  • Would you do a deal on the Asus DSL modems?

    How 'bout the RT-AC68U?

    • +1

I'd be keen to see a deal on that router too.

Passwords are emailed in plain text when signing up… naughty naughty!!

  • I'm just using the wireless cable modem that optus gave me when i signed up. For normal downloading (legal torrents only, of course) , netflix and Internet use (no gaming), is there anything to be gained by using a "better" modem /router?

Happy to hear from any experts/14 yr olds who can advise me!

      Better modem =
More range- probably not useful if you have a fixed PC and it's already doing well in terms of signal
More bandwidth- means more devices at one time can use the net. It is very unlikely that one PC will max out bandwidth tho. Its more likely your net is slower.
More control- give priority to different devices in terms of bandwidth

Tbh, not much to be gained unless you are running a network.

    • Newer router may have

      1) more wireless bandwidth, therefore better for streaming, even with one PC
      2) updated security protocols, features etc
      3) might have more throughput overall. My old Optus device had 30/1 speed limit which isn't good when you are paying for 100/2
      4) stronger/better signal for wireless, therefore better throughput

In the case of ISP provided equipment it is usually very low specs and can be overloaded by lots of simultaneous connections at once so with many devices hitting it or torrents with lots of peers (if you have set your client to connect to lots) it can make the connection artificially slower or drop entirely.

These higher end ones will support more simultaneous wifi connections at once (and in this case AC speed) as well as handling more connections/bandwidth usage overall.

For the Australian market it's mostly not needed these days though as cheap routers are more powerful than they used to be and our internet is worse than ever with more and more people moving into the same areas and signing up to Netflix and other bandwidth hungry applications overloading the local exchanges.

    • DSL-AC68U is a DSL modem/router. Won't work if you're on cable.

  • Just bought myself a 7 month old DSL-68U and love it. Works very well. Also saved myself about $90 based on price listed here. Had been waiting for a sale, but I couldn't wait any longer.

    • Not that this is a good price. Almost every result on shopbot is much cheaper. E.g. Wireless1 $245 even after a massive $21 shipping: http://www.warehouse1.com.au/epages/shop.mobile/?ObjectPath=…

      • The link you've given is for a a different product, the RT-68U which is a only router (no modem). Cheapest I can see for the DSL-68U on Statice is about $300

        • My bad!

  • edit: nope NetPlus is not one of the participating retailers

These routers are eligible for a $20 cashback (RT-AC88U & RT-AC5300 includes a ROG Sica gaming mouse as well as the cashback)
