As OP said - these do not have the lightbridge technology. I would advocate that you purchase the advanced or pro models over this for increased travel distances.

    • +2

You're only allowed to fly them line of site anyway. :)

      • That's still a couple of hundred kays in the Gibson…

    • What is lightbridge technology??

  • +3

Damn! Very tempted but without lightbridge its a no go. Great price though!

    • +3

Yes I have passed on it too… but had to post it still at that price.

    • What is lightbridge ?

      • +1

Lightbridge allows you to fly the drone a good ~4km.. where as the tech in this one limits it to ~1km

      • +2

lightbridge is a digital connection to your drone/controller, it streams video from the drone to your tablet in hd with zero interference or dropouts and doesnt need line of sight, it records your feed straight to your tablet in high quality, you dont need to retrieve the memory card from the drone the recording quality to tablet is so high

the drones without lightbridge just use wifi standard definition, which is patchy and breaks up the further the drone flies from controller, it requires line of sight to work well

  • Can someone explain what no lightbridge means? Does it come with a remote and can I view it using my Android phone?

    • Lightbridge is a proprietary digital transmission that gives you 720p Like video signal. It uses a bunch of tricks to boost the range, with less dropouts and more framerate than a clunky wifi.

You can use an app to view the wifi video (and even stream it to periscope!), but it's a bit laggy and shouldn't ever be used if you are flying reasonably close to anything.

      Good price tbh.

      • Thanks for that. Will the standard be sufficient for general filming say in the outback?

Can lightbridge be installed in the future? And does this come with a remote?

        • +1

Well as my experience with the p3 standard, around sydney the range is about 600 meters then it lose the signal and come back home. And with my new P3 advanced with lightbridge it bootst to 1.4 km and lose the signal, remind you this is in busy area but if in the city maybe shorter and if it in outback and clear area it will more range for both p3 with and without light-bridge. I fpund some way to boost the signal of both p3 but have to order from US and mod your controller with some solder skill.

        • @hivboy1: ah for lightbridge you cant install it in future because it need both remote and the drone as I can see.

  • +2

Cant decide if i should just wait and buy the Xiaomi Drone 4K..

    • the Xiaomi drone won't have the fleet of sensors and integration that this will. This would be more "beginner friendly", while I bet the xiaomi one will probably be a diy'er/hackers dream to modify and tweak.

    • +3

I'm the same about the mi drone….. looks very good
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9T9URqd6hg

I also wonder if, down the track, as the camera is removeable, if xiaomi might produce a handle to make something similar to the osmo?

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diZNWXE-yqU

      • +1

I think i might wait for the Mi Drone 4K, might as-well keep going with my Xiaomi collection already using a Xiaomi Phone, Xiaomi Yi Camera, Xiaomi Power Bank, Headphones list goes on… the quality and style is great for the price.

    • +3

I also wonder if DJI will do some significant 'pre-mi drone' discounting, to tempt those of us who are waiting for the mi….

    • I would say after the currency conversion the price would come close.

    • +1

Depends how you want to use it. It will be Xiaomi ver 1.00, so you can expect some teething problems. Here you are buying ver 3.5 and there were some problems with DJI before. I like Xiaomi too, have few of their products, but as I said, would probably wait for ver 2 :-)
Great price for the DJI 3 with 4k camera, I personally don't have a need for the lightbridge, so thumbs up from me :-)

      • Me too. Also sometimes with version 2 there is a price jump. So for the Xiaomi Yi action camera it came in around $100 whereas the new version is coming up at around $350 for presales (without a case). Which is the price of a Hero 4 Silver on sale (with under water housing)

  • This is similar to the Phantom 3 Standard with a 4K camera. It is not quite the same as a Phantom 3 Professional

    • As mentioned its a bit between the standard and the advanced.. has a few features of each.

    • +2

I bought the Phantom 3 std a few mths ago thru valuebasket when they had $100 off.

