  • Can anyone tell me how well this would compare to a HTC M8? My M8 has developed a nasty "really doesn't charge well" problem the last couple of days? (IE: took all morning to charge to 100%, tried multiple chargers and cords).

    • +1

I moved to this from a Samsung S5 and it benchmarks around the same I blew away touchwiz after a year of waiting for updates etc. So I find it an improvement in speed and the screen is larger but LCD vs Amoled , So you may find that this phone maybe on par with the HTC on some things but lack in other areas such as camera(ive heard the HTC camera is relatively good) Also was reading that Android Marshmallow will be coming to this phone mid year. Just need some good cyanogenmod roms.

      • HTC Camera is far from good. The camera on the M7/M8/M9 are overall a very bad with the 8MP 'ultrapixel' on the M8 just straight shocking.

    • HTC is not repairable for any damage!

      • Apparently they are… Got my charging port replaced for $50 from a local computer repair store, repaired within the day. Very happy with that.

    what does he transform into?

I feel bad about saying it because I like Clear and the work he's done getting deal for OzBargain but as with the last geekbuying.com deal I feel the need to point out that after I successfully ordered a Mi Pad 2 for my mum, I recommended another person buy one from them.

The site said there was stock when we ordered but there wasn't. Four weeks later they say stock came in but it was more expensive than when we ordered so she'd have to pay an extra USD $12 before they'd ship it. She paid the extra USD $12 and it arrived in about 2 weeks.

Apparently gerardo66 had this same issue: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/3588052

Clear has offered to ask geekbuying about it and I gave him the order details but it's only been a couple of days so unsurprisingly there's no resolution.

I don't think they'd try this rip off on a Clear posted OzBargain deal but they are dodgy.

    • +3

Don't think you should feel bad. Correct me if in wrong, clear gets a kick back from geekbuying?

    • I'll try and have an answer for you tonight.

      • Answer about the kickback? Panama Papers?

    • I ordered a tablet. They advertising on site right now. I get mail saying no stock after a week.

I come here asking rep if there is stock and get a yes, when clearly they dont have it.

They are prob looking at the exchange rates before getting stock.

Gonna file dispute. I'm going elsewhere.

  • Do yourself a favour and get the Note 3. Note 2 battery life is pretty weak.

  • Well good deal but if you want better build quality then mi4 international version could be a better deal from everybuying for about $206

  • Great deal on the 32GB prime version.

However… do you happen to have a deal on the 16GB version? :D

  • -1

Yep, as Sylon said… DANGER, DANGER!!!

When you have the screen on and set to 'auto brightness' it CHEWS through the battery! I am currently plugging a 2.4Amp car charger up it's a**e and it's SLOW to charge as well!

Would of given it a miss! It's a bloody awesome phone but the battery… OUCH! It's that bad that I'm pondering selling the phone and switching to an S6/edge (because I can grab them cheap).

    • I of (I mean "have") the 16GB version of this and I always of (I mean "have") the screen on auto brightness basically all the time and find the battery life fine.

      • Well the 32GB model has had the wick turned up…

  • Has anyone else had problems getting a 64g micro SD to work?
It worked fine in my galaxy note 3, but when that died and i bought the xiomi it just wont read the card…
My 32g card works fine though.

    • +1

      Officially it only supports 32GB.

There are some posts on the mi forum about it.

      http://en.miui.com/thread-171225-1-1.html

      • oh serious? The sites that i checked the specs on said it accepts 64g :(
This is about to become my next decent backup phone.

        • Some people mentioned getting it to work with some cards and specific formats. Might be worth a shot.

  • what great price, too bad i had purchased the lenovo k3 note :(

    • Why not use 2 phones? I do ;)

      • +1

        Why not use both?

Clear? No 16GB? You can say no… (I'm just hoping you say yes)

    • +1

      I'll ask and find out.

      • Did you manage to get anything?

        • Still waiting for a response. I'll have an answer for you tonight/tomorrow.

        • @Clear: Ok, thanks.

Do you know when this deal expires?

        • @illumination: Unfortunately they're not able to do on it currently. The coupon is supposed to be active until the end of the month.

        • @Clear: Ok no problem. I'll probably just get this then. Thanks for checking.

Also, is the 2% coupon code we get sent when we sign up for an account stackable with this + CR? I guess the CR question would be for CR directly huh?

        • @illumination: Coupons aren't stackable so you'll have to use this coupon and CR. There is a chance that CR won't pay as the coupon is not listed on their website, but from my experience they do.

        • @Clear: Yea me too lol.

