  • Not on the AU Logitech website, so i guess this is a run out model
This must be replacing it and not yet available
Harmony Companion Whole-home control AUD 249.95

    Good little remote
Yes, the buttons are not backlit and you have no graphical display to do help (as compared to Logitechs other controllers)
    BUT
you do have the apps for your phones for troubleshooting
    and
I reckon I have had to troubleshoot a handful of times in two years
    PLUS
its uber annoying when I change settings away from the room for the kids (app works over home wifi)

    • What is the battery life like in reality?

      • +4

2 years on, still on the original set

      • I've only had to replace it once which was maybe a few months ago, and I've had it for about 3 years.

        Definitely recommend this remote!

    • +1

I wish it had more activity buttons.

      • You can long press the activity buttons to double stack them. It's the same for a lot of the other buttons as well.

        • I find the short press/long press annoying and difficult for kids to use, but even six activities aren't enough.

I've gone with three most used activities and we grab a tablet/phone/remote if we want to change it to something else.

I once tried to call my wife at home, but she'd fallen asleep with her phone on silent. I opened the Logitech harmony app, turned on the TV and cranked up the volume. She was annoyed, but at least I got her attention.

      • Wouldn't you have needed to be on your homes wifi to control it via the app? Or can you access it from anywhere?

        • +2

          Can access from anywhere

    • Not backlit? :( Deal-breaker… even my TV remote has that. And with HDMI-CEC I generally don't need to use much else anyway.

  • I've got the Ultimate RF version, but this is a great price for an RF remote.

  • -1

it's slow. if i could find something better i'd replace it. at $80, it's worth buying until something better comes along.

  • Anyone know if this is IFTTT compatible?

I'm only getting confused the more I read.

    • +1

It's compatible with Harmony hub-based products
      https://support.myharmony.com/en-au/harmony-experience-with-…

But seriously, why would you do this? Turn on your TV by sending an SMS??

      • +1

When the babysitter rings you to tell you she can't work out how to turn the TV on using your confusing all-in-one remote maybe?

        • I've been using Harmonys before Logitech bought them so already used to that lol

      • Seems they finally added IFTTT support for this model mid last year.

      • +2

I just like trying to find useful applications for around automation. Lights turn on when I get home, garage texts me if I've left it open at night etc etc. All totally useless stuff but fun to tinker with.

  • Does this allow you to change Foxtel channels from a different room via your smartphone?

    • +1

Yes, the remote itself is RF and you can also use the phone/tablet app over wifi

  • so basically the good about this item is, you can use existing wifi network at home to control tv via mobile phone without need to be infront of the tv itself (and no need to point our mobile to the tv)

    • +3

Your phone controls your equipment through wifi. The remote controls your equipment through Bluetooth. In both cases no need to point at your equipment. The main reason to get any Harmony remote though is automation, not replacing your remotes.

Thanks Trent. Been waiting for this to drop in price.

  • Thanks Trent

Best remote ever. And I've had all the Logitech Harmony's. My uber expensive One gathers dust after acquiring this universal control.

  • Finally used my gift cards. Thanks!

Found one at DSE for 38.99 @70% off. Got the last one at Gunghin, ACT. Not sure if the deal is available at other stores. There's also a returned product'logitech harmony ultimate'for $90

    • It was available at Booragoon WA at that price. I got the last one

    • Thanks mrprash. Got 2 late yesterday arvo from Baldivis WA for $77.98. There was 1 left if anyone is interested

  • Does this work properly if it the hub is housed inside a closed cupboard with the media equipment? From the cnet review it sounds like the hub needs to be visible, and sit on top of the cabinet, as it blasts the IR commands against the room walls. We use a media centre with our 650 - and we use the backlit "Back" and "LiveTV" buttons a lot - but I'm guessing those could be reprogrammed against the numeric or colour buttons. Anyone using it with similar requirements? Seriously weird there is no backlighting though.

