Cheapest bang for buck tablet you can get at the moment, great specs, nice form factor, android 6.

Just thought I'd share it with you here as I've found so much great stuff too!

Thanks for everything :D

Just purchased one of these myself after doing some research.

Are you a scientist too ?

    • Why so sarcastic? I was just trying to be helpful by sharing this its a good price in 'aud' for a tablet with these kinds of specs far better than anything you could find in a store here.

      • +2

His comments are always like this, take it as a joke (not a funny one, but still).

        • What makes you think I'm not doing research?

        • +1

          @jv: Your comments.

        • @jv: Ozbargaining doesn't count.

    • jv's you've done it again.

  • +1

It's pretty much at RRP. Where's the bargain? or are you comparing buying a Mazda with a MG?

    List Price: $199.99
Price: $199.00 + $8.43 Shipping & Import Fees Deposit to Australia Details
    You Save: $0.99

    • The bargain is just that its a good spec tablet for a decent price. After looking at ipads for $600 aud, Chinese things on ebay for $260, and comparable name brands at stores like big w, jb hifi etc this is the best bang for buck you can get at the moment.

      :)

      • +2

        Oh right. Compared to iPads.
        Fair enough.

        • +2

Its a good price full stop. For $300 you get a BRAND NAME FHD tablet with class leading GPU and the specs cant be beat even for tablets costing $100 more. And it has actual support.

Sure its an old tablet, middle 2014 but it shows how little progress has moved. My Nexus 7 2013 is still leading for many specs.

        • @tonyjzx:

Exactly why I wanted to share it with everyone! :P its not 'on sale' or 'reduced' but its still a damn good deal! heh

        • @tonyjzx: Be fair, tablet market is fairly small and Android tablet market is even smaller. Even iPads are declining in its sales figure (and that's saying something) and they are having easier time compared to Android manufacturers.

        • @tonyjzx:

yep, i'm using a Nexus 7 (2013) too…for me, nothing that has come out since can top it (i prefer 7" over 7.9"/8", which seems to be the standard that manufacturers have adopted).

        • @rm2kdev:

I temper than with "$100 more" as I'm looking at a Samsung Tablet S 8" but they want $480 for it and its better than this… just not $200 better. And Samsung support blows for a Tier 1 company.

I've been wanting a mid range 7 to 8-inch (LOL havent we all!) to replace/supplement my Nexus 7 and its been pretty much nothing out there.

        • @tonyjzx: Actually the nvidia shield K1 is new.

Date First Available November 17, 2015

        • @Letrico:

          apologies, here it is:

          http://www.gsmarena.com/nvidia_shield_k1-7832.php

Android OS, v5.0 (Lollipop), upgradable to v6.0 (Marshmallow)

yeah look at the reviews it gets… this is a well regarded unit

        • @Letrico: K1 is pretty much a budget version of their previous tablet Nvidia Shield. It's almost the same tablet with no stylus pen and slightly different looking design.

        • I know how you guys feel hey I've been using a 2012 nexus 7 since… well 2012 love it! haven't found anything until now that for my purposes as the daily driver fits the budget and spec.

And yeah Oversimplified is right its a cut back version of the last Shield no charger, no headphones, no stylus etc just a tablet.

          @rm2kdev:

apparently nexus 7 2016 coming out in May…fingers crossed the rumours are true!

          http://www.ibtimes.com/google-nexus-7-2016-rumors-release-da…

  • +1

What would this be comparable to e.g. Samsung tablets for the specs

    • +2

Tab S2? Tegra K1 was better though with games (better GPU).

    • +1

Spec wise its pretty decent looks like it keeps up with most modern $500ish+ tablets

      https://browser.primatelabs.com/android-benchmarks

However it has a nice little side benefit that its not just a CPU it has a dedicated nvidia GPU in it too so gaming performance is off the charts in titles that support it as well as general UI responsiveness.

      • +1

Damn so tempting…. Don't really need a tablet.. Haha

  • +1

Hmm this things ticks all the boxes, even has gps

sad that the currency sucks so hard

    200.00 USD = 262.156 AUD
    US Dollar ↔ Australian Dollar

    • I know what you mean! hating the currency right now. Personally though I just picked it up because I figured sub $300 is still damn good for what it is by AU price v performance lol.

    • +2

Exchange rate actually got better from last year (it's recovering).
AUD USD parity probably wouldn't come anytime soon (and it'd be better for the economy too).

  • +1
  • Thanks for posting this, tempted to "upgrade" the nexus 7 but noticed this only has 16gb internal storage. Not all apps/games play nice with external storage right ?

    • I think the marshmallow update fixes that :P

  • Still very, very happy with my Samsung 10.1 2014 edition (best device i have bought in the past decade i reckon) but i must admit have been eyeing off this one…..must continue to resist!

  • Hi does anyone know a 10" version with similar specs?

    • +1

      Pixel C?

Actually, Nexus 9 would be more like this tablet but in 10 inch region. Though with Pixel C promotion that's going on right now, I'd go with Pixel C.

  • I have 2 of these, it was a much better deal when they were originally released. Nvidia been kind to me. They replaced my original tablet with a new one after getting the infamous cracks. Then they sent me a brand new one because there was a battery issue. So now I have 2 for $335 I originally paid. The tablet is well supported and one of the first devices to get updates. OK screen, nice stereo speakers and HDMI to connect to TV. Not too many better value tablets than this on the market.

