Wow this is really cheap I paid alot more just 2 weeks ago.

  • I wonder the cost to upgrade, I have 3 months left

    • +2

They usually waive that 3 months for you. Actually, 4~5 years ago, they could waive 9 months if you negotiate hard enough with an operator over the phone.

      • -1

what about if im 10 months into my plan…..
        Legit question.

    • yeah u should be able to upgrade with no cost, if not now then very soon. Just check with them. Sooner you upgrade the more money u save :D

  • +1

Do you know if we can upgrade and take advantage of this offer?

Edit: I don't like phones with built in battery, especially this one with all the whistles and bells, big screen and Octa-core, the 3,000Mh battery is not enough for one day.
I already made the big mistake with the LG G3 which got a 3,000Mh battery and it's not enough, fortunately it's removable so I bought a bigger one.

    • -2

Great story, thanks for the insight.

    • +1

i agree regarding removable battery being awesome and flexible but s7 vs g3 isn't a fair comparison. g3 has a bigger screen with that 3000 batt, it was an lcd and one of the first with 2k res (s7 has an amoled screen and isn't a 1st year effort for them), s7 has a newer exynos processor and is regarded as very efficient compared to even this years Qualcomm offerings.

edit: and they make battery cases for these phones too. But they work neater with removable battery phones imo

    • +1

you can always use a powerbank to top up your phone battery. the pros of built in batteries outweigh its negatives imo. i.e better IP rating, larger battery. and I'd say yes I don't see why they wouldn't allow this offer to returning customers.

    • I've used this phone for a month. The battery actually lasts (btw it's 3600 mAh, not 3000 mAh).

To me, removable battery isn't much of an issue. The only thing I was concerned was that was no way of hard resetting the phone if it freezes up. Fortunately, holding the down volume key and home button for 7 seconds does the trick. Some people would buy an extra battery and interchange during the day which I would find a bigger hassle. A battery bank or having an extra charging cable at work would prevent any low battery scenarios.

      • +2

How long would the built in battery last, 2 years, maybe 3, in the mean time its capacity will degrade day by day then you throw away your beautiful deal because it doesn't turn on anymore.
Anyway, this is my feeling about built in batteries, other people will feel more comfortable by carrying power banks.

PS: on the Vodafone web site they say that the battery is 3,oooMh.

        • How often does one change phones? If it's less than 2-3 years you quoted, then does the battery matter?

Better charging practices are more important IMO ie. lower current (like through the computer instead of directly through the power point).

        • +1

I never understood the sentiments about battery degrading and built in battery causing battery to be completely non-replacable.
I know that it's a bigger hassle and it costs more but you can take it to or send it to service center and get it replaced, can't you?

        • @Oversimplified: Good point there. You could probably get the battery replaced just before Samsung's 2 year period warranty expires. This way, the battery is at its maximum rated capacity again and the battery life is prolonged for another 2-3 years (I'm only saying 2-3 years because that's what dealhunt is quoting).

      • +2

Edge is 3600 mah, normal s7 is smaller and has 3000 mah.

      • Oops, didn't realise this was the standard version and not the Edge.

  • +1

thing's getting cheaper, but I'm still waiting for S7 Edge deal. When will it down to 60-70 range? (Virgin is offering $65 now but the plan is shitty) :D

  • +1

Good deal. I reckon comparable plans are about $40 / mth, so $30 / mth for the handset ain't too shabby - especially good if you love your data.

  • +6

For those of you that call overseas, note that the $70 plan does not include any international minutes.

    • that is the reason I am thinking switching to Virgin Mobile.
Currently on $70 Red plan with Vodafone which ends in 3 months.

  • I just got the S7 Edge on a $80 plan + 13 for Handset.. And they gave me 9 Gb of data and 300 mins of international credits..

    • read fine print, VF cut the list of countries and those free 300min is only for calls to those countries.

    • +3

At launch I got the s7 edge on $130 plan for $80 a month + 0 for handset.

      #OZBRAGGIN
  • can someone explain the difference between 2 plans of equal cost but different handset repayments?
ie. $70= $50 plan and $20 phone repayment vs $70 plan and $0 phone repayment

    • +2

While the overall cost is the same, the plan you get differs on price.

Without knowing the specifics, I'm fairly sure that the $50 plan has less inclusions (data etc) than the $70 plan.

Phone repayment is just an extra fee to cover the cost of the device - obviously the lower it is, the better. On higher value plans it might be $0, so it makes sense to choose the $70 plan + $0 phone over the $50 plan and $20 phone.

  • +1

or go for Aldi, Vaya and pay the phone outright and save money

    • +1

My thoughts exactly. $70 plan for 24 months is quite a bit.

Find Optus 10G sim only deal for $40 and suddenly you got $720 budget for a phone compared to this deal. Find a better deal and the phone budget goes up :P

      • $720 wouldn't get you a new Galaxy S7 though, unless you go into 2nd hand.