Ok I'll just use this coupon + CR then (since this coupon is bigger discount).

          Thanks again :)

        • @Clear: Hey Clear I just saw this on the shopping cart page (above the "proceed to PayPal/Checkout" buttons)

For better tracking and after sale service, "Proceed to checkout" is recommended.

It seems to be discouraging me from using PayPal, presumably due to fees incurred payable by Geekbuying.com. Can you comment on this? Does this imply that I may potentially get worse service by using PayPal as opposed to paying directly through the website?

        • @illumination: You can still pay with Paypal by going through that option.

It'll let you confirm your details including the shipping method before paying.

        • @Clear: I'm not concerned by not being able to use PayPal. I'm concerned because this sounds like a bit of a "threat" to not use PayPal because it implies that I will get better "after sale service" (this is somewhat important - warranty?) and "tracking" (order tracking?) by not using PayPal.

I know you're just labelled as "Marketing" so you might not really be involved with this aspect of the site at all but just wanted to check if you could elaborate on what exactly it means.

        • @illumination: I think it's just a bad translation. There used to an additional payment option that would give you a discount but that's been gone for months. It will have no impact on your aftersale support.

The only real issue I've found with "Checking out with Paypal" is that people end up with free shipping instead of the sometimes discounted TNT Express.

        • @Clear: Ok, I'm fine with that.

Another thing I noticed was it said "if you use fast shipping methods (DHL, TNT and one other one), you may be subject to tax" but I don't think we need to worry about that yet.

Finally, another small annoyance was I was trying to use a Coles Mastercard to pay for it via PayPal (the one that gives points and does not charge international conversion fees + forex charges) but it wouldn't let me bloody charge it in USD, so I just used 28 Degrees and decided to accept that I wouldn't get points.

Thanks though!! I guess I'll be receiving this in ~2 weeks?

        • @illumination:

The message about tax is directed more at European customers. There'll be no tax for us currently.

Is your Coles card saved in PP and set to use it's own currency conversion instead of PP? That might be why it won't let you change

On average it arrives in 3 weeks.

        • @Clear: Yep thought so.

Yes (I actually just added it) and yes and even clicked on "charge in card's conversion rate". Even after selecting this, it showed an approximated AUD amount of $190. I then restarted the whole transaction to try and "force" it to do it again, and once again I made sure I manually selected "charge in card's rate" i.e. not PayPal's rate to try and force it but it still showed AUD. However, as soon as I selected the 28 Degrees, it showed the USD amount so I just went with it.

        • @Clear: average 3 weeks for TNT or normal shipping or no difference?

        • +1

@Mcz: Normal shipping. TNT is typically 2-5 days after processing.

        • @Clear: I'm glad shipping is fast :)
Given that a lot of the sellers on places like AliExpress they give a range of "15-45 days"

    • +3

Hi illumination, I just received an email from geekbuying offering $10 off on their 16GB model which is what you were looking for(Item Number 354975)? The coupon code to use is 10$NOTE2S. That reduces the price to US$129.99.

It did state offer is for 50 pieces only though. I haven't posted a deal before but might get to it if no one has done it yet.

      • That would be why they didn't want to give me a coupon. Better jump on it before it's too late ;)

      • Ah thanks
I think I'll get this 32GB version for an extra ~$9 USD.

This is the worst phone with many Chinese bugs.
Every time I tried to use this phone phone a windows pop up and asking me do I want to install a program. I stopped all downloading, but I can not stop this pop up windows come up to screen "do I want to install such programs or games".
I will greatly appreciated if someone knows to flash and install clean rom…
    Thanks

    • +1

Did your Redmi come from Geekbuying? If not then I would appreciate it if you don't neg the deal because it's not a normal defect of the product.

To answer your question. You can get the latest global ROM for the Redmi 2 here and there are a couple of ways to install it.

You can do it through System Update
      http://en.miui.com/a-232.html

Or if that doesn't work you can try with the SP Flash Tool
      http://en.miui.com/thread-196175-1-1.html

      • +1

Warning: Using Flash Tool wiped my Redmi Note 4G's IMEI code partition, making it useless.

Google it, it's a known issue but no mention of it on Xiaomi's OFFICIAL guide for restoring with Flash Tool.

I will never touch Xiaomi again.

    • +2

This is a real problem with Chinese phones. Xiaomi has tried to fix the situation in their newer phones by locking the bootloader now.

