Not so compelling for laser printers when generic toner cartridges are cheap enough. I'm still using a HL2130 with generic cartridges.
yeah I have a brother 1430 that must be nearly 15 years old.. has never missed a beat.
my family/friends have a few with same experience.
number 1 workhorse laser company imo(a friend bought the colour laser 9200cdw and printed 20,000 within a few months.. no issues.)
I have a Brother HL 2240D, when it tells me it's out of ink I just do a hard reset and it just starts printing again.
I order non-genuine cartridges from eBay and they last about 1,000 double sided pages+, but as this is a different model YMMV.
about $10 of toner refill will get you like 1500 pages I think. It's easy to do and well worth it. This is the opposite of a disposable printer. Yes maybe for the drum, but that lasts for several thousand pages (10,000 I think).

unfortunately it dots every 5cm in one line down every page like a ticker tape machine, but cheap laser printers are the best.@keplers
yeah you probably know but that's probably your drum or corona wire.
i had similar and cleaned the green cylinder with a cotton bud and that fixed it.be careful cleaning the drum tho, do a youtube search on it perhaps.
I think they are sensitive uv rays and some chemicals.dunno, but i thought this probably happened to me because I was using dodgy paper (already printed on one side for example).. staples I wouldn't see, or holes. toner would pass through back onto the cylinder.
What makes a good home printer?
This is good as it is compact, and with a bottle of toner refill you're set for the next few years.

it depends on your circumstances.
i assume you mean laser printer.. which I recommend most often.a few things to consider.
does it have wifi? may be handy if you have many devices to print from, or you print often from laptop. (or some routers can act as a print server)
does it have duplex printing, ie double-sided printing?
do you have a scanner/copier already? consider getting an mfc. if getting an mfc, does it have an adf.. and if so, can it scan both sides at once (ie single-pass duplex scanning/photocopying.. a great feature if you intend to archive a lot of documents etc)
most importantly, is it compatible with your devices.. operating systems.
I find it's also good to keep an eye on printing speed + noisiness of the printer.

Many WiFi routers have a USB socket, and can turn a "normal" printer into a WiFi-capable printer. I recommend people do this in preference to buying a printer with built-in WiFi.
It does, however, mean that your printer has to be reasonably close to your router, as USB cables can only reach 5m in normal circumstances.
I'm intrigued as to what abnormal circumstances a USB cable could reach further than 5m. Perhaps if one was to dip into a black hole's event horizon it could reach further through the powers of spaghettification.
You can put a USB hub every 5 metres along the cable, so it re-generates the signal. Every second hub should probably be a powered hub. Or you can use a USB extender.
I've used a USB extender over 15 metres, but the one I used was limited to USB1.1 speeds. That shouldn't be a huge limitation for a printer, I suspect most printers are only USB1.1 anyway.

@Russ: USB1.2 devices are very rare now, nearly everything is at least USB2. I have an ancient flatbed scanner which is USB1.2 and won't connect to a USB3 port so I used a hub as a go-between.
Perhaps I should have said "printers are only capable of 12Mbps" instead of "most printers are USB1.1".
Having a device report itself as USB2 and actually transmitting at 480Mbps are different things. All devices must enumerate at USB1.1 speeds, then they switch to 480Mbps if they are capable of that speed.
USB2.0 specifies THREE possible speeds: 480Mbps, 12Mbps and 125kbps. Yep, you read that correctly, 125kbps. USB keyboards and computer mice talk at 125kbps, there's no need for them to go faster. Gaming mice may be different, but I doubt they go to 480Mbps.
It's easy to tell if your device is capable of 480Mbps speed, if you have a USB 1.1 hub. Plug your device into the hub, and if Windows doesn't pop up a "your device could perform faster" notice, your device doesn't go faster than USB 1.1 speeds.
If your scanner can't connect to a USB3 port, you have a problem with your USB3 port. Even in a USB3 port, the devices must first enumerate at USB1.1 speed, so the USB3 port is definitely capable of USB1.1 speed. Try a USB keyboard in the USB3 port, that should work (at 125kbps!) too.
@Russ: That's the theory, however my experience in the field is that sometimes things that are claimed to be backward compatible aren't, because not every combination has been tested, and no way the scanner mfr (Canon) is going to take responsibility for something made a couple of decades ago. Even the Wiki page acknowledges compatibility problems can occur. I had a keyboard and mouse (Lenovo) that wouldn't activate on a USB3 port on a high-end workstation. Again, a hub, this time a USB1.2 one, fixed that. Generally one generation apart is ok, e.g. 1.2 <-> 2, or 2 <-> 3.

I had this printer. didnt like the print quality though. and on fine quality print it would fail to print some files due to lack of memory.

Any of the Brother LAN/WiFi models IME, since generic carts, drums & toner refill kits are easy to find on the cheap.
I just bought a usb print server off ebay for 13 bucks and connect any printer I like.
Is the print server wireless? Or does it need to be plugged into the router?

Cool, thanks for the link. I was wondering because my printer isn't wireless (but does have ethernet and USB) and I've run out of ports on my router (so I currently have it connected to the router's USB port, and it has a built-in print server)
I'm pretty sure your printer does not require gigabit ethernet…
gigabit hubs are pretty cheap too these days anyway…

the devices you connect to the hub/switch will be limited by the speed of the switch.
the devices connected directly to your router will be limited by the speed of the router.I need to get one too… MSY have gigabit switches for $19… seem to have good reviews.
just found out this printer is USB only, no network port… The good guys website is misleading…

Just do a search on eBay for brother hl-1110 toner and you'll get prices starting from $12 each in multiples.
If that's the case, does it make sense to go for inkjet one vs this one?
I never owned an inkjet so I can't compare for you, but I wouldn't pay the costs of ink cartridges per page.

