I'm sure it will be way cheaper in the near future, but this seems to be the best price around currently for AU stock (and warranty).

doesn't this apply to all technology?

    • +4

      no shit bro

    • +1

Ah well, you are not wrong. We can get S5/S6 at far cheaper prices now. But then it's more about 'what' and 'when' we need things :)

    • I see nothing wrong with @nuggetbro's comment #fanboys.

      • But they're not saying he's wrong. I don't see anything wrong either.. but can understand why he's getting the kind of (albeit maybe a little unnecessarily harsh) responses he's getting

      • stating the blatant obvious and pretending like it means something to people who want the phone now.

  • +5

$1K phone (sigh)… how?? why?? great deal for some though, am sure!

S7 edge is awesome gadget. But not the one I need now…with this price. Don't upset OP, I didn't say it's not a good deal, just me not ready to pay that much

  • This is for the 32gb for those who are wondering.

  • -2

It will be sub $800 in 2-3 months

    • the s6 still isn't below that… edit (well its below that on Kogan now, wasn't a month ago when i looked)

though I and it seems everyone else want a 'white' one… i have no idea why they and Apple don't make enough white versions… they're always sold out first

      • White is superior, less visible finger prints on back

        • hehe my thinking is its easier to find… harder to overlook

        • White I think looks really bland for S6, it doesn't shine as much. Though I guess it's preference (White goes really well with cases as a result, other colours don't blend in with the case well imo).

    • S8 talk will be out in 2-3 months

  • Black only it seems

    • yea White is all gone, White is always superior to black people always put finger prints on their phone and it's harder to see on the white one.

      • +8

White is always superior to black people

        comma's are important!

        • Depends on how you read the post. He did also mention "it's harder to see on the white".

So depends on how you read it and what you are referring to .

        • @Baghern "comma's are important!"

Good call! A comma would be better than nothing, but a semicolon is probably best for these two related but independent statements.
"White is always superior to black; people always put finger prints on their phone and it's harder to see on the white one"

Please note that proper apostrophe placement is also important. "Commas" doesn't need one. :-)

      • White Power!

  • Gee that's a lot of cash for a phone, just can't justify that in any way.

  • A PAY LESS card is an eftpos card bonus offer on selected items or purchases. You’ll need to claim your bonus eftpos card online at thegoodguys.com.au after you’ve purchased the eligible product at its full ticket price. When you complete the online claim form, you’ll need to enter a valid email address. If your claim is complete and valid, we’ll arrange to mail your PAY LESS eftpos card. Before using your card, you’ll need to activate it within one month at www.activatemycard.com.au/thegoodguys. Find out more

Personally I wouldn't consider the product as discounted to $1099 since you probably need to spend more money to to make use of the EFTPOS card.
The amount that comes out of pocket is not $1099

    the title should be S7 + a $150 Gift Card for $1249

    • Well… since I jumped on this… I'm just hoping that doesn't count for 28degrees Price Protection. Would be nice being able to claim the difference from original price in 6 months - better than a straight discount would have been.

      • How does the pr8ce protection work? So in 6 months theres an online store thats cheaper what do u have to do? Is there restrictions to what time of store it is? Like if online store is cheaper is that ok? What if overseas? What if ebay online special? What do you need to give them to do this service?

        • +1

Must be a store of the exact same name as the original purchase. Also must be in Australia, and I think needs an ABN, so grey imports are iffy.

          Never tried with ebay.

  • No samsung anymore. It is March of 2016 now but s6/edge still stay in android 5.1.1. They just want customers to buy a new phone year by year but they never think about to maintain old ones, even the flagship model.

    • A lot of S6/S6 Edges are getting Marshmallow, it'd likely be here next week or in following weeks (G920I models are starting to get Marshmallow, Indian one got it last Satuday, Nepal one got it yesterday). I know these because I've been following what Samsung has been doing and I too have been tad bit annoyed by their delay on the souther hemisphere models. I honestly don't think customers have to chase the information like this.

I am not saying that it's right for Samsung to delay the update like this, that said, it's coming.

      • My S4 took a good year after the rest of the world, to get KitKat. Or was it Lollipop?

Honestly, I much prefer LG's update speed, but the locked bootloaders…

        • I doubt it'd take that long (then again, I really shouldn't tempt fate like this). Especially given that they are planning on releasing a service that requires updates on the firmware. That said, since the G920I model firmware is out, you can flash that on your device. I chose not to because I cannot be bothered to do so (+ I kinda want to wait for Samsung Pay's release, since I do know that downgrading got more messy).

I kinda agree that LG have been fairly good with updates with their LG G2 onward. LG has been one of the, if not, the best in terms of firmware speed (barring Google of course) with G4 (not too sure about G3's speed, since I've not followed that device). I think being a Nexus manufacturer and not modifying Android much really helped with the speed.