Hard to keep line of sight when 400+ metres away, I've kept the max altitude at 120 metres. Also hard to see the video output on the smart phone app when in full light.

The Phantom 3 std exceeds my current needs.

      • so you would recommend?

        • +3

I'm happy with the Phantom 3 standard. I guess it depends on your budget and what you can justify.

The additional features of the pro exceed my needs (and CASA's regulations).

You'll also need to budget for an additional battery.

        • @Marky66: Would you really need an extra battery?

        • +3

          @YellowKnight:
As you generally spend some time to drive to a location, make the most by having a 2nd battery

  • Op has copied and pasted specs which is fine but whats the real flying time?
25 mins seems a bit of a stretch or would this be with camera off etc.

  • +4

    I have a 4K too.
As Mark said, CASA regulations mean you cannot take the drone out of line of sight.

I have been yet to exceed the flight limit and take it out of range ( although I have had the first person view drop out in high wind ).

The 4K has so far exceeded all my expectations.

If I had the extra money, yes I would buy the Pro ( just because ), but I didn't .

The 4K video I have downloaded has been excellent !!!!

    • All the videos I see seem to be out of line of sight.

  • +2

20 minutes 'ish, depending on wind etc .

My thoughts would be save the money you would spend on the Pro, use it to buy more GENUINE batteries, and a 12V charger/power supply :)

    • I didn't realize how expensive the batteries were.

  • +1

I get around 18-20min-ish with my Phantom 3 pro but still leave the battery around 25-30% and don't completely drain it if you want it to last.. they are not cheap.

A simple mod which cost about $10 is to buy windsurfers which will help increase range.. forget about those pricey controller mods if you will be doing it on the standard.

My max distance is about 3km-ish so far (stock) without the windsurfers/mods.. Yet to test range properly.

At least 2 batteries is a must.

I have 3 now and could do with another 2 but the are pricey.

    I have these http://www.dx.com/p/antenna-signal-amplifier-range-booster-f…

If it was me, i would go for the advance for another $320.

  • Meh, just got 2 p3 professionals (business related) on latest firmware and I can't seem to pass 200m altitude! What a joke!

I haven't tried distance but altitude is very important to me and 200m is nothing

    Should've bought 4k version instead

By the way, negotiated with DWI and got the pro for $1300 one week ago. Grey import though

Anybody know if the 32 channel hack will void warranty?

    • Probably not, its a easy hack.

But you shouldn't be going anywhere near 200m

How have you got the antennas pointed?

      • Horizontal. The way it should be if the drone is above you.

Can you reverse or undo the 32 channel hack?

        • Yes, just delete the file and change region/language settings.

Litchi also another great app which i don't use as often as im happy with the GO App.

        • @strat:

          Which region/language settings?

        • @sirs2k:

          Tablet language settings.

          You using iOS or android?

        • @strat:

Using my phone which is Android

    • I haven't used the DJI app - I use Litchi only with my P3P and under transmission settings, it has the all 32 channels listed by default and setting to auto skips around them to the best one without any problem, between that and my windsurfer, I maintain full bars up at least 600m out (I can still see it fine out there with bright purple stripes on the front arms) - but that's as far as I've pushed it… probably would go further easily.

As for the height restrictions, if I remember my youtube adventures, as you approach the ceiling height, you press and hold the home button for 2 seconds and then continue up (may or may not be correct, have a look there are a dozen videos for getting around this) - not that I advocate it, unless without appropriate approvals from the powers that be :P :P

      • Transmission settings? I don't have that in my litchi app.

Do you have to log in?

I've been trying the orbit and follow modes, disappointing as it's not accurate because it depends on the GPS of the phone which isn't very accurate.
Even when I pin point a location on satellite view it's not accurate.
I'm talking about a 3m altitude here, of course if higher then there's more room for error

    • But 4K version doesnt have Lightbridge, has less range ?

