This price can buy 2.5 redmi note 3 pro which is superb for the price!

    • +4

But it's not blessed by Apple ;)

      • +22

True. Apple fan boy downvoted me :( Note I am using an iphone so don't downvote me pls

    • +3

Yep, the usual AndroidBargain deal: His and hers current decent Android phone for the price of one outdated Iphone.

      • And yet the "outdated" iPhone is still the one actually getting software updates.

        • So what?
Could probably load Win 10 on a Pentium 4 as well.
And why stop at software updates? - can buy new Android hardware(/software) every year and still save money compared to iStuff!

        • -3

@McFly: Huge exaggeration. And when you buy that new Android phone you can't restore anything to it because Android doesn't have a backup system.

        • @MrMcHairyHead: You really should quit while you're behind. Have you even used an Android phone?

        • The outdated iPhone also performs similar to Android phones that sell for this price in benchmarks such as Antutu.

        • +10

@McFly: I've owned an HTC One, an HTC One M8, a Galaxy S6, a Galaxy S7, an LG G2, a Nexus 4, and a Sony Xperia Z5 Compact. I've installed several custom ROMs and kernels. I know about Android.

I'm just not an (profanity) who thinks he's better than anyone because I use Android, and I can recognize that any other phone have advantages too. All that time with Android has taught me that for all its customizability, it just can't compete with the iPhone on hardware integration, touch latency, audio latency, timely software and security updates, the permission system, the backup system, warranty turnaround, messaging, standby battery life, or just plain ease of use.

If you really think someone is an idiot for liking a different phone to you, you're the idiot. Not people who buy the phone that suits them. It's such a sad and petty thing to judge someone for. Nobody thinks you're better or smarter for using Android, they just think YOU think that.

        • +1

          @MrMcHairyHead:

Nothing wrong with what you've said there mate, well done.

I think I was an Apple fanboi once (loved my 3GS for years), then went to the HTC One M8 because I thought Apple had way too much control over what I wanted in my phone and how it was used.

Now, I'm actually thinking about going back!
For all of Android's positives, I still reckon the Apple Store is better and so is the way Music is stored on the phone and easily manipulated via iTunes. I've got all the best amps for the HTC, and all the best music database apps that allow me to still use iTunes, but nothing is as good as going back to the Mrs mobile phone, and seeing how good everything 'just works' on her later model iPhone.

I gave Android a good run, but I'm definitely headed back to Apple within 12 months.

If that labels me a fanboi from Android users who couldn't possibly go back for whatever reasons… then so be it. It's personal preference, and these arguments are pointless.

Both swear they are the best at everything… and both are wrong. But for what I want in a phone, Apple is still king imo.

        • +1

@UFO: I agree Apple is superior because they have control over everything and thus quality control.

I'm on Android at the moment and there is some very minor things that annoy me, which the Iphone does perfectly. The Apple email app is by far the best one on the market and nothing on Android can compare to it :/

        • @MrMcHairyHead: I agree Apple is way overprice for its system..some of the newer droids for this price are amazing coming out!

    • +1

How can a redmi be compared with a iPhone?

      • +9

It can't, this iphone is a hundred years old.

        • Clearly after hundred years old still usable, it's well worth it.

    • That price comparison would be for the shit Redmi 3.. :/

    • BUT Redmi has no 4G band 28

      • +1

        neither iphone 5s

    • +3

Optus has the Oppo F1 for $199.

      • Half the price of this
      • More RAM
      • Bigger battery
      • Full metal shell
      • Higher resolution screen
      • Bigger screen
      • EIGHT vs two core CPU
      • 3GB RAM vs 1GB
      • Expandable storage via MicroSD

I don't want to sound rude, but anyone who buys this over the Oppo, is an idiot.

      • Does anybody know if the Oppos is Dual SIM? They typically say on ebay Dual SIM but is this Optus one dual sim?

        • Are you only going to use it for a year?

      • -3
        • No permission system
        • No backup system
        • No iMessage
        • Few or no software updates
        • Confusing Android bullshit like two SMS apps for no reason.
        • General lagginess of Android
        • Android Wear is garbage

Also the "bigger screen" is a bad thing, not a good thing. Why would I not want to be able to use my phone one handed?

I'll be buying this for my mother and she's not an idiot, and I'm not an idiot.

Maybe you're the idiot for not realising not everybody wants a tablet sized phone that runs shitty Android and they have different priorities to you.

        • +1

So much wrong here it would take too long to go through.

        • -1

@McFly: So, you have no rebuttal. You admit that I'm right!

