7 x LED Moving Head DMX DJ/Club/Party/Stage Light - approx. $117.37AUD Shipped (normally $135-$299+)

Have been eyeing off similar low-quality, no-name, LED moving head lights for the last few years thinking 'one day' but due to their highish cost ($200+) I never pulled the trigger. I have absolutely no need for a light such as this however I thought having a couple to play around with would be kinda fun plus they could come in handy as extra lights around the house for washing walls with a bold colour or the occasional backyard party to highlight trees/garden/pool or even just dial up a cool/warm white to be used as normal room lighting. Add a cheap smoke machine (or invite a smoker over) and setup a couple of these lights in auto/mirror mode for a crazy DIY nightclub! The uses are far from limitless but pretty fun nevertheless ;) No zoom or gobo ability though, just basic wash effect.

These usually sell for around the $135 mark from Chinese eBayers but can exceed $300 from local eBayers so $117.37 is the lowest current price… but be quick, their sale only lasts for another 7 days giving you just enough time to dream up the justification and ask the 'boss' for approval ;) I jumped on a couple last week just for the heck of it however they only had four available at the time but rechecking this morning that they now have more in stock hence this deal.

Don't believe the advertised LED wattage as it seems similar generic lights can vary their spec from around 7W right up to 15W per LED so to be on the safe side just assume they're 7W LEDs providing a total of 49W. That's still pretty bright though! Also, these lights have a couple of built-in fans so assume that they'll be noisy. Depending on how bad they are and what I'll eventually end up using my lights for I may replace the fans with higher quality versions and/or put a resistor inline to make them run slower & quieter. Really not sure yet.

You can apparently do very basic programming via the push-buttons but they also feature an 'auto' mode where they just pickup audio and move/change colour accordingly. For proper use you will need to control them with a DMX controller. DMX has been the standard for lighting control for decades and is what's built-into lighting desks however you can also get USB to DMX cables with basic software allowing you to control them via computer. Here's the cheapie I bought for around $23: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DMX512-USB-to-DMX-Interface-Adapt… but if it turns out to be crap then I may look at a small desk like this for $65: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DMX-DJ-Lighting-Desk-Controller-C…

Nice little demo of similar (if not identical) lights here but many more available, just search "7 LED Moving Head" on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUIRvJ10M3o

    doesn't look like it's been reduced…

    • Not sure JV, it's not enough of a history to really know as the sale could've been going for the last month. I just based the current price on what I've seen them sell for previously plus the fact that no other eBayer sells them for anything much under $135.

Are you inviting all of us to your Disco?

Nah, was thinking about using them as headlight replacements ;) Bypass the internal 12V Power Supply and run them direct off the high beams circuit then hook up a DMX controller to the steering wheel so you can see around corners… nice!

would it be strong enough hail batman in a pinch?

FWIW I currently have a couple of lights (different from these) that have the auto/microphone mode. The two I have need the sound cranked up a lot for them to actually respond. On my list is getting a dmx controller - preference is to go digital (ie laptop/tablet) and had been thinking about http://www.enttec.com/index.php?main_menu=Products&pn=70303 but then thought might even try http://stevenbreuls.com/2014/03/diy-usb-dmx-controller-for-u… - just to test things out with the laptop. Once I have everything cabled then I may even fork out for something like http://dmxking.com/artnetsacn/edmx1 or even make my own artnet adapter using an arduino/wemos board. Then a few more lights and should be good to go for the Christmas light show… ;-)
