Target Multi Function 11000mAh Power Bank with Jump Start $48.30 (RRP $99)

590

Was in Target for the 30% clearance and noticed this power bank has also dropped to $48.30 in price. Same as the one previously on OZB here but with further discount:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/243369

Looks like it has selectable outputs and pins for the laptops too on top of the USB output as well as the battery jumper function. Not bad price imo.

    Any reviews on these?

That is a good deal esp if its genuine 11Ah. Only way to really tell is crack it open and the cells normally have the capacity printed on them. I have one like this its a dodgy eBay one but still its awesome. They are really handy not just for jump starting but for a torch, for a 12v supply, for a USB power supply… Use it heaps.

    • As per my previous information on the 30% off electrical:

Good Price and it will start a car…
-up to a 2.5l petrol engine or a 3l diesel engine according to what I read online.
It will not recharge a car battery though, it just provide the cranking amps to turn over the engine.
In theory you can recharge it up to 1000 times and it will last for 3 years, but your experience may be different.

Check out the article and the MiniMax charger price…

The TV advertised: MiniMax still has a price of $289.95 for the TV deal…
on eBay varies from $199 to $79 direct from china,
      (MiniMax features a "Lithium-Cobalt" battery).
      http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2015/05/the-best-portable-batterie…
Even the Kogan one, which also has "vehicle battery-clips", is $100.

You can always easily return the Target power bank if you find it is not suitable.

I bought 2 online when they were available that way.

i have one from banggood https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211708

started the VN v6 in one of my vans fine. id assume this one should be able to do the same, BUT the motor needs to start pretty much first crank. if the motor needs to crank for a while they cut out.

    • jumpstart a prius maybe - depends how drained your battery is, the worse it is the moar jiggawatts you're going to need.

      • as i said above, mine started a 3.6L commo V6 without any other battery in the vehicle just fine.

yup suck it and see, I've seen some videos of these sorts of devices and no go - eg Small Mercedes

        • @BargainKen: i feel dumber after watching that guy….

but 2 things, first he didnt charge the jumper before using it which you are meant to do straight out of the box. secondly the interior lights seemed really dim so maybe he didnt have a good connection between the jumper and the battery?

one last thing, looking at the massive battery and the sound it made when it first started could it be diesel? in which case they need a lot more power to crank compared to a petrol motor so that again could be another reason.

i bought mine because i was doubtful that they would actually work at all, mine (i have 2 the same) are at the lower end of cranking amps (100a iirc) so again i was not expecting much but have been surprised at just how good they are. a 1.5l 4 cyl it will crank for about 20-30 seconds before it hits the overload cutout then a few seconds later you can crank it again, you can repeat that about 10 times before it is too flat to crank any more. obviously on the v6 its much shorter.

What a long-winded, useless idiot (profanity).

10 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.

The Lithium pack was FLAT before he started.

        • @BargainKen: A car with a completely dead battery like that probably wouldn't even be serviceable even if jump-started with another car the traditional way. And even if it did start, running a car with a totally dead battery could lead to damage to the car's electronics if the battery can't smooth out the alternator's output.

@llama: Uh watch the video again, and pay attention this time :) If you go to 4:21 you'll see he presses the button which shows its charge level at 100% - Here's a better view of the product for reference - https://no.co/products/power/jumpstarters

So its precharged. Besides when have you ever received anything with a lithium-ion cell being flat? Flat Li-Ion cells pretty much kill the battery.

        • @eug: Which is what im trying to say, depending on how rooted your battery is, YMMV with these products. My old man was using one on his truck for the better part of a month cause he was too cheap to replace the battery. An oz-bargainer at heart :)

Uh watch the video again, and pay attention this time :) If you go to 4:21 you'll see he presses the button which shows its charge level at 100%

I didn't notice that light coming on.

Doesn't stop him being a long winded idiot. I cannot listen to boring videos like that, the entire thing could have been edited down to about 15 seconds.

And doesn't stop the product being absolutely useless.

It's probably work better if the old (dead flat) battery was removed first, so that there wasn't 100A of load sucking up any engine-starting power.

  • Will this work for surface pro 3 and my 80D canon?