By the way I'm not arguing one phone is better or worse, I'm arguing that they both have pros and cons and you're not better than anybody for liking Android.

        • @MrMcHairyHead

          Clearly, no idea.

          No permission system

Funny, what is this then? http://community.oppo.com/en/forum.php?mod=oppo_attachment_x…

          No backup system

Google backups: photos, settings, WIFI, installed Apps, Wallpaper.

          No iMessage

This is a good thing. Why would you want to be locked down to a messaging platform that isn't universally available? Use Hangouts, Whatsapp, Skype or the million other options that don't force you to buy expensive hardware for no reason.

          Few or no software updates

Marshmallow ColorOS is coming and also stock ROM. They are being tested currently. Meanwhile, the 5S is 3 years old and will be dropped by Apple soon.

Confusing Android bullshit like two SMS apps for no reason.

Oh heavens, choice, how confusing! But thankfully, the Oppo only comes with one App installed. Don't want to be confused by TWO apps gasp, don't install any more.

          General lagginess of Android

The Oppo is running Lollipop, hence the runtime is ART and no lag.

          Android Wear is garbage

Funny, my Android Wear watch has an always on screen. Shame the Apple watch couldn't even mange this basic feature. Maybe this year their second generation product wont be a BETA test.

Also the "bigger screen" is a bad thing, not a good thing. Why would I not want to be able to use my phone one handed?

5" is not a big screen and certainly usable with one hand.

        • @PainToad: You are a mutant if you can use a 5" phone with one hand.

Not having iMessage is not a good thing. You are grasping at straws here. Obviously having that option is better, and you can still use other apps if you want. Didn't you just say two lines later that having a choice of messaging apps is a good thing?

"the runtime is ART and no lag."

AHAHAHAHAH. "No lag". Ahahahahha. Good one. I can tell you've never touched an iPhone. Also, Lollipop is far, far laggier than KitKat ever was, ART or not.

          "Marshmallow ColorOS is coming."

          Wow, only a year late!

          "Funny, what is this then"

It's a broken link, but it was probably to that half assed attempt at a permission system Android uses in Marshmallow that doesn't work unless the app agrees to it, completely defeating the purpose, or to that older one that was hidden, unsupported, broken, didn't remember your preferences, and broke most apps.

" the 5S is 3 years old and will be dropped by Apple soon."

They are still updating the iPhone 4S and the 5S is still sold new. It will not be dropped soon. No Android phone has had official software updates for as long as the iPhone.

Look, every phone has pros and cons. Can't we just be adults and agree there is no "objectively better" and that people who buy iPhones have legitimate reasons just like Android users?

        • @MrMcHairyHead:

I use my G4 one handed. The smart button layout helps. I had a 5s when they first came out, and the screen was too small for me. I find 4 inch phones are just that slight too small. I would like for Apple to make a compact phone with the same screen to body ratio as the Sony compact phones. 4.5 inch screen on same size body would be a good compromise, it can be done. :) Sony even have front facing speakers on their compact, but they just suck at the other aspects that turn me off them. :P

        • +1

          @MrMcHairyHead:

          You are a mutant

Not a mutant, but may have been a jerk. Sorry.

      • +1

An eight core SoC that loses to the two core SoC in terms performance though. Does the color version of Android make good use of that 3gb of ram? Even the 5s camera is apparently better according to reviews. An unlocked Oppo is around $300 too.

      • Thanks I'm interested now in this OPPO F1, Holey cow those specs looked it up Optus!! I'm of to have a play lol also iphone is only 4inch with 1500 battery yikes!!!!!!! id be charging it up after 4hrs

    • Oh man. Thank you all for reply!

One thing worth noting iPhone can not be locked so other neteork can use this phone too. http://www.optus.com.au/shop/support/answer/how-to-network-u…

    • +5

One more thing ( •_•)>⌐■-■ worth noting is the FBI can help unlock an iPhone 5c.

  • +2

No expandable storage is a killer here.

    • +15

      ummm … it's an iPhone?

      • Reason why I wouldn't move to an iPhone

    • Classic, lol.

  • +26

I would not spend nearly 400$ for a nearly 3 years old phone!!! and it's only 16G.

    • Other people will though.

    • +6

To be fair, it's one of the most reliably good 3 year old phones there is. And still one of the best phones ever for its size.

      • +1

My Nokia 3310 is reliable ;)

    • +2

It's a very good phone that still gets software updates, and 400$ is not that much for a phone. A Galaxy S7 or a new iPhone 6S is nearly triple that price.

