If this is on auto recharge, does it mean I only pay 12 months as opposed to 13 months for monthly credit/ voucher purchase?

Save having to deal with hopeless Telstra direct, I think this is a good deal to go on their network!

    • +3

No need for autorecharge, it's every 30 days I believe.

      • got it, thanks

        • +3

Yep its every 30 days.. I have used it for the last 2 years without any issue.. 4G a very welcome addition…

Beware of some other carriers who give only 28 days (thus you pay 13 payments per year) But not ALDI :)

      • -5

        CHANGED to 28 days
Funny no mention in the post

    • +2

Thanks. The coverage should be identical to regular Telstra I guess?

      • +3

Good question i want to know as well. Same with direct customers of Telstra? Or slightly inferior?

        • +1

well at the moment in my two sim 3G phone I have an Aldi sim for phone calls and a Telstra sim for data. Every day the Aldi sim often has no signal while the Telstra sim is full signal. maybe this will improve things if I get a 4g phone

        • +11

@hooray: Most dual sim phones have the secondary sim on 2G. so it's hard to compare by looking at the two bars. only real way to compare is to switch which sim is your primary and take note of the differences there.

        • @Mujaji:
Yep too right. I have dual SIM and the 2G has far worse coverage where I am.

        • @hooray: maybe test as per @mujaji suggestions and report back? I'd greatly appreciate the comparison

        • @Mujaji: 2G?
          I thought 3G. Hmmm.

2G is not even worth discussion.

        • @Utopian: The use case for Dual sim phones ATM is really just switching which sim is your primary sim when you want to use data or get better reception while still getting phone calls and sms's from the secondary without having to take your phone apart. But soon all that will become worthless as carriers switch off 2G by the end of the year. But I think there are some phones that do 4g on both trickling onto the market but I haven't looked too much into it, Maybe a Xiaomi and a lenovo does?

      • +2

It's not full Telstra coverage. In capital cities you won't see any difference but some rural areas are not covered

        • Does it not include 4GX?

        • +2

Is this because Telstra wholesale (ie non-telstra sellers) are only giving a certain amount of the Netowork?

Deal-breaker for me if so. Only reason to spend an extra $4 a month (on Vaya small plan) would be for better coverage.

        • @ycon: this is why I transfered from vaya 4G to Aldi 3G before.Aldi's network is more stable, signal strength is better.

        • @ycon:
telstra whole sale has similar coverage as Optus, but better signal quality.

        • @lovbargain:

Agree - especially in regional towns.

  • +6

It's prepay, so auto rechargeable or not as you wish. I think ( not certain) that Aldi is a 30 day plan, not 28.

    Edit: confirmed 30 day expiry.

  • +8

XL plan with unlimited calls and texts, 200 international mins and 5Gb Telstra 4g for $35. Pretty nice price!
Will see what other resellers can do now Telstra have opened up their 4G bands

    • +3

It's got to be good for competition. I still prefer the equivalent Telstra prepaid plan for the recharge credit though. I'm on the $40 plan which is not quite as good as this one but has data rollover, and I can also get Google Play Music, Foxtel Mobile, AFL Live pass and a VPN at no extra cost (free or using recharge credit). And still have recharge credit left over each month to buy international data roaming packs a couple of times a year. That's a lot of added value to me.

      • which plan is that?

        • Freedom Plus! The amount you recharge stays in your 'recharge credit' and keeps rolling over… You don't really need to use your 'recharge credit' because calls, data, sms etc are all included… So the recharge credit continues to build up. You can use it on the Google Play store.

        • +1

@mattlol: I've been thinking about switching from Telstra postpaid to prepaid (contract is up in 2 months). So you're saying that you essentially get $40 Google Play credit a month on top of the calls and data? That's not bad!

        • +3

          @bagger:
Yep, that's exactly right! And as long as you recharge before the expiry date, that $40 (or portion of it remaining if you use for Google Play purchases) will continue to roll over too.

        • @bagger:

I made the same switch, for the reasons in my first post. It seems strange that prepaid is better value than contract but I think it is. I've heard of people amassing $4999 in recharge credit (which I believe is the limit).

        • @bagger: Yes.

        • +1

          @mattlol:
I'm. New to this how do you use the credit in store? Is it linked somehow to your Google play app or through something you download through telstra?

