    Jeepers, it started!

Are new customers being able to get the sep upgrades because it's q3 financial year and maybe nbn has already rolled out plenty of stuff? or new package pricing?

(my nbn hfc connection was always able to do 1000/50, and I had a free ozbargained One month with aussie broadband for nbn1000/50) back some months or a year plus ago

any RSP, ISP experts can chime in?

      • +16

        What are you asking?

        • +1

sorry I'm a bit special… i probably wrote that with like 2 hrs of sleep

          • +1

@AeymothSky: I had 2hrs of sleep before I read that. I thought I was losing my mind lol. All good mate

      • +2

The ISP purchases 1000/50 from nbn and the ISP turns it into 500/50.

500/50 doesn't officially start until September.

        • Are you sure they're doing it that way or maybe they have some special deal with NBN to get the new tiers? Seems like they'd be losing money just to maybe keep some of the customers after Sept which is a bit of a gamble..

          • @wetsandwich: Any ISP can get 1000/50 and throttle it to 500/50. There is no special deal with Tangerine and nbn.

Yeah Tangerine may be taking a loss for a couple months.

        • -2

everyone is going to be better off come september all of these deals is just price gouging at the moment

    • -5

      The beginning of the end…

    • +3

KFC I like it like that.
HFC I don't' like it like that.

if its not FTTP its not good enough :D

  • Speeds any good/ reliable?

    • -5

      no really

      • +7

I've used tangerine in multiple churns.

        no major issues really.

        • I read their T&C and it didnt mention anything about how 'new' customers are calculated, is it 1 year from last service?

          • @Seaplate: No idea tbh.

I think even churning for 6 mths to another provider and coming back is doable.

tbh all you need to do is have 3or4 consistent providers and churn every 6 mths for around the same price ya know

    • +11

      not terrible, worth a churn

    • +2

When I was with them, my gaming ping (particularly League of Legends at the time) wasn't great, between 50-100 - can't recall exactly. Switched away from them and got my 3 ping back.

      • +2

        wasn't great

Based on this, I probably pass then…

      • +1

        Are you in Sydney ?

        • soemthi something

I'm not sure but maybe I looping thru Melbourne then back to the sydney servers for the game?

i don't know if tangerine works like that tho.
          but could be A reason

        • Yes, Sydney

      • +3

3 ping! Where are you located? and who are you with to achieve that low of a latency?

        • +1

I'm in Sydney, I've gotten that low of a latency with most ISPs, the usual you see around here, Launtel, Superloop, Exetel, etc. It's not unusual for me to have the lowest ping in the server, I've even had 0 ping in CS2 somehow haha.

  • -7

Crazy. My concern as people start downloading Linux distros could the NBN500/50 plans start performing worst than the original NBN100/20 plans.

    • +19

There shouldn't be that much more data being thrown around with Linux distros than there would be if everyone was, say, streaming an HD movie on Netflix. Apparently they're very similar amounts of data, for some reason. 🤔

      • +3

People will start downloading the gold plated Linux distros though. You know, with the addition language s, higher bitrates and sound features

    • +2

Honestly most congestion issues of 2020-2023 are pretty much fixed

    • Come September October those plans will be 1000/100?

    • +2

That's such an oddly specific thing to be worried about. Very few people in reality are downloading Linux distros, they're the same size or smaller than a Netflix movie, they're not a repeated thing and they're not likely to be downloaded simultaneously.

Surely your average Fortnite patch puts more strain on web infrastructure than Linux downloads ever will, even in the "year of the linux desktop".

      • +14

Linux distro is a very long held euphemism for piracy lol

    • +2

LOL Linux distros… MATE IT'S 2025. We dl LLMs and VHDs… the rest arr streamed.

      • It’s actually true… I’m going through so many versions of 34b, 70, and even a 180b

  • +42

Never again. These guys a had a data breach and handled it extremely poorly.

    • +6

How was it handled poorly? Their statement on their response reads like any other corporate

      • +37

The response the legal team put together is standard.

They never explained why after not being a customer for almost a year, why they hoarded all this data.

They never followed up to explain exactly what happened, and what action they were taking to stop it happening again.

They never offered any sort of assistance or compensation for exposing a significant amount of personal information.

I received a legal statement, and that’s it. That is a poor way to handle it IMHO.

        • +28

oh so just like optus, qantas, medibank..

          • +23

@tonyjzx: Someone else doing it too is not an excuse.

Otherwise I could hit you in the face then go punch anyone I like without legal consequence

              • -1

@tonyjzx: How does it say a lot? Maybe the person you are replying to wasn't/isn't affected by Qantas??

You trying to call out someone who is holding a business accountable says a real lot.

              • @tonyjzx: Oh you were saying those other companies need to lift their game? Totally not how I read it. I thought you were saying to just ignore the issue like other businesses did and that's ok.

          • @tonyjzx: Far out that reminds me I’m still waiting to hear from Qatar / Emirates ???

    • My + gmail mailbox registered with these people are receiving spam daily after the breach, I wont deal with the people again

  • Tangerine reputable?

    • +5

Were incompetent verging on untrustworthy when signing my mother up for “fixed wireless”… they seem bargain basement but I’ve never actually used them myself.

      • +3

what did they do / not do?

    • +14

They had no problem in having my data leaked… receiving calls from scammers that know your name and last 4 digits of debit card is quite fkn annoying.

    • I was with them before, speed and customer service was okay. Better than superloop, exetel, mate and dodo, YMMV. However, I was a victim of their data breach after I stopped being a customer with them.

    • +1

They're sister company of More, both owned by Commbank. Tangerine is a no frills NBN and MORE is a little more premium. If you switch between the 2, there's no downtime. They probably share the same customer service agents/tech support.

