Depends what you want it for. If for backups you want the regular version as you're more then twice as likely to suffer a failure with this drive. If you want it as a scratch disk this is ideal. And if you're too lazy to backup your want the regular version.

      • Why is this drive more than twice as likely to fail?

        • +1

Contains two drives instead of one so if one of them fails it'll stop working.

        • @silent1: but that does not make it more likely to fail??

        • +2

@Junk Collection: Yes it does, basic stats.

Two hard drives, if either drive fails all the data is gone. Plus added controller, if this fails your data is gone. Pretty clear cut.

got to love this site I get negged for asking a genuine question, so its nothing to do with the quality of the drive it's just an opinion about 50/50 drive rate failure doubled because there are 2 drives.

There is no opinion as you claim, two drives doubles the risk of failure and this is a fact.

Assume one drive has a 1 in 1500 chance of failure which means two drives have a nearly 2 in 1500 chance of failure and so forth.

Two drives standalone have a nearly 2 in 1500 chance of failure but you only lose the data on that one drive whereas the striped drive will lose the data from both drives as your have doubled the chances of this occurring.

This doesn't take into account controller failure which increases the risk further.

@Maverick-au: Assume? yep you just said it your making assumptions about the chance of failure, drive failures are random and I don't think you can put a figure on it but according to you assume if I buy 2 lotto tickets am I twice as likely to win?

        • +8

@Junk Collection: I buy 2 lotto tickets am I twice as likely to win?
You need to revisit year 10 probability.

        • @Junk Collection:

Assume? yep you just said it your making assumptions about the chance of failure, drive failures are random and I don't think

I was using an example so as not to tax your maths ability but it appears I still made the number too big. It didn't matter what the figure is as the example is still correct. It could be a MTBF of 10,000 hours, it could be 200 power cycles or 5,000,000 reads but nothing changes.

ut according to you assume if I buy 2 lotto tickets am I twice as likely to win?

What do you think? Two tickets with different numbers will double your chances of winning.

        • -1

@paul_5666: yeah and you missed my point about the probability of winning lotto it's random.

        • -2

          @Junk Collection:

yeah and you missed my point about the probability of winning lotto it's random.

Winning the lotto isn't random. The numbers that are drawn are random but most people pick their numbers which are not random so you can improve the odds at winning big by letting the computer select your numbers.

        • -3

@Maverick-au: no I don't think buying 2 lotto tickets will give me double the chance to win.

        • +5

          @Maverick-au: I appreciate your patience Maverick-au.

        • @DisabledUser111926:

Urmm yes it does. You have 1 ticket, 1 chance to win. 2 tickets, 2 chances to win. 2 = 1 x 2 = double. Don't know how difficult that is to understand?

BUT… to say that this drive is twice as likely to fail, hrmm I dunno. There are plenty of other factors coming into it. If you really want to work out probably, the two drives is only a minute drop in calculating drive failure so just because it has two drives doesn't mean it's twice as likely to fail because factors like production errors, personal handling, packaging, shipment, retail handling and delivery, AUSpost all have a role to play. But I digress.

        • @Maverick-au:

          Slightly wrong answer …

Numbers selected are random, but from a finite population (number of discrete combinations). Buy two tickets with two different combinations, you get two from the finite population, so double the chance the 'random' number matches one of your choices (but odds against are so high, doesn't really matter - see those buying systems which are equivalent to buying 60-80 sets of numbers …)

If we played russian roulette, would you be unfazed if I stuck 2 bullets in the gun instead of just one?

        • @Yongaz:
Wow I just re-read my own post. It hurt my face because of how bad it was written.

          Slightly wrong answer …

          Numbers selected are random

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say.

To maximise payouts in a lotto win you want to have numbers that no-one else has and the best way to achieve this is to let the system choose for you.

They used to release data on the most common numbers picked and this showed that many people select similar numbers.

        • @Yongaz:

to say that this drive is twice as likely to fail, hrmm I dunno. There are plenty of other factors coming into it.

The drive as you put it is two drives and if either fails all data is gone. If the controller fails the data is give unless your can obtain another one and assuming it hasn't corrupted the data.

        • @Maverick-au:

oh not disputing that, but to say that it's twice as likely to fail would be discount all the factors that contributes to it failing. That's all I'm saying. So imo, I wouldn't say twice as likely to fail, but definitely more likely to fail because of the two drives.

Reviews claim this is two laptop drives in RAID-0.

    • Interesting

I used to spend extra money to buy special enclosures to raid my drives. This does it for no extra cost and in 2.5" form factor. Wonder if I can mod the enclosure to do Raid 1

      • +1

Wonder if I can mod the enclosure to do Raid 1

        No.

    • +1

Hmm… laptop drive reliability is not spectacular as it is. In RAID 0, if just one of them dies you will lose all your data.

    • so would I get two standard 2.5" 2TB drives if I rip them out?

    • link?

    • I think its the only way to get this type of throughput on mechanical drives.. Stripe sets..

    • does it mean the storage size is actually 2T as it is using RAID-0 to get FAST transmission

      • +1

oh, raid 0 still gets total 4T storage

  • +1

    wow that is epic.

    • -7

      That's what she said.

  • Does the OneDrive storage expire? They are going to be changing their storage plans.

  • Would this speed up xbox one load times for external games over say a standard usb3 hdd?

    • yes it is possible with an ssd so this drive may have faster load times, read this https://bendodson.com/weblog/2015/06/19/using-an-ssd-with-xb…

    • I have a 3TB 3.5 7200RPM external Seagate drive. Does it help? Sure. Will it make a big difference? Probably not. But it is pretty much guaranteed it won't be slower than loading from the internal drive.

      • This is two hard drives in raid-0 so will be much faster than your single drive

  • Great price. As fast as first-gen SSD? Sorry but not even close.

Btw here's details of the drive: As mentioned it is 2 x 2TB in RAID0

  • Purchased - thank you !! :)

Ok, I have an Amazon account but the drive won't ship to Australia, what's the best way to get it here to Brisbane?

    • +1

Not sure if the only way to get it to Australia is through one of the other sellers other than Amazon eg:
eg for $199. Perhaps you need freight-fowarding to use this deal above.
I think the slower one is more reliable in the long term. But a fantastic price.

  • Looks like this is back up to $187.49USD now :(
    Non-fast version is $124.85

  • What's the going price on 4tb NAS drives atm? Is a WD red the best buy? What price should I wait for?
