How bad is it? Pulled up too fast in the drive way. Dad reckons it's gonna be $3k to fix it but he is just angry. I'm going to pay for it of course, but I'm only part time cashier. Where do I go to fix it? I was going to go audi centre in Parramatta. Are normal mechanics able to do it? its second hand 2006 diesel if that matters.

just gave Mitch a call. he seems like a great guy and gave me a good quote compared to other prestige places. I'm meeting him tonight. he asked how I found him and I tried telling him "zeppeybabey" from ozbargain sent me. hilarious haha

I do think your Dad should hold some blame for this accident. To own an expensive car such as this Audi without comprehensive insurance & allow his teenage son to drive it, is asking for an accident to happen , which is exactly the case. Just pleased it happened in your driveway , nobody was hurt. Had it been on the open road the scenario could have been a lot worse. I commend you for your remorse of what has happened & your determination to put it right & get back into his good books.
Learn from the incident & don't swing in so fast in the future.

    • A car worth $20k-$30k is hardly expensive

      • I bet it will feel a lot more expensive when it's pinched with absolutely no insurance cover. I actually think Dad is being completely irresponsible for letting OP drive without comprehensive cover. What if this was a write-off, not just a scratch and dent? In short, OP really should get his own bomb car if Dad won't insure the Audi sufficiently.

I think he does have comprehensive insurance but doesn't want to claim it.

    • Your Dad takes some of the blame for not ensuring your driving skills were up to scratch by the time you got your full license.

      What's his accident rate like?

In most busy areas it is safer to reverse into driveways. Then pulling out onto the street on next use of the car is safer for all, with much improved visibility.

You should pay for the damage but get him to pay for some advanced driver training for you. It will be fun and improve your skill and risk calculations.

      • guessing good enough to go 3rd party

  • The second pic - Looks like Kratos sword.

Looks like you have lots of white paint still on it.

Get some truck wash, clay bar and a polishing compound. You'll find that most of the white will disappear and the rest is much less noticable.

PS. If you're handy with paintwork and know how to use isopropyl alcohol, you can remove a lot the white paint before doing the rest of it. Will make the job a lot quicker, but you may wreck the clear coat if you're unsure.

Used these guys for scratch on out car and was about $500 I think. Ask then for quote of one near you

  • is your dad mad?

only suggestion i have is apply plenty of lube to butthole :(

  • Its a 10 year old car, not a brand new car. So let the lessons be learnt here, and maybe just get some touch-up paint and let it be. Its not structural damage, and doesn't really affect anything unless you plan to resell.

  • well it looks like its been fixed before, pic 3 and 4 you can see the body filler from the previous repairs in the same location.

Wow. So many comments telling him off. I'd hate to have a dad like any of you guys. I have had many "scratches" including some decent cars like writing off my dads xr6 which cost the same as this Q7. It's not that big of a deal. My dad was actually only concerned I was OK. Hardly got angry.

Its an Audi people not a Ferrari. Calm down. OP don't worry it's all part of being a kid. Gained a lot of experience dealing with mechanics, getting legal accident sign off waivers (I don't believe in comprehensive either haha)! No regrets!

Your dad sounds like a top bloke :)

Your dad is like mine. I scratched and dented his car 4-5 times while on my L's and P's. Was a late model Holden Berlina worth 30K. He didn't get angry. Pretty much just laughed it off. It's just cosmetic damage, no need to get angry over it, although it is lowering the value of the car if left un-repaired we still shouldn't let such things get us angry with family, there are much more important things in life than paint jobs. Btw, each accident happened under quite specific circumstances, I learned from each mistake, was simply due to inexperience, I haven't had any accidents for years since then.

  • Look up Paintless dent removal. (some of them do paint as well)

Some of the white will polish out, and you should do that this weekend. Just visit Supercheap Auto with their 20% off sale and get something to clean it up first. before any repairer sees it.

  • If you're going to be driving his car a lot, why not offer to pay the gap between 3rd party and comprehensive? It would only be a couple of hundred at most.

    • Nope.
Since OP is trying to land a grad job, he/she probably under 25, my guess 22-24, unless they took a gap year, or they took a really long degree.
The difference between Comprehensive insurance for a car that covers 25yo+ drivers and the cover that also covers under 25 drivers (full license) is $300.