  • +16

motorola x style much better :)

    • +7

bought the moto today for $299 ….. would have gotten an iPhone if it was $299 ….. the moto is HUGE ……

not sure why people compare android and apple hardware ……. it's all about the software and what apps you want to use and operating system updates

      • where to get moto for $299, should be a new deal.

    • -1

That's a huge phablet. Not everybody wants that. And people like things like iMessage, a backup system, software updates…

      • +1

Give up on the back up system crap mate, Android's back up system works fine. If you don't know how to use it, just stick with your expensive Apple crap. FFS, you can get a LG G4 for this price, and don't even try to tell me the 5s is in the same ballpark!

        • -1

Android doesn't HAVE a backup system. Not a real one. Your messages and app data don't get backed up. It backs up a couple of settings and your background. It's nothing like the iPhone.

And at least the 5S is a phone and not a huge tablet. That alone is worth something. Plus everything else I mentioned. People use iMessage, they use iCloud backups, they use the permission system, they USE software updates, they use Handoff and Continuity. And they like having an easy local warranty. I sent back an LG phone once - it took them ten weeks to return it. Apple? I walked into the store, said my iPhone wasn't working, and got a new one on the stop.

Why don't you stop being shitty to people because they like a different phone to you? It's just pathetic. There are plenty of good reasons to like the iPhone, there are features it has that Android doesn't, and I say that as an Android user.

        • +1

@MrMcHairyHead: Android does have various applications to backup and they can do backups better than iTunes/iCloud. Unlike Apple, the restore does not force you to upgrade to latest iOS.

As an iPhone user, I don't use iMessage nor iCloud backups. I want to avoid getting locked into all the Apple only services.

Don't twist the fact, while Apple after sales service is great, you get a refurbished iPhone, not a brand new iPhone when there is something wrong. There are issues with Apple's services too. The recall for world travel adapter kit for example, I spent nearly 1 hour on the phone with Apple support because my local Apple store refused to replace the plugs for me on the spot (while I know some stores in NSW replace the entire kit on the spot no question asked). Apple Support were not sure about the correct procedure (that's why it took so long). My friend took 4 weeks to get his iPhone and MacBook Pros' iCloud account unlocked due to the tedious and somewhat inflexible process/procedure from Apple.

As an iPhone 5S owner, the phone screen is too small (for me at least). The record sales of iPhone 6/6+ last year was a good indication that most people want larger screen phones.

        • @MrMcHairyHead: I have no problem with people using iPhone if that's what they like. I am just pointing out that Android does have back up apps that will back up everything on your phone. Also OzBargain is about about getting the best bang for your buck and $399 for a 16GB 5s is not such great value when LG G4 sold for $370 recently. G4 has better camera, better (+ bigger) screen, more RAM, more inbuilt storage (32GB) + expandable storage via micro SD, bigger + removable battery, more 4G bands (faster internet), Knock-on, etc, etc.

  • If I have known of this deal I would not be buying an Android phone a week ago. I am an Android converter by the way.

    • +4

      Phew, that was close!

      • -1

If this one is already looking over the fence you might as well release him to the hounds

        • +1

          Thanks God I'm free.

  • +4

I must say if you want an iPhone this is bloody cheap. Not my cup of tea nymore, in fact I have husbands 5s in the drawer saved for my youngest when she's off to high school. I own a Meizu metal :)

      Cool. Blue charm buddies

      -sent from my Meizu metal

  • +3

    Great phone. Haters gonna hate

  • +19

why people fighting over iPhone or android? windows or mac? it's only a phone/laptop with different os. whichever you like to use then buy it.

    • +2

      Agree completely. Well said!

  • 16GB - meh!
    just too small.

    thanks for post

  • +18

Here at Ozbargain we dont judge the product, we just find the bargains. And this is a bargain for someone who wants an iPhone 5s.

    • +4

Unless of course someone posts an iPhone deal and then every jerk wants to argue which one's better

      • i could take offense to the implication that I'm a jerk but i would just be lying to myself if i did

    • +1

But look how much SMARTER all the haters are because they like Android! They're so superior to us and so much smarter and should feel so validated!

I'm a moron for caring about security, reliability and software updates!

  • -1

If you're only after the phone, there's one on ebay that's a little bit cheaper http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Apple-iPhone-5S-16GB-4G-LTE-S…. I personally wouldn't recommend 16gb though. It's too easy to run out of space on your phone

    • +1

      Not Australian model..

      • Can it be used with Australian phone networks though? What would be the drawback otherwise of not being the Australian model? Thanks

        • Yeah, I'm wondering this too… Would assume it's just the usual warranty / grey stock thing, but please enlighten us otherwise.

