DGTEC Projector AND 84" Screen for $59 @ Kmart Ashfield NSW

580

Previously posted for $149 a year ago by yojabbajabba here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/177646

480p (640x480) projector with screen. This isn't going to win awards for quality but for $59 with a screen does it need to? Might be OK for kids or spare room.

Kmart Ashfield had 5 on the shelf this morning. Not sure about other stores.

  • Got it at another store a couple weeks ago for $90. So not sure if it was reduced further or just this specific store.
It's not too bad of a projector for this price, can be a little loud though which is to be expected.

    480p (640x480) projector with screen.

Congratulations, your copy & paste skills are superlative…

      • +1

        I'm still typing…😁

        • -1

Please don't make this a redundant observation about the resolution of a $59 projector then…

        • 720p would actually be useful. 480 is only good for dvds and ntsc ones at that.

        • @tonyjzx:
I deliberated buying one but agree that I'd want 720 at least if I was going to put it in the bedroom for TV or occasional movies. I am expecting it really is only good in a very dark room/at night but at 480 it would probably bug me.

        • +1

Any decent and cheap 720p projectors?

        • @edfoo:
That was all they had. It's strange, I'd never seen them there before and then suddenly they appear and they're clearance. Maybe from another store or they were buried in the stock room?

        • +1

Buy four and hook them up to your PC in a multi monitor setup?

  • Would this would be a pretty cheap way of projecting a digitally made mural onto a wall or canvas? Thanks for any info

    • +1

      yes

    • +2

Yes, though it wouldn't be very sharp (480p).

Ideal use is probably Mario Kart party (on Gamecube or older).

      • +16

        wouldn't be very sharp

        Just call it bokeh

    • +1

Everyone will think you're a high roller, dedicating a projector for the sole purpose of a mural lol

      • Oh I was only thinking for the purpose of transferring the line art, grids can be a nuisance :/

  • +4

Hah, my first home theatre projector (in mid 90's) was 320x200 resolution.
The pixels were about the size of postage stamps when projected. Still watch able.

This would be fine as a garage wall big screen for kids or maybe onto wall of house in the backyard (pool party?).

  • +1

Dare you guys to take this over a random person's place and project it on their house from the street. Set up a chair and grab some popcorn while you're at it. Would make a good prank video!

  • -5

No point buying 720p may as well go 1080

    • +4
      • 3500 lumens is a little high for a home theatre.

        • +1

Perhaps not if you want to watch it during the day. I'd be happy to validate this if anyone has a spare $10k?

    • -1

Pfft, 1080p…peasant resolution…4k or nothing you lowly serfs!

  • +4

Crap projector. Took a punt on it when they were being cleared for $99. Returned it the next day. Main issue was noise and the crap lumens

    • +2

second that. did the exact same thing

  • Good value considering cheap ones on ebay at that price are only 240p.

  • +15

    Landfill.

    • +2

      totally dude.

  • +5

I bought this a few months back. Picture quality is passible for the price, what kills it is the loud fan that kicks in every 30-45 seconds. Totally drowns out any quiet moments while watching anything. Returned the next day. Cheap while it is, I didn't want to burn $99 for no reason (the price it was at the time).

  • How loud is the noise in real world settings? I was thinking of aiming it at the ceiling for a nightlight with moon / star graphics from a laptop so image fidelity is not so much an issue. How about lamp life?

    • It's LED so the lamp life shouldnt be an issue for the life of the unit. The unit if poor quality however may be rubbish

  • Is the screen 84" diagonal (square), 84" diagonal (4:3), or 84"x84" square?

    I got a 60"x60" from cotd. 84"x84" would be a nice upgrade!

  • This would be kind of awesome for emulation of old games. The bad pq would mask the bad graphics.

    • You know what, you're right. I feel like getting one of these and playing super mario 64. That was an EPIC game! Don't forget Goldeneye too!

      • +1

I got one when it was 129, even at that price I was compelled, between my Dreamcast, commodore 64, Amiga, and DVD collection, and the occasional outdoor football game at a BBQ, it should get enough use

  • +2

I have an idea, buy 9 of them and stack them in a 3 x 3 formation, then you will get 1920x1440 resolution. Better than Full HD :P

  • I know its not portable, but search for black widow projector screen

  • -7

These days when you can buy big screen TVs with awesome quality - 55 inch for under $1k I honestly don't understand why anyone would buy a projector for home use. In the CRT days I craved a big screen and almost bought a projector many times but now it's meh. I guess if I needed portability?

    • +1

And you can get an 84" screen for under $1k…? (Or 96", if this is 84"x84")

(let alone 100"+ you can achieve with projectors)

      • -2

The question is why you would want it. How big is your living room? How often do you need to project at 84" or 100" in a suburban home?

        • +1

You "honestly can't understand" that some people might have bigger houses, with bigger theatre rooms, than you? Or that some might just prefer a bigger screen to distance ratio than you?

People do. Sorry that you find this so hard to understand.

(FWIW, my projector only projects across a 4.5m room. And even then, i'd prefer an 84" screen over the 70" one I have (it's 60"x60", so 68.8" usable in 16:9). But I have been in friend's houses who have proper theatre rooms with 120"+ screens. I guess they just didn't realise they could buy a 55" tv for under $1k!) ;)

          @caprimulgus:

That's truly hilarious. The only thing you can think of is that I live in a dingy little house and am envious? Really?

How large exactly does a room need to be to require a 100" screen? How many ozbargainers own mega-mansions exactly?

I've seen distance calculators that suggest you sit 2.5m away from a 65" and I really have to wonder what people are smoking. At that distance you have to pick which bit of the screen you look at. I can see why manufacturers want to exaggerate to sell larger and larger TVs but why are people buying it?