  • Found some benchmarks (in French, but the scores aren't): http://www.htcaddict.fr/2015/10/test-xiaomi-redmi-note2-prim…

    Antutu 49296
    Geekbench 993 / 4792
    3DMark (Ice Storm Unlimited) 16637

Cross-category question: how does this phone compare, in terms of value for money, with the optus pixi 4.5 4G (at $39)?

It's roughly 5x the GPU GFLOPS disipated over 5x the pixels, for 5x the price.

With the huge and hi-res screen, and high CPU clock, I'd expect it to chew through the battery, 3080mAh though it is. gsmarena lists 11h talk-time. http://m.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_redmi_note_2-6992.php

    man, this is too good.
just bought the same phone from another supplier for $220

so tempted to buy this one as well so I can have one phone in each hand.
    LOL

  • I have been using this phone for a few months and am very happy with it. Camera is mediocre but haven't experienced the battery life issues others have, in fact the high capacity removable battery was a selling point for me. I didn't care for MIUI so flashed a CM12.1 ROM I found on XDA which has proven very stable. Bought through Vickmall.

    • Thanks johnnygolden

I have the Xaiomi Redmi note 2 and have tried everything imagineable to try to root it and fail at every turn.

Can you please share some insights as to how I can root this phone?

      Thanks very much in advance.

      • A sure method of rooting the RN2 is to flash a fastboot rom together with TWRP using SP Flash Tool & then flash SuperSU via TWRP.

        • Thanks very much Kusala.

Your links and advice is very welcome.

However I'm a total newbie to this process.

Is there an "idiots" step-by-step guide to follow your method/advice please?

I searched the XDA forums but was not able to find it.

Thanks very much for all your help.

        • +2

          @hello007:

This is the SP Flash Tool method for rooting the Redmi Note 2.

From the links above, download these files to your pc:

          • Fastboot rom - I suggest the Redmi Note 2 Latest Global Stable Version
          • USB VCOM Drivers
          • SP Flash Tool
          • TWRP 3.0.2
          • SuperSU 2.52 [transfer to phone]

          Preliminaries:

          Main procedure:

          • Using SP Flash Tool, flash the fastboot rom following this tutorial. It utilizes an older version of SP Flash Tool, but the method is the same. A very important precaution is to uncheck PRELOADER before flashing the rom [flashing an incorrect Preloader hard bricks a phone]. Then boot the phone [will take a while} and proceed through set up.
          • Next, following the 'Flash only part of the rom' section of the same tutorial, click on Recovery in SP Flash Tool & navigate to the previously extracted TWRP recovery.img. Making sure all other files are deselected, flash ONLY this recovery file.
          • After flashing, do not boot the phone. Instead enter TWRP recovery by simultaneously pressing Vol Up + Power [important to press Vol Up just prior to Power to prevent normal boot]. Once in TWRP Recovery mode, install the SuperSU zip file previously placed on the phone. During this process, if a message appears asking something like 'do you wish ot keep Miui recovery?' select 'no'. If all goes well, installing SuperSU will have rooted the phone. You can check this after rebooting with the Playstore Root Checker app or by testing that the SuperSU app is functioning properly.
  • Hi OP, appreciate your work and posting such a good deal which came right at a time I wanted to buy this phone. I have decided to give geekbuying a try. I like the free TNT shipping bit. I did a live chat yesterday before ordering and was assured the Item I was getting is in stock.

Do you need our order numbers in order for you to track purchases made by OrBargainers for any kick backs you deserve and for our Orders to (hopefully) be given some kind of "priority"? Perhaps the coupon code itself identifies the transactions unique to OzBargain source. Hope it all goes well for my phone to arrive as expected and I will have good feedback to share with the rest :)

    • +1

The unique coupon tracks the purchases for Ozbargain.

If you ever have any issues just send me a PM with your order number.

  • Hi Rep,

I might be being a bit impatient here but is it possible to check the processing status of my purchase? I made the order last Wednesday (6/04) and payment has been confirmed but it has been sitting on processing for a couple days. Are you able to provide any updates? (If so, should I PM you my order #) Thanks in advance.

    • Try the live chat in the top right of geekbuying.com and see how you go.

    • I tried live chat and was advised that they were in stock and shipment is expected to be processed "this week".

Received my phone on Friday, delivered by TNT express shipping option, got dispatched email Monday so very fast delivery once processed. Phone works great, getting good 4G speeds using ALDI Telstra sim. Well done Geekbuying…happy customer.

    • Did you install a custom ROM?

  • I haven't installed a custom ROM

    • Click "reply" to my comment so I can get an alert next time ;)

  • +2

Phone delivered today. Fast TNT shipping, package received in good condition. Overall happy with purchase.