        • @Dan83: For the minimal price difference will you consider getting the grey import from an eBay seller

        • @Ahan: Not for that price difference, no.

  • Guys ,

is this network locked or not?
if network locked how much i cost for unlocked that device ?

    Thank you

  • +6

I would have to note that you should still do your figures. Let's say you buy the mobile outright, use the $30 voucher, then switch to Aldi for the $25 plan (unlimited calls/sms plus 2Gb data). That will mean after 24 months you'd have laid out $399-30+(23*25) = $944.

If you got the Optus normal postpaid $40 plan (unlimited calls/sms plus 1Gb data - so less data, but that might not matter to everyone) with the 5s included, it will cost $960 (http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/phones/apple/iphone-5s). If however you already have an Optus service (home broadband) you can get $20/month discount making that $20/month = $480, so close to half what you'd pay if you go the upfront purchase + Aldi route plus you don't have to front up that $399 at the start.

Not quite apples/apples (sorry, couldn't help myself), but you know what I mean.

Personally, my wife wants to go back to the iPhone (she has tried, but simply doesn't like android) - so (as she also doesn't like the larger mobiles) I'm thinking about getting the se - can get the 64Gb version of that on the $40 plan for $55 per month. Less the $20 discount (we have Optus cable), that comes to $35 per month ie $840 for 24 months…… Given that the RRP from Apple for the phone is $829, that's not a bad deal…..

    • Those Aldi plans seem very good. Do you know if they use 4g Telstra?

      • +2

You are not a true oz-bargainer!
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/244102

        • Haha!

          Excellent deal. Might change over.

Sure beats my current $20 a month for around $600+/- of calls, unlimited texts and 1gb data with Telechoice (3G Telstra network).

      • +1

        They absolutely do!

    • +1 for the dad joke: apples/apples

      • Thanks. How did you know I was a dad? ;-)

I do need to listen to my own advice though. Just checked and the fine print is:

Optus NBN, Cable, DSL Direct and Optus Reach plans are eligible as long as these services can be connected at your address. In addition to your eligible mobile phone plan, you need to purchase one of these plans after May 2, 2016 to receive this $20 bundle discount. Customers who purchased one of our broadband plans before this date need to recontract to a new plan to be eligible.
        http://www.optus.com.au/shop/bundles/20-dollar-discount

I am currently on an 'old' plan @ $90/month. The equivalent (http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/home-broadband/plans) now would be the $110 plan plus Fetch entertainment pack so about $125. So for me, if I get the mobile, I'll have to recontract my broadband and pay an extra $35 a month. Less the $20 discount will mean I'm still $15 worse off each month. And the $10 discount no longer appears to be available. Hmmmm. Not impressed.

  • I would go the xperia m4 aqua and with the change load up my wallet.

  • What iOS going to be loaded there.
Phone will be slow and laggy if it loaded with iOS 9

    • not true
in fact, the phone was a lot faster and smoother with iOS9 than with iOS7.
was hesitate in upgrading for a long time, before reading reviews that said otherwise.

      • Really… my experience tell me otherwise.
I do restore from backups all the time tho… not fresh install.

  • I notice apple fans dont write out the specs for this phone…..

Trying to justify spending $400 on an old phone doesn't cut it in this day and age, people want facts.

    • -2

Sheep care not for such things…

      • +3

It is very sad and pathetic that you would sit there insulting people who like a different phone to you.

    • -4

I've noticed Android fans don't write out the lack of features.
How's that not having a backup system going? Or permission system?
How's not having any software updates?

OH WAIT. It's almost like every phone has advantages and disadvantages and everybody should just buy what they like and not be shitheads on the internet over nothing.

      • It is so exciting to read your comments about backup, permissions and updates. Do yourself a favour, google it. I'm 100% sure that google is working from the iPhone.

        • I'm up to date and Android still only has the most half assed implementation of any of those things. Until it works 100% with literally every app, the iPhone is superior in that aspect.

And the update problem still exists.

        • @MrMcHairyHead: Any particular examples? Google probably returned you only half of the search results.

P.S. I actually quite like Apple products. They are far superior in build quality and some design considerations to the majority of android phones. However, your personal arguments are loose and have no ground at all.

        • @MrMcHairyHead: Just go easy. Some like the latest Hyundai while some like old Porsche 911. It is a matter of choice.

  • Available in Space Grey colour only.

  • +4

Its true capacity is 11.5GB NOT 16

    • +2

Not true. It's available free space might be 11.5GB, but capacity most certainly is.
