I'm so tempted to neg this only because it's paypal, paypalsucks!!

    • Paypal is awesome, I use them whenever I can when purchasing stuff online. When I don't receive some items, their insurance has covered it on more than one occasion.

      • +2

        As a seller, paypal sucks.

Because of their ebay protection it gives buyers a false sense of security when making purchases.

Using paypal anywhere other than ebay is simply taking money away from the merchant for no reason, it gives the buyer no extra protection compared to using their credit card and simply costs the merchant more.

    • +4

Paypal sucks if you're the seller. Paypal's actually pretty good if you're the buyer, though.

    • -1

Kittens suck! See I can make ridiculous unfounded claims too.

      • +1

        Don't hurt the kittens >:(

    • +1

Hey its a legitimate comment by lukelegend. Now if they negged the deal with that opinion, then have a go as it wouldn't be very informative.

    • +7

Frankly boonanza that sucks - a real intelligent comment and a real intelligent use of the vote. If you dont like paypal just refrain and look at another deal. What you are doing is trying to impose your opinion and wishes on others here.

Just think about it, if someone doesn't like WII games, does that make sense they neg every post on WII games??

Do you understand what negative votes are about, how it works here??

Please read the wiki and then come back here and make sense with your comments

      • Once again, why does that make it deserve a negative? You're voting on the deal, not the company.

And while you may have a valid reason not to trust them, you don't list it making the neg even more inappropriate.

        • Tomsco, absolutely correct. Some here think it's their right to neg posts because they have some emotional reason to do so. Which in itself is their right BUT they have NO respect for this community when they don't at least tell us why they don't like the deal/company.

Sorta like the old game -its a PC/Mac and that sucks. Doh! that tells me so much!

Show some respect for us here. Why do you think we introduced the need to make a comment about a negative vote, so people can at least understand where you are coming from - rationally.

And you aren't even doing anyone any favours by doing this, it just gets people offside with negative voting. Not something that any of us want.

Its Soooo simple. Just explain where you are coming from. Its not hard.

And in case anyone is stupid enough to think I am defending Paypal or this post. Just look I haven't voted either way.

          • @[Deactivated]: shouldn't those votes be removed then?

            • +1

@Trance N Dance: ah the damned if you do/dont trick.

We hammer people for giving no reason or very minimal - eg ditto, nope etc. There is a fine line.

Hopefully by haranguing someone here, they will look more closely at their negative voting and giving a little more clearer statements in the future.

By having clearer reasons then members here can assess the value of that vote for what it is, rather than the simple assumption that the deal is bad.

  • +2

The free delivery at JB is pretty good.

  • +10

yes paypal not good - they took big commisions.. tooo big!

    • +3

Have to agree here, they charge ebay fees then charge the seller paypal fees, gotta love double dipping… many sites on how paypal suck eg paypalsucks.com or paypalsucks.org etc etc etc

      • +4

yeah fees are ridiculous =( I want to to neg as well but it may be bargain to others.

        • Yes, Can't neg it, could be a bargain for others…but paypal still sucks ;)

          • -1

@lukelegend: hey im with the other guys in saying that paypal sucks but If they were really that money grabbing then why hasnt another company swooped in and taken them out with lower fees? because people are prepared to pay it thats why.

            • +1

@voter1: And all valid comments which hopefully people will read. But I don't know if I am missing the point here.

What fees do they charge you the buyer? The Seller yes, but so does Visa Mastercard and every other financial institution.

              Can anyone clarify this please

              • +2

@[Deactivated]: yeah I think people are coming from the sellers side because as a buyer - paypal is great.

                • @voter1:

because as a buyer - paypal is great.

What advantage does it give you anywhere else but ebay?

                  • +1

@anthony: The advantage is in not having to give your bank details or credit card number to another party. Paypal already has my details, and so far haven't abused them, so I don't need to give them xyz store that I don't know.

As a trader, they are no worse than banks who promote to their customers to use the credit button with a visa debit card as the trader then has to pay higher fees, or promote platinum cards which again have higher merchant fees.

                    • @SteveM:

The fees are higher than using the eftpos system (savings button) however they are not the same as accepting a real credit card.
The fee for accepting a scheme debit card is capped by the RBA at about $0.30

platinum cards which again have higher merchant fees.

A merchant fee on a platinum card is still less than what paypal charge on their fees for accepting a bank transfer payment or a vanilla credit card.

            • +3

@voter1: I don't fully agree with what you said that people are prepared to pay.