    • +1

If they can charge via USB, then yes. It's got a single USB port [email protected].

    • If you get a car charger lead for the Surface Pro 3, it should work. The coax output on the jump starter is listed as 12/16/19V at 2.5A. The SP3 can run off 12V 2.58A, so it should work. You will have to replace the cig lighter plug with a coaxial dc plug though.

  • Just picked up one. 4 left at East Victoria Park,WA.

  • how does the LED light work?

    • +29

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a two-lead semiconductor light source. It is a p–n junction diode, which emits light when activated. When a suitable voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons.

      • +1

thanks, how do you use the LED light that is on the unit?

        • +4

If you are in an area of darkness and wish to emit light you simply turn on the LED light and it will be powered by the internal battery pack.

Personally I would use it in times where you require a torch but don't have a dedicated torch on you. Your phone may have the same ability if you are not carrying the portable battery on you at the time.

Does any one know how long will the last charge on this

It could last for years but it's likely there will be some tiny amount of drain.

Like if I charged it and stored it in the car boot for emergency use?

I would plug it into the car to charge every three months to make sure it's charged. You could also consider a small solar panel to keep it topped up.

  • So this can only be charged using a 15vdc power supply? Would be nice if it could charge off usb, or even 12vdc in the car.

Probably the case for all these jump start packs I guess.

    • The pack comes with a cig lighter charging lead, so you can charge it in the car.

  • Is power bank as a replacement of eneloop for ozbargainers?

    • LOL. 68800mAH. haha

  • Does anyone know if this is this 11Ah at 12 or 5v?

    • would be at 3.something v

what ever the voltage of the cells are which is 3.4 or 3.7 or something (without googleing i cant remember exactly what voltage lipos are)

    • Judging from the weight, it is 11Ah @ 5v.

      • nope, they only ever count the cell capacity. with the losses you get within the electronics etc you would see a massively lower number if you calculated out the capacity@5v

in fact this is exactly how i got a couple of free battery banks from banggood ages ago, tehy claimed a certain mah and when i pulled the bank apart the cell inside was lower than quoted by like 5% and everyone got refunded

  • so is probably just 3 18650's inside, anyone opened one up?

  • All this talk has made me think about why we are still using wet cells in automotive and other vehicles? Since Li-Ion is already that powerful, why dont they switch it over since it's a bit cleaner overall and much smaller? hmmmm..

    • +1

you can already get lipo vehicle batteries but they start around the $400 iirc but the problem is that these battery packs just dont have the capacity to take the reserve power drain from a modern car. things like alarm, radio memory and the like need bulk loads of power. then there is the need for balanced charging of the multi cells needed for an effective lipo car battery.

there is a guy on youtube who made a car battery out of super capacitors and a battery like this as a reserve but the issue with that is that the caps drain down after a couple of days so unless its a daily driver its still no good.

i think given how new the tech is and how fast its progressing it will be a viable option in the not to distant future tho.

    • found a bit of an interesting post on a mazda forum, but it still does not make for a good full replacement of a car battery.

The experience with the use of lithium based batteries in the Boeing 787 is instructive. Lithium based batteries can be volatile, and can be particularly dangerous when enough cells are assembled together in one place to support higher power requirements such as an aircraft or automobile battery. After some fairly scary experiences, Boeing had to do quite a lot of work with the supplier to get the battery configuration to a point where problems in one cell would be properly isolated from other cells so as to minimise the risk of a runaway fire within a battery of cells.

The well known battery fires on early All Nippon Airlines (ANA) and Japan Air Lines (JAL) B787 aircraft were the result of a single cell going bad and catching fire in the battery then the fire migrating to surrounding cells until the whole battery was alight. It happened with ANA and JAL because those two airlines were launch customers for the B787, so they got to fly the aeroplane first.

I reckon that the risk of a battery being damaged in a car accident, or even in day-to-day bumbling around the streets in a car, will be a lot higher than in the relative comfort of an aeroplane avionics bay, so lithium-based batteries in a petrol/diesel engined car are a way off, methinks.