Talking about S4, my S4 active was from Kogan (my brother bought it, and he left it with me). I've softbricked it on the first time I tried to do anything with it, because I tried to install a firmware from Australia (and it didn't work somehow, which was peculiar). Ah, good old days, when I could not give a single (profanity) about KNOX.

        • @Oversimplified:

Ah, I don't care enough about Samsung Pay. Picked up the S7, took it home, rooted within the hour. Now Titanium Backup can go and restore everything :)

          Knox? Bah.

        • @elusive: The only reason that I care about Samsung Pay is that I have been using phone for paying things. I tend to just leave my wallet at home when I am going for a walk or something. Samsung Pay would allow me to use the phone with the older machines without NFC which would make me care even less about leaving the wallet home. It's slightly sad that they require KNOX intact, but I guess it's better that way.

That said, yeah, I do miss some features from having root access. I do have a NFC ring, so I really want to use xposed module so that I don't have to turn the screen on to use the NFC to unlock the device.

  • If you use a CC with price protection you can get $150 plus the difference in price in 6 months as the invoice will show the full price…could make this real cheap.

  • So being am android device, why I'd this 800 bucks better than the Sony m5 on sale for 300 atm in the Sony sale?

    • There are 2 ways to look at this. First why spend much on a phone at all when all basic things can be done on sub $100 devices. And there's nothing wrong in that approach. Other approach is to just go after the best available gadget, quality flagship with latest technology, aesthetics, thickness, design etc. Now I'll repeat there is nothing wrong in the first approach, in-fact in many ways that's quite sensible as well. However, this phone is more for the second approached.
Reading reviews, specs or even looking at this phone side by side with something like (even costlier) iPhone 6S Plus can give us a very clear idea of why it deserves that price (atleast at launch) :)

      • The third way, which was what I was referring to, is to buy a top spec phone on sale for 300ish, which is local stock and warranty also, and 3Gb with an (albeit helio) top of the line proc. If we graph cost of a phone vs specs/feature set it would look like and exponentially increasing curve with cost rising against diminishing returns.

The features that these phones are being sold on are getting more and more useless, eg. I remember when the s4 (or was it s3?) came out and we were told it would pause video when you looked away, and you could use gestures to control the phone from a distance. I don't think I ever heard of anyone use these features, and if they or similarly useless features are being used to justify the increase in price compared to (in this case) the m5, then it's surely time to just stop buying flagships on release

        • +1

I kinda agree that phone specs are increasing at a diminishing rate and a lot of features that they add are useless. That said, they did add features that I think are good. Fast wireless charging looked nice, quick charge 2.0 is nice, Samsung Pay is something I am looking forward to, waterproof feature I think is nice as well. Bringing the SD card support was a nice touch as well in my opinion (which I am slightly peeved about). Camera always get better with newer phones, so I don't think that's anything to mention. SoC always get better with the newer model as well.

I think the phones are going through what most electronics go through, you don't need to replace them because many aspects of the device is good enough to feel decent for several years. SoC and RAM wise, most phones from 2014 would still be decent enough to last years. I've seen someone who still uses S3 4G (2GB RAM) without any problem (I think its time for her to move, since the screen's all cracked, but she wants to use it till it dies on her completely).

I kind of think of this as being similar to what desktops are like. Newer parts are coming out every now and then, but mine does what I want it to do so I don't replace the parts. When newer part comes out and when I feel like changing parts, that's when I start caring about the releases. Top of the line do exists for these (980TI, i7 blah blah blah etc), but the amount of performance I get per dollar is better with models from past usually (with them being discounted), that said I'd look into it depending on what I want.

I personally still think the phones are still bringing in more features. Whether you think they are reasonable or worth the price is up to the person to decide I reckon.

        • @Oversimplified: I tend to agree, however the fast charging thing while potentially convenient has never worried me since phones can now get TBH rough a day (at East for me) of use. Apart from that slow charging is a virtue, I am using an old 500ma charger and it takes about 7 hours to charge my phone, perfect since I sleep that long usually. Especially important since batteries are now fixed so you can't just replace one when it's end of life.

        • @Jackson: Well, I think having a feature is always better than not having a feature given that it doesn't mean that you lose out on something else. I usually use fast charging when I've forgotten to charge the phone at night or when I feel like I need slightly more juice than what the phone has. Whether it damages the batteries, I think is questionable at best (I've not seen someone who've performed a controlled experiment yet). Besides, I think batteries are not meant to last you forever, I think after about an year, it's generally going to be degraded enough to be noticible.

About batteries not being replacable, I never understood some people's reaction. I do agree that it's harder to replace them and it's more pricey to replace them, but it doesn't mean you cannot replace them. Many people reacts to non-replacable batteries like as if it means dead battery mean you just have to throw the phone out.