I couldn't bring myself to spend the extra on the Pro over the 4K, given I started out only looking at the standard, the 4K was a price hike ( and I was trying to keep the wife from going postal )

I thought about the advanced for the same money as the 4k when I bought, so I would have Lightbridge, but in the tossup higher video quality ended up winning .

      • No 4k only has Wifi stream but with a 4k camera
It all depends on how far and what you're using it for.

        Research about the different models

        • I know…

I was asking because you said you should have bought the 4K version instead

Your two Pro versions have Lightbridge, so I wondered what you meant….

Were you meaning you should have bought a DJI 4 , with it's greater again range than the DJI 3 Professional ??

        • @dalealford:

Sorry I miss understood, yeah I meant for the range problems I'm having with the pro's I should've saved my money and bought 4k version.

Do what I use them for doesn't require much range but thought of video transmission quality when I picked the pros

    • Not trying to be a smart arse, but how are you getting round CASA's 400ft altitude limit? Saying "200m is nothing" seems pretty cavalier?

  • +1

Does anyone know if goods shipped from Kogan AU eBay (listing say Melbourne stock with local warranty) come with a GST invoice + an ABN to claim TRS?

    • +2

YES, I got an invoice that has an ABN for Kogan Australia in the top right hand corner.
It lists the price breakdown including GST

  • Would't it be better to get the Phantom 3 2.7K Advanced for $1,399?

  • +2

Just bit the bullet and got one. Can't wait, but also can't believe delivery will take so long. 17-24 June? That's two to three weeks delivery from Melbourne.

    • Might not be coming from there… or might be just to cover themselves. In one of the last sales I ordered a Wii U from one of the big chains and that said 3 weeks, but it was here in 2 days.

      • What chain was that? I have just read that Kogan sources most of their stuff from Hong Kong. Funny since they claim they are an authorised dealer for DJI.

        • Big W or Target from memory.

Kogan do bring a lot of stuff in from overseas, no GST etc… but somebody already said that these Kogan Australia things come with a GST receipt, and they do say its official Australian stock… so have to wait and see.

        • @Pobman: yeah I have it in writing from Kogan AU eBay that they will be an ABN on the receipt, the price includes GST, and it's local stock, which ties in with what dalealford was saying

        • @Symbiotic: If it's genuine stock I hope it gets delivered faster than 2-3 weeks.

  • Pulled the pin and bought one + a spare battery. I fly to the UK in 59 days so the TRS swung it for me. I'm assuming the receipt is going to say $799.20 for the quad and not $999. I'm not going to complain if I can claim back GST from the $999…

    • +1

what did you pay for the battery?

Batteries for the P3 were around $170 a few weeks ago.. but seem to have gone back to RRP price.

      • That is a great price. Was that with Kogan? Normal RRP or some sort of special?

        • Local stock normally around $250 unless you find a sale as kogan had them for $189 on dicksmith website with 10% off dji gear.

      • +1

Unfortunately I paid the ludicrous price of $207.20 ($259 - 20% off) for a battery:(
I did see that they've been cheaper recently elsewhere (on Kogan eBay too), but couldn't find any cheaper online. I figured after the TRS refund it's still an ok deal. If I see them back on special at $170 I'll probably buy a third.

        • +2

Not only should you buy a third but you should post it on here so I cam buy one too.

    • +1

The receipt will say $999 because the discount is through ebay. So the store still sold if for $999 it is just that ebay paid 20% of it.

      • Awesome - should be able to claim GST back from $1258 then

    • Isn't it pretty bag to take in your hand luggage?

      • You would have to lug it around everywhere you go until you came back.

      • +1

I've checked the dimensions of the case and can easily take it as hand luggage. Will probably just put it in checked luggage, though.

        From the TRS site:

"you wear or carry the goods (unless they are liquids, gels or aerosols or oversized or bulky goods which the airline require to be checked in) as hand luggage aboard the aircraft or ship as you leave Australia, or check the goods in with your luggage after they have been verified by an officer at a Client Services counter."

        • I don't know how you would check it in since the TRS is always after customs which is after you have checked everything in already.

