Logitech Harmony Smart Control $38.99 (70% off - $129.98) @ Dick Smith

2260

Great Price, unsure what the go is with Dick Smith deals on Oz B at the moment as haven't seen many others posting their deals (as their prices keep going cheaper and cheaper).
But this post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239505 made it front page with same product $79.96 @ JB Hi-Fi. This is over half that price so a absolute steal!

The Hub itself can now be used to control smart home products like Philips ™ and LIFX lights, August™ smart locks, Nest® and Honeywell®, thermostats, and more. read here (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/harmony-hub)

Picture shows there are over 10 in stock at Bendigo alone, sure other dick smiths will have more around. Note the red dot, as any products with a red dot is 70% off atm (the bottom price sticker in the image has the dot, and receipt as proof).

I was about to post this! Just picked one up in Erina. There were at least 10 left in the cabinet

    • Thanks, i'll grab one tomorrow!

    • Thumbs up to you for leaving some for the rest of the community!

  • +1

    About their 70% off…

I bought something from them pre Christmas for $5.
Went into DS yesterday. Item is now marked at $35!

Oh yes, it's a red dot so 70% off. Bargain :)

  • +39

This is the best bargain ive seen in along time

New user who took the time to take a picture, write a detailed description, and actually post as a deal.

No referral credits, affiliations or desire to win a monthly prize of any sort.

    Only motivation is altruism

Well done - if it were up to me id give you a monthly prize for keeping it real.

      • Yeah, that's pretty shameless.

Edit: OP clarified and posted comment on the other thread. Move on.

      • +21

I dont think anything wrong with what he did to be honest. You guys are taking it personal as an attack to Trent's deal. Due to that neg, I came to know about this price. I wont buy it as I dont like the remote without the backlit, but it is a great price.

      • +1

NKOB - let them know then move along.

        • +2

          NKOTB. Woot! 👬👬👬

      • +4

        Oh dear.

Being a new user im sure they will see their error, apologise and make amendments

        We've all made mistakes before

either way, i still think this particular deal is a great example of grass roots bargain hunting and sharing

        • -6

It's an incredible deal, don't get me wrong. Just think the OP went about it the wrong way. I'll plus the deal, even though I paid $80 for it yesterday lol :)

        • +42

Yeah I apologised on trents post… I saw it as a method to let people go to the comments to lead them to the cheaper price. Otherwise they'll see only up votes and head to jb hifi without checking dick smith first :)

        • +17

@camshandez: another refreshing trait - instead of the usual keyboard war over any little disagreement on the internet, this guy actually apologised immediately- amd thats after offering a plausible excuse

          Well done champ!

        • +3

@camshandez: I still think you didn't do anything wrong and should not apologize. New post for the better price, update the one from last day with a neg so that users know and move on.
Trent has given us amazing deals and I have saved lot of money from his deals alone and never forget to check his detailed posts
But because it is Trent's deal, does not mean it can't be negged. It is for the deal not person….

        • +4

          @camshandez:
Ignore the comments saying you did wrong. You were right to point them to a cheaper price.
Some people are super protective about fake internet points (me for example ;-)

        • No no no , OzBargain veterans are perfect and have never made a mistake.

        • +3

@pointless comment: Wish OzB had more posts like this. In fact, wish OzB had MOST posts like these.

        • +2

@clarky: agreed, it fills me with hope and optimism for the future of this site, when so many newcomers are content throwing up udemy courses, free phone apps and amazon books - not to mention referral spam - and then bang on about how hard it is to post a bargain and that they work so tirelessly for the good of the community - all delivered with an overt sense of superiority and entitlement.

        • +2

@pointless comment: And fast food hacks! haha

        • +2

@clarky: Following on from the comments reagarding referrals, I have noticed that some voters appear to be upvoting every single post by other posters. Now i have nothing against that in itself, but it does raise issues with the voting system criteria to reach the front page.

I believe on average it takes 15 votes to reach the front page, many of the widely known posters have any where from 2-10+ people who vote unconditionally and I thats without ascertaining if its even a bargain. What this shows me is that the voting system is flawed and is exploited a fair bit.

        • +2

@GameChanger: Only takes 5 votes for the posters referral link to show up too.

The voting system is only flawed towards "popular users" unlike regular users like myself and you who actually have to earn our votes to front page. IMO at least we feel like we have earnt it when we front page occasionally :)

        • @ShamelessBargains: you make good points SB - apparently there is an upcoming forum thread where opinions on such as this can be aired, as stated by Neil - heres the link, youll have to open the collapsed thread from Clarky to see it

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239480#comment-3552126

        • @pointless comment:

I agree with your point that this is an exceptional deal and captures the spirit of OzBargain like few others.

