How bad is it? Pulled up too fast in the drive way. Dad reckons it's gonna be $3k to fix it but he is just angry. I'm going to pay for it of course, but I'm only part time cashier. Where do I go to fix it? I was going to go audi centre in Parramatta. Are normal mechanics able to do it? its second hand 2006 diesel if that matters.

If he has comprehensive insurance, have it done through that and you pay the excess

    • i think he only has third party. thanks for the tip though.

      • +32

Wow! Well maybe he can come to the party for co payment as part of the risk and savings he made by not comprehensively insuring a $25K-$28K car.

        • +18

          You're kidding, right?

He didn't do the damage. Why should it cost him ANYTHING? You break it, you fix it. End of story.

        • +1

          @Geewhizz:

Well he did allow a relative powerful vehicle to be driven by a statistically high risk driver.

Based on the information above (which we now know to be different) he was allowing the insurance company to carry the risk for damage to other cars and carrying the risk himself for damage to his own car.

You can't give a high risk person a gun and then say it's not my fault when the gun goes off.

        • Er, $25K-$28K car? Try 100k. Or am I missing something?

        • @Rocket6:

its second hand 2006 diesel if that matters.

        • +1

          @muncan:

I stand corrected. That certainly matters.

      • +40

oh dear. I drove a bomb of a car and I have third party. Can't imagine someone who owns a Q7 with only third party :(

      • +1

More to the point - do you have third party property insurance? You should be claiming on your insurance if you can.

        • +10

parents don't want to claim insurance coz their premium will go up or something. i know it kind of defeats the whole point of having insurance in the first place. but they're asian and i don't really have the high ground to argue with them

        • +2

@rockman117: Oh well. That's the wonders of being a father. I am sure my kids will (profanity) me the same way in the future.

        • +3

@rockman117: So youre obviously only new to driving so whys ur Dad letting you drive his Audi with only 3rd party in the first place. I think this gives you ground to have a car of your own… maybe they could chip in??

        • @Lucky13: Maybe they could purchase a second hand dodgem!

        • +1

@rockman117: It is kind of true - that little ding will cost him a few hundred dollars per year extra because he's now considered an insurance risk

The insurance is mostly there for major damage or total loss of the car

        • -7

          You are an A-hole…

I wish similar happens to you and we then all laugh on that…

        • -1

          @oliman:

I comprehensively insure, so it'll never happen.

      • +13

Drives an Audi Q7 and won't pony up for Comprehensive? Sounds stupid to me

        • +4

Second hand Q7 are actually not very expensive second hand. They're sub 30k but they're expensive to insure due to displacement and age.

        • -4

          @tshow:

OP is a checkout operator it is most definitely an expensive car to him. Sounds like He loves a gamble to be driving any car over 20k without insurance. Woulda been a hit with the supermarket checkout chicks! Ballin on a budget and all that

        • @Cheap Charlie:

Based upon the comments it would appear the OP's father has comprehensive insurance on the vehicle

He said in his own comments that his dad has Third Party only

    • +2

dam cars are so expensive :( my dad is going to a wrecker on arncliffe tomorrow. at least i have an idea of how poor ill be. cheers

      • +3

Wrecker? That's drastic! You mean panel beater?

        • +4

If he's really taking it to the wrecker, please let me know first. I'll buy it as a whole car.

    • +2

Buy your dad a beer, remind him it's a 10 year old second hand car.

  • +32

Go to your room, you're grounded.

    • +10

      pretty much

      • +9

Dont worry about it, it's only a matter of time until all cars gets scratched up one way or another.

        • +40

thanks JetLi, I'm trying not to let it ruin my mood. trying to stay positive and hopefully land a graduate job soon.

p.s. big fan of your movies

        • +17

          @rockman117:

Now that you are grounded and have plenty of time on your hands, grab some popcorn and checkout some of my movies.

        • +2

@rockman117: if it realy is 3k to fix a gaurd buy a second handy imo, but if you shop at a newer smash place they are usualy trying to get business and will be cheaper than an established mob.

        • +1

@Slippery Fish: +1 for "established mob", lol.

    • +1

Enjoy your alone time….next time, just get a paint pen from supercheap and play dumb.

Also, hope your Dads not on ozbargain too - now hes knows your gonna get the cheapest, nastiest panel beater around full of bog and mismatched paint

      • +1

Also, hope your Dads not on ozbargain too

Nope, no Audi Q7s on the list :P

      • Lol cheap doesnt have to mean nasty.

        • -2

          Fart

  • +4

The door aint that bad, it's the damn dent. Anyways it's not a 3k job, not a chance, unless the paint is 24k Gold. If you go around to a few places, you should get it done for around the $800 - $1000 mark, depending on work loads of panel shops. In terms of repair it is no where as hard to fix as it may look.

    • +1

thats good news :) yeah the dent is horrific, its a bit cracked but that could be from the paint. ill let you guys know the outcome tomorrow .

      • The dent isn't bad, looks like you can get behind it without having to take the panel off. I know people here in Brisbane that will fix that for $600 Metallic, $700 Pearl paint. I'd be surprised if you can't get it done for around $800.