Most regular people I know don't care about Full HD let alone 4K. My wife and kids couldn't care less, and I know plenty of other tech geeks who say the same about their families. Oh and by the way how many of you have perfect eyesight or always wear glasses that correct to near perfect.

Not to mention the GOOD projectors and screens aren't cheap at all.

        • +4

          @syousef:

Huh? I never commented on the quality/size of your house. And no, I don't think you're envious…just ignorant.

I am not sitting 2.5 meters away from my screen, as I said, i'm sitting 4.5m (lets say 4m, giving room for the projector screen).

And this is just in a bedroom…you do realise that many people (even ozbargainers) have theatre rooms that are much bigger than 2.5m or 4.5m? You don't need to own a mansion to have a theatre room.

People buy bigger tvs because they like bigger tvs!!! Sorry that you find this so hard to understand!

And what does YOUR family and the people YOU know have to do with anyone else??? Other people have different preferences! These products wouldn't exist if they didn't!

If you can't understand this, then sorry, but you are stupid. Thank you for your pointless contributions to this deal. Goodnight.

        • -6

          @caprimulgus:

"sorry, but you are stupid" says everything I need to know about you. You don't even get the irony do you? You're complaining about me imposing my opinion on others, while imposing yours on me.

If you want to insist that normal everyday people need 100" and yet call ME stupid, knock yourself out.

        • @syousef:

Sorry, but no - the irony is entirely in your response. ;)

          (Don't worry, you won't understand)

        • +1

@caprimulgus: I hate it when mummy and daddy fight…

        • -3

          @caprimulgus:

You really don't get the difference between " I honestly don't understand why anyone would buy a projector for home use" and "sorry, but you are stupid" do you?

    • +2

TVs are fine for dancing with the chef and other rubbish.

For actual films and games, projector is much better bang for your buck.

You can get a beautiful 3D 1080p 100" image for less than a thousand bucks.

    • +4

Decent LCD projectors with a fast response rate are excellent for gaming. We've got a 120" screen in a small lounge. The motorised screen rolls up when not in use and the TV is behind it. The projector is epic for split-screen & multiplayer games. Films are excellent, and it has a quiet mode when running (Xbox One elite console on the other side of the room runs louder). Originally bought it to watch World Cup games in HD and was blown away from day one. It's 2500 lumens so can watch stuff during the day with the blinds up.

Bought the setup just under 2 years ago, and we use it daily.

Good projectors are practical and suitable for every day use. I can't imagine this one would be much good, but it is about the cost of 2-3 takeaways, so comparisons are pointless. I'm sure it's fine for playing emulated games, and would be a lot of fun for $60.

  • Even for the screen this is a good deal! I'll probably upgrade the projector if I can figure out how to mount it on my bedroom roof

    • +1

      $29 at Officeworks

      http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/m20ProductDisplayView?cat…

      Probably cheaper on eBay.

I had my 1080p projector mounted to lounge ceiling for a few years using similar bracket, to a 120" screen, used almost every night.
Awesome for medium and brightly lit movies and TV. Not good for dark movies and TV set largely at night, without a dedicated theatre room with dark walls and ceiling.
It's difficult to make a white screen project black ;)

      • Thanks!! Now to track one down in VIC.

  • None left in Ashfield :(

  • I want a pico projector to connect with my Smartphone to fix to my bed head and project onto the roof on the early weekend mornings when I can't sleep in ( but wanted to) like right now.

  • thanks OP this is a good deal,

Many versatile uses for these projectors, not just for watching movies

I need this for projecting an image to a chalkboard menu, to trace the outlines and then redraw them

hopefully i can find a store that still has stock.

What do you guys reckon is a minimum ball park for a decent home projector? Also has anyone had experience with Pocket projectors and can recommend any?

    • +1

720p is "okay" (but cost $600-800 new)
But 1080p is "very good" (and available from $600-900 which means no reason to settle for 720p).

      http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=1080p+projector…

4K is even better, and future proof, but a lot more expensive at the moment (closer to $6,000)

    • +1

I'd say $800-$1000 would get you a decent entry level 1080p, that will do the job fine.

below that, you'd probably be getting 720p (if you're happy with that resolution) or pocket projectors with poor output (colours and/or lumens). or gambling on a cheap chinese projector.

if you want top notch quality, you'd have to be spending in the thousands of dollars (even for 1080P, not even talking about 4K!).

of course, this all depends entirely on your opinion of what's "decent". if you would spend $1500 or less on a TV, then you'll probably find a $900 Benq W1070 just fine. if you're the type to spend $2000-$4000 on a TV, then you'll probably want a higher quality projector. YMMV.

personally, I am happy with my entry level 1080p (an older model Benq).

having said all that, if you just want a big picture, and don't really care about the resolution/quality, then a cheap 720p/pocket projector might do the job for you fine. not for me, but each to their own! :)

      • Thanks, I was looking at pocket projectors/720+ and a contact sent me details of a pocket projector he retails

        Mini Projector: $300

        Resolution: WXGA 854*480
        Brightness 100 lumens
        Built in Wifi
Android 4.4 Operating system so you can stream direct from the internet.

        • that's a low resolution and low brightness projector, so image quality and view-ability is going to be pretty average…but if you just want the novelty of projecting a big screen for low resolution playback (ie. streaming videos from the internet or playing android/emulated games), i guess it would do the job.

not within my definition of "decent" when it comes to a serious projector for watching movies, etc…but for the novelty of being able to project a big screen anywhere (eg. on holiday) and for watching things that don't require the best quality (a lot of TV shows), this might potentially be a decent option.

but really depends on what you're looking for, YMMV.

        • @caprimulgus: Thanks Capri, noted. I may check out a few videos and projectors in store to see what the quality of each resolution is like.