    • Yes it should work. I found the IR blaster on the Harmony Smart Control hub can control my amp even though theres no line of sight. If that doesnt work the Harmony Smart Control includes an additional IR blaster so u can route the IR blaster wire directly in front of the equipment your trying to control. Theres room for 2 IR blasters on the Harmony smart control but only 1 is included.
Yeh it does suck how theres no backlighting or LCD on the remote. But its a way to save batt. Otherwise you can always get the Harmony Ultimate. I read a review saying the Ultimate isnt worth the prenium over the smart control. Its got the backlit LCD but the batt doesnt last as long + batt is not replaceable. The review also said that even though there is a touchscreen LCD. Navigating the menu in order to access your fav channel takes a few swipes in order to reach the command.
Also you dont need the backlit screen bc you can always use your smartphone to control the Harmony smart control. Your smartphone already has a backlit screen :)
And yes u can reprogram any of the buttons in activities to whatever u wish. There is also short press and long press button feature allowing you 2x the options on a particular button on the remote.
When i first got my Harmony touch when i started activity it turned on my TV , amp and also aircon by default. Was annoying at first but now I removed the aircon power on/off from the activity.
The app allows plenty of room for customisation. Im still playing around with mine from time to time. It takes abit of time to setup

      • Thanks for that reply. One of the reviewers on Amazon said they have the hub in the cupboard and the blaster on the tv. Sounds like a good option. One of the benefits seems to be that it is more error free than the IR remotes as users don't need to keep pointing it at the equipment until its all started / shut down properly. That would be a big benefit to me - although one of the posters here says it is slow ? I think I'll order one - $5 delivery as none available near me in Sydney metro - and just return, unopened if I decide it isn't the right solution.

        • I also have the hub in a cupboard in the study that is behind the wall that the TV is mounted on. I have the IR blaster that came with it running through the wall and stuck on the tv. The hub is sitting on a shelf with receiver, fetch tv, bluray, xbox, and apple tv scattered on shelves next to, above, and below it. The thing is scary powerful.

Oh, I also like the fact you can configure the IR commands to only go out the hub or the blaster……

As for speed - nah. Is fine. Maybe a little slower but not significantly slower than the older Harmony it replaced with the huge advantage that it rarely goes out of synch now - the kids etc always seemed to walk in front of the old remote at exactly the wrong time. [Have had it for a few weeks now - it does go out of synch every now and then, but that is I suspect the TV missing the command for some reason - just need to trouble shoot it. Unfortunately my tv doesn't have separate commands for hdmi1/2/3 etc which is a pain and I think that's what's causing the occasional issues.]

        • @PlasticSpaceman: Thanks for that. Useful to know. I bought one. Sounds like it will be easier for others to use than current 650 IR remote. Surely your TVs remote must allow you to switch inputs ? If so, you should hopefully be able to teach those commands to the remote (?). BTW - In response to AzNDuDe re the backlight and using the app. The cNet review said it was clunky to use the app - and I reckon I'll come to the same conclusion and prefer to use the remote. Hopefully there'll usually be enough light to see the remote - or few enough buttons to learn them by feel - otherwise I reckon I'll use my phone - as a torch :-)

        • @belbo:

Yeah. My dumb TV needs bring up the source screen and scroll to the selected hdmi port. Sadly there is no 'hdmi4' button, for example. Slow and tedious…. The remote does it, but sometimes I think it sends the commands too quickly for the TV - hence need to tweak it.

Oh and indeed the app is not good for actual normal use. Getting used to the small remote.

        • @PlasticSpaceman:
I remember when I had to get up to change channels.

  • Hmmm. Just thought about the fact that I currently use a microsoft IR receiver, which has a usb out to my media computer (Mythbuntu - MythTV and XBMC). I suppose I'll just need to ensure the Logitech unit can transmit or blast to the MS receiver - which will now be inside the cabinetry - or see if I can do away with the MS receiver and usb connection altogether - and instead use the Logitech to send keyboard commands to the media computer over the network instead. Anyone doing something similar with this?

    • I'm guessing that although it accepts commands via the wifi network it can't issue them to other devices on the network - or can it? That would be pretty interesting. Otherwise there are options- ie keep my current MS IR receiver connected to the pc via usb and let the controller send IR commands to that - or maybe I'll put a bluetooth dongle in the pc and send bluetooth keyboard commands to the pc via the controller. I see some playing around in my near future.

  • In you can find one of these at dick smith they are down to $50. Dont bother with chats wood I bought the last one their on Thursday but you may be lucky in another store.