        • @TrafalgarSean:
Yep, through the Google Play app. When the screen comes up after you select a paid app or in-app purchase, it gives you the option of the payment method you'd like to use - by default I think it's usually your credit card, but if you press on the little selection arrow you should be able to select the "Telstra Billing" option. That should be in your list of options but if it's not, just jump on the Telstra 24x7 online chat and they'll be able to fix it up for you.

      • Is it a Telstra VPN service?

        • No. Probably PIA or something that allows you to buy through the play store

        • PIA purchased with recharge credit as cheesecactus correctly guessed.

      • +1

Same, and all in app purchases too. Bought UFC 197 PPV over the weekend with telstra credit, also Netflix announced google play billing through their android app.

      • I wonder if you could use this on an iPhone by just switching your sim card into a cheap Android once a month to use your recharge credit?

    • I wonder if Boost will improve their prices in response.

  • +4

Best thing I did (phone company-wise) was move away from Telstra to Aldi.

They have far better rates on the 1-year expiry. There is also a notable lack of Telstra spam. Though Telstra are persistent: soon after the switch to Aldi I received yet another spam SMS from them (!)

After that, nothing. Ahh sweet peace.

    • Is it possible to actually permanently stop those spam texts?

      • +2

Call them and ask to be removed from all systems + change marketing consent to 'No'.

      • +3

Yes, under Australian law you can direct them not to market to you (even if you are a customer)…and they are legally bound to comply.

        • +1

Yes, under Australian law you can direct them not to market to you (even if you are a customer)…and they are legally bound to comply.

If you've done this you'll know that Telstra keep spamming you again after some time. That's what happened to me. So glad they are gone.

  • So 4G 700 MHz is what you need, according to the coverage map; 1800 MHz looks sparse. I'll keep that in mind for next phone.

    • At least where I live just having band 3 (1800mhz) and band 8 (900mhz) gets you a surprisingly good amount of coverage.

At USYD and around Redfern I am also always on LTE and I get LTE for 50% (Optus) and 75% (Telstra) of my commute home.

      Decent signal in my house.

Of course my next phone will have band 28 (700mhz). 3G is painful sometimes.

  • +1

This is quite decent! Thinking of putting my mum on this. Doesn't use much so the payg option looks better than amaysim - 5c/MB instead of 7.2c/MB, same 12c/min or text, per KB billing too. Everyone in the family uses iPhones so pretty much only data will be consumed. Thanks for posting!

    • -2

Be warned. Aldi count the location services 'ping'to the basestation as 'data' so you will get charged for the minimum data block on a very regular basis unless you turn off location services. https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2320527&…

Amaysim dont, hence why i swapped to them for my occasional use tablet.

      • Pretty sure that is applicable for Google Android phone based. Never had issues with iPhones?

      • +2

Data counted per KB I believe, so not really an issue.

      • This happened to me a few times I left location on, but since they went to per KB charging, I stopped getting charged for those pings completely.

      • +1

If you're going to comment on data policies at least link to something current and not a whirlpool thread from 2014.

I need to update from my Samsung Galaxy SII now that I'm getting 4g

    • +3

I really need to update from my Nokia 3210. I've heard they've got "Snakes 2" now.

  • Thnx

  • +14

    Still no international roaming.

    • Phew!

  • I use their PAYG option for cheapish calls to New Zealand (10c a minute). Full list of rates here

    • +4

      Why? Reasons please.

      • -7

Because it's the new standard pricing structure and as such doesn't have an actual expiry date.

Not saying that this deal must be put into the forums as I haven't read the fine print on whether something like this would actually constitute a deal or not, I'll leave that to the mods.

But to me it's like if the price of 3 litre milk was permanently reduced to $2 and they increased it to be 3.25 litres instead, as a part of the way Coles sells it's milk, would that be a deal? I wouldn't consider it so. Limited supply and/or for a certain period of time would need to be a part of the parameters imo.

        • +13

If Porsche reduced the 911 to $1000 permanently, you would not consider that a deal?
If yes, then this is a deal. If not, then this is not a deal.
In my opinion it is as my definition of deal does not hinge on an expiry date and artificial RRPs.

        • -8

@Lysander: No, because it's just become the everyday price. If it dropped $1000 for one week only, that would be a deal imo. I'm surprised so many people care to neg another person's point of view (opinion) - I never said my view is right for everyone.