However, there's nothing wrong with free Udemy courses and ebooks. If you're not interested in those you don't have to click on these deals. Doesn't mean that they don't represent value to many people. The fact that they usually get a lot of upvotes speaks for itself.

        • @elektron: hi Elektron, I have nothing against free knowledge or reading…was just using the examples to make a point… Anyone can find these themselves, while a deal such as this one from camshandez woud not be known to the wider community unless someone took the time to photograph and provide details, instead of just cutting and pasting a link

And then theres issues with the voting system iteself, as outlined by shameless Bargains and Gamechanger above…worth considering who is actually initially voting on such deals to assist getting the first 15-20 votes that sees them actually land on ozbargains front page…then once highly visible, you get a snowball effect and a somewhat average deal will look better to all after you are getting into the 30+ mark

The way things are presently, i honestly think that an inanimate lump of coal could reach a triple figure vote tally as long as it had free delivery and was posted as a deal under certain conditions

          food for thought…

          Cheers!

        • @pointless comment:

True, people can probably find some of these themselves but many (most?) either don't have the time, wouldn't bother, or simply don't know how.

Personally, I value the effort that goes into some of the ebooks and courses posts. I'd say this takes more effort than snaping and uploading a picture. And if someone finds 1 book or course that they can benefit from, the deal definitely deserves an upvote.

Your 'conspiracy theory' sounds interesting and plausible. I just don't understand why someone would invest so much effort and spend so much of their personal time just to get virtual ratings and badges? Perhaps I'm not as cynical as you but I've always thought that the main reason people took their time to post these is the community spirit.

        • @elektron: haha… Never though of it as a conspiracy theory….quite a few users are not happy with the current state of things based on the facts that present themselves - in a lot of ways, ozbargain is quite transparent with access to users vote /post history/referrer tags etc

Unfortuneately, not everyone is motivated by community spritt and altruism. The referral system affords a situation where for example, users can vote for each other in order to boost vote numbers to hit the front page and gain more exposure to casual users of the site and non members (who account for circa 80% of ozbargain traffic)

When you add referrals and affiliations into the mix it creates motivation for personal income, rather than 'community spirit' as you put it - people arent just doing it for the virtual ratings and badges!

        • @pointless comment:

Now that you've explained it, it does make sense, although it still sounds like an aweful lot of effort to 'game the system' for what is probably relatively little gain.

By the way, I didn't neg your previous post.

        • -1

@elektron: haha thanks buddy all good - ive got no shortage of neggers, dont worry about that. Glad i was clear…if a new user clicks through on a referral link the going amount on most companies is a $10 credit.

Once a deal hits the front page of ozbargain, it can get tens of thousands of hits, the overwhleming majority being non-members who likely dont really know one poster from the other - in fact, many people think ozbargain is a shopfront amd send queries directly to the site asking when their product will be delivered!

As an example, lets say a post gets 10,000 views, and 1% of thise views sign up a new account through the referral link. That equates to 100 sign ups pr $1000 in potential store credit at $10 per sign up.

Now lets say that of the theoretical 100 signups, 25% use the referrers direct link and 75% use the random link.

That means that the referrer who posted the deal will recieve $250 in store credit.

If you can jag those numbers a few times per month, it really adds up over time!

Now you can see that 'community spirit' is not always the driving factor in posting deals - the effort in 'gaming the system' as you put it can be worth it, even if you slash the numbers in my example by half at any given stage int the equation

        • @pointless comment: I happened across one of your comments and having read the thread in full, I'm simply amazed at the lengths you've gone to link your crap across multiple deals in what appears nothing more than a self serving exercise and personal vendetta against multiple users. I'm also interested in knowing if you're somehow affiliated with the OP of this deal as you've taken extreme measures to congratulate him a number of times. What exactly are you trying to achieve here? Also you second guessing moderators shows extreme disrespect and arrogance for authority. A fabulous trait for keyboard warriors. Yes, I did vote negative to your comments. If only I had more votes.

        • -1

@themob: you are entitled to your opinions - but you are making some fairly wild accusations there.

No idea who OP is - just saw his post and found if refreshing, as stated - and agreed with by 40-odd members

Not really trying to achieve anything , just sharing my opinion as you are yours, amd no, i am not a keyboard warrior as you say.

