Oh bother. Posted the deal for the Shield with 2 controllers the other day, which I went for despite wanting the remote because I was impatient, and here we are, Shield TV + Remote bundle is down to $199.99USD again (deal with the bonus controller is now expired).

Not the lowest (lowest was $149.99USD for one day on Black Friday last year), but is a solid deal for those looking for one now. Basically free remote.

Quick description from the last post:
Considered the best Kodi box you can get (depending on your wants, it is the most powerful).

4K Netflix (only box that can), HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2. Gamestream from your gaming PC with a compatible Nvidia gfx card. (1080p60 over gigabit ethernet).

Edit: Some quick points. PSU is 110/240V, only need an adaptor, not a stepdown converter. Don't use Amazon currency exchange (charge in USD) as it is pretty bad value.

Edit 2: As Snuke has pointed out, a Flirc makes a great addition, able to be programmed with any IR remote. At the moment it is going for regular pricing though, and it doesn't seem to ship from the same place at the Shield as combined shipping is the same as it would be ordering separately.

Edit 3: An upcoming update is set to give this HDR, 4K60p, HDR Gamestream, and Android N (next update for Android TV).

You may not be able to run 4K contents or certain codecs with old laptops though.

    • maybe with an old alienware, but does your old lappy run Fallout 4…. well does it?

      • Mine did, my old lappy had a GTX970 :)

As per your last post, if you plan on using a Harmony IR universal remote or similar, with Kodi (SPMC) buy a Flirc at the same to get full control. The standard remote is very limited in the buttons it has, and while HDMI CEC is also possible, a Harmony with Hub, or IR version with Flirc will give bet results.

As much as I love the Shield at the current exchange rate it's not really that great an option. For an extra ~$80 you can pick up an Xbox One / PS4 with a couple of games which will probably prove to have better content and support down the line. Yes Nvidia can do 4K Netflix and sideload a heap of apps but for the price it's hard to recommend.

Funny I sold PS3 and bought my Shield.
Best decision I have made. I am not much into games btw :)

    • +2

I have two Shields & two PS4s. The PlayStations are solely for gaming as they are very average as a media player. The Shields are solely as media players with SPMC (Android specific version of Kodi) as the main use. I can't really comment on their gaming ability as I have barely used it; but it was decent at streaming Battlefield 3 from my PC to my TV.

So it all depends on what you want to get from the device.

      • Mmm I think you might of chosen the wrong product then as this is clearly designed to be a gaming device , hense the controllers and grafix hardware and being 3x the price of other Android streamers.

        • +2

I think if you were in the US then yes, it would be a gaming product as you would be able to utilise the Nvidia game streaming service. But in Australia, this device is one of, if not, the best streaming and media devices around.

Yes its expensive but it has two great things going for it, its supported and it works.

I tried 3 Android streaming boxes, $50 to $150 and they all had their issues with Network, Hardware or not supported by Netflix. Eventually decided to try the Shield and its been the best device by far. Easy to use and didn't have to teach the better half how to navigate around which I had to do with the other devices.

        • +1

You see the name of the device, “TV”, it is designed as a gaming console and media player, hence the TV part. Originally it was called Nvidia Shield Console, but they changed that last part to TV to reflect its media abilities.
Have you used or seen the real world abilities of the other Android streamers? I have a Nexus Player, falls short of my needs, all other non-Android TV Android boxes are not capable of HD Netflix, so that is an immediate pass. After having a great but show WD TV, a fast but short on capabilities Nexus Player and several other media players, nothing comes close to the Shield. So no, I did get the correct device, I have yet to see anything can all this can do for anything close to this price.

    What is kodi?

  • Years ago I knew all the technology coming out and was up to date on everything. I don't even know what this product is and have never heard of it. I am now old and will be obsolete soon. At least I can tune a VCR, what? noone uses those anymore?

    • +12

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you…

Anyway, about my washtub. I'd just used it that morning to wash my turkey, which in those days was known as a walking-bird. We'd always have walking-bird on Thanksgiving, with all the trimmings: cranberries, injun eyes, yams stuffed with gunpowder. Then we'd all watch football, which in those days was called baseball…

    • It is like a fancy Chromecast with a control pad, built stronger and sexier for gaming. Plus a remote.

  • +1

Not sure where you got the idea this is the only device that can do 4k Netflix.

    • +1

OP said it was the only box that can do netflix 4K - think they meant the only media player/box. My understanding is that this might be true - as it is the only box you can buy in australia that does 4K netflix.