        • $1680 over 24 months is alot

$432 for Vaya $18 a month plan over 24 months which ability to cancel anytime, and that give you $1248 to spend on a handset

        • +1

@asa79: Does that get you the similar amount of data, phone call time etc etc?

Don't get me wrong, I kinda dislike the idea of plans (since you end up paying more for less because they usually introduce better plans every year), that said 7GB of data is reasonable enough for $30~40 at current stage at least.

Since Galaxy S7 was $910 from last eBay 20% promotion, 24 months, you get $32~33 per month.

Of course, if you need less data, you get the one with less data and save money. That said, the option I was commenting on wasn't better in every sense than the deal posted above. You get more data, but at the same time, you do need to pay bit more for the handset or pay bit more every month.

        • The price of a brand new unopened galaxy s7 is around $800-$850 on gumtree, potentially lower as you can always haggle. The plan is actually pretty good in value (similar amount of money compared to doing it the outright way with the same amount of data and calls).
Nothing beats my $36 10GB unlimited calls though, I guess in my case outright is still the way to go.

        • @clse945111: I kinda like outright more too, since you get better plans/events every year (currently on $40 prepaid plan that gives me unlimited calls to my home country).

That said, I kinda think you can't compare these to second hand since it's brand new with VR headset which you probably can sell for around $100ish.

        • -2

@Oversimplified: I have 1.5GB and $650 worth of calls and struggle to go over that, unless your using your mobile as hotspot instead of local adsl/cable/nbn then 7GB is a bit overkill

        • +2

@asa79: That really depends on your usage, doesn't it? 7GB can go down fairly easily if you stream music, watch videos on data etc. At least, some people would need more than 1.5GB.

As I said before, of course, if you need less data, you get the one with less data and save money. That said, can you say that $18 gets you the same product as the post? You get less data and you get less phone call credit, so you pay less for less.

Can't seem to find the $0 option for the headset. All I see is $70 + $7, anyone have the link to the $0 option?

    Cheers

  • Don't forget you can also claim a free VR Headset (RRP arond $150): http://www.samsung.com/au/gear-vr-offer/

    • +1

I haven't set my hands on a Samsung VR, but $150 feels high.

I tried out generic $20-40 VR headsets and they feel pretty good. Is there anything extra that the Samsung one does to justify the price?

But to get it free is absolutely fantastic.

      • $150 is the RRP, in reality you can get this for around $100 in eBay or GumTree. I have not compare them side by side but I felt this looks better and thinner compared to the generic one like VR box or Shinecon.

      • Gear VR much superior to the generic ones, better immersion and lense, complements Samsung phone's offering which is powered by Occulus. A little pricey for something that's quite gimmicky and short-term for most but you're right, getting it free is fantastic. FYI i've got generic VR's and the Gear VR

Thanks for the deal post, I signed up! I called up Vodafone, got them to waive the two months remaining on my contract and negotiated a $5/month discount! Phone should arrive on Tuesday. Been with Vodafone since 2003, through the highs and lows. Very happy with the coverage and the customer service levels I've been receiving over the last few years.

    • Thanks! I did the same, ended up with $65pm with $0 phone. Vodafone personal CS is not bad. Avoid sign up with their business though, it is more pricier and the CS is not as good (especially if you are just a sole trader or business with less than 10 staff).

      • How do you get the discount? any special number to call? I tried but no luck!

        • You will have to be with Vodafone for long time I guess.. It's called long time customer discount.. Also I was speaking with customer resolution centre in AU instead of their call centre..

  • +1

Thanks OP - gave me good ammo to use in Telstra Live Chat:

    Scored:
    * $74 per month on Medium plan for S7 (normally $84)
    * Deducted remaining 2 months of contract
    * $50 credit towards remaining $67 handset payments.
    Total saving: $352

I very nearly chose Vodafone $70pm for the extra data, but wasn't sure if coverage in Tassie is good enough yet. They have put in a heap more 4g towers this year though. Maybe next contract.

    • can you tell me what is in the medium plan?

      • +1
        • Is coverage the only reason you choose to pay $4 more a month, for 4.5gb less data and a capped call amount vs unlimited txt/calls?

        • +1

          @Chivalry:
Yeah pretty much. I hardly make calls or txt, and 2.5gb is about right for me. Waiving the remainder of my contract/handset effectively paid the $4 per month difference.
I'll put wifey on Vodafone to compare coverage and maybe switch next contract.
The plan is definitely great value.

  • I signed up and received a $3 p/m recurring credit so comes out at $67 p/m. Been with Voda for 2 years.

Can't dispute the value - if selling the VR gear the monthly plan value comes out around $25 p/m (based on $900 outright and $100 for gear). Hard pressed to find any plan that gives 7Gb with unlimited calls/text for that rate.

  • How do you get the discount? any special number to call? I tried but no luck!