And for the record i do respect the work mods put in - doenst mean you cant disagree with them - especially on a site like ozbargain, where voting and democratic ideals underpin its fundamental workings

Lastly, sincere thanks for claiming the neg votes. Too many simply neg away in the shadows - i respect you for that. I think they reload every 24 hours, so if you can't fond another 5 people to neg, and youre the type who feels the need, feel free to dump them on some of my comments - be sure to claim them though as you did today!

cheers, no hard feelings… Have a great day - i hope one day we can be on the same side on a different topic!

        • +3

@pointless comment: I just don't get why you can't make your point in one, maybe two comments and move on. No need for the repetitions.

        • @themob: haha yeh well i guess i can be a bit wordy…i guess i feel obliged to reply to people…i just type whatever comes to mind, sometimes its stuff i said before i spose. Point taken - ill try to cut down the word count!

Cheers buddy, as i said no hard feelings… Have an upvote!

      • +3

        C-C-C-Combo Breaker!

      • +6

One of the rare times a negative vote gets used as it should be…… (ie to draw member's attention to a cheaper deal), and everyone loses their shit….. and the neg is retracted with an apology!!!

This website certainly seems to have lost it's way somewhere…..

    • I dont understand why this has been collapsed for being 'off-topic'

The comment references the text in OPs topic, the picture in OPs topic, OPs motivation to post the topic and my opinion and endorsement of the validity of the topic as a bargain, which again seems quite topical to me

In fact, To get any more on-topic, id simply be cutting and pasting the original post!

At the time of writing this comment, my post also has collected 13 upvotes, which indicates to me by extrapolation that many, many other readers find it topical too!

The total of upvotes in the entire thread is well over 60! Again, this indicares that many users find the topic, well, topical!

In the interest of transparency and the democratic ideology of ozbargain, Can the mod who collapsed this please explain to me and the many upvoters as to why this is deemed as off-topic ?

      • 'off-topic' is often code for 'inconvenient'. ;)

        • +1

Its posisible i guess…perhaps it was just a mistake.

As you can see ive asked the mod responsible to clarify - im sure they will get back to me in the interests of democracy and transparency

18 people have now upvoted the comment so by extrapolation, its reasonable to estimate 100 or more people would like to know, given that members make up about 20% of ozbargains traffic

        • +2

'off-topic' is often code for 'inconvenient'. ;)

Stewballs, i fear you may be correct.

It has been several hours and none of the mod team has come forth and offered a reason as to why my topical comment on the OPs topic - for which i have been awarded the 'Popular Comment' badge by the community of voters - has been conversely collapsed for being "off-topic"

Perhaps they are too busy and will address this tonight or tomorrow, i guess we will see.

        • +1

          @pointless comment:

Stewballs, i fear you may be correct.

Those very same words have struck fear into the hearts of gods & mortals alike since time immemorial! ;)

      • Unless it's been fixed since your comment, the whole discussion is still showing ;)

        • Yes its showing, but its collapsed and marked as off-topic.

And the upvote count, which can be read as a mark of a topics validity and, for want of a better word, topicality is now up to 18.

I wonder if it hits 30, i will be the first member awarded the popular comment badge for a comment deemed off-topic?

Probably would have hit the magic 30 mark already if it was not buried!

spackbace - you are a power user right? Can you please ask the mod responsible when they will address my queries regarding my comment topics topicality?

        • @pointless comment:

          TWAM and ask your questions

        • @Spackbace: as i said above 18 people have now upvoted the comment so by extrapolation, its reasonable to estimate 100 or more people would like to know, given that members make up about 20% of ozbargains traffic

Thanks for your suggestion but with the vast number of users of the site now so heavily invested in the topics topicality, Its more a matter of public interest now so would prefer the mod respnsible to address this in a more transparent and democratic open forum

      • -3

If you are going to neg any of my comments - or those of others for that matter - please have the courage to identify yourself and list a reason why.

I find it particularly spineless to neg people when they are trying to be serious - its like punching someone in the dark and running off before they knew what hit them.

What kind of person does that huh?

    • Wow… Ive just recieved the 'Popular Comment' award for this thread…somewhat of a surprise given that it has been collapsed for being "off-topic" so far without any explanation

Its a huge honour and i thank all you who have voted - firstly for this grass roots bargain posted by camshandez and secondly for my comment

In case you are not aware, it has been revealed there will be an upcoming forum thread on referrals inititated by mods, where hopefully you can voice your opinions as evidenced In the link below (you will have to expand the collapsed thread from Clarky to see it)

I would pull the trigger if it had more activity buttons. My non tech-savvy family already find the Harmony 650 impossible to use (because they forget it's still a regular IR remote, and needs to be pointed at the devices, it doesn't work off pixie dust) even though I've made it idiot-proof. This'd be a disaster.