We're talking about 3rd party (is there an age limit?) and Comp (under 25).
Definitely going to be at the very least $300.

Personally i wouldnt fix it unless its mechanical and causing issues with rego. Only fix if its a show room car, otherwise no one cares about your blemish except yourself.

    • +1

      Except it's not his car.

  • its a 4wd, 4wds get scrathches and dings all the time otherwise why buy a big truck like that.

  • Hello OP,
The Q7 may have aluminium body panels and the repair is different to steel panels.

Get your dad to send his car to any of these panel repair shop if it's aluminium panels.
    http://www.audi.com.au/au/brand/en/owners/audi_approved_pane…

You can always pay your dad in installment. He owns a Q7 he should be able to tackle this no problem he's just angry.

  • tell your dad you're not paying because you're saving up for your own car
    that'll shut him up

    • Saving for a scratched Audi Q7?

  • +1

Why do people get so worked up over cosmetic scratches, just leave them on the car as a daily reminder to all involved of the lesson learnt, it's free and productive :)

    • +1

Bad advice. Sometimes these damages when left unattended can start to rust and that will be a lot worse down the track.

I frequently see cars with rusts from gashes/scratches that were left unattended and developed into quite a severe rust patch.

      • I have a beautiful rust patch on the rear of my car - from where my car was "repaired" by a panel beater.

Since you say it may cost $3k then why don't you negotiate with your dad by paying his insurance comprehensive for 2 years (including the extra premium as a result of the crash) and the excess to claim. That way he don't need to pay for 2 years and you can pay in "instalments" over the two years through insurance premiums. Win win for you two. Normally premium prices are increased for the last 2 years of having an accident.

    • The Dad only has 3rd party insurance.

  • 2 panels damaged, metallic paint a premium brand…

3k will be a bargain to repair.

  • mate, look.
come to get a quote from this smash repair shop
    Gartmore Smash Repairs
    Panel Beaters & Painters
11 Gartmore Ave, Bankstown, NSW 2200

. Last time they painted the whole back bumper and i also had the same mark as yours. I got it done under $600 within 3 days. Good as new

  • Not a big job at all,I will charge you $1k for the job, 2 and half days work. If you haven't found the right place to go, pm me.

  • $1.5K is cheaper than living out of home.

  • just leave it, only cosmetic. Hope one day someone else hits you in the same spot… or fix it when sell.

    Hi OP,
Seems you are in Sydney. There are shops in Mt Druitt around Stout road that do a fabulous work. Cost would be significantly less. I have comprehensive insurance, but choose to get it done from there. ( someone backed into my car when it was parked for my kids football/soccer - also scratched the area close to wheels, and did not leave a phone number, and in another unrelated incident, I broke the casing of tail lights).
NRMA said excess for both separately, and the premiums would go up.
I took my car to the shop, and not only did he do an excellent job, the price was significantly lower.
    Cheers,
    Varun

Get a quote from Centreline Smash in Revesby. Ask for Sam the owner. Explain your story to him. He's a great bloke and and his prices are reasonable.

  • Solution : Don't worry it happens, By visual it looks like you scratch your card by hitting white object, Thats why you have that substance on your car, you can remove it with "JELSOL". Its jelly time spray, just spray and wipe with normal cloth, it will remove all external materials that stick to your original paint. Your original paint won't get impacted so no issue.

The only that worry is dent mark on your car body, for that you needs to speak to some professional.

  • when getting quotes tell them its not under insurance and will be cash, should come in cheaper.

hey guys thank you for all your responses and help. I ended up going to Mitch at Sharpline paints Moorebank for $900. i told him that i scratched my dad's car and he was very understanding of the situation. i dropped the car to him tuesday morning and got it back friday midday. he was very polite, compared to others i called who quoted 'a couple of thousand' and some didnt even get back to me. very happy with the service https://imageshack.com/a/PzOM/1. cheers

    • +4

$900 is a bargain, you done well.

    • Well done on bargain hunting for repairs and it's much better than your dad's angry quote of 3k.
Next time remember how much $900 can buy before you pull up quickly in the driveway.

We all make mistakes in life, just consider this a slightly expensive one :)
