Harvey normans is the B430, i think 2 HDMI ports only and not as stylish

  • I can't believe how cheap these flat panel TVs are nowadays! I spent over 1700$ for my Panasonic 42inch plasma 2 years ago same specifications.

  • +2

pretty low resolution for a 42"

    • +2

Dude its $698! what do you expect?

      • +1

        We want FULL HD!!

        • +1

I want it to ,, Edited - please remember that this is a general site please keep the comments cleaner. Also just stick to the subject - thank you.

    • 1024 x 768 pixels is the resolution of 42" HD plasma TV panels.

I don't know why,, but it is.

      • There are 1366 x 768 models around. Not sure who's idea it was to introduce rectangular pixels (referring to 1024 models).

        • OK,, I've never seen or read of one so I'd love to see an example thanks Livert.

And yes,, I've been intrigued by the 4:3 pixel ratio on these 16:9 42" plasma tele's also.

I'm sure there'll be some bright spark out there in OB land who can illuminate (ouch) the issue for us…

@TeaEarlGreyHot: You're right. Did a search and found a couple but on further investigation, they really were 1024 x 768. Maybe I was thinking of LCDs instead.

            • @Livert: Yes, I don't know the why, but it seems to be a peculiarity with 42" plasma TVs only

@TeaEarlGreyHot: Yeah, theres only a few actual manufacturers of the plasma panels, which each brand use in their TVs. For some reason, the only panels available in the 42" size are 1024x768. You have to go for a 50" if you want 1366x768, or go FullHD ;)

Yes there is the Harvey Norman one for $50 less. As mentioned by kwanq, it's only got 2 HDMI. The B450 also has "FilterBright" and PC input, which the B430 doesn't have. So i think this deal is worth the extra $50. Not sure about the style differences that kwanq mentioned, they look the same on the web images, but i'll take his word for it.

    "FilterBright™ antiglare technology
Minimised image glare and maximised contrast make this HDTV perfect for the ultimate viewing experience day or night. The anti-glare filter reduces reflections noticeably while maintaining ultra-high picture contrast. Daytime sports look crisp and bright, while movies at night feature rich blacks and realistic shadow detail."

Good price, though need a full hd tv these days.

  • +1

nah 720p is fine for me :P need to ring my local gg see if they have any for this price.

    • +1

nah 720p is fine for me :P

      For me three;

      1) 720P(rogressive Scan = non-interlaced) is the highest DVB-T HD-TV resolution broadcast in Oz.

      2) For my eyes at least, I can only just/maybe/begin-to/possibly see a difference between 720P and 1080P on a 50" screen at a "normal" lounge-room viewing distance of 3 metres, in ideal circumstances, with just the right light, no distractions and just the right source material,, so 720P on 42" would be just fine and dandy for me. (Of course, YMMV)

      • I also hate the fact that they try to sell these as 720P capable when they are clearly not. The horizontal pixel count would need to be at least 1280 before you can make that claim.

  • older plasmas have traditionally had rectangular pixels

this makes them useless for pc work

    • Anyone know if this is one such Plasma…. with rectangular pixels?

Note that the other Samsung 42" Plasma from Harvey Norman does not have PC input, whereas this model for $50 more does. Maybe this is a sign that the B450 does have square pixels, and the B430 is older and has the rectangle pixels.

      • Anyone know if this is one such Plasma…. with rectangular pixels?

Hi JoshDude,, the maths says that a 4:3 pixel ratio on a 16:9 size ratio plasma display CANNOT be done with square pixels (without considerable horizontal gaps between pixels)…

Physics doesn't lie (unless you're approaching the speed of light, when all he rules go out the window,, not that you'd have an opening window in a craft capable of near-light speed, or at least I wouldn't,,, and anyway, you'd necessarily be watching reruns which doubtfully would be in HD,, or would that be previews, in which case even 1080P would probably be redundant???).
        B100dy quantum physics gives me a head-ache!!!

You should leave that to Geordi La Forge.

        • But where have you read that it's a 4:3 pixel ratio?

Good work to those who got the B450 for $650 from HN. :)

          • @Josh81:

But where have you read that it’s a 4:3 pixel ratio?

            1024 / 768 = 4 / 3 = 1.333

just got one. Paid 644 at browns plains

  • +1

I got mine for 648 from Harvey Normans, they gave me the B450 instead of 430. Awesome TV, quality comparable to my 46" Bravia W5500

    • +1

Well done, but how? That is $798 on the latest HN catalog, even couldn't found one in Wiley Park HN.(and the GG ends today-Ester Monday)

      • Yeah i saw it for $798 in the latest "Price crushing" catalogue, LOL.

        • Oh! found it, HN did a one day Ester Sat specail on that B430 for $648! Why I need to work on that day!!!

  • Carefully considered. Just worry about there are some feedbacks about capacitors burn out and some hassy sound.I have a Samsung CRT for 10 years, no problem at all. Just worry about the quality of those Plasma.

Is LG better now? It is about $100 more, with 3 years warranty.
