8 inch tablet. I gave my opinion based on facts (weight and size) and from my personal experience (how, for me, 12 inch tablet almost cannibalised the usage of a 10 inch tablet whereas 8 inch tablet was light and portable enough to tag along to places). What do you want me to say, a 10 inch tablet that is 519g alone, 900g with the keyboard is better as a portable device compared to a 250g 8 inch tablet?

        • @Oversimplified:

10 inch tablets are almost always bigger than a 8 inch tablet.

Wouldn't 10 inch tablets always be bigger than 8 inch tablets? :)

I think the take-home is, different people use their tablets differently, so different tablets will suit different people. Wow, I used "different" four times in that last sentence.

  • I am thinking of getting a new tablet after my original Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 have serious battery problems. Just wondering whether 32Gb is enough for Android tablet these days? Extra $98 for extra 32Gb seems steep.

    • U can best answer this yourself. How much space did u have on your Note and did u use it up? 32gb is plenty if u don't store a bunch of movies, photos, music, games on the tab

    • Just bought the 64gb one.

Checking my phone, I already used up 32gb for both internal and sd card. I didn't even notice how much I use until just now.

  • I would suggest you guys to go for Nexus 9. If you are after stock Andriod experience.

    • The general sentiment for the Nexus 9 doesn't seem very positive.

For this price for the pixel c I wouldn't even consider the nexus 9.

    • This

    • Pixel C = $622 (after 25% discount)
      keyboard = $199
      Total =====> AU$821/-

      Surface 3 (64GB) AU$699.00
      Type cover AU$179.99
      Total ————> AU$878.99

No point getting a Surface 3 if you're after apps and games that are only on Android.

But if it's for work, I'd personally go with the Surface 3.

  • So with the keyboard on, it weights around a kilo(!)…That's approaching Surface Pro territory. It's a good device but the flaws are annoying on the software side, plus it sits practically nowhere when it comes to utility and cost balancing each other out.

  • I'm waiting for the apple press conference next week, if nothing looks that interesting i'm jumping on this deal. Been looking for a tablet for a while and i'm keen on what android N might bring.

    • The new Apple iPad Pro mini (or whatever they are going to call it) looked nice from the rumours I've heard. According to the rumours it did look like they've reduced the size of iPad Pro into the 9.7 inch tablet (i.e. Smart connector thingy, 4 speakers and Apple Pencil (rumours were split about the Apple Pencil)) + decent camera for facetime. While I am not sure how much of the rumours are true, it did look interesting. Not sure when they are going to release it or announce it though.

      • Damn if all those rumors are true i'd be scared to know the price of the new ipad! They are having an ipad press conference on Monday i believe so will see then i suppose. I'd say the the smaller ipad pro is going to cost quite a bit.

        • :P I heard one rumour that was saying that it'd be priced similar to iPad Air (the rationale behind it was that iPad sales have been declining and therefore Apple is going all in). I personally think it'd cost a lot if it is like an iPad Pro.

        • Another rumour I've heard were saying USD $600. So I assume it'd be near $900 in AUD (conting in GST).

        • @Oversimplified: Ouch! That would just about push me away from buying one at that price. Oh well pixel C would be a good alternative.

        • @krammis76: Yeah, it does offer fair bit of other "stuff" like stylus and 4 speakers (at least the rumours suggest they would), but if they do cost USD $600, I don't think I'd be interested in it too much. Besides, it'd be heavy as well, if they do use A9X (better performance usually means it needs bigger battery for the device). It seems that Apple might release this as another product line (so they might sell iPad Air 2 alongside this).

        • Entryy level 32GB model is $899 & $229 for the keyboard. Amusingly already being reported by gizmodo as "surprisingly reasonable". If you're already in the apple ecosystem & really want a faster tablet with a stylus pencil then sure.

Pretty happy with paying $622 for my 64GB pixel c & $199 for the keyboard.

  • Mmmm that X1 gpu… So tempting but I want an Nvidia Shield Tab for that

    • I know right! I wish it was easy to get the Nvidia stuff here without having to get them from overseas. I'd be all over them if they sold them here.

      • :( boo nvidia boo

Just thought I'd report back for anyone interested having received my tablet & keyboard yesterday. I'm touch-typing this on the new keyboard with reasonable accuracy, although I'm struggling a touch with the position of the left shift, a & s keys (but I usually use a DAS Keyboard 4 Ultimate).

Shipping was very quick. Ordered Monday & arrived on Thursday.

I gave the tablet a full charge & did setup yesterday, and I'm at 42% battery this morning with 4.5hrs SOT, including running ANTUTU and 3D Mark benchmarks last night. Doze works great on tablets, and I only lost 1% battery overnight.

So far I'm not seeing any issues with the keyboard or the wifi that were reported by the media. I'd say that the March updates have gone a long way to resolving them. I got 91Mbps down and 63Mbps up on the office network on speedtest.net yesterday arvo through my Kogan AC Wireless router. No dramas with coverage around my house, but I've got 2 AP's so it wasn't expected.

The keyboard is far and away superior to the Surface Pro 3 type cover. Less flex, and the key spacing really helps with touch-typing. I haven't tried the new Pro 4 cover to comment.

The screen is bright & clear, although there's some slight colour-shift in one corner that I've noticed. Common on many LCD displays though due to back lighting. Samsung's OLED displays have an advantage there. The display aspect ratio isn't as good for media consumption as the old Nexus 10 was, with black bars guaranteed on just about anything you watch.
Reading in portrait or landscape on the other hand seems excellent. I think it'll be great for reviewing documents.

Downsides? The edges are a little too square, so you really notice them in your hand. Even the keyboard on my lap at the moment, with the angle of my left hand the corner is poking into my palm. Won't be an issue on a flat surface though.

For me the weight is fine. At 917g for the combination it's 3 grams lighter than my N10 + folio case. Definitely not the lightest thing out there, but I'm going to appreciate the extra SOT the 9000mAh battery brings compared to the smaller batteries you see in lighter devices.

For those who want an android tablet, highly recommended. For those who live in an iOS or Windows world, this doesn't do anything so substantially different that you'll want one instead of your current choice.

    Cheers,
    Mike

    • Thanks Mate.

Looks like its something that will not add value to my life but damn the temptation is very high.

    • Have you developed any scratches on your screen or outer casing from the keyboard?

It seems crazy to slide the keyboard across the screen to separate it from the main unit - numerous people have reported scratches due to this process :-(

      • +1

So far so good it seems, but yes I share your concern. I've ordered a skinomi tempered glass protector for it just in case.

        • Thanks for the reply :-)

The screen looks like it needs protection, but I am even worried about scratching the back of the case (slding the keyboard on/off), I don't like things that looked scuffed and worn…

        • @oz-dave: The Skinomi tempered glass screen went on very easily without any bubbles or dust (I like the addition of a sticky sheet to pick up the last of the dust after cleaning). My alignment isn't millimetre perfect, but it's still entirely on the surface of the screen. You can see the hint of the glue around the edges if you hold it at the right angle, but definitely recommended.

Thanks, OP. I finally caved in to temptation after banking my savings from the recent Amaysim deal:)

  • does anyone here happen to have an extra dev discount code lying around? would like to purchase a pixel but rrp is a tad too steep

  • This one is expired. Can OP mark it as expired? Also, the code supplied to me before it expired is no longer usable. It gives "Your code is already redeemed" message - while since I never revealed the code to anyone, I assume it means that it has expired.