        • @YellowKnight: the client services counter / CBP is before check-in. They can verify what you have vs the receipt and stamp the receipt to validate you're good for TRS

        • +1

          @YellowKnight:

When I flew out of Brisbane in April they said there is now a counter ground side to show things if they won't go in hand luggage….

        • Just remember lipo batteries have to be carried in person on the plane and can't be checked in.

  • +2

some images and vids I took up at Elmore ( vic ) at the field day site a few weeks ago.

beware of the vids on a slow connection or mobile, they are a couple of hundred meg in size

    https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0Bz90kyiyhPwCUi1zck9p…

    Cheers

    Dale

    • Nice vid but your Google drive is not doing it any justice as it's compressed your vid. Even though it says HD the vid is still blurry.

  • Anyone who ordered early received a dispatch email yet?

  • +1

    According to http://www.phantompilots.com/threads/cheap-strong-case-in-au…
The ToolPro Safe Case fits the phantoms nicely.
It's already on special, and is part of the click20 promotion (can be picked up in store). Works out at $54.40.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/222101463480

    • +1

Note on these cases from SCA.. It would be best to go in store and check them personally.

Mine arrived with a warped bottom (inwards) so trying to fit the phantom 3 pro with the props on kept hitting the top of the case cover.

I went crazy trying to work out how others are getting it to fit until i found the issue.

Tried heating with a heat gun and applying pressure but it kept bending back.. I gave up and purchase one of these for $90.

      Can see a picture here

  • Any P3 batteries suggested?

  • Still no dispatch notice and I ordered this last Wednesday. I was hoping to have it in time for the long weekend.

  • +2

    Mine just arrived!

Contacted them regarding a receipt and I received the following reply, contrary to some other Ozbargainer's conversations?

Kogan Rep: "I see. Yes, usually it will state on the website. Unfortunately, as this is supplied by Kogan HK (Hong Kong) Limited, and as such, GST is not applicable."

I've escalated as i'll need the GST invoice with ABN to claim TRS.

    • That's not very good, it was clearly marked as Australian stock in the description. Should verify with DJI that it is, so all your Australian consumer rights are covered.

      • Yeah, i've noted this to them and also taken screenshots for evidence incase they change anything.

    • Did you get any notification that it was coming? Was it new?

      • It has arrived already, and was tracked from AusPost as originating from Melbourne.

    • How dodgy that.. states in ebay listing its Aussie stock.

Does the barcode on the box have a AU on it?

      • No way to tell, however the AC wall charger is Aus, so i'm assuming it is.

      • +1

Yes it does have the AU sticker, but no Invoice supplied to me either.
I have contacted them and waiting for response.

    • +3

Just a quick update - I have requested an invoice for the "Australian Stock DJI Phantom 3 4k" and I have received it within few hours.
As stated below - it was not included in the package.
The good news is - the invioce is for the full $999. That is $90 TRS refund for me!
Thanks OzBargain! With the cashback $12.49 this beauty cost me $695.89, can't complain about it

  • Can anyone check if they have gold stickers on top of the middle of the drone? I found it weird how some stickers were already stuck onto mine.

    • +1

Yes they come fitted and are crappy from factory mine arrived half off.. They keep peeling.

      It's a known problem.

      • Are yours on the arms of the drone?

I have those which I assumed was fine, but also have some weird extra diagonal ones like this: http://imgur.com/0OAFsPn

        • What the hell??

          No that is not normal.

Were you prompted to activate the drone once first connected to it with DJI Go App?

          Should be like this http://goo.gl/I6hiL5

        • What the hell? I hope I don't get home today all excited and open it to find that. I don't think it's meant to have that stuff on it.

        • LoL!!! Sorry but I couldn't help myself when I saw those stickers dodgily stuck to the middle!

Jokes aside, it looks like someone probably stuck your spare stickers onto the middle. You should have a sticker pack similar to this in amongst your goodies box.