        • @Trishool: you replied to a straw man, everyone agrees that $300,000 - $400,000 off a Porsche 911 is a deal. The equivalent would be if Homebrand flour increased the size of their 1kg flour to 1.1kg and switched to using organic wheat or something. Would that be a deal worth posting if the price remained the same?

  • this is great, was looking at the vodafone offer 11GB/unlimited calls/sms/international for $50/m… but to be honest, i will just go on the aldi $35/m plan… that's such great value.

  • These are actually great!

  • +1

Ah hopefully Aldi plans don't get grandfatered? Would like this plan forever.

  • This is awesome !

  • +5

Wow! I think I'm going to switch from my $20 Telechoice plan to this as it gives me 50% more data.

    • +2

That's what I'm contemplating too… you lose the international calls & txts but gain 500mb. Any other differences?

      • Yeah that's true. However, international calls and text don't bother me but it might affect other users. The national calls seems to be better value with 750 minutes whereas Telechoice only had $500 for 99c per minute = 505 minutes (assuming it's just one call which is somewhat unlikely).

      • +1

I can't lose international calls because prince of Nigerian need me l.

  • They're already rolling out to existing customers. Been on for about a week now…

    • +6

My Mrs. has her Aldi sim in her second slot (hold the jokes right there please) so won't get the 4G benefit 😕

      • +5

for how long do I have to hold it in???

        • +5

Until the sim falls out. 😉

  • +2

Im currently on the old Woolworths (Optus 3G) $26 plan that gets you:

    • 5gb data
    • $30 credit
    • my bonus $220
    • Optus money $250 (Optus to Optus)
    • 45 days expiry

However can't use the iPhone hotspot. Do you know if this Aldi plan lets you used the iPhone hotspot (share Internet with other devices)?

    • I used woolies on my old iPhone around 2012 and I somehow managed to create hotspot with it, all I did was to download 'something' and made it work, don't really remember what it was tho, might need jailbreaking…

    • +1

I had that plan for 3 or 4 years. Legendary!

      • I still use this plan! haha

    • I'm still on this plan too. Wondering when Optus will pull the plug on it. It's a great plan value wise but does lack the 4G and the hotspot as you highlighted.

      • I will stick to this wollies plan for longer. I just realised the unused data also rolls over.

      • Doesn't lack tethering on Android.

        • Must be an iPhone thing. Probably is harder for Optus to stop android users using hotspots.

    • Why can't you hotspot?
Myself, my wife and my parents all still use this plan. We all have different phones (android) and can make hotspots.

      • Seems iPhone gets blocked. If I want to setup a personal hot spot. I get an alert popup asking to contact Optus.

        • That's crazy. I had no idea anyone did, or even could, block that. Never noticed because I'm on Android. But yes, I'm also on the woolies plan with no intention of changing, but should it get discontinued I'd jump on the aldi plan right away

    • dont you have that plan now? seems realy good!

      • Best plan but wanted to share my internet with other devices.

    • +2

Me too, I cannot find anything better than this grandfathered plan. I have seen sim cards offered for sale for three figured amounts.

    • +2

Yes I use hotspot often on my iPhone with my iPad. and I'm on Aldimobile. Very happy with it.

  • +7

    BOOST Mobile
    What will you do?

    L $25/month = Unlimited standard calls, unlimited SMS/MMS, 2GB data, on Telstra 4G

    Soooo attractive

what other network will give unlimited calls & sms for $25 or less?
    does anybody know of one?

    • Kogan mobile.

      • vodafone? ill pay the premium to ensure coverage. hate dropping out in carparks/ basements.
Telstra works pretty good even in some elevators.

        damn cheap for Kogan users.

we got some competitive rates here in australia for mobile users now.
        4G!!!

        • Oh yeah, I kept losing data connection on Kogan.

I'm waiting for Kogan to be on Vodafone 4G.

Since Aldi's done this it's hard for them not to follow suit.

    • Vaya, but people say customer service is shocking. I still haven't tried them but all unlimited and 1.5gb internet is damn cheap

      • Optus reseller ey…

Telstra network at a small premium.

Ill prob give aldi a try.

If same as boost mobile or better; Larry :D

        • I am with Vaya and contemplating the same change. Did check the coverage maps though and its not that different.

Havent had any problems with Vaya service but then I search Optus if I have a query getting anything to work.

Actual Telstra coverage is significantly better than either.

        • @DavRo: Great alternative to Vaya. Has anybody transferred away from Vaya before? Headaches?