Electric cars will dominate first; Elon Musk has done a pretty good job of figuring out how to protect and isolate lithium batteries to minimise the risk of fire. He does this by powering his cars by huge arrays of individual AA-sized cells and by fitting a titanium plate under the battery pack to protect it from physical damage.

      • +4

while i agree with pretty much everything you said, and lipos are dangerous as shit, the newer LiFePO4 batteries are miles safer and do not suffer the same negative aspects like in those plane fires. you do still have to be aware of over or under charging and keeping individual cells balanced they do not have the huge risk of fire like older lipos

that being said, lipos are still in most laptops, fones and other similar devices so imho its not like they are a powder keg just waiting for a small spark, they are just something you need to have a very healthy respect for.

unless of course you know something i dont, i am certainly no expert on them this is all just from what ive read and researched because id love to replace lead batteries in my car.

        • Hard to find a LiFePO4 one that isn't expensive.

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/15000mAh-Power-Bank-Booster-Start…

          I think that is one.

Starting Current: 180A (peak current 300A)

          Would that start a 3.5l V6?

        • @shaybisc: i wouldnt trust ANYTHING sold on ebay. about 90% of the time they misrepresent their products, if your talking about a non australian/chinese seller its closer to 100% of the time they misrepresent their products.

check out the link i added above to a DIY Fe car battery replacement, im thinking about making myself one of these as a more permanent jump starter/battery replacement. with the jump packs i have once the car is started about 30 seconds later the pack shuts off and the car stalls again, i want something i can at least move cars around the yard or at least minutes if not longer and these jump packs wont do that.

but… for a car with a flat battery that just needs a jump to get going agian they really are way better than i expected before i tried them.

  • Anyone have experience using something like this with a 12v tent fan? Any idea on run times?

    • If you can find our the current draw of the fan you could work out the theoretical run time.

    • That's actually one of the reasons why I bought it. My large tent fan is 10" and draws 450mA from the jump starter. In theory there should be enough juice in the pack for 8 hours of usage at full speed when powered directly from the jumpstart terminals.

One thing to note though, the jumpstart terminals are wired directly to the jumpstarter's battery. That means it's easy to overdischarge the jumpstarter, which would damage the battery.

edit: using the coax power socket on it instead of the jumpstart terminals should be fine as it should cut off power before the battery gets over-discharged.

Something like this is a lot heavier but would be more suitable for extended use. The internal 17Ah SLA battery can theoretically power my fan for 37 hours.

      • One thing to note though, the jumpstart terminals are wired directly to the jumpstarter's battery.

actually that is not true, they have that little box built into the wires and on my banggood version they cut off the power after a few seconds. i just ran a bit of a test on mine with a very low powered 12v motor and it only keeps the connection for 30 seconds before it kills the power again.

mine is a banggood one not this exact type, but i would assume they all do the same thing because its a safety cutout so as not to over recharge once you have started your car with it. mine does not have a laptop charging port so ymmv using that

        • +1

actually that is not true, they have that little box built into the wires

I actually meant the jumpstart terminals on the jumpstarter itself, not the leads.

Anyway the little box built into the wires is simply for polarity protection just in case someone connects the leads to the wrong battery terminals. There are four STPS3045CT rectifiers in there.

        • oh, looks like the insides of yours are different to my banggood ones. mine have an IC built into it. have you tried connecting it to 12v and seeing how long it stays connected for?

i forget which type of connectors they are but hobbyking i know sells them. i was going to order some from there a while back.

        • @nosdan:

have you tried connecting it to 12v and seeing how long it stays connected for?

I'm running a discharge test at the moment and it has been going for about 15 minutes so far. This first run is only at 1C so it should be done in about 45 mins.

i forget which type of connectors they are but hobbyking i know sells them. i was going to order some from there a while back.

          They look like XT60 connectors.
edit: on closer inspection, nope! They look like EC5.

        • @eug:
well 15m is certainly a lot longer than mine which was pretty much exactly 30 seconds, i wonder how it goes when connected to a car and its getting charged via the jump starter, i assume this is why mine cuts off after 30 secs, so it does not overcharge it via the jumpstarter.

going by the pic on the target site your connectors look the same as mine which are ec5's if you look closely at one side of the connector it actually has it stamped (well, in mine anyway)
