cheers to the mod who made the formatting look better.. :)

Yeah, maybe have a look at how it was done for next time!
I took 1 look and went yeah, someone else's mess to fix!:P (thanks ham!)

  • do you get the free bt speakers with the server only deal? Also is the freight cost the same with the free speakers?

    • Free BT speaker is only with the bundle, freight is per the bundle with the speaker included :)

(we only have about 60 BT speakers, if we run out we will advise and offer something else.)

      • +1

Yep no probs… Thought i'd ask anyway :)

        • of course, it is the OZB way :)

  • +1

Lowest price I've ever seen on these. Great little machines.

  • So PayPal has surcharge or no surcharge?

Anyone know how this processor will go running FreeNAS? ZFS/encryption/plugins etc etc?

    • PayPal has a surcharge, im not brave enough to talk technical, but i think fellow ozbargainers have already done some of that for you - see here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/244057

    • Im running FreeNAS with ZFS/Plex/OpenVPN and some other plugins on a HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 G1610T and it runs fine. This has better specs so I would think you would be OK. Although i'm not sure what is required for encryption.

  • Whats your average shipping time? and where are the items being shipped from? keep hearing conflicting comments on whether you guys drop ship everything from OS or not.

    • Hi Copie, we have pickup stock in the Melbourne store and we will ship any non pickup orders from our own warehousing in Sydney, these are already bought and paid for as part of our own inventory and not drop shipped :) (note we dont ship anything from overseas)

Edit: shipping time general estimates - www.warehouse1.com.au/delivery

Obviously Sydney delivery or Melb will be the fastest :)

  • Were these the noisy servers? Seem to recall being brought up last time on ozb.
More interested in virtualisation, but 2 cores.

    • +3

The fan noise on boot up is really something. It only has one 120mm fan and it's going flat chat. Sounds like a jet taking off. But then the fan drops back to normal speeds and if it's not getting too hot, it's not that much noisier than an average 3-4 fan desktop rig. No-one would ever describe it as quiet though.

  • +1

I realise that's not what these were designed for but has anybody tried to covert it to a light gaming rig?

    • +1

You would need to upgrade the CPU, add more RAM and chuck in a dedicated GPU depending on what slots the motherboard has

    • +1

Heat and noise might be an issue. Too much heat and the fan kicks up, and the fan is noisy. Also, the fan has a non-standard pin-out so if you want to replace it with a different brand, you'll have to splice some wires. Also, the existing components have low power draw (50-80W with a couple of hard drives) but the power supply is only 350W so you wouldn't put in a GeForce GTX 1080 or anything :)

      • Thanks guys. I wasn't considering upgrading the CPU but just extra RAM and a dedicated graphics cards at the most. I remember somebody mentioning the GT 730 in the other thread as it only requires 60W and I would only utilise 2-3 hard drives at the most.

I just can't find a reasonably priced server and gaming solution in the one box. I know it can be possible but with more cash and a custom build (and a ton of configuration) but don't think I would have the know-how or patience to execute it.

  • +1

    Hi Rep,
Do you have a price on 8GB ECC DIMMs suitable for this server (unregistered, I believe), rather than the 4GB you listed?
Is it the KVR16E11/8HB for $67 (Not in stock)? if so, when would you have stock?

    • Hi Tyro, Kingston recommend these 2:

      KTH-PL316E/8G
      KTH-PL316ELV/8G

they arent in stock though, so we didnt post to the deal, if you are happy to backorder, Kingston stock usually takes about 2 weeks to come in.

This one, im not sure if it will work, but it too isnt in stock KVR16E11/8HB

      • Went to order but shipping for one stick came in at $19.49. Seems excessive since a HP ml10v2 is the same price :o

  • Good Replacement for my NL40 (which i've found restricted by 16GB max and CPU) ?

will all my NL40 components fit in here ? Memory mainly - and is the CPU much better cheers

Oh yeah and what about noise fan wise ?

    ta.

    • Hi Droodle - theres been some good discourse here that might help :) - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/244057

its pentium CPU which i believe is better than the celeron or amd cpus that were in the gen 7 microserver, some people say its louder, some people say about the same. It can do up to 32GB memory too.

Ive actually heard one person say they swapped out the CPU for another, can anyone confirm?

    • your memory at NL40 wont be compatible with this server. this server needs ECC memorey

  • +1

Wow that's crazy cheap if you can pickup.

