Just in case people didn't know, these drives use 4096 byte sectors so in order to use them properly under windows XP you'll need to use the (free) WDALIGN tool, if you're using them on Vista or Win7 though they are perfectly fine. Under linux although western digital says it works fine, it doesn't so you need to use the latest version of parted (2.2) which is contained on the system rescue CD (http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page) and partition your hard drive using that tool which will alert you if your sectors are misaligned.

Not knocking the price or anything as it's a great price, i just wanted to let everyone know that in order to not lose 2/3 write performance, align the sectors right :)

Thanks for this info. What if I want to use the drive in a USB/eSATA caddy to connect to various devices, like media player, game console etc? Do I need to do the alignment before hand on an XP box?

      • Your best bet would be to align it beforehand, the tool is just here:

        http://support.wdc.com/product/downloadsw.asp?sid=123

If you notice painfully slow write speeds from your media player/console etc you can set a jumper on the drive as well which will cause a hit on write performance but not as much.

Basically the best option is to have it aligned and minus the jumper :) - regardless of the use.

Yes but PCCG = 2% cc fee charge, and higher postage. I think.

    • thanks for that - I'll take that offer - no shipping for me here!

      • +1

Good deal if you can pickup. Shipping to Melb is $14 so $179 total. No deal for me.

  • Just the right time, i was about to buy it from shoppingsquare. GOOD DEAL!!!

    • that's a pre-order - they don't have supply yet.

And shoppingsquare require you to put a 2nd mortgage on your house if you require shipping.

      • Ah…i thought i can pick it up at the store the next day ("Only 200 units in stock"), anyway will give them a call to see if they have any in stock for p/u

      • My order is ready to pick up today. where did you see its pre-order only?

I bought 6 x 2TB (Samsungs) from them a few weeks back for $187 each. Personally I prefer the Samsungs over WD but for $22 cheaper it's hard to argue with.

Top people to do business with, I can personally recommend them and if I had the cash I'd buy another 6 of these tomorrow!

  • Good deal at that price.

Warning: do not use these in a RAID. They will die. (see whirlpool)
And beware the 4K sectors when partitioning in Linux or XP (deserves repeating:)

I must admit, I've heard about RAID troubles with these drives too. I don't remember the exact details but it was enough to push in in the Samsung direction (running RAID5 beautifully), also the samsungs have no issue what so ever with 4K sectors as mine all run that fine.

If intending to run RAID, follow freddy's warning and at least look into the issues first, or buy samsung.

me being lazy, do you have the whirlpool thread?

i was tempted to grab a few when they went under 150…

These drives do have a tendency to die when put in a linux RAID array. This is essentially due to an issue with the drives head being parked too often due to the drive believing it's idle but linux spinning it up again. This shortens the life span of the drive drastically.

There is however a fix. The enterprise level drives come with a feature called Time Limiter Error Recovery (wdtler) and also a higher Idle timer (wdidle). Both of these features are not supported by WD on their consumer level dirves (black, blue, green) but are available on the internet.

The WDTLER tool ensures that the drives will not be kicked prematurely from a RAID array if using a hardware RAID card due to the longer access times etc and the wdidle tool prevents the head parking issue by increasing the timer to 8 seconds (by default, can go up to 30)

Basically you need to make a bootable USB drive and copy the tools on to it and boot from the USB and run the tools. Just make sure the drives are set to IDE mode first, not ACHI or they will not be detected.

As i said, these tools have no support from western digital and aren't guaranteed to work. After how long it took me to find the damn programs i have instead decided to upload it on to Rapidshare and post it here.

I have a premium account as well so it won't get deleted.

      http://rapidshare.com/files/376035121/wd_tools.rar

Good luck and i hope my first few posts on ozbargain have been helpful :)

EDIT: Just found out that the WDTLER tool sometimes will not work, the fix is to plug only one drive in to the first sata port on the motherboard with the drives configured as IDE not ACHI.

      • thanks for the great info and the link!
can you also post where you found the link?

        • +3

I compiled those tools together in to a rar file and uploaded it on to my own Rapidshare premium account. It took me hours upon hours to compile all of the above information/tools so i was hoping to save someone else a bit of trouble.

I got the information and tools from literally about 50 different sources all stating different things. Eventually it came down to testing it out myself (another few hours) and then learning from my mistakes.

Hopefully i can save someone else the trouble, if enough people find this helpful i'll do a proper guide on whirlpool or something.

          Glad i could help :)

EDIT: Should i post a guide on whirlpool? I'm actually genuinely curious if i've helped people out enough to warrant a proper step by step guide. Thanks :)

          • @out2kyl: defiantly specially if you can find the post that talks about them.