        • Depends on the city but you need to go to a panel beater or smashnrepairer for a quote. Tell them its a cash job and not insurance and they will do it cheaper.

They will mostlybog the door and pull the crease then fill with bog and paint. Probably 1 whole days worth of work at the most

      • its second hand 2006 diesel if that matters.

        You did him a favour!

  • +7

The cheaper you get it done for the more bog you will get. Good panelbeaters use minimal bog but they are expensive. And they will need to repaint the whole door an rear quarter panel. If it was an insurance job it would be around $3k. If you pay cash in hand and you get a cheaper job done you may get away with $1500.

    • +2

Have a close look at the damage to the rear quarter panel. Looking at the fourth photo, it seems to have been repaired before with body filler.

If that's the case then a cheap repair should be acceptable. I doesn't seem fair to demand a new panel to replace one that previously filled with bog.

  • Just curious, since you are in nsw, are you on your red p's, green p's or full licence? Don't worry, as long as you learn from your driving mistakes. I did that before

    • full license. yes shameful. I'm actually a really good driver, i usually pull up the driveway fast except this time i came home from the other direction, pulled in turning left and forgot how big the q7 was. guess I'm not as good as i thought i was

      • +1

I'm actually a really good driver,

Yeah well, you WERE a really good driver.

        • +13

Nah give him a break. Shit happens.

        • +2

This is quite minor for a P plater, it's not like he caused a car accident. 'Tis but a scratch.

        • +1

          @Cronut:

"I usually pull up the driveway fast"

          Yep, good driving right there.

      • +4

The younger you are the better driver you (think) you are!

        • +3

I can vouch for this. The older I get the more things I see and the shittier driver I think i am.

      • +6

I'm actually a really good driver, i usually pull up the driveway fast…

I fail to see the correlation here, that a really good driver would go up a driveway fast. Think it through on what could happen, one time it may not be an inanimate object you hit, but a skittish pet animal that was frightened or a child that runs out from behind a bush without looking. Driveways usually involve public footpaths so care needs to be taken. Not scolding anyone, just pointing out that one needs to drive to the conditions.

        • +1

Amen. Getting off topic here but I'm amazed at the speed some people drive through packed car parks with low visibility and lots of kids around

  • It doesnt look like a deep scratch, so maybe under a grand to touch up and make it look like new again.

Edit: on second look, it appears quite bad for some areas. U can go ask and get quotes from panel beaters.

  • Don't forget the door handle is damaged too

    • lol, thats extra $100

  • +1

Watch Tom Cruise in Risky Business. No problems.

  • +1

And this is why I love Ozbargain

    • +2

Just call the Bikies to sort it out

  • If they need to respray it will be very expensive to get a proper job done, other option is to search wreckers for a car door in the same colour which is a much cheaper option if you can find one. Cars cost a fortune to fix when things go wrong. For a car like that you really should have comprehensive insurance.

  • +3

Polish off the white paint and have another look.

    • +1

Exactly, most of that will come out fine, the dent is the only bit to worry about.

  • Ouch. Thats a deep 'scratch'. Your dad is very brave for only having 3rd party on that type of car.

  • +2

    go to some panel beaters.

    look sheepish.

say your dad is getting back from overseas in a week and you borrowed his car without his permission.

say you are a poor cashier.

hope that they take pity on you and offer a minimal quote.

the door looks pretty clean. cut and polish may remove that white paint. if the door paint scrap is deep then start ringing wreckers to see what a door would cost.

the rear quarter panel hmm. needs a bit more work from professionals.

the handle could be touched up with touch up paint from super cheap. light sand on the graze area. hard to tell the full extent of the damage from photos alone.

    • +7

      go to some panel beaters.

Try not to scratch the car more on the way.

      • Savage.

  • It's two panels and pop the dent - probably $800-$1000.
    Not a massive job.

I've seen panel beaters go cheap and spot fix this up to the point the of the wheel arch seam, but the two panels should be no more than $1000 I'd imagine.

  • I have an audi a4 2007 and everything about them is damn expensive. Eg 1 xeon headlight is over $800, glove box over $1000, a power steering hose $550 so no way that damage is going to cost $800 - $1000 as some have suggested. Its probably going to cost anywhere from $1500 upwards. Once repairers etc hear the word Audi the price jumps.

    • Are those dealer prices though? I'm sure that you could find alternatives from overseas cheaper than that, even when factoring in shipping costs.

    • +1

It's because they're really shit to work on. On some models you have to drop the whole front bar to change the bulb. You may even have to lift the engine and dismantle the whole front end for a sensor. Hence the price.

    • You're talking about replacement parts. The damage shown above alone is not worth any replacement parts, just bog standard (pun intended) repairs. $1000-1500 estimate is about right.

  • +1

Gosh, first time I am glad my Dad drove a 1970 something corolla wagon. Hope it all works out O.K. for you. Think most of us all do something like this at some stage.

  • Ask Ferris. He had a friend who….

  • +1

    try
    http://www.gowstautobody.com.au/

    have used them over years and they are nice;
    the jobs are good too.