Paypal used to have so much more competitors such as bidpay, google checkout etc, but none as famous as Paypal due to their early entry to market and exclusive tie in to Ebay that gives them that much MORE market power.

There's cheaper fees with other providers, but can you use them with popular auction sites and online shopping sites? Unfortunately, Paypal's entrenched themselves in so well that it's more a case of people do not really have a choice.

              • +1

                @spriggy:

Plus their ebay buyer protection makes people think that paypal offers the same protection when they use paypal elsewhere which simply isn't true.

If buying in another currency, Paypal uses terrible exchange rates.

AFAIK Paypal doesn't list their exchange rates but do provide an exchange rate calculator, except the rate they use on you is well below what the calculator spits out.

The Just Jeans 10% off looks good except I'd rather try it on for size and buy it on the spot than go back home and order online.

      • Actually I shop quite often online (coughcough) and PayPal usually gives a much better rate than MasterCard. I check quite regularly, almost every other purchase. In fact, just this afternoon it gave me an almost US$1=AU$1 rate (US$27=A$29+). I didn't bother to check Mastercard this time, but I really doubt it would have been quite as good.

Edit: Must admit though, if you can bother applying for another card, the Wizard they talk about below sounds pretty awesome. And Mastercard has always charged me a fee conversion rate, no matter USD, GBP, JPY..

  • Okay, back to the deal, I can't actually get the site to fully load? anyone else get that?

    • Looks like somethings are broken, or very slow

    • With:
      https://www.paypal-offers.com.au/birthday/
      I'm getting:
Sorry too many people are trying to save the Pinata at the moment please come back later.

Suggests that the site is a bit busy.

      • I managed to get onto the site this afternoon just after getting the email. I played the pinta game flogged the lame score that was the current top score. Then when I submitted the was a mysql error and all was lost. I emailed them and got some generic dodgy email back.
Never got back on to the site cos it was too freak'n busy.

  • The site is borked. Doesn't load for me either.

  • +11

Here is a screen dump of all the codes from the site:
    http://upload.ozbargain.com/2010/04/22/3663_paypaldealios.jp…

    • aw thats not nice, now there is no excuse for me not to play the stupid game….

      Seriously - thanks

  • -1

"What fees do they charge you the buyer?"
no direct fees, paypal always goes on about it doesn't cost the buyer anything, FALSE, if you buy something in any other currency paypal will take a margin of about 2-3 cents on the dollar based on the market rate, you can change the option where you ask the bank to handle the currency conversion but depending on the bank they can charge more, it's about 2% or 3% last time i checked, PLUS they hit the seller for commissions and feebay charges, talk about MULTIPLE fee dipping!

    • +5

So you're complaining that there are currency conversion fees on Paypal, which you'd have to pay at any bank regardless… As a Paypal merchant, and a relatively high buyer via Paypal, I think that's a pretty silly gripe to have! It's (generally) not free to transfer money between currencies - anywhere. If you want to avoid this fee, get a different bank account (i.e. NAB Gold) where you won't be charged currency conversion fees.

I agree about the double dipping on commissions, and I'm the first to complain about how I get reamed every which way for utilizing eBay's services - but that's a fairly silly complaint to make!

    • +3

There's no fees for the buyer if you choose to use the bank's currency conversion and get yourself a wizard card.

      • +2

Gosh! That's amazing! I didn't know anyone offered this:

FAQ: What does 'no international transaction fees' actually mean?

"On the Wizard Clear Advantage MasterCard, there are no international ATM fees, no international over the counter transaction fees and no international transaction fees for when you make purchases."

Can you confirm that online purchases in USD/JPY/EUR etc are at the direct conversion rate?

        • +5

There's always a fee taken by MasterCard but I've been charged almost the same as the rates listed at XE.
e.g. for a past transaction, USD$1 worked out to be:
          xe.com = 0.9152500
          Wizard = 0.9144989
          Paypal = 0.8918980

        • +2

I use the wizard card and yes they give current conversion rate . paypal totally gouge you on more expensive items and anything over $100 I steer clear of paypals crappy conversion rates . Their buyer protection is rubbish from my personal experience . On expensive items on trusted sites just use your credit card direct and don't donate to paypal . I've been very happy with Wizard customer support .

        • You can also use a NAB Gold account (if you're with NAB) — I'm sure most major banks will have a similar scheme.

      • +2

I've purchased over USD$3000 worth of goods with wizard card already, their conversion rate is probably the best of all and absolutely no international transaction fee

        • I'll have to look into a wizard card, I've been purchasing quite a lot recently from the US using my amex card and last month spent $21,000US and got charged just under $450 in the conversion fees…

          • @lukelegend: But if your amex earns points that 21,000 is about 1/4 of a return trip to Los Angeles, and if you have a platinum card 1/3 of the needed points.

