Lots of uses for Lack tables from Server Racks to Hifi Racks like this: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/2b/d7/b3/2bd7b30c7…

Here's one I built a few years ago: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?attachments/lack-… Can be done in a day but for those wanting to use power tools then a seemingly simple project such as this may not be for you. Hand tools are advisable due to the very thin & very fragile finish of the lack legs. A bit of patience along with a basic $5-$10 saw and a Mitre Box from Bunnings will result in a much cleaner finished product compared to if you used Power Tools… unless you've got high-end Power Tools at the ready but of course if you had decent Power Tools and a kitted out Workshop then you probably wouldn't be wanting to hack IKEA stuff anyway ;)

      • seeing that makes me want a bunch of these, except stack em for consoles

The Lack Rack was good but the thick shelves really do add up and make for a much taller rack than you may expect. They're also quite large at 550mm square (from memory) so not good for anyone short on space. This is my latest IKEA Hack Rack made from IVAR components and stained with three coats of black IKEA stain: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/67715/39613/10._finish… That vintage hifi gear weighs a ton but the IVAR handles it no problem. Fully adjustable too so when plans change (as they already have since that pic) I can very easily adjust the shelves to suit. Also the perfect fit for professional 19" Rack gear (refer to the red 1RU Speaker Selector and the silver 1RU & 3RU Perreaux components). Total cost including both side frames, 7 x shelves & stain was under $120.

        • Here you go, I did up a pictorial step-by-step guide for some mates while I was doing mine and just found it so thought I'd share it: https://goo.gl/photos/D3BVjqFSt5pcefQf9 Best way to view is to click on the first pic to enlarge it then click on the white 'i' (info) icon up the top-right of the screen to see a brief description on each slide then just go through them one at a time.

There are many ways to perform this hack but I found this process to work well for me. If you discover a better, easy, quicker way to do it then good for you but consider sharing your ideas with others here who may benefit from them. Just keep in mind that some of my mates decided to 'man-up' and use their power tools but due to the fragile nature of the finish they continually stuffed their legs up and ended up using hand tools in the end anyway ;) Hope this is helpful to some. Good luck!

          @SteveAndBelle: WOAH, thanks

  • How will this fare as a bedside table in the spare room?

    • +1

I use a Lack as a bedside table in my main room.

      • +11

Better a Lack next to the bed than a Lack in the bed

        • +1

          Sir Lacklength approved.

    • +26

i would image it looks like a small white table next to your bed

    • +4

Fine… just don't get it wet (or feed after midnight).

Seriously though, these don't fare very well at all with any kind of moisture. Spill a drink or whatever and it may be OK for a while but it'll start dissolving, swelling and delaminating within a few weeks after. Even exposure to high humidity wrecks these so be careful. Still, for $3 they're very good value.

      • +4

It's $2.99. who cares if it delaminates.

        • +2

Sad but true. No real reason to worry about these ending up in landfill as apart from the finish the bulk of them will be gone within a few months anyway. Now if they could just finish them off with something just as 'weak' we'd have the perfect furniture building material!

        • +1

@SteveAndBelle: Yes yes i was just thinking about the sustainability issue too. but i suspect most ppl who buy a $2.99 coffee table really dont have plans to keep it for very long.

        • @dy4me: Wonder if anyone's done a study on the volume of IKEA stuff found in kerbside collection now versus 10-20 years ago. Interesting study as the IKEA stuff probably isn't as bad as we think once crushed up in landfill as it would break down a lot faster & easier than the old 'proper' furniture people used to chuck out. God knows what would leach out of it though, eek!

    • +4

I've had one as a dining table/craft table for my toddler for months. As long as you wipe up any spills within a few hours they are fine. Ours still looks exactly the same as when we purchased it :)

    • Obviously nowhere near as cheap but we used two Lack Wall Shelves as a floating bed side table.

  • Instore only & no Ikea in Newy, dammit…this would have been perfect for a little printer stacking I need to do! :/

  • So tempted to get some and save them for when I have time to do some of these hacks…and you can't forget this hack

    http://www.ikeahackers.net/2013/01/lack-arcade-coffee-table.…

I am sure you could do something similar with just the cheap LACK

    • Yeah, personally I think the table is a bit low though.

      https://au.pinterest.com/pin/109845678390304197/?from_naviga…

      • I knew I had seen this before. I suspect they intend for the player to sit on the floor. Shame the legs on the table are a little short, and hollow, otherwise you could even engineer in a slope on the table.

  • +1

max 2 per customer (it is stated on their front page)

    • +3

Just keep going in and use self checkout.

      • +9

Having to walk through the entire store again would kill this for me.

        • +2

Many, if not all, have shortcuts to skip sections. The one I go to in Tempe NSW I can get through in 2-3 minutes now that I know where those are. They certainly don't advertise them though so it takes some exploring to find them.

        • +1

The lack tables are located in the bulky goods section towards the checkouts.

If you enter the store at the ground floor you can pretty much head straight through to the bulky goods section.

        • @EBC: The shortcuts are clearly marked at Rhodes.

        • No need just go in at checkout entrance all you need to do. these specials are usually just before the checkout registers. At least at Rhodes NSW. Few times all the specials are there, I suggest you walk in from the exit take the stuff and walk out. Do not bother going in the maze. They cannot refuse your entry just say what you wanted is just there on pallets

  • +8

they just want you to come in the store looking for this chair and get lost in the maze..

  • +1

Is this deal only for the white version or all colours?

  • +3

I dont find this deal lacking.

    • I find your lack of deal disturbing.

  • +2

i think I'll be lacking an expensive bed side table after this

  • +1

Lack side table for $3 or plate of 10 swedish meatballs with chips, gravy and jam for $4?