  • Order placed on April 12, dispatched April 15 and in my hands April 18. Very happy with the service. However, I have no 3G or 4G data service on the phone. I put the same sim back in my old phone, 3G data signal not an issue. Also the signal on regular 2G drops in and out, but I can get it to connect for 2G data (very slow E is displayed beside signal strength). I have tried manually setting the apn, still no luck. Maybe it's faulty,or missed out on the correct rom being installed prior to shipment. It does have play store(works fine over Wi-Fi) and multiple languages. Miui version is 66.66.77.00(LHMCNCF) Stable. I have this version of the phone http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-2-Standard-…. Supposedly supports WCDMA and FDD LTE. I cannot get it to work properly. Any help greatly appreciated.

    • You shouldn't have any problems connecting to 3G/4G. How many sim slots are you using? Only one slot can be used for 3G/4G at a time & data should be enabled in settings.

You can check which bands are available by keying in this sequence on the phone app * # * # 3646633 # * # * [spaces here to prevent OzBargain code kicking in] to enter Engineer Mode, then under Telephony, select BandMode & you will see SIM1 or SIM2. In one of these sim slots, you should see four UTMS bands & seven LTE bands. If these aren't displayed, then you've received an unmodified phone. This can be rectified though by flashing a different rom.

      • Thanks for the reply. Yes, I can see all those bands. I have also tried this sequence * # * # 4636 # * # * to select networks. I don't know what's going on. It should work. I am only using a sim card in sim slot 1. Data is enabled. I can only get 2G edge data speeds. Next step might be flashing the rom to Miui 7.

        • It may be worth checking the APN again. Which network are you using?

Otherwise, flashing Miui 7 will hopefully fix the problem.

        • @kusala: I'm with Amaysim. It's connecting at 2G. Adjusted the APN setting to that provided on their website. https://www.amaysim.com.au/help-support/troubleshooting/how-…. I have also tried an Aldi simcard that is working in my other phone. No luck. Very frustrating.

        • I can see someone has been messing around with this phone prior to shipping. Greasy fingerprints all over it, some package protection removed, battery was fitted (with a piece of tape over the connector) and scratches on the battery/screen protector. First impression wasn't good. It doesn't present as new. All in all, except for the fast shipping, I'm a bit disappointed with the whole experience so far.

        • @MTWallet:

I see your APN is yesinternet. I'm using an Optus data sim in slot 2. Apart a different APN, settings are the same as Amaysim, except Authentication Type is not set.

Under SIM card settings, do you have Preferred Network type set to LTE?

You can download global roms here: http://en.miui.com/extra.php?mod=rom/download&r=274&mobile=n…

        • @MTWallet: Order number? I'll speak to GB about it.

The staff usually open the packages and load English ROMs onto the phone.

        • @MTWallet:

The original package would have been opened to modify the phone. Chinese suppliers usually open it anyway for quality control testing before despatch. It is standard for there to be a tape over the battery connector. However, what you describe re the phone not appearing to be new is not good. If overall, you're not satisfied, contact the seller & if you've used PayPal, you can be reimbursed for return postage.

GeekBuying is known as one the more reliable Chinese sellers, so it is surprising you've had this experience. In the past, I've purchased a phone & power bank from them with no issues.

        • @kusala: Thanks. Yes I'm pretty sure I have all the settings covered. I've spent the last couple of days reading up on all information available. Tried LTE preferred, WCDMA preferred and just about anything else I could.

        • @Clear: Thanks. My order number is 3642120. I understand about the package having to be opened. However, my first impression was a little more care could have been taken with the phone.

        • @MTWallet: I've passed it all on and customer service should be in contact. Please let me know if you have any difficulty with them. Sometimes the language barrier can be a problem.

        • @Clear: Thanks. I appreciate your help.

        • @MTWallet:

You can try flashing the global rom using the internal Updater feature as per instructions in the link I gave. If there is still an issue, I'd say the phone is faulty. It's a shame - I've had the same version for six months & it has been v. useful for me.

        • @kusala: Thanks, I'll check it out. Clear is on the case now, so I will wait to hear the outcome before messing around with it too much more. Seems most users have good things to say about this phone, could just be a case of bad luck.

  • How bad is the camera on this phone?

(may end up getting one as a backup since i broke my thl t11 backup mobile just today ugh!!)

  • Is there any warranty on these phones? I bought one from Geekbuying and the touch screen has gone crazy. Just doing a quick google search, others have had the same problem.