  • New customers only

Yeah, I just jumped in a month ago…

    • Me too, and just upgraded to FTTP which just became available in my area. Going to try my luck with the sales team to see if they will honour the promo for an existing, don't like my chances though.

      • not likely but keen to know the result. thanks mate

        • +3

Yeh no go, they basically said "but don't worry it will be available to you in September!"

  • -3

Damn signed up then saw the reverts to 500/50 in OCT……wtf

    • +4

      The New 100/20 becomes 500/50

      • I came here to see if 1000 was a typo. Why are they reducing speed when NBN increases??

        • +1

Sweetner to get you on the new deals before a wave of new deals kick in post increase. Hope most don't change it later…

        • +1

This is their price for 100/20. They are upgrading you from 100/20 to 1000/50 for free between now and October, then you revert to the standard speed, which has gone from 100 to 500mbps

  • +2

Why do we need to PM for a referral code?

  • +2

What’s a “new customer”. Is a customer from 12 months ago still new?

      • or today!

  • +4

Been with them for around 7 months, North West MEL, absolute dog shit connection, even worst customer service.

But have to say their price is very competitive.

    • +1

      Are you in an apartment?

Maybe it's not them and could be some other issue with your building or nbn.

  • +4

This is an ok deal for the first 3 months, an average deal for the next 3 months and then a terrible deal after that. In September the 100/20 plan becomes 500/50 across all RSP's.

    • +8

I'd prefer they kept the 100/20 plans and just made them cheaper i.e. $40-$50 at every ISP. :-(

I signed up for the $85 1000/50 plan at Superloop about 6 weeks ago, and the speeds are as advertised, but I think I I'd prefer to save some money and just go back to a cheap 100/20 plan because it's not worth the extra $$$'s for me. I would have churned back to a 100/20 already if I didn't have to stay another 6 weeks to qualify for the $90 cashback from TopCashback.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/909147

      • Yes, I found the higher tiers not worth it and 250 has been enough for my five person household (so not with tangerine). And with the plans coming in September, my biggest limiting factor is going to be my wifi5 mesh.

      • +1

Remember you need to give a months notice when leaving Superloop

    • Why is it just an ok deal for the first 3 months? The cheapest deal I could find atm was exetel for $65pm on 100/25. This is the same price but 10x the speed for 3 months. That seems like a great deal.

      • Exetel is 500/50 $80/m ongoing and for $1/day you can swap to 1000/50. Exetel use CG-NAT which works fine for most users. CG-NAT can cause problems for some users.

      • In September every RSP should be changing their 100/20 plan to 500/50 as NBN Co is upgrading that speed tier free of charge. So in September Exetel will offer the same speed but slightly cheaper. They're basically trying to lock in customers while their offering looks really good, because once all the 100/20 plans convert to 500/50 their offering is pretty much no different to any other deal.

Edit: Forgot to add, Tangerine is a terrible RSP, so you also have to take that in to account.

        • Thats true, Moose mobile already offering $65 for 500 come september.

        • +1

OK so sounds like miss out on super fast for a little while then be on the same speed but a more reliable provider.

  • +1

Just switched from Tangerine, was very happy with them apart from referring multiple people and not receiving anything, and the person that referred me also didn't get anything, so its a pretty good service just a dodgy referral program. Maybe its just inelligible on a deal like this but leaptel always gave me credit for who I referred even when receiving a welcome deal.

    • You have to contact them after each referral
Is active for 2 weeks. Quite annoying.

  • +4

Worst service I have ever used although I am on FTTP. Unstable speed, high ping, drop-outs every now and then. Churned away and then everything is normal.

    • -3

Is that more because of NBN in your location though? Ie. If you switched to another provider, wouldn’t your problems still be the same?

      • Yes and no. They could overload their bandwidth, so you have congestion/drop outs at peak time. Hence why it's cheaper.

  • +10

Signed up in March when they had a 6 month deal. every single month I have been billed incorrectly, every single month I contact their chat and am advised it will be fixed permanently.

I raised a complaint last month after it been wrong 3 or 4 months running, was assigned a case manager and to no surprise, the bill I got this week was wrong again… hopeless.

    • Why don't you leave them?

      • +9

        He's Catholic

        • Then shouldn't they be with Belong ?

          • @jv: Perhaps Dodo would be better for the believers

    • +5

Rightio. I used to be with their mobile mob, and fair dinkum, they kept sending me bills for ages after I'd chucked 'em! Their customer service was an absolute dog's breakfast, the worst ever.

      • +2

Yes, same here their online system was not sufficient and you had to call them to cancel. It took ages and if you don't meet a payment it can impact your credit score if you don't pay them despite wanting to cancel.

  • +22

Thanks to everyone above who has commented.

That’s all I needed to see.

I will NOT be signing up with these guys. It sounds like a terrible experience.

  • +2

Had lots of issues when I was on FTTN with them
    dropouts, slow speeds etc.

Would I have the same experience now I have FTTP? Does it all use the same back end/overhaul etc or would it be different?

    • The backbone will essentially be the same. Your issue with FTTN is the copper. Much higher service faults with copper. Fibre will vastly improve this.

The problem with cheaper service providers is that they overload the bandwidth they have to save on costs, which is passed onto you. The downside is congestion at peak times, which means a slow down in speeds.

  • Can I opt out of CGNAT?

    • +4

      didnt read post clearly

      • They went straight to the comments. Everyone knows that's where the real bargains live.

        • Didn’t read comments/users that posted comments clearly

  • +1

So everyone is saying their service sucks. Can we get some speed tests? It can't be that bad, surely. What's to expect from the 1000/50 plan, real speeds. Let's go, start sharing :)