  • Noob question sorry - these have a passive heat sink only, and rely on a single rear fan for cooling?
I assume proprietory plugs based on comments above also? (no chance to swap out with a desktop standard fan and/or HSF assembly?)
Tempting for a home NAS, as it looks like it could do a little plex transcoding

    • +1

Not sure about this one, but the original Microserver's could have the fan swapped - even with the proprietary connector.

      http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1193-page7.html

I'd assume the same would work on this model, you'd just have to find a supported fan.

    • Thanks. So they do come with the 4 bay drive cage?

      • they do come with a 4 bay drive cage, also i think with a bit of creativity, they can probably hold 6 drives with 2 more up top.. but we havent tested that theory by trying it with 6 drives, would welcome feedback from anyone who has tried?

        • Thanks

        • Yeah there's definitely space for 2 more drives up top, possibly more. However pretty sure the mobo only supports 6 drives total, so anymore you'll need another controller card.

        • @atlas:

Bingo, you can use a Lian Li 2x5.25 to 3x3.5 adaptor to give you another 3 bays. Also looking at it i think you can mod a 2nd 4 bay drive in the bottom as well if you modify the shroud.

      • +1

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. This clears it up nicely. The pictures are good, too. Thanks

Apparently you can swap the 4 bay LFF cage with an 8 bay SFF one..

Can't find many details on either though, so unsure if it's the entire "kit" .. And all the pics are generic 4 bays. :(

        • +2

@ryang: those look the goods, but the pricing in Australia is high, they are both as much or more than we are selling the whole server for ):

So maybe better to buy 2 servers instead :P

      • Not sure why you would want 8 small form factor drives though? Unless you want to stick a bunch of cheap SSDs in for speed as opposed to outright storage?

  • The server price is competitive; ebay feedback seems quite good but whirlpool forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2289733 seems to paint a whole other picture and it doesn't look so pretty.

Just wondering if others on Ozbargain have bought from Warehouse1 before?

    • +1

I've purchased a few things & never had any issue, fwiw.

      Cheers

    • Hi Bricks,

We surely make mistakes sometimes, just like anyone, all i could say is:

Whirlpool - anyone can put anything they want there, true or not, there are quite a few first time posters (14 of them) and some guy/s from megafail (negabuy) who like to post on our thread… (example sammit)

eBay - eBay only displays real feedback and if you stuff ebay users around i dont find that they are very forgiving…

So its an interesting contrast between the two, to decide what is and isnt really true, especially given the amount of positive feedbacks on eBay.

      Ebay feedback: http://feedback.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&u…

also - we ship out over 20,000 orders a year these days, so as hard as we try, its inevitable there will be hiccups along the way sometimes, statistically speaking. If that helps perspective wise.

Feel free to visit us in store if you are in Vic.

      Cheers :)

      • I understand and appreciate the replies @Geekomatic and rep.

This is ridiculously cheap, I don't need another server. But who doesn't need another server? I am so torn.

  • +1

How do these compare to the n40L? I use my n40L with an old gt610 for media pc work.

    • Bigger, louder, more powerful etc.

  • Is the 4GB ram that comes with it ECC?

    • yes it is. Microserver Gen 8 and ML10V2 memory are compatible each other

  • Arrgh, just picked one up for $199 in the last deal - awesome server, highly recommended - keep in mind it is a server though, not a normal PC.

  • Wouldn't mind picking one up but my HP N40L still going strong and kinda hate reconfiguring from scratch on my Windows home server.

    • Have you used sysprep before to move Windows installations?

      • Haven't done that before so no idea at all. Regardless, my HP N40L sit comfortably in my ikea shelf. Don't think this server would fit snuggly…

  • +1

Not interested in buying the MI10v2, but kudos for the excellent information and combo deals provided, as well as photos of the internals.

One day another great G8 deal will come by.

    • Careful.. The Gen9 is going to hit Aus soon, so there might not be many more deals!

      • Bah, it's getting impossible to keep up these days.

But I'm guessing the RRP of the Gen9's will be quite high…

        • Could only find USD pricing which was quite good, around $200-300, for a small spec bump.

      • there's a hp gen 9 microserver ?
…or are you referring to something else?

bought 2 of the basic ML10 v2 servers, and a stick of RAM. Thanks, Warehouse1

    • Although only the 2 servers were delivered… I had to contact the Warehouse1 support team to find out why the extra RAM stick wasn't included. Apparently they'll tell me why soon, and then arrange delivery.

  • Would this unit work with non-ecc RAM? So not mixing RAM types but all non-ecc RAM? Has anyone tried?