    • Almost certain the hub acts as a IR blaster, and if it doesn't it comes with an IR extender and capability to add another.

So I just have the hub showing, and then all the gear in a cabinet behind it to keep it neat and ran the IR extender to the cabinet.

        • Yea the hub and remote are RF, however, the hub also acts as an IR blaster I am fairly certain with IR extenders that can be routed to areas where the remote wouldn't typically be able to access (i.e. in cabinetry)

        • @sletts: ah, makes sense

    • How many actions do you need? This supports six as each of those three action buttons can be mapped to a short or long press.

The remote unlike the 650 uses FF so doesn't have to be aimed at anything either.

      • I need at least 5, and the main thing is they need to be labelled, otherwise my family would never be able to use it. The smartphone app would confuse them even more.

        • +1

Standard solution: print out and stick a description of what each button does on the back of the remote.

        • +3

          @syousef:

Not sure why you got negged.

People who are too stupid to use a remote will just have to get up off their a*** and control the device digitally (ie: with a finger on the device controls)

        • +1

          @llama:

I got negged because Ozbargain is full of trolls. Happens regularly. I think I have one following me around (searching for my posts) but there's no way to know for sure.

@syousef: Fixed those neggs for you :P

        • @deanylev:

Thanks for the effort. Don't let it trouble you. Whenever I've seen a site with anonymous voting it has been abused. As you've just proven there are good people too.

  • +2

Looks like a good deal, and I saw people jumping all over these during the "original" fire sale late last year, but what are these actually used for?
Is it just to simplify and go to a single remote?

    • seriously looking for the same answer: what is it used for?
Need to get my head clear before purchasing, I couldn't help myself when seeing bargains

      • +2

This solution was perfect for me. I have a projector screen that covers all the audio/media playing gear. This remote is not IR so does not need line of sight. I can control all the items hiding behind the screen. Had one for a while now, it's awesome. Apparently it can work behind closed cabinet doors too as long as there is a gap between shelves for the hub to bounce the IR to different levels. It comes with an additional IR blaster just in case.

        • You know what is happening next, tickets to Brass class will be going up. Typical cinema operators.

        • @Hank Scorpion: That's right Hank, I might have to upgrade it to Bronze class to weed out the low life's that attend, no ribs for you! :-)

    • +20

I'd say there's three main benefits

      a) If you have Bluetooth devices (Playstation for example), this will work with those where your $20 universal remote probably won't.

      b) You can combine all your remotes into a single one more likely than not.

      c) This supports what Logitech calls 'Activities'. If you have a setup that consists of more than just a TV, then very likely you need multiple devices to be on and inputs set to do anything. For example, to play my Xbox I'd need to turn the console on, my AV Receiver on and my TV on. I'd also need to set the TV to HDMI1 and my Receiver to whatever the Xbox is plugged into.

Rather than having to do that all manually using 3 remotes (of which the AV receivers is a living nightmare to use), the Logitech remote will group all those devices into one 'Activity', so that when I hit the Xbox button it turns them all on and switches the inputs of the TV and receiver to the correct combination. Right now my TV has five or six consoles connected to it plus an Apple TV, so for me it makes life a lot easier.

The activities aren't completely dumb either. If you do a power off it'll turn everything off…but if I swap from my Xbox One to my Apple TV it knows only the Xbox needs to be shut down and the AV Receivers input swapped. It won't turn off things that are needed for the next activity.

They're also pretty simple to set up…and this particular unit if you want can be used with a mobile phone instead of the included remote although I prefer the included one, even over Logitechs more expensive touch screen remotes actually.

I haven't mentioned it yet, but Logitechs also adding some home automation stuff which may interest some people, such as the ability to include lights and the like as part of an activity which might be handy for some people.

      • -1

Gotta say this sounds pretty useless to me lol

        • +1

Each to their own. There's no way my partner would be able to use the remote that ships with the AV Receiver so this has been a godsend and is one of my best purchases.

        • +9

Here's a simple explanation (example watch a blu-ray) - tell me that this is useless:

Press a single button - your TV turns on, your Receiver turns on, your Blu-ray turns on, all of them switch to the correct inputs.

The remote's volume buttons control the receiver's volume, the chapter buttons etc will control the blu-ray player.

Finished watching - press one button and all the devices turn off.