Yes i know the conversion fees get close to totalling the airfare but there is the whole getting something for nothing.

If only you could pay off the wizard card with the American express and still get the points :)

            • @anthony: You have to spend $21,000 to get a quarter of an airfare to LA? My return ticket to LA last year cost $970. No need to run myself into debt to get it either - walked into STA travel and bought it within an hour.

              • @CryssieJade:

No need to run myself into debt to get it either

I dont know about you however i always pay off my credit card in full before the payment is due.

Putting yourself into debt and using credit card interest to get points is stupid, but i was not suggesting that.

                • @anthony: I always pay mine off in full also. not coping the 20% interest charge…

True about the points, they add up quite quicky. with 21k spent i get 63k in points which i can redeem for giftcards worth around $400 or so, basically it only costs me really $50 out of pocket….

  • The Topbuy code didn't work for me. Work for anyone else?

    edit - working now.

  • +1

Accessibility is an issue. Having been getting this repeatedly - "Sorry too many people are trying to save the Pinata at the moment please come back later."

Paypal subscribe to dubious practices, and occasionally fail to honour their promotions/policies unless threatened with legal action (this has been the case for me on FOUR occasions - and yes I was stupid enough to give them those four chances).

Paypal for me? No thanks. But that's just me.

    • Yes I'm also getting that message.

  • +1

I've never had even the slightest problem ever with paypal… I just can't understand the hate towards it

    • +1

Because you are not selling things and (in the case of ebay being forced to) accepting paypal

As a seller if someone pays me using paypal but has paypal take the funds directly from their bank account or paypal balance there is no credit card processing fees for paypal but they still charge me their normal fee, just because i have a seller account.

If someone buys something from a sellers online store (not ebay) and pays with paypal the seller pays a higher fee to accept paypal compared to a normal crecit card gateway and the buyer receives no benefit to using paypal

      • the benefit of paypal is that u dont hand ur info out to every store u shop from

        • But using paypal or giving the store your credit card number the store receives the same information (your address and contact details)

When typing in your credit card details into an online store website the store does not actually receive your credit card details.

Your credit card details go off to a payment processor (eg eway) who do the same thing as paypal. They charge you and then give the merchant the money they owe them.
Such organisations must like paypal meet all the rules for being a financial institution.

The store does not actually ever see your credit card details.

  • oo.com.au code doesn't work

    • I had this problem at first but workedout that you have to enter it via the regular checkout, not the quick PayPal one.

  • +1

Just to highlight a good deal here:
    http://www.isubscribe.com.au/title_info.cfm?prodID=448&catID…

Atomic mag 44% off for a 2yr sub + Paypals 10% off, great deal. $108 for 2 yrs worth of mags.

NOTE, THE SITE SAYS 10%, PAYPAL SAYS 15%

    • how do you get the discount?

  • +4

I'm going to neg because most of these deals are nothing special.

Things like "free delivery" doesn't seem to be that much of a bargain and "$20 off" at Borders is definitely not a bargain when you have the likes of book depository selling for less than half their prices.

If they offered a free delivery for eBay items purchased, that would be great though.

-ve as PayPal stuck by crazysales.com.au where it was blindingly clear crazysales.com.au had not provided what was shown on their website on my order.

  • +1

has anyone tried the JB Hifi code?
It doesn't seem to be working for me..

    • I think it wasn't activated yet yesterday..
Today it worked..but everything in my cart has become at least $10 more expensive EACH….
The Angel complete season set was $89 yesterday and $109 today.

      =(

But the Clive Peeters code worked, and I got the $99 blu ray player for $89.. so I vote positive ^^

      • omg, you're right about the JB code! And the code doesn't even seem to be removing the freight. My original sub total was $187.08 with $14.46 freight, but when I apply the code it's suddenly become sub total $233.88 and still $14.46 freight!?

  • Couldn't get on at all yesterday, then lunch time today, woohoo! I played many times (to get the knack of it). BUT every time I submit my score, the SQL too many users error comes up and have to replay it again. So -neg from me.

  • gah cant get past 67500 on the stupid game

  • Does anyone know how to find out the high scores?
I can't seem to figure out how to jump the 2 flames next to each other? :(

    • yeah me either, when there's two or more right next to each other, i can only get the first and then it seems that the pinata is too slow to jump consecutively!!!

      • bastards rigged the damn thing haha :P