  • No idea whether this is a good deal or not but just wanted to say that it's a nice looking tablet!

  • Xiaomi Mipad 1 and 2 anyone? The original packed a K1 beleive, and retina too.

    • -1

Depend on what form factor u like. Mi pad got the same squareish form of the iPad mini. Would still go for this. It has hdmi out and front facing speaker. Xiaomi is now known to me as another apple copycat, it started out ok with some minor differentiation here and there. Got better-known then gone back to doing what Chinese companies do best, copy apple.

      • +1

The OPs arguement is based on price - performance. However here we see there's better value to be had on an everyday price, AU$230 delivered (and that's for the Mipad 2). The Mipad 1 has the same Nvidia K1, plus an 8 inch retina display which is still better even at a 4:3 aspect.

        • Though 4:3 means that you get bigger letter box for a lot of movies (16:9, 21:9 etc).

        • +2

          @Oversimplified:
That's true, but retina is better for eye candy and we are talkng a gaming orientated tablet after all, not one for movies. Also 4:3 is better for browsing and documents.

        • @chyawala: True that. :)

        • I note mipad 2 has no SD Card slot.

  • I was looking into buying one of these, but the cheapskate in me settled on a $100 LG Gpad 7.0 from 1-day.com.au - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/236203.

Clearly not an apples for apples comparison (720P screen vs 1080P, and Snapdragon 400 CPU vs K1 CPU etc), but I'm happy with my purchase. But I'd echo the sentiment above - if you want a good, small Android tablet then these are a great option. From my research, make sure you get the K1 edition as this was the revised hardware that nVidia released…

  • The k1 is just a cut cost version of the original.

  • +1

I only very recently purchased a K1, what a disaster of a product! I upgraded to 6.0MM only to find out there is a bug called the MISCELLANEOUS BATTERY drain (look it up on Nvidia's support site or google) The only suggestion from Nvidia was to roll back to 5.1.1 which I did only to get a non recognized SDCARD (worked fine before) and WiFi dropouts so bad I could do virtually nothing with the tablet.

I did all the fixes and spent way too much time trying to fix it, when it actually worked I loved it but man what a headache, buy something else or wait until they fix these very serious problems with what should be an awesome tablet.

-edit- to be fair, Amazon gave me a full refund no questions asked

    • This is what i was most afraid of. I wonder if N9 suffered the same problems having the same gpu.

  • With radically different hardware to most tablets selling today, you can pretty much expect 'issues' with this tablet (of some form or another). No thanks.

A quick look at the Amazon critical reviews tells the story.

    • Knowing Nvidia card drivers, you'd be wary I guess.

    • Nexus 9 did have Tegra K1 though.

      • How did that go

        • Not really sure, but Nexus series are the reference series, devices that Google make for manufacturers and developers. So I don't think you can say "radically different". Half the things I see from Google's update, like their webview, has "Optimisation for Tegra K1 on Nexus 9" or something like that.

Besides, radically different? I think that applies to X86 chips, like Intel chips used on some of the tablets. I do remember hearing about compatiability issues with those far more.

        • @Oversimplified:

In your research travel or findings did you ever come across or find a solid or stable tablet.

I ask because so far every tablet seems to have some issue or another besides the flagship apple samsung and sony tablets. But i could be mistaken.

        • @AlienC: every tablets have problems documented. In fact I can say that for every device. Samsung tab s1 had problems with the back becoming distorted, nexus 7 2013 had touch issues etc etc (I am out right now so I can't make a long post).

The thing is you'd be hard to find a device that performs as much as this at this price. Most Chinese tablets use Intel chips which in my opinion is radically different.

        • Most Chinese tablets use Intel chips which in my opinion is radically different.

All the ones I look at use Mediatek.

        • @Oversimplified: between a nexus 9, nvidia shield tab or xiaomi mi pad 1 or 2 which one would you choose

        • @cheepwun: A lot of older models use Mediatek, I kinda forgot about that since I got so used to those Intel baytrail tablets that were cheap. Anyways, My point was, Intel chips are based on different architecture so I think they are "radically different".

        • @AlienC: Depends, in short, I'd go for something depending on your need (except mi pad 2, I think mi pad 1 is slightly better than that for reasons). Nexus 9 is a 9~10 inch tablet, which I have no interest in currently, so I wouldn't go for that (even if I do, I'd go for something larger than 16GB). Between Mi Pad 1 and nvidia Shield, I kinda am on the fence about it. I'd probably go with nvidia shield?

        • @Oversimplified:

Hmm ok thanks yeah i have been trying to rack my brains over which one i am gonna get.

Depending on prices of course the new x1 nvidua shield tablet would be idwal but maybe i mighr just opt for tne k1 version when it comes down even mors in price… Hopefully $200 aud.

        • @AlienC: I am not sure whether X1 version would come out. The only Nvidia product that I think X1 is used in is the Android TV one. Of course, if you want to get Pixel C (which uses X1), which is by Google, I think it's the top of the Android tablet but I personally think it's bit bulky (which wouldn't bother many people).

K1 in my opinion is alright. A lot of Android tablets are using slightly older versions of SoCs available so K1 is one of the best one you could find on tablets at the moment.

  • No more stock at Amazon, now price increased to USD227.95 by other seller.