  • Not a big fan of using mobile for controlling devices in media room. Have to Unlock the phone to operate.Would have been better if the remote was backlit.

    • But a cheap phone and use that for your media room only.

      • So spending another 90-120 dollars for a basic phone raise the price of remote. So why dont you buy upper model for 160-179 range in stores. Forgot the model.

        • Its the ultimate but I need to charge it every couple of days.
We missed out on the woolies mobile deal a couple of weeks ago

        • @mmd: Same for mobile mate. if it is a spare one, it will require recharging every other day.

        • @Gaggy:
Darn, I was hoping to get 3 to 4 days out of the smart phone.
In that case, I'll just turn it on when I really need to use the phone haha (most of the functions I don't require the phone anyways)

        • @mmd: True. But will it be practical? Depend on how you want to use a remote.
Pick up the phone, switch it on. Wait for 30 seconds or more when it is usable, start the app….
When in a movie, pick the phone, press power button to power it, then do what you want to do. If you were in a scene and wanted to pause it, you have lost few seconds.
I want my remote to be instant and backlit :)

If you are happy with these issues, go for it. Anyway, you can buy this and get their own ultimate remote which is compatible with hub I suppose. It is a great price as I already said.

Just posted this: Logitech Harmony Smart Control $38.99 @ Dick Smiths 70% off of $129.98
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239650

Negative vote placed in accordance with voting guidelines "The deal is not the cheapest available".

    • +4

Incorrect…This deal was the cheapest at time of posting ..Invalid neg.

    • +2

At the time of posting, this was probably the cheapest as you can be pretty sure the OP would of checked.

    • +1

You do realise 80% of all DSE Stores Prob wont have them right!

    • So you come to Trent's post to neg his deal and plug your post? Nice going. This was the cheapest when posted, and you'd be lucky to find stock in most DSE stores.

      • +11

Sorry guys, I've revoked the neg. I didn't know it was "at time of posting".
I thought it was so people would check comments to see why it was neg then they would see its cheapest elsewhere, hopefully having them check dicksmiths before going to pick up the jb hifi deal (overall saving them money)

        • Too late mate. You wont be getting any cashback now ;)

      • +1

Plus there were already 2 posts in this thread about it being $38 / $50 at DSE, but low on stock.

      • This is not the cheapest when posted. KentT mentioned it earlier as $78 available in DSE WA. But I agree with @TREND86, it's not widely available. Puts this into consideration, I upvote this deal despite I knew DSE might still have it at $78 somewhere at the time of posting.

    • Guys, I am not sure why you guys take it personal. He is not negging Trent. But I think even an item has got lower price after posting the deal, other members will get know that it is cheaper elsewhere. Otherwise the comment will be lost.
We all love Trent's posts and his contribution.

      • -3

Do you see other members going back and negging old deals because they are now cheaper?

        • +1

It is not an old deal. It is on the front page and from yesterday. Once it is off the front page, there is no point doing that.

        • And the new deal with the cheaper price will probably soon be on the front page also.

        • @Gaggy: exactly why I did the neg, to let people check the comments to see it is cheaper elsewhere. Trents was only posted yesterday still being quite current

        • +1

@camshandez: No Big deal mate. Neg is only to tell the same thing and I have seen it in the past. Not sure why people are getting mad at it. Without neg, it is the comment is going to go unnoticed.

        • @28Degrees: Might only be due to the neg. Also does not change the fact you said earlier that it is an OLD post.

  • Couldn't get stock at any DSE near me so I went with JB. Thanks TRENT!

  • Still waiting for JB to send through the pickup ready email.
I called and their excuse was that nobody was in to do it on Sat. Said would be done yesterday but still nothing.
Sent an email today and here's the reply.

I'm afraid we only have limited stock of this product available across our stores.

We expect that your order will be dispatched within 5-15 days, however please note this is subject to stock being available in your area.

We will let you know if we cannot source the product for any reason.

    • They're probably trying to source one from DSE

  • Up to $99.99 now so should be marked as expired. Got mine and set it up. Thanks. Very happy - although I need to work out why it isn't changing my TV inputs - which the 650's do fine - I'm sure I'll sort it out. Thanks.
