  • Speeds? Who calls a national number these days…..? Are calls to standard mobile numbers included?

    • That usually can be had for $10 more, at least that was the old plan.

  • Unlimited calls exclude mobile numbers international numbers, 13/1300, premium numbers and special services. An additional $300 NBN connection fee may apply to new NBN developments. Offer available for customers of Australia Post stores only. iPrimus Standard Form Of Agreement and Acceptable Use Policy apply to this service, see iPrimus.com.au for details. ADSL/NBN only available in selected areas. See iprimus.com.au for details. Actual speeds may differ depending on various factors including your equipment, the capacity of our systems and the website generally. Strictly for residential use only.

Still seems pricey for what it offer!

The question you should be asking is who uses a landline these days to make calls! :)

I think you guys are actually missing the point… the deal in itself isn't anything to write home about, but it includes NO installation/setup/activation fees AND has no lock-in contract. Also, even though you have to buy the modem, it's my understanding that it isn't locked to the iPrimus broadband network (unlike the Belong deal).

This offer is more targeted to people that need to get a new installation on the cheap (Telsta charge $299 for a new home telephone line). Once the line is installed and activated, simply churn your service to a different ISP if not happy with speed and/or you find a better deal.

  • This legit? So if i pay $99 there will be no activation fee for a phone line? I called up iinet the other day and they wanted $299 just to establish a phone line plus a start up fee of $99. Thanks OP!

    • Yes, seems a little counterintuitive… sign up for a 12 or 24 month contract and pay for installation and activation. Sign up for their month-to-month plan and they waive all charges. Go figure! I confirmed this by telephone this afternoon.

  • Just a heads-up. If you get this package, you have to use the iPrimus router. If you want to use another router, you either need to buy another device for phone calls from iPrimus or lose your ability to make calls.

    • What if I already have a router that has VoIP ports for phone connections!?

      • Can't use it unless it is iPrimus Device, eg old lingo box or OBiHai

      • iPrimus won't give you your VoIP password or settings to configure the router

  • Speed?

The speed of electricity in a 12-gauge copper wire is 299,792,458 meters per second x 0.951 or 285,102,627 meters per second. This is about 280,000,000 meters per second which is not very much different from the speed of electromagnetic waves (light) in vacuum. :)

      25/5

      12/1 is $10 less
      100/40 is $30 more

    • Are you referring to NBN (as Steptoe has assumed) or ADSL?

  • Just been told my area is fttn with max speed of 25. And the web said fttn is sux…

Compared to the rest of Australia, it's not bad.

Compared to the rest of the world, we're a laughing stock.

    • +1

Agreed not the ideal or optimal solution, but I suppose at least you have the option of NBN in your suburb… unlike the majority of Australia. Getting NBN in my neighborhood is a very distant pipe dream (based on the current rollout roadmap)! :)

  • Can anyone confirm a couple of things with this deal? I can't find the info directly via the link.

    1) does the free installation include the $59 fixed line activation fee? 2) does this deal include monthly home line rental (need it for a business)?

I take it that if the answer to 1) is yes and 2) is no, then it's worth churning to another provider after installation, as mentioned above?

    • +1

Yes it covers both the initial activation fee and ongoing line rental. That is what the sales rep confirmed when I spoke to them over the phone earlier today (they weren't even sure themselves so had to put me on hold for 5mins to double-check the T&Cs)!

  • So when I try sign up - it says fibre is not yet available in your area.

Does this mean I can't sign up to ADSL on this deal in the meantime, and then roll-over to NBN when it is ready? I just want the ADSL2+ deal then…

    Help?

    • I haven't tried to sign up online so can't really comment, but I know for sure that the promo does cover ADSL connections (as its all that's available in my area and the deal that was offered to me).

I'd suggest giving the sales team a call (although I'm not sure if the current $50 rebate offer for online signups applies to this offer; if so, then you'd want to complete the order online, or at least get the telephone sales rep to match the offer with an account credit).

  • If you don't care about eh free local calls then prob a good deal.

Sounds like you'd be getting a service connected to their DSLAM, though I suppose could also be on a Telstra DSALM but then if you make a call vai the landline you'd be up for extra costs.

Pretty awesome deal to get a new line installed

  • The TPG offer is $10/month less ($120/year saving) for an identical offering - unlimited data/calls to AU numbers/line rental. Yes there is a 6 month contract but realistically who signs up for a fixed line service for less than that?

Why is paying more for the essentially the same product better?

    • I'm not out to peddle the plan as the latest and greatest… rather my aim was to simply bring it to fellow Ozbargainers attention (especially those that need a brand new connection).

Agreed that the monthly plan with the TPG offer is $10 less per month. However, with TPG you also get slugged:

      • Telephone Line installation fee (up to $299 charged by Telstra. A charge that is normally passed onto the customer by the ISP)

      • Activation fee ($99.95 on the 6mth contract you mentioned)

      • Modem Fee ($99.95 if you need a modem, which in fairness is a similar price to the iPrimus charge)

It really comes down to requirements and what infrastructure is already in place. As previously highlighted, utilising the free installation/setup/activation offer from iPrimus is one way of getting a cheap Internet service up and running if starting from scratch… then you can always churn your service to a cheaper option (such as the TPG plan you highlighted) after just one month (as no lock-in contract)!

      • Iprimus slugs you an activation fee under the auspices of it being a modem charge, so you're still giving them $100 to sign up, a lot of folks have their own modems & wouldn't require that (or the $100 optional TPG one), just like most premises have existing copper wiring installed & don't need to pay $299 for a phone line. The setup costs for both I'd consider equal.

As for churning, most telcos (inc TPG) charge a fee so that is a moot point. TPG are $120/year cheaper than Iprimus, so anyone planning on staying where they are for longer than a month would be better off choosing them.
