  • I can't work out whether this iPhone is network locked to Optus or not… on the T&Cs it says it is, and links to an unlocking page, which upon clicking on the link to find out how much it costs to unlock it.. on that page it says it wouldn't be locked if you're running iOS 7 or later… how bizarre.
Great price. I'll have to ask I guess…

Can't comment on that but my suspicion is it will be locked. However can be easily unlocked by Optus.

Can confirm its unlocked as I bought one for my dad and inserted a Telstra sim, it works. Plus Big W also has the same promotion and you can buy the Big W gift card here and save another 8% bringing it down to $367.08 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/250303

    • All iPhones released after iPhone 4 will be unlocked

      • telstra's iphone 5s is locked

        • My bad, the article I read from Telstra was misleading :p

          Telstra

So when we launched the iPhone 5s and 5c last month, for the first time, we worked with Apple to make sure we were able to sell the handsets already unlocked.

but another article indicates this is only true for phones bought on a plan

All iPhone 5, 5s, 5c, 6, and 6 Plus models on a plan are already unlocked. You can insert another mobile provider’s SIM card.
Unlock your Apple iPhone from Telstra - Post Paid Customers

          OPTUS

On 11 September, 2013 we auto-unlocked all iPhones previously sold by us (including the iPhone 5). Performing an update to iOS 7 or 8 or a restore via iTunes will make sure that your iPhone gets the unlock settings.

          Vodafone/CJ/3

If your iPhone is locked to Vodafone Australia, Crazy John’s or 3 Mobile Australia, you can unlock it for free with a simple back up and restore, or by updating it to iOS 7 or higher.

          Virgin

Apple iPhones sold outright or with a plan through Virgin Mobile are not locked, and can be used with another carrier SIM or whilst overseas.

  • for $6 extra (you can get most of it back with CR) you can get 32gb model and some free gifts

    but no apple warranty

    • 32GB 5S?! They have been out of production for a long time. I suspected they are refurbished, not brand new as advertised.

      • the refurbished one doesn't come in sealed iPhone box. They usually come in white or brown box but you can check with the seller if you are interested, may be they are old stock!

I have seen shops doing shrink wrapping before. And I found this in their description:

Most other sellers supply these obsolete models with stock battery thus having diminished battery performance. Our devices are replaced with new battery so you can enjoy maximum battery potential like it has just been manufactured yesterday! An added plus point to consider if you’re making a comparison.

          I would consider this refurbished…

        • @sylvester328: good point, agree with you now :)

Same price at JB with Telstra. In store only.

    • telstra's iphone 5s is locked, but someone got unlocked for free.

      • I thought they were not locked the prepaid models?

I bought a 5c as a gift and it was unlocked

        • Pretty sure iPhones come unlocked.

        • @sween64: Optus phones come locked for 6 months. U can pay to have it unlocked by OPTUS for $80 and they will give u $80 in credit.

        • @Gavman:

Are you sure? From the Optus unlock website:

IF YOU HAVE AN IPHONE 4 OR HIGHER
If you're already running iOS 7 then your iPhone is already unlocked from the Optus Network. If not, update your device to iOS 7. For help go to Apple's Help & Support Site.

        • @sween64: That's what the folks at OPTUS said. That I needed to take the phone to OPTUS to unlock etc.

        • @Gavman: We're with Optus and my husband bought one of these phones about 6 weeks ago (upgrading from a iPhone 4). Can confirm the phone was already unlocked, took it to Sweden with us a couple of weeks later and had no problems using a local Telia sim there.

I've now bought one myself and finally upgraded from my basic little Nokia phone that's about 6 years ago LOL.

        • @SimbaGirl: I wonder why they would say the phone was locked then and that I had to purchase $80 worth of credit for them to unlock it for me.

        • @Gavman: Sounds like the customer service person you spoke to was either trying to pull a swifty or didn't know what they were talking about with regards to iPhones - I had two completely different answers on LiveChat a couple of months ago when I was first looking at buying this phone. I'm on the My Prepaid Daily $1 plan which has been "grandfathered" so no longer available to switch to or for new customers to take up. I wanted to make sure I could still transfer that plan over to the iPhone - the first LiveChat person I spoke to said no, absolutely NOT, I couldn't transfer that particular plan over and was adamant I would have to change to another prepaid plan.

I tried again later the same day, got someone different on LiveChat who told me that yes, no problem at all, the plan could be transferred over to the new phone (which I confirmed with in-store staff as well) - and this answer turned out to be the correct one.

    • Anyone know if Officeworks with Price Beat 5%?

      • Doubt it. Their model is unlocked and not pre-paid.

        • yeh i just called them and they said just this. Oh well, with the $30 prepaid credit which I can sell it actually works out cheaper from OPTUS

  • Took up this bargain today for the partner.

Excellent value! Especially since Kogan are still selling them for $500 plus.

    • Yeh and no decent warranty