I know which one I would rather get.

    • +2

The meatballs, because the other one is lacking any good nutritional value.

      • Shouldn't that be the other way around? Or maybe that's what you meant to say :p

        • +3

I was meant to say that. I really don't want to eat wood. :)

        • @silverrat23: But isn't it actually just fancy cardboard, not wood?

      • IKEA meatballs always give me the mad squirts for days. Don't know why!

    • the automatic soft serve machine, pure awesomeness.

  • Can this one be used outdoor?

    • +1

Yes but don't expect it to last very long.

    • nope, saw one left outside and the veneer just peeled right off.
these things are just cheap, hollow, pieces of (useful when used properly) crap.

the inside is just like those hollow core doors similar to a honey bees hive.

  • wowee this is unreal

    IKEA Lack : Audiophile Rack
    http://www.ikeahackers.net/2011/12/ikea-lack-audiophile-rack…

    • +4

Yes but please note that the Lack legs are now very different compared to those 5+ years ago. They're now hollow just with a particle 'plug' in each end so the double-ended screw can bite into something. If you cut a Lack leg nowadays you'll then need to cut up pieces of 42mm square pine and glue them in so you can still screw the double-ended screws into something. This is the stuff I had to buy from Bunnings: http://www.bunnings.com.au/porta-42-x-42mm-2-4m-standard-and… (cheaper in shorter lengths of course)

      • +1

no wonder why these are so cheap

        • +5

Still a bargain but yes the hollow legs make it difficult for hacking these days. Not impossible though as this is the rack I made a few years ago from Lack tables with hollow legs: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/67715/39611/lack_rack.… Another great benefit of using Lack tales for this is that it allows you to change shelf colours very easily. I swapped the glossy Red top out for a simple Black about a year later and cut the legs down a bit too to fit into a different space. All very cheap & easy but I've now given that to a friend and moved onto another IKEA Hack for my gear.

    This thread is seriously lacking

  • always the eastern states, never WA..

  • +1

Get in on Friday or early Saturday for these. I would not expect there to be much stock left on Sunday

  • These are basically cardboard, but painted, right?

    • +2

      No.

      Product description
Table top: Particleboard, Fibreboard, ABS plastic, Foil
      Filling material: Paper
      Leg: Particleboard, Fibreboard, Foil

      • +1

So paper, not even cardboard and covered with a thin piece of particleboard, fibreboard and layer of plastic rather than just painted? Still, if they'll do the job, who cares what they're made of for $3?

        • +7

If you're ever playing WWE and you are in need of some furniture and table legs to smash your opponents head in with, these would make a pretty good deal.

  • It shows $7.99 for me. Maybe a code or selected stores?

    • +6

Could it be because the 3 Day Special starts from 27 May 2016?

    • Yes pretty cool hack but it is done from a Lack wall shelf ($15.99)

  • +1

Damn bought a couple LACK's at $5 still haven't used them.

  • +4

I like this thread not because of the deal itself, but the creative uses of the table it brings.

  • hmmm… thinking to build the Audiophille Rack. But this deal has limit of 2 per customer?
Any ways to get around this?

    • Bring a friend?

    • Buy two, go back in and buy another two. Repeat until you get as many as you need.

    • +2

      Pretend you have multiple personalities.

  • How's the stock levels in Tempe?

    • +1

Plenty, however they're going quick. Saw heaps of people taking two each and probably just because it's $3

  • +2

You can use these to make a standing desk:

    http://iamnotaprogrammer.com/Ikea-Standing-desk-for-22-dolla…

I've done this and worked on that setup for a while. It was actually pretty good.

  • Logan store has heaps, only in black or white though, no other colors that i could see.

  • Anyone know the stock levels in Richmond?

    • Lots of:)

  • Ummm this is random but….

I wanted to buy a soft serve in a cup. They refused to give me a coin token and the cups they have lying around for their coffees. No sale. How in the world am I going to lick a soft serve and drive? They also put the soft serve/hot dog kiosk at the end of the shop, and not at the entrance, leaving there little time to eat between the exit and the car park.

    • the soft serve machines only hold cones.
the entrance and exit are actually next to each other, so you could drop by the hot dogs before going up to the showrooms

      • Okay good suggestion, thanks. I will get a soft serve first as I am the slowest eater and hate to rush. I guess another solution was for him to give me a cup and cone so I can collapse it in.

        • No problem. Unfortunately you'll have to pay for the cup as well since it is mainly for soft drink which is located next to the soft serve machine

  • Plenty left at Springvale. Thanks op!

I'm going to chop some legs and stack a few like the 'audiphile rack' hack. But will use it like a shelf to hold random things at different levels. One level will be a charge station for all my devices. Another level for my bag. Etc, etc.

Gets lots of junk off the floor and makes my room nice and tidy!

  • Was still heaps at Logan when i went back last night for another 6 for hacks. (though as noted, only black or white)

  • The stacks of black lack near the registers at springvale has been sold, need to go into the aisle to get some if you want.

    Lots of white remaining

    • Was really busy when I went a couple hours ago and it seemed every second person with a trolley had a couple of these in them!

  • +2

I drove 20km to buy this coffee table and ended up with a new leather sofa :-(

    • haha that $2.99 was a worthy lure by ikea! enjoy your couch!

  • Ikea Rhodes didn't have the 2 per customer limit today. Walked out with 5 of these alongwith other random stuff.

  • springvale totally out, checked just now

  • Any left at Richmond guys?

Sucks that their two location in Vic are further to the East, would be great if Ikea put a store in the West too.

  • Rhodes has run out of white, currently 2 pallet of black left

    • good thing I picked up 2 white the other day