Can you buy a roku 4 or amazon fire tv and get UHD in austraila? Surely you could

The following devices support Ultra HD streaming when paired with an Ultra HD TV via HDMI Port 1:

        • Nvidia Shield
        • Roku 4
        • TiVo Bolt
        • Amazon Fire TV (New Version)
        • British Telecom - BT DTRT-4000
        • Air 7410X (Waoo! in Denmark)
        • Sagem 4K (Totalplay in Mexico)
        • Dish Hopper 3

        More devices coming soon!

      • Thank you, there at least 3 there I would trust to buy.

  • It looks expensive but that's because it IS a gaming console, able to play all the big non-exclusive third party titles released for PS4 and Xbone. It plays games by itself, you don't HAVE to stream it. (I don't know about prices though). Also this looks to be the 16GB model, a bit of a stretch to fit even one game in that amount of disk space.

    • wait, what - how can I play xbone and ps4 games with this - I NEED Red Dead back in my life!

    • +1

      It plays games by itself

      Doesn't sound like much fun!

    • What big games are those? So far I'm seeing mostly old school emulztion games ,10 year old PC game conversions and mobile phone games ?

  • Does anyone use this for streaming games ? I have a steamlink which is a POS and I've tried a seperate PC with steam stream and found both to have constant issues, dcs and compatibility bugs all the time.

Wouldn't get it for game streaming.. lot of complaints:

      https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/159/shield-android-…

Native games are ok (but a bit limited) - others you have to sideload (e.g. emulators). Wouldn't get it as a game console either.

Netflix is good but Presto, Foxtel Go, Stan are not installable. Can stream to it thru chrome tho.

Very good kodi box - esp for playing H265 stuff from NAS. Can access the FTA catchup services with kodi plugins too. With a HD homerun you could have everything running thru the shield.

No regrets with my purchase - it does a good job of replacing the HTPC.

      • thanks for the deets.

      • Thanks mate !

  • Great device, but at that price i think you would be a little better off with a PS4 or XBOX One.

Given that the conversation is regarding a device that is classified as a console it probably appropriate to compare to the current batch of devices in the same classification.

        • Twas jk, it has always been just a jk. Cheer up. I would use it for streaming pc tho.

  • Is this one of those cool devices that you don't actually use for gaming, or are people firing this thing up?

  • +4

I own one. The best media box on the market in my opinion. The interface is super responsive and the wireless AC gets a solid connection in my house unlike other devices. Highly recommend.

  • From my experience, the device is expensive but the best media and streaming device that I have owned and used. Better half and kids all give it thumbs up too.

  • +1

I have a sony 4k tv and use kodi app as my media player. It works fine most of the time with 1080p. Any advantage in getting the shield for kodi? I don't have Netflix and only game on a pc.

    • Yes, this device would stream at native 4k. So if you start getting 4k content you can watch at native res, not upscaled.

    • How does the Kodi app on the Sony Android TV OS fare with fast forwarding, rewinding & scene skipping on streamed content via Exodus or Velocity? Does it work well or do you get alot of playback issues?

      • I don't stream. I have a slowish internet connection and a nice new uhd tv, so they are incompatible with each other for streaming. I have HQ files (1080p, bluray rip etc) on a nas connected via wired gb lan. Even then some ff/rw/scene skipping doesn't work so well.

Kodi works pretty well, I watched a 2k vid file (45 min, 2gb) tv show last night on the kodi app and it played perfectly well. But fast forwarding can cause issues sometimes as there is limited buffer available. I have changed the buffer size in kodi to help but even then input buffer is limited to about 100mb.

I watch shows that have no ads, in hi quality, so I start the show and settle in. At most I pause or rewind 20s to rewatch something.

        • Instead of RW or FF, how is skipping performing for you? I rarely RW or FF (NAS to Shield with SPMC (Android specific Kodi) I always skip, I have a skip back set to 10sec, 30 sec, 3mins with the direction pad, and a hard 10min to skip button. I also have it set to skip back 10 seconds automatically if stopped or paused for a specified time, this is through the add on XBMC Unpause Jumback.

  • Been wanting to replace my Boxee Box for streaming Kodi for a while. Been keeping tabs on the Shield TV since the start of the year. This is def the best price for ages. Bit the bullet & ordered one! Thanks for the link OP! Now just hoping Amazon ships my package in a timely matter! Cheers

  • Will this play vainglory?

    • Play Store says I can't send it to download to Shield.
Not sure if it works via sideloading.
