Bose Companion 20 $299 @ Myer, in Store or Free Delivery. RRP $399

90

about 25% off. been wanting to replace my pc speaker for a while and eyeing for this specific speaker. Went to Myer, Carousel - Cannington WA and saw this on special. Didnt wait any second to rethink and buy this.

Doesnt want to start argument that bose is overrated, expensive, etc. I plugged this at home, played some music and watch movies, very happy with the sound and build quality.

RRP on Bose official website is $399.

Review from Amazon.

I hope this will help someone.

I reckon this is still a lot to pay for pc speakers.

    • That's because these are premium PC speakers.

I disagree. I purchased a $400 pair of studio speakers and they are so much better than the generic speakers sold. So much clarity it's insane. It's much like earbuds though, the free apple/samsung ones are fine but the premium ones are so so much better. But; completely irrelevant to people who don't care too much about audio fidelity.

I spent around $40 for mine and they are awesome !!! I especially love to listen to the Windows start up sound…

        • +1

Yes but you're old and enjoy 48kbps audio

Or you could just buy a pair of book shelf speakers, second hand, higher end gear is perfect, and run a $20 amp off ebay (I do and it's surprisingly good) and have a setup miles ahead of this. I have heard these many times, and their higher end counterparts too.

Cue the Bose fan club negging me.

Because nobody who's interested in this deal would want your alternative.

Bose is a bit like Apple. They make stylish, compact, simple to use products.

You suggest they instead go on Gumtree trawling for some scratched up second hand speakers and an amp they have to wait six weeks to get shipped from China.

Here's the official word on Bose…

"No highs, no lows, must be Bose!"

LOL LOL LOL - how true is that.

I've had so-called "top of the range" Bose systems in my last 2 Mazda cars. They are a mandatory part of the 'luxury pack' that includes leather seats, sunroof, etc.

Anyway, they sound awful, so dull and muddy! The standard stereo system (in lower grade Mazdas) sounds heaps better. I don't know what happened to the treble, but there isn't any. At all.

I find it interesting that Beats headphones have the same reputation, and a similar sound profile?

      • No, people who look at this deal are people keen on PC speakers.

I gave a cheaper and far higher end alternative.

For what its worth, those ebay amps are most likely available in Australia too.
And sure every speaker is scratched up and a mess…

So how are you being helpful? Also I wasn't aware a big requirement for speakers is that they are 'stylish'.

        • Also I wasn't aware a big requirement for speakers is that they are 'stylish'.

          Well, it is.

The sound quality of some pink Hello Kitty speakers might be second-to-none, but I since don't want to look at them all day, I wouldn't buy them.

          @KentT:
People buy speakers for their sound first and foremost. Not their looks.

If you think these plastic rectangular speakers are stylish, when they essentially look like $5 speakers packaged with PCs 25 years ago, good luck to you. If you said the Companion 5's I'd agree, for the looks, albeit they are $600 and you'd be an idiot to buy them.

        • @scuderiarmani:
          Taste varies. As does income.

There are still people who buy a brand new Mercedes, knowing full well they could spend much less and get a five-year-old Commodore with a more powerful engine.

        • @KentT:
If you can afford to look at Bose, you can afford to look at something significantly better. I gave a very common alternative idea, many people recommend what I suggested. There was a recent deal posted on some great hi-fi speakers, no reason you can't find excellent ones new too.

I fully get Bose, however value for money is something it will never be known for. Their Bluetooth docks are widely regarded an exception to that and are quite good for what their price, I have one too.

Dude it's like you took that comment straight from my head! Currently using second hand bookshelf speakers I bought from gumtree ($40) with a cheapo amp and it's amazing.

      • Nice to see someone agrees :)

    Equipment

    • No highs and no lows? it must be Bose :)

  • hey! as I said on the OP, dont start argument about the product. we can discuss it in the forum.

Before I jumped on this I was considering Swan D 1080-IV and Audioengine a2+.

but I got sucked in with Bose's special price as I thought in 1 or 2 years if I decide to sell this, it still retains the value.

dont start argument about the product.

That's what the comments section is for. Discussing the deal and the product and whether it's worth the money or not.
Comments are not just for fanboys. Everyone is allowed to post their opinions…

we can discuss it in the forum.

then you should have posted it in the forums…

I guess this would be the alternative to consider at the moment

Unrelated - but the QC35 is just out! Actually the perfect aviation headphone

    • That's probably the only Bose product that I'd consider buying…

    • Built in battery is a con for me. I've enjoyed popping AAA when QC25s got low.

      • True mate, but at least they play music wired when batteries are flat.
40 hrs (wired time) should be sufficient for most AUS->Europe routes, even with triple or quadruple legs

  • I have a 15 inch laptop that costs less than these speakers. But I guess the only thing that matters in the end is if you're happy with what you get.
