    • That's a selling point, you won't have to wear glasses.

  • are archive drives only for documents and photos? so like u cant use them daily for video/music playback sort of thing? never heard of them before

    • You can, but they'll be really slow if you copy lots of data back and forth.

    • I actually have one of these in my current HTPC and it's awesome for that purpose. The only thing is writing to the drive is slow, like really slow. When I first got it the initial files copied at relatively normal speed. But I was copying 6tb worth of media and it slowed down to about 30mb/s. But once you have your media on it, it's perfect

      • Good for read bad for Read/write.

I use them for backup (which is non optimal)

The best use is as a media server drive where you don't usually delete video just occasionally add files.

        • Basically they are shingle drives.

They write at such a high density that the tracks overlap each other. This requires some trickery on the part of the OS/firmware. This means they tend to be fast until the internal buffer fills up then they drop in speed. The buffer is several gigabytes (30 GB from memory) so it doesn't fill up to fast.

So they make a truly terrible raid drive but a good media drive.

High-density 8TB hard drives for ** petabytes of affordable and accessible long-term online storage ** isn't this a blatant lie.
Doesn't this break the law with this claim. a; it doesnt hold a petabyte. b;cant independantly access online storage.
I dont know if its trying to say it could be a server drive, which would be crap too, no?

Thanks. Just got an 8tb drive with free delivery. Cheaper then the Shopping Express epic hour deal last Sunday.

  • Thinking of using the Archive drives in a Synology RAID system?
