I'll start off:

      • Depends where he works the ball park figures are $130k-$180k for this role based on his age.

funny how career madness just joined ozb to flaunt what he/she does for a living!

        • Must be from Whirlpool.

          Everyone there earns $200k

        • @GameChanger:

well it sucks because a lot of people with "normal jobs" would be looking at those people with made-up fancy titles/ claiming to be super rich on this forum post and thinking that they have a sh***y job and are living a hard life. Well. they are probably the lucky ones whilst the people trolling are jobless and can't even afford a toaster!

@Zinger: That's me all the way. I'm scrolling the comments here wondering if I'm the last working class guy in all of Australia.

I used to do strategy and m&a at a corporate as well - the grass is always greener on the other side my friend

That being said, I am now doing a real estate tech startup and I am broke as hell

    • 8 years break?

How many years did you work? At 24 you would have left the work force, meaning you only work for a short time.

      • +1

I worked from about 18 to 25, decided there were better ways to earn cash and left the workforce. I still make decent money through hobbies, nothing i'd call work though.

        • This is really interesting! What you do to pass your time?

Do you make enough to live on your own?

        • +1

@GameChanger: At the moment I'm just starting Reiki again and training for crossfit type events, with all the associated supps and healthy eating this takes up most of my time and keeps me busy. As for my own apartment, yes, I've got a place close to my parents so I can always drop by if I'm bored.

        • +1

@Tasmaniac: Good on you for doing something against the norm.

How have you handled people questioning your lifestyle? I'm sure many project their expectations on you?

        • @GameChanger: Most of my family and friends are quite supportive really, I'm also furthering myself in a more traditional sense at uni so most are just curious how im able to travel and buy decent things.

        • @Tasmaniac: That's great to hear! What are you studying at Uni? You plan on coming back to work force eventually?

    • Mate this is awsome but i'd like to know how do you pay your bills.. I mean what is your source of income. I had a mate who got made redundant and it has been 2 years since he came back to workforce. Basically he has learnt to live on bare minimum, however he is always borrowing $5-$10 here an there.. so are your family/friends basically supporting your current lifestyle.
(I do not mean to offend). I am just curious.

      • Hi mate I've got a couple of different things going on but I think I made well over 5 grand last year from OzBargain alone. I also quit drinking 2 years ago and it's surprising how much that saves.

        • +1

We must be doing something wrong. I have a family with 1 kid. My monthly minimum is $3k.
We don't drink and weekend stuff is like $100 (eating out, kids activities)
All the best to you man ..maybe I have missed the boat Hahaha

  • Okay I'll bite…

Pretty happy with where I am and the path ahead of me

    • Sounds interesting. How long have you been in this role and where do you hope to be in your next move?

      • 2 years so far. Not in a rush to consider my next role, I'm the youngest amongst my peers and still have plenty of growth opportunities before I'll be ready for new challenges.

        • That's very true. I've noticed many grads who never seem to be able to settle down and are always actively looking to jump ship as soon as they can, just so they have a "better" chance of climbing the ladder.

    • How did you become a BA? I am looking at doing a Ms of Data Sci and hoping to land in a similar position.

      • Honestly, I fell into it. My employer was restructuring and looking to upskill some existing staff - and I'd proven to have the right attributes for the role in my previous position.
I'd love to say that it's been a career goal that I took through high school - but in reality I never finished year 12 (let alone even thinking about uni). Dumb luck has been on my side with this one.

  • Age: Early 30's
    Title: Financial Controller
    Location: Melbourne

Responsibilities are very broad, and overall a stressful job due to competing priorities in different businesses and investments within the group.

    • Seems like you're on the right path - I'd consider being a financial controller in your early 30's an impressive feat. A couple of controllers I've dealt with are slightly older.

Just out of curiosity, what are your typical hours like and what industry are you in?

      • Hours - generally no worse than 8-6pm Mon-Fri. Different times of the year have different demands though - next 6months is busy season so can blow out a bit. I refuse to entertain the idea of weekend work as detrimental to family life.

        Industry - property and construction.

It is a great role and I'm constantly learning from strong management, but it can be super frustrating at times being pulled in too many directions at once due to there being a big group of companies, businesses and investments to be across.

Would I go back to professional services instead of industry? Not in the foreseeable future. That said, 7 years at midtier firms is the reason I've got this job, and the skills developed there are used often… Its just that I enjoy the industry side of it more.

        • Oh yeah, I'll bet it's hard work. Considering your level I'd say it comes with the job but hey, it sounds like it's worth a challenge.

I'm hoping to step into a similar role but I'm more interested in the IT/tech industry, so I'll see where life takes me after I get to senior/manager level in my current position.

    • Hours are Okay. Do you have overseas intra-entites or multinational acquisitions?
Do you engage external company to prepare financial reports?

      • All Australian based entities - no international structures to deal with.

External company performs a review on GPFS (not a full blown audit - relief applies) with financials prepared in house.

        • Audits of GPFS are generally a pain haha. Unless it's an RDR audit then that eases the pain a little!

    • Rhodes or Tempe?

If at Rhodes the meatballs there smoke Tempe (Somehow they're prepared better)

      • I'm not at Rhodes sorry. Not too sure if they prepare the meatballs differently over there but it should be the same process everywhere. Pretty much just putting it in the oven. Do you mean by tasting better, they are just juicier and fresher? I find that if you come during peak days like on a weekend then they are quite nice as opposed to quiet days and times where they can sit there for a little while.

