Remember this is actually an iPad 2 with a smaller screen attached. Meaning it's specs are now over 5 years old.

    • +3

      This means,slow than slower!

      • +11

Are you typing from one now?

      • +1

Can confirm. iOS 9 has made my iPad mini a pain to use. Once you're in the app (like youtube or netflix) it's not so bad, but the loading times are horrendously slow. It's faster to watch paint dry.

        • FWIW iOS 9.3.1 (up from 9.2) gave my 5S a huge speed improvement… it may help you?

        • +1

it's more painful when you're watching pron

        • What kind of paint… enamel or water based?

  • +4

    Still using 1st gen ipad mini 64GB was… $700+
little laggy at times but $150 for a cellular model. Why not?
    No LTE… only 3G i think

    • +1

Would love to see a video of scrolling on brisbanetimes.com.au on initial load. The JS on the site brings many tablets to their knees. It's my goto 'realworld' benchmark.

      • +13

it lags on my Cray 256 Googlateraflop super computer

    • +2

Im still using my first gen mini cellular. It has LTE. Still runs fast enough. Worth it for $150.

      • +1

But no retina, shudder. Dann I'm entitled

        • +1

Haha yeah but i have no need for watching anything on it. Purely for net emails etc.

    • Is that because LTE didn't even exist when this thing came out? :P

  • +2

Laggy?? Sometimes what you type into the address bar on Safari doesn't start populating for 5 or 6 seconds. Also, games continually crash.

    • +50

      Those are features.

      • AHahah,genius!

        • Everyone knows other companies did laggy first, Apple just released it as if they came up with the idea of slow tablets

  • +3

I have one of these. I use it for surfing the web, banking, ibooks, abc iview and a few things. Sure it's a bit laggy, but the only time I have a problem is on entering the passcode to unlock it. otherwise it's generally fine. for $150 I think it's a bargain.

    • +2

IMHO 16gb is way too small for an ipad, but for a $150, it's a steal

      • +1

that is the biggest issue - 16gb is really way too small nowadays.

        • But this is the iPad Mini

  • +1

For everyone, this was BigW Doncaster (Melb) it's mostly likely store specific.

    • Would be great if people could confirm, including the iPad mini 2 as well.

  • How would this go as a sat nav and for Apple music in car?

    • Cellular has GPS chipset

  • $150 that at least $100 too much

    • +11

This would piss all over that pendo crap from target, or anything Kmart has to offer

      • But cost 3 times more to piss on pendo.

        • hence why $100 too much

  • Store specific?

    • Yes I've just went to Bonnyrigg Plaza and there was none at all.

  • +1

I just migrated a relative's old iPad2 because it started losing support for a lot of basic apps like YouTube and I imagine it will only get worse despite the hardware being good.

In that way, they're certainly not as "durable" as PCs

    • +1

My PC doesn't support Windows 10.
      Ha - take that Microsoft!

      • damn how olds your pc? lolll i have it running on a ancient laptop at work for testing … hahaha

        • BIOS is dated 3/5/2004. I haven't embraced LCD yet.

        • +1

@muncan: hahahaha well done! … all they do through LCD screens is spy on you anyway!

        • @scud70: this is not true. However I do tape over the web cams on my laptop when it's sexy time

        • @supnigs: ………………………………………………………………………. oook

        • +3

          @supnigs:

What you do isn't sexy time, I've seen it.

        • @supnigs:

          Profile pic checks out.

        • @smpantsonfire: true, but I guess from your receiving end view it's a bit different from mine. I know you love it. Special Treat! I'm eating strawberries for lunch

    • +1

      Hahaha You update the iOS

    • Man that is crap. They just want you to upgrade to the new one. A 4 or 5 year old device becoming useless for basic tasks. I wonder how many end up in landfill? And I thought I read somewhere that a lot of the stuff ends up being recycled in China or India and the environmental pollution is dreadful. Not to mention the toxic chemicals and heavy metals that the children are exposed to.

  • +2

Not on sale at Auburn store

  • Mainly use my 1st gen ipad mini for streaming. Locally or services like netflix and catchup tv. Still works great.

  • -6

They most likely tried to sell this to China or India in bulks without success. Graysonline will say no straight away. Move the stocks to Master and write it off seems to be the only way out.

  • I had this and it's very laggy to use.

  • Its very laggy if u update, so i suggest not to update

    Very weak wifi range

  • +1

Just called big w wetherill park. They haven't stock the 3g for a couple years already. The 16gb wifi, they're selling for $344.

  • Nothing at Macquarie

  • +1

Still thinking my iPad Mini 2 was a steal at $200.

  • +7

While I like iPads if you only have $150 to spend I think you're much better off with an android tablet. There are lots of good value chinese options around that price range that would have 4x the ram, twice the storage and a much much faster processor/gpu. Original iPad mini is ancient now and with each new iOS release it will get slower and more things will crash / not be supported.

  • +1

I'm still using my original iPad to reply to this thread. Sometimes it's laggy, and it mis spells and all the ozbargain spelling nazi have a field day, but I'm still happy with what it is (6yr old tech) that still performs reliably and does the basics well. Yes it lags, and yes safari crashes on certain websites, but for some stuff, it works better than newer iPads.

    • What works better than the new ipads? Care to explain further?

      • +1

Some surfing experiences. Scrolling within a Small window imbedded in a site. Reading feature in safari is more stable in my old iPad. I'm not saying a lot of stuff is better, but just some small things.

        • Didn't know that. Thanks. Is it because yours is on the older IOS like 5 or older? I have 2 ipod touch 5, 1 on IOS 6 and the other on IOS 9. The one on IOS 6 is snappy compared with the one on IOS 9 that lags so badly I don't even want to use it for anything else other than as a MP3 player.

    • i use my original ipad for Clash Of Clans , chokes up a bit on large attacks but otherwise fine

  • None available at Warringah Mall NSW

  • +5

Amazing, as soon as it says iPad/iPhone the deal goes off. Doesn't matter if it is 10 years old hardware, main thing is that there is an apple on the box.

  • +2

    Much rather get Amazon Fire

    • +1

Ironically the $50 one would run better.

  • Just called doncaster n said dey r sold out dis morning n also said all stores r sold our..

  • +1

No deal at Big W Jesmond NSW

  • +2

    No deal MacArthur square.

This many upvotes and no one but the OP has one? No deal I say

  • I can confirm new update has slowed my iPad mini right down :( actually prefer to use my phone now as it's quicker even though had a cracked screen…
