      Right you are, edited

for the extra ~$10-$20 to buy and pick-up local (prices from staticice), I'd rather buy domestic for warranty purposes.

Given that they are Red NAS hard drives, I wouldn't worry too much about warranty.

      • Can you give an undertaking for that assurance? :)

ive had a 3tb red come up with pending sectors error on crystal disk which was still in warranty

but then another red 3tb out of warranty is still good with no errors so milage may vary etc

'Pending bad sectors' doesn't necessarily mean they are bad, but the system may suspect them as having issues.

Download & run the Data LifeGuard WD utility and sector format (Zero) the entire drive.

a 4TB drive will probably take ~8+ hours to format, but in the 20 or so various drives I have run it on only 1 actually ended up marking the sectors as bad.

The other were all cleared and continued to function OK afterwards.

      • Lucky I didn't follow your advice when one of the 1TB Red's that was less than 6 months old just died out of the blue.

PLE were great about it though and replaced it within 5 mins of testing it so didn't have to wait to RMA it.

  • Will RED fit a CCTV recorder?

    • +2

Yeah but they arent optimized for the constant write that a CCTV system will do, WD Purple Better

    • Buy / use WD Purple drives in such devices.

I have 8 drives in 2 such devices all running beautifully for the past 18 months without any issues.

They are quiet / cool running drives capable of handling multi-stream access with ease.

Oh, and for the difference in price, I would definitely buy HDD's locally, with the exception of Intel SSD's, as Intel will pay for express air international shipping (both ways) and RMA directly.

  • Dang, I just bought one out of desperation 4 days ago for $189 :(
