  • Redemption rates are still pretty poor since the devaluation by MH

    • Outside of this promotion I was doing some comparisons for converting my Amex points.
Sydney to Bangkok. ONE WAY. Singapore Air 21250 miles +$305; MAS 27,650 miles + $209; Thai Air 38,500 miles + $???

      • Economy? Never worth redeeming points for Economy - though promotion prices seem decent here. Not for Business tho

For OneWorld, AA still has the best rates since they also tend to sell points at a discount - at least they used to be.
Though I can't say now since my calc's were done before the devaluation late March.

        • sell point? can u buy point?

        • @a1234my: Yep you can buy. Certain airlines have discounts like AA.

        • Why do you say "never worth redeeming points for economy"?
Only because "cash prices" of Business are 5x Economy, yet for points they are "only" 2x?

Have you considered that some people are more than happy to fly Economy just to get from A to B, or because you can technically get more flights out of your points by using them in Economy too?

        • @jubbing:
where i can buy these with discount price? tq

        • @a1234my: You buy it from the frequent flyer program themselves whenever they run the promotions. PointHacks is pretty good for giving updates on that.

        • @illumination:

Because in general the cost of the points + the cost of fuel/taxes for redeeming can sometimes come to double what it actually costs to fly. In terms of pure value - no it is not worth it (unless you're going Melbourne to Sydney, then those are fantastic).

For instance, (before devaluation) Etihad First Class India to Europe cost 40,000 points. If I bought miles (assuming bought, not earned - but same situation) for 2 cents a point, that's $800 for a First Class Flight. It costs 20,000 points Economy if I remember correctly, that is $400. Add in tax of $50 for each. A paid economy ticket is somewhere close to $500-$550, hardly a difference worth using valuable points for, especially with $250-$300 get's you an amazing First Class Experience, or $200 get's you Business. Essentially if First Class, that's $4,500 more of value for only $300 max - value vs points.

I say this from my perspective, that economy points are only worth redeeming when the flight tickets for economy are exorbitant, or you can't afford enough points for business (or families). If you're earning points on credit cards, those points are even more valuable because it would cost you a lot of earned points to even get economy, and a little bit more get's you business - for the 20% more than Eco ticket.

I guess you're right in a way, but your points are too valuable to throw away on economy always - you have to weight them up RATHER than thinking free ticket. Because it's not really free is it.