  • Hi, Rockman, the damage does not look so serious. Why not try to use those effective polish and cut stuff to clean those unwelcome white paint. Do it quick and at least your Dad would appreciate of your initiative , and just don't sit down there and doing nothing. However if I were your Dad, I wouldn't mind the so-called damage done and of course as I said earlier you should do to get it look good first and not just crying doing nothing. I am a very old senior.

    • +3

Sure, that'll just buff right out. Keep dreamin'.

OP, what was the white thing that you hit, and how much damage is there to that?.

      • Actually is will be quite easy to remove most if not all of the white paint. Its obviously sitting on top pf the cars paint and probably many times softer. Its just fence paint.

  • +1

The 4th picture contains a portrait of Rasputin. Cut it out, put it in a frame and enter it in the Archibald.

  • +7

Can you wipe off the white paint first so we can see just the real damage.
That white stuff is just paint transfer. It will wipe off with water, maybe some soap.
Example, before: http://i.imgur.com/cjOpIzJ.jpg <— Looks pretty bad?
Example, after: http://i.imgur.com/430ckoY.jpg <— it is actually just the black part that is scratched

Since you didn't wipe it off before the photo I'm assuming you(/your dad) didn't realise that.

Looks like the dent is the worst part.
I'm a bit concerned with that fourth photo. Has it been damaged before? There is a chip that has some sort of filler underneath, which may mean it was patched up before.

  • +7

    You are so grounded Butters!

  • Probably 1-2 G's to fix

  • whatever a normal car repair costs, double it cause its an audi

  • +2

First step is to cut and polish that white paint off (including the door handle)

It will look a lot better and I bet you will find cheaper quotes from the panel beaters too as the 'shock' factor will be gone.

Your dad may appreciate the effort too as he won't have to drive a car around with obvious damage.

I'd say around a $1000 for a half decent job.

  • yo might be able to ask a mobile scratch and dent repairer what can be done and how much.
also, the only issue you may run into is that they may want to spray the whole panel to blend the new paint with the old paint which is where you might get a cost blow out.

    good luck.

just get lots of quotes from mobile repairers and crash shops and resprayers.

  • +1

I've asked at a smash repairers about similar damage on a 2013 Camry and been quoted $1400. Don't forget, they don't just repair the area of the actual damage, but blend in the paint evenly on that side of the car — according to the repairer all the way up to the front side panel near the bonnet. So, like others have said, because it's an Audi you're probably looking at $2k upwards. Good luck with everything, I hope it works out ok for you.

  • Wife turned pass a bollard too quickly. Had something like that. Looked worse, paint was flaking off and metal was showing. 2008 white ford focus. Had a mobile smash repair guy come over. Did everything for 300-400 (Can't remember) in Bris last year. Did a good job, cleaned off the rust and returned the metal to shape too. Only problem was the colour matching. Old white car, up close, it was obvious that it was a touch up.

From your pictures, it looks like the only difference from mine is that you have some damage on the adjoining (bumper?) panel. Mine was completely abraded but on one panel.

Tip, reverse into your garage/pass any high barrier into property for low speed manoeuvres. The rear view mirrors help a lot.

    • +4

There is no way you could get a touch up guy to fix it to a standard where you can't see the damage from across the room.

That's like getting a beauty therapist to fix someone who has been has been shot in the face.

      • +1

I'm not complaining. Mentioning because at the price the tech did not blend the paint very far up the panel. Old car. Just wanted to have a decent cover up + rust protection. The job was good though. In a room at dawn light without any direct lumination and movement, the damage was not visible at all.

        • I agree, if it was my white 2008 ford focus, I'd attempt the touch up guy first as near enough is good enough. $2k would be 40% of the car's value.

However a newish metallic Audi, there's no way a touch up guy could blend in the paint to a good standard.

        • @JB1: True, depends on what the dad wants though. Our priorities are different from the get go because I would very likely not buy an audi in the next 10 years.

As a side note, you'd be surprised how much a 2008 ford focus is actually worth.

        • @lolbbq:

My estimate of $5k, assuming it's not an XR5 too high?

        • @JB1:

Too low. Somehow looking at the prices of Automatic ford foci LT CL 2008 <100K travelled (only in that year don't look at 07s or 09s). You would be looking at prices above 10K. It is not like one or two day dreamers either. There are more than 10 (18 listings $9K+) nationwide, good spread among most states but only 3 more expensive ones in QLD. Weird eh.

Of course if you look at 07s and 09s you could get a much cheaper car. I wouldn't pay more than 10k for something older than 6 years.

  • +1

It's an expensive car so make sure it's done properly.

I wouldn't expect much change from $2k but I don't use cheap and nasty panel beaters.

I suggest you contact a place that specialises in Audi or other prestige cars. They will charge more but should do a much better job than your run of the mill panel beaters.

If it was a Commodore or Camry that's a different story.

  • +20

Hi mate, give Sharpline Paints in Moorebank a call. Ask to speak to the owner, Mitch. He's a young guy with a lot of experience who set up the business not long ago. very impressive work.
