By far the easiest and reaonably stable Smarthome system to get going with… Not perfect, but best bang for buck!

  • Been looking at home automation a lot recently. Has anyone here used this and the UZB zwave stick to give their opinions?

Anyone prefer using the vera stuff versus openHAB or HomeAssistant or similar.

Also from what I read, UI7 sucks?

    • The gist I get is, use software if you want the ability to do anything, but be prepared to do a lot of programming/scripting.

Or use a physical hub with vendor firmware, instead of software, if you want simpler setup with less scripting, but there are more limitations on what you can do. And some scripting is still possible.

I would liken it to the decision between playing Bluray movies off a laptop/PC in your lounge, vs buying a Bluray player.

Vera, like Samsung SmartThings (they have not yet released an Australian frequency version) has a massive global support community and active manufacturer support/updates.

With both software or hardware/firmware solutions, if you want to do something, you can Google it, and often someone else has already asked, and a clever person has posted an answer/procedure on how to do it.

I dont have the UZB stick - I bought the Aeon Labs version instead (they both seem popular). I have played around in a couple of different software solutions, but have not yet had the time to get a working solution set up, and prefer not to have to run a computer 24x7 either.

      • That sounds fair enough. I'm just about to have a go with www.mynodes.net. Looks pretty flexible and I love the idea of building my own sensors. Not really plug and play like the Vera though.

        • You need to go deeper.

These DIY sensors… They are MySensors.org
They are compatible with a lot of systems including Vera and OpenHAB

        Riiiiiight.
I see that manufacturer support - SmartThings is still not available.
        Vera…

Before today the model to go in Australia was Vera3. Which not even listed on their website. Because it's old.
Now while people preordering VeraPlus… We can finally enjoy old Vera Edge. :)

I have Vera3. It does not do what I want it to do.

Yes, I was expecting it to be like Bluray player. It turned out to be VHS. :)
Next thing I am going to try is to play Bluray with computer. I mean, I am going to try OpenHAB.

    • I tried Vera3.
      Didn't like it.
Never saw UI5. But UI7 didn't impress me at all.
      Going to try OpenHAB.

      • Yeah I'm looking at the same, though leaning towards either HomeAssistant or HomeSeer instead of OpenHAB. What controller will you use? I see from another comment you have the Vera3 - are you going to use that or get something else?

        • OpenHAB won't run on Vera.
I am going to try it with RaspberryPi 3 and Aeon USB Z-Wave stick.
Some people are saying RPi is not reliable enough "for production" use.
Should be good enough to try.

        • @SickDmith: Yeah I've read the same, with the 2 biggest complaints being writes to the microSD card and slow startup times. Just write to a disk solves the first and once it's mostly setup there shouldn't be as much need to reboot. I'l be starting with the raspberry pi3 myself, then take it from there.

I get that openhab does run on the vera, but can you still connect the vera to your rpi3 so that openhab can talk to your zwave devices yeah?

  • Apparently someone on Whirlpool got it from RKM for 10% less on $289 with free shipping http://whrl.pl/ReCMdf to price match this deal.

    • Yep, saw that. Not sure if they will do for everyone tho - that person had bought a lot of stuff from them. They might do.

But price match deals are not allowed to be posted here.
And the 10% off store wide is a good deal - some of their Zwave sensors etc are cheaper than the other ~6 stores I checked and the 10% off makes them even cheaper.

Maybe I should not have made the VeraEdge the focus of this deal.. but I knew from forums etc that quite a few people have been eagerly awaiting its release (the AU model).

If an AU version of SmartThings was available, Id go with that, but Vera seems to be the 2nd most popular appliance.

      • No worries mate. I have Vera too and don't like it too much. Waiting for something better.

  • wrong thread. sorry