Compare that with ink. I have even heard that the ink in cartidges can sell for more than the cost of gold.You can leave a laser printer idle for a year, and it'll work first time when you want it. Leave an inkjet printer idle for a year, and you'll be performing cleaning cycles in the best case, or throwing out a dried ink cartridge (and maybe the printer) in the worst case.
However laser printers are really only good if you want monochrome prints. Colour lasers are readily available, but substantially more expensive, and you'll choke when you see the price of replacement cartridges. Inkjets are definitely worth considering if you need colour printouts.

I recently replaced the CM205 OEM toners with a generic SET for $35 inc postage, yep for the SET and the replacements are fantastic too! The Xerox was about $300 so a different price range, my HL1110 is ok for the price, but the solid black from the Xerox beats the HL1110 like chalk & cheese.
That sounds like a nice printer, if your usage is high enough. But for me, if I invested that same $300 in a bank account at 3%, the interest alone would pay for my colour printouts, paying Officeworks for every page.
Officeworks can do A3 colour printouts too, under $2 each, if you want to print photos.
Each to their own. But does that $9 (probably closer to $6 after tax) pay for the trip to Officeworks (travel time + fuel + wear & tear)? In our case Officeworks is 20min each way. Also, the "photocopy" function of the CM205 is very convenient.
Great little printer, had one before I upgraded and it never missed a beat. Replacement Brother toner cartridges are about $60 and they're good for about 1000 pages of text printing. Generic toner cartridge are cheaper but not recommended for this unit.

Probably, but I never tried. I know that these low end mono laser printers don't perform well with cheap ink, which is why generic toner cartridges aren't recommended.
This printer uses toner, so I don't believe it's refillable.

Toner, not ink. And the answer is yes. I've had this unit for a few years now and have been refilling it without issue. Great value unit.

I bought mine from Tonerstop because I've used them before, the product is good, they are local and deliver fast. $49 gets you enough toner for another 12,000 pages.
@virhlpool: It's such a cheap printer if $49 prints 12,000 pages. I would def go for it if it had scanner too.
Problem with this printer is papers coming out of it all get curled up permanently due to excessive heat so they won't lay flat.

The problem is your use of cheap paper that is stored incorrectly. Reduced the moisture in your paper and use a paper designed for a laser printer and you won't have problems.

People still print? I just use works printer and sparingly at that.
Some people don't work and they need a cheap printer to print out their resume. It's a vicious cycle.
Even when you are working in an office where there is a workgroup printer, some stuff is just not appropriate to be printed there, so you still need one at home IMO.
These days resume's are all done via email. With other stuff like forms, I fill them out electronically and transmit.
I wish printers were not needed. Sadly, signing of legal documents is one reason I print. Another is kids school assignments. Another is Ebay click & send postage labels for my ebay store.
Bought this in 2014 for $33. Surprised they are still manufacturing this model.
WE used to use this at dicksmith when our printer ran out of ink for printing promotional flyers and what not.
Is it NOT BUILT FOR COMMERCIAL USE. It gets very hot, i swear one time it started smoking because it had like a 500 page queue.Considering buying one for the home though since i print like 2-3 times a week tops. And my stupid inkjet keeps telling me the ink is low (for like the past half a year)
Sometimes they look like they're smoking, but it's not smoke. It's steam, as moist paper passes the fuser the heat turns the moisture into steam. Most paper will become slightly moist in humid weather.
If you see smoke or steam, smell it to see if it's actually smoke.
I purchased the printer last year for about $35 from OW. A few days ago, it finally ran out of toner, so I changed it with this that I purchased off eBay. The printer is running smoothly.
Yes I agree. Protoner ebay is where I purchased the replacement toner for my Xerox CM205 and they are great!
I bought one of these a while back and I get the feeling it's about to run out of ink in the cartridge it came with. Can anyone point me in the direction of a cheap generic cartridge I can replace it with?
If the prints still look okay, wait until it refuses to print, then put the printer in "continue" mode by pressing the power button seven times. It will then continue to print from the supposedly "empty" cartridge.

I actually found a generic toner at Salvo's for $2.00!!!
They even had my Epson ink cartridges in a bin for 75 cents each- lol…

I've had this printer for several months now - great value for the price and still haven't needed to change the toner.
The small footprint of this thing shouldn't be overlooked - takes up very little desk space and ideal for home use.I have purchased four of these printers in the last two years, and only two are still working. The biggest annoyance is that when they fail, you can't find out why - the lights just blink at you. Both of the ones that failed were blinking in the way that indicates "low toner" - even when a new toner was installed.
I purchased the Brother HL1110 printer a year ago and for the price its fine and the print speed is damn fast. However the black is not very solid/bold (OEM original toner) compared to my Xerox CM205 (OEM & generic toners). Have other owners found the same, and do generic toners fix this?
I wouldn't call the print quality on mine outstanding, but at this price point & for the intended use it's absolutely acceptable…maybe yours was a bit dodgy?

I'm current using this generic toner that I've purchased from eBay in my printer, and it working great.
Although it works out cheaper, I don't like using toner refill bottles as it can get messy if you don't know that you're doing.
Cue the arguments about disposable printers… :P