        • Yeah probs just fresher lol. Can't get enough of them :S

My old man was a PADI SCUBA instructor. It's not a full-time occupation. It's not that glamorous. You need to teach a certain number of people per year to hold your Instructor status. It's fun when you do it as a hobby.

        • It's going to be more of a hobby while the Mrs n the kids are at school. Thanks.

      • +1

Depends on your experience and/or uni qualifications. My cost of living is low since I have the provided house and lunch daily.

It's a good experience however I've been told my work is one of the better places that others have been to.

I do all forms of photography but mainly weddings, corporate, models and family. I get to travel the world for free, shooting weddings and partying with my clients. Sounds like a good job but it's actually an awesome job.

Tried my hand as a chemist, environmental scientist, jeweller, finance broker and a few other jobs before I settled into this one. Been doing this for ten years full time now.

    • +1

That sounds like an awesome gig. In terms of business activity do you have a steady stream of clients to keep you busy throughout the year or is it mostly seasonal?

      • I've been doing this since 2006 so the studio always gets a constant stream of work. We do weddings all year round (average about 150 a year) and add to that, we do corporate shoots, family and other stuff which isn't seasonal. Keeps us all busy! The compeition is fierce in this industry but once you're in, then it's really cruisy and work keeps coming through referrals.

Occupation: Real Estate Agent/ Cafe Owner
    Industry: Real Estate and Hostpitality
    Location: Melbourne Western Suburbs

    • How do you do both?

      • +1

I have cafe for about 3yrs and doing pretty alright, It's in middle of Factories and We only get tradies on Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner times and few far in between. I spent 2yrs with 2 Kitchen staff, 2 Barista and a Manager. I was there sitting all day and me being there didn't make any difference to how much the sales were as were barely get that busy that two people can't handle it.

So I had free time on hand and background in Sales, I decided to jump to a Real Estate agency, where I knew the director personally and been more than a yearr since and I make more money by selling houses then I did through cafe.

So currently the cafe is managed by the manager who obviously got a raise. Everyday I get up at 4:30Am to drop off supplies to the cafe(Except Sat and Sun) and then gym and then to Work.

My day starts at 4:30AM and Usually finish at 6:30PM and then by 8PM i'm in bed sleeping. Weekends I only do Saturday Opens and Sundays are off and Spend time with my girlfriend.

And most of my teachers used to play games during class.

I guess that explains how you turned out.

lol is teaching really that hard?

Depends how passionate you are about changing and inspiring someone's life. The amount of care gone into ensuring a student learns what they need to shows in both the enthusiasm and results.

I've had my fair share of crappy and extraordinary lecturers at both high school and uni. There's even a facebook page dedicated to a great math teacher.

        • -6

You went to Uni? That's a first I'm hearing of this.

And my question was genuine, its hard to imagine seeing a teacher work 16 hour days.

        • +4

          @GameChanger:

I don't really feel the need to plaster that over the forums.

          And my question was genuine

Hardly believably, have a read of what you posted.

lol is teaching really that hard?

"lol" really adds a touch of genuineness to it..

its hard to imagine seeing a teacher work 16 hour days.

Not sure if you've been to uni but you can't judge a uni course by contact hours required. I'd imagine it's the same with teachers, you need to prepare lessons unless you've been teaching the same course that doesn't change its curriculum. It's easy to be an average/aiming-for passes in life in whatever you do, whether it be a teacher, or a student, or any occupation really, but it takes a lot of work if you want to be great at what you do.

        • -4

@cwongtech: yes because I find it hard to believe teaching is that hard. Work in investment banking or hell even an accountant and you find it harder than teaching.

Teachers like to complain big time, sorry your curriculum is handed to you and there is ample sources of information. Furthermore subject changes are minor every year.

Where have I judged a Uni course by hours required? For someone who attended Uni, surely making assumptions is big no?

        • @GameChanger:

yes because I find it hard to believe teaching is that hard. Work in investment banking or hell even an accountant and you find it harder than teaching.

I see. Are you in IB or an accountant? B Comm (Acct/Fin)?

Teachers like to complain big time, sorry your curriculum is handed to you and there is ample sources of information. Furthermore subject changes are minor every year.

You don't have to have an education degree to teach, just like you don't need to be enrolled in an educational institution to learn. I've just had contact as a student with both terrible and great teachers/tutors/lectures.

Where have I judged a Uni course by hours required? For someone who attended Uni, surely making assumptions is big no?

You implied hours are indicative of the difficulty associated with the job in response to this:

Love the job, the hours take a toll though and social life can go down the drain pretty quickly! - Crouchie

Wow, this really supports your genuine question..

lol is teaching really that hard?

I'm taught to make reasonable assumptions, acknowledge them and move on, and obtain a solution based on the information presented to me.
Since you seem to imply that you're from an IB/Accountant background, you would make assumptions towards risk factors before further research to validate your assumptions? Or do you not make any assumptions at all?

Seems like your other posts you make pretty bold assumptions against "well-known" users without critically analyzing why other posts with fewer votes may appear to not be as popular, without realizing other contributing factors of a post's positive-vote-potential do not only constitute of the username. Hope you don't do this if you're an IB/Accountant, only looking at the book values and indicative ratios.
