  • Just paid $154.75USD inc freight to NSW.

These things are awesome, big, super fast and very light.

Ever tried opening up an SSD? The inside is damn small, you'll wonder why such big case.

      • +1

The device is small…I'm guessing he means the capacity.

        • No, he means the physical case. an msata drive (smallest form factor) isn't much larger than a postage stamp or two. Yet the case on these, small compared to traditional hdds is still freaking huge compared to the internals, which I can't imagine more than a msata sized drive (wouldn't need the msata io part tho) and a USB controller.

Maybe they need the empty space for heat dissipation? I can't see how increasing their size intentionally could make them more marketable.

    • Aren't these things like a credit card?

  • 500 GB for a "personal portfolio"? What are you carrying in that, your birth video through to graduation with all your wedding and holiday media thrown in?

    • +3

I'd imagine, considering the audience of the retailer, this is to carry a portfolio of previous photo and video work to show prospective clients. USB3.0 would remove the IO bottleneck that usually using an external hdd/pen drive would see.

      • Good point - I was thinking of a business porfolio, and had forgotten that common usage. A USB stick would be a bit more convenient, and still have a faster data transfer than needed by the display. Then again, it's the size of a credit card and thickness of a CD case and looks good. Most around this size and price are hybrids.

  • Essentially this is just an msata 850 evo in an external enclosure

Still a very good price though when compared to the msata form factor of the 850 evo, as well it seems like it has a good quality on-board sata to usb bridge and comes with encryption software out of the box.

  • The speed is very fast with usb3.0 cable according to the review link post above. Is that because of the cable or the chips?

    • The Usb to sata bridge actually reduces the speed somewhat compared to directly connection through SATA-3 the memory modules are the same as the 850 evo and can actually do around 520/500 MB/s over sata. However in this case it is held back slightly by Usb 3.0 this is statement is direct from the review "performs very well even when held back by the USB 3.0 link, which is more of a bottleneck when compared to SATA"

Also here is a pic of the actual size of the device

    Johnny Mnemonic

  • Got one for $180ish (price beat @ OW) during Bing Lee's last 20% off eBay sale. Super handy for backing up RAW files while I'm on-the-go, as i can't be bothered to upgrade my 128gb MacBook Air storage.
