A good TV… I bought one 3 months ago for $2K from Hardly Normal with the free Wii - not sure if that is still available ? Am very happy with it.

However if I was making the decision right now Id get the Samsung LA55B650 55" LCD for around $2040 instead (2 recent bargains on here).

Its an inch bigger… uses less power… and I quite like the sharp/surreal look of LCD… although Plasma do better blacks… however Panasonic is in a bit of trouble at the moment about their blacks getting lighter after a year or so of use..

Note, if you do choose to buy this deal from the JB Hi Fi site, watch out for the extended warranties.
The site is offering warranties based on a $2000-$3000 price bracket - whereas you should be eligable for the cheaper extended warranties because you are paying below $2K for it.
Perhaps you can add the warranties in store or something (they may need to do a credit/recharge to get the TV on the same invoice?)

      $349 for the $1501 - $2000

but they are actually offering the $2001 to $3000 for $325 as a special bundle, I figure they realised it was more and added a little discount. But might be worth trying to get it a bit cheaper.

Usual for that is $399 it looks like

Be extremely wary of extended "warranty" packages! Many in-house ones are not actual warranties per se, but closer to insurance policies in point of fact; and often not worth the paper they're written on! Read the fine print very, very closely, before buying one!!!

Choice magazine did a study some time back finding third party "warranties" were pretty much pointless for most big-ticket consumer electronic items, as they were worded so tightly that they actually covered little of value, and what was covered would have been superceded by statutory rights in pretty much every regard anyway! Article's sure worth a google if you have the time! ;)

Extended manufacturers warranty, on the other hand, is a completely different kettle of fish, and very much worthwhile if the price is reasonable! This is subjective; but FWIW, for me the cutoff is maximum 10% of the ticket price for a minimum of triple the warranty period! :)

        • This is true. Extended warranty's are nothing like the warranty's provided by the manufacturer and are actually insurance policies. At the end of the day, the reseller is responsible for making sure the products they sell are fit for use for the expected lifetime of the product. This goes well beyond the 1 year warranty stated with most sales. For example, if your $5000 LCD screen dies after 2 years, the reseller should be your first contact to resolve the issue and in most cases will repair the item at little or no cost to yourself (expect to argue alot here). If during the repair, they find the failure was not caused by and manufacturing fault, then you can expect to foot the bill (ie the TV was incorrectly stored).

          • @winter: Anyone had any experience with JBhifi's warranties? I've got em down to $252 for 4 years extra, is it worth it?

            • @Testeagle: I bought a plasma from the good guys with an insurance contract (extended waranty). After 3 years the screen driver component blew up. After the insurance company tried to repair it several times, I eventually approached the good guys who replaced it with an equivalent model.

So no, I think the insurance contracts they sell at these places are a scam. I think the only one that benefits is jbhifi, because it means they are one down on the pecking chain when things go wrong. Just remember that ultimately it's the reseller who is responsible for the products they sell being fit for purpose.

      • They are offering me the lower(1501 to 2000) 4 year for $252

    Full specs
    http://panasonic.com.au/products/details.cfm?objectID=5100

Jb need to update the specs to mention the max input resolution 1080p as it only says 1080i on the specs.

    • I can see 1,080p @ 50Hz (56.25KHz), 1,080p @ 60Hz (67.5KHz) and 1,080/24p @ 24Hz (27KHz) in the HDMI input specs.

      • On the Panasonic specs page they mention this. But if you look at the specs written on the JB page they don't mention 1080p which confused me for a full HD tv when I first looked at the page.

        • They mention 1920x1080 and full HD 1080 and nothing of 1080i. They miss out a lot of specs on the JB page, but it's pretty clear it's 1080p.

  • Likewise, also bought this for 2k during sales after Christmas. Quality of the picture is very good. The controls not as nice looking and practical as on an LG LCD tv, but that's not a drama. Only downside is it only has one "component" input.

  • nice price!.

my comment is about the general Plasma TVs

they are good but they are passe
they are suck way too much power.

many European countries already banning the Shops from selling plasma TVs.
Some even ban the use of Plasma TV at home.

we have to move on to other types of TV that would use less power such as the LED (LCD) TVs.

they were aruond $4000 last year and less than $1500 now.

    • "they are suck way too much power"

Its true - Plasmas do typically use more power than LCD.

But to put it into perspective, a 50” LCD might use a steady 250w per hour. Thats about 4.5c per hour (at 18c/KW) or $49 per year if used 3 hours every day.

Whereas a 50” Plasma’s may use a “typical” 270w per hour but can be lower, or as high as around 500w depending on the image displayed (black = less, white = more) so lets round up to an average of 300w per hour.
Thats around 5.5c per hour, or $59 per year if used 3 hours per day.

While $10 per year is a consideration.. its not a huge increase over the cost of LCD - but worth taking into consideration overall.

      • Oi, slow down there Daddy Warbucks, ten bucks is two Happy Meals! Some poor kid's gonna be annually deprived of two meals of dubious nutritional value and an equal number of pointless, cross-promotional movie toys! :o

It's a slippery slope from there to pathogenic parenting! ;)

  • Nice Price, No LCd can yet match Plasma for sports especially high speed or motion.

  • Yeah the old belief that Plasmas eat power is old school thinking, yes LED and LCD are better but so they should be they are newer tech. PLasma technology has come leaps and bounds ahead of the first gen models. I think they are up to generation 9 at the moment. I own this screen and got it with the bonis wii for $1999 sold the wii for $350 and sold our old tv broken for $300 so in the end I got this baby for $1399 and it rocks. Very happy with it, whilst the LED tvs look better it not that much better that I would pay 3 tims the price for the same size unit