    • No

      • So you know that the server will not accept non-ecc RAM from specs or experience?

        • Ok No non-ECC supported.

          Confirmed here…http://serverfault.com/questions/765217/install-new-g-skill-ripsaw-x-ram-into-hp-proliant-ml10-v2-causes-black-screen-an

        • The CPU also has ECC support

  • +1

Just bought the 4X6tb kit. It'll keep me busy next week.

  • Ordered mine friday morning, shipped that afternoon which is excellent, plan is to dump one of my spare xeon e3-1231v3's in, adding another 4hdd caddy in the bottom with a little bit of modifying, a 2x5.25 to 3x3.5inch caddy in the cd drive slots, and popping an adaptec 5805 in. 11 drives will be 5tb toshibas.

    • Hmm got mine this morning, missing the extra stick of ram for it.

      • The ram stick will come seperately :)

      • Same. Had to contact them to learn that the RAM would come separately. Would have been easy enough to write it on the box , or send an email stating that the Ram would come separately.

    • Out of curiosity, do you already have that adaptec controller? A quick google showed it costs about $900? Know of any cheaper alternatives?

      • +1

They are 60 bucks for a brand new unit off ebay. They are a pretty old controller, but work quite well.

        • Definitely! There are a boatload of RAID controllers on eBay - Adaptec, LSI, etc - more than good enough for the job!

    • Did you end up fitting 11 drives? Can the PSU cope?

I bought the Adaptec controller and will be installing it tonight. Bought a mini SAS fanout x4 cable, but just realized I'll also need extra power cabling.

I haven't inspected the PSU yet, but do you know what internal power cabling I'll need for 4 additional 3.5" HDD?

  • Are the dimensions correct? The box seems massive (compared to my nl40) is it really twice the size?

    • Yep dimensions are correct, it's a fairly typical mid sized case

  • Asked the rep this question. No Answer yet. Can anyone else confirm if the following RAM will work?

    https://www.warehouse1.com.au/epages/shop.sf/sec6a0fc12c8b/?…

    TIA.

    • Honestly, we have only tested the Kingston, so its a bit difficult to answer as we dont stock that RAM and there is no configuration tool telling us it will work (kingston there is)

  • Well it is in stock according to the link…

    http://www.warehouse1.com.au/epages/shop.sf/en_AU/?ObjectPat…

If it works then it just a little bit cheaper. Not sure why it should not but there is no definitive answer that I could find.

  • RAM gone up to 39.00, another point the shipping charges vary between adding to cart and getting to payment screen. Not sure if many people noticed it.

    • Hi Some_one,

freight charges will change depending on postcode, as per the freight estimator on the page :)

the shopping cart will show default local Sydney/Melb/BNE freight until it knows your postcode. (it cant tell you the postcode differential if it hasnt been entered yet, which is during the checkout process)

the RAM was $39 at the start of the promotion and still should be 39, also the cheapest on staticice is 44, http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=KTH-PL316ES%2F4…

hope that clears it up :)

      • How about this..a similar looking website..but lot cheaper…http://www.itmadness.com.au/epages/shop.sf/?Locale=en_AU&ObjectPath=/Shops/Itmadness/Products/000000000002533050&ViewAction=ViewProductViaPortal

As for shipping, it says AUS wide shipping so I assume there is a standard delivery charge.

        • Price update updwards here too…so this is also part of warehouse1..

    • This might help with what you are after..http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/crucial-vs-hp-server-memory-compare-by-configuration

      • Thanks Interesting

  • Awesome price. Looking for the smaller micro server form factor though.

  • Can the 4g be paired with the 4gb it already comes with?

Or can I add 8gb of kingston to the 4gb already there, to make 12gb?

I cant remember how the RAM rules work.

My N40l has 4gb but nearly a bottle neck. Id like to have more RAM with my next upgrade, but wouldnt bother if I have to throw the stick that it comes with out.

    • The ML10v2 has 4 slots, you can install whatever you want (if the motherboard likes it), the ram rules only exist to satisfy the mainboard requirements (mostly: which slots 2 or 3 sticks can be installed in) and for dual/quad channel memory bandwidth (which has negligible real world performance boosts).

  • My ML10v2 arrived today! Will likely move the zfs pool from my intermittently not "booting" N40L and see how the ML10v2 fares.

  • just picked up one with extra ram from Melbourne, good service. Deal has not expired.

The box is heavy to walk home with though…
