@zealmax: i transferred my mum away from Vaya to aldi mobile and it was a very simple process, didnt have to contact Vaya at all. Aldi sim was working within 1 hr of sim activation

        • @zealmax: seems there are negative comments about vaya. I haven't had problems. If I could get cheap full Telstra coverage I would change though.

        • @nrfy:

Did you make sure that you got back your $20 deposit?

        • @DavRo: i always get bs charges from vaya - like dishonor fees for one account, i have two accounts with vaya with the same direct debit details on the one card and one account dishonours…always complain and mention the TIO ombudsman and they will refund. rightly so cos its their own fault anyway, but they will do what they can to charge you bs fees.

    • Probably the only caveat might be i noticed some plans the unlimited calls has some weird exclusions (like 13/18 as an example) which can catch a few people out (small ratio you'd have to think). Might not be the case anymore, i haven't looked at cheapie plans for about a year.

Edit: Actually just had a look at this plan, looks pretty sweet!! Only caveat for me would be the international minutes have a lot of restrictions on them.

    • Sorry, I am confused. Why are you referencing Boost mobile?

    • Amaysim on Optus 4g network.

  • I got the e-mail. 4G is no good to me (no coverage around here), but the plans do include more.

  • anyone know if you can change your number as part of this?

    • +1

Sure, when you activate the sim.

  • -2

My wife is with telstra.. Pretty good so far no complainta..

    • Why the negs for this comment? :/

  • +1

I could never go Aldi Mobile as they do not offer global roaming.

    • +3

voice message "i am on vacation between… if important; send me an email; i will respond as soon as i can."

      whatsapp?

      • +8

My main issue is that many online services like credit cards, bank accounts, etc requires SMS to verify transactions/access

Roaming is very handy, particularly for emergency situations where you need immediate access

        • ^^ Exactly the above as Thrawn mentioned.

The work around would be to port out to a provider that offers before a trip.

        • @pauper:

          Call the bank
Get sms verification changed to email

Banks will find a solution for you if you do not have a mobile phone.

      • +1

Might work when I was 16 and didn't rely on my phone for just casual calls.

        Whatsapp is unprofessional.

I also travel sometimes 5 times a year, all different countries.

        • When im on vacation; id prefer not to pickup my phone.

Good for u to travel 5 times a yr.

Not a fan of paying for picking up calls that can be sorted via email.

Id call them back via the overseas sim that id buy.

        • try World Phone by Norwood Systems, Uses part wifi and majority of call diverted to telephone network = excellent voice quality. Keep an eye out for next couple of months when they will release location based pricing (currently all calls one price)

    • Pick up a local sim so you can get cheaper rates. Set up call forwarding on your Australian number for urgent calls.

      • if you just gonna stay there for just few days roaming is probably cheaper/easier. For ex, TIM in ITALY would cost you 20 euros for the sim with data and stuff. So roaming is the way to go! I used $5/day roaming with vodafone for three days!

    • +1 this is sort of true if you travel frequently! roaming is lot easier and cheaper sometimes

    • Agree. Lack of global roaming is a deal breaker.

  • Any difference buying it now wait for the upgrade and wait for the upgrade buy it then??? My gf wants to switch to this

    • No difference at all.

good plans… If only "L" plan had few international minutes as well.. would have been a market killer… XL isn't too bad either. Cheers!

  • Nice plans, Aldi.
If only I haven't already accumulated over $700 credit on my Telstra prepay, I would switch to Aldi too.
Just have to find some apps, movies, music to purchase on Google Play store…

    • +1

You need to make you own ap and sell it to yourself on the play store for $700 :)

      • +1

Man you are as dodgy as a few of those people…

  • +1

Should I switch from Telechoice to this? $20 plan looks good compare to their 3G plan only 1GB

    • Does your phone do 4G?

    • +1

Telechoice is now 4G also, since both run off the same network.

    • Even compared to Telechoice's latest offering the ALDI plans are very tempting…

  • Any current Aldi users - what are their customer service like? Ease of use?

    • My experience with them in the past has been good, though I'm not with them currently.I'll definitely be switching though.

    • Customer service is atrocious.

      • Never really needed to talk to their support staff, but I can say porting to and out of Aldi was much easier than a certain other MVNO I've dealt with cough e.tel *cough.

  • Optus plan seems better with 11GB of data for $50.

    • +1

      12 month contract….

    • Convenient all in 1 with optus.
      Im thinking of…

Main sim with aldi L (2gb)
Then what ever sim startkit that pops up on special with $30+ value (3gb+) @$10

Capping myself with $35/mth for mobile usage.

    • that one looks really good. but doesn't include Sri Lanka under selected countries :(

  • can i still keep my old number?

    • +1

      Yep, just port it over.

  • do they offer visual voicemail?

    • +1

      Dunno.

    • +3

      Vodafone do.
      Kogan Mobile (Vodafone based) do.

      Optus don't.
      Vaya (Optus based) don't.

Telstra only offer it on their Messagebank Plus package or whatever it's called last I checked.
      Telechoice (Telstra based) don't.

  • Actually what type of calls are not included with the $700 credit?

  • These prices are mighty tempting! Got so much recharge credit built up from Telstra F+ though haha.
On this network, does it show Telstra or Aldi as the network name on your phone?

    • Free advertising for Aldi?

  • does it show Telstra or Aldi as the network name on your phone?

    Aldi.

    • On iPhone it showed Telstra for me

      • Really? Shows Aldi on wife's Android.

        • My iPhone on Kogan Mobile shows 'vodafone AU' it also showed 'Telstra' on Telechoice.
However I've seen my friends iPhones show 'Amaysim' on Amaysim instead of showing 'Optus' so it must be certain carriers setting it.

        • @stickyfingers: with the new 4G sim in, I see Telechoice and not Telstra.

        • @spy: Good to know, I switched off from Telechoice about 4 months ago. I thought I had a 4G SIM though…

Edit: Oh, "new 4G sim" :p

  • I'm still in the process of getting the Optus $40 10GB postpaid deal from a few weeks ago (don't ask, it's been a nightmare process that has been rectified as of tonight. Would I be better off cancelling the sim and going on this Aldi XXL deal or would I be paying $5 more for 3GB less data and that's it. Anything else to take into consideration?

    • +1

You would get full access to Optus network… ALDI offers access to PART of the Telstra network…

      • ALDI offers access to PART of the Telstra network

Really? Is that still the case now they're switching to 4G?

        • +1

hmm i double checked their website and found the following, which is a bit vague…

Medion Australia Pty Ltd. trading as ALDImobile uses part of Telstra’s 3G mobile network. The mobile product of ALDImobile provides a 3G coverage footprint of 98.5% of the Australian Population covering 1.3 million square kilometres. Outside the 3G coverage footprint, customers will revert to 2G coverage and speeds. The combined 2G and 3G footprint covers 98.8% of the Australian population.

From 28th April, the mobile product of ALDImobile provides a combined 4G and 3G coverage footprint of 98.5% and a 4G coverage footprint of 92% of the Australian population covering 1.3 million square kilometres. 3G handsets will only receive 3G coverage.

    • Same issues here, hasn't completed so I'm thinking of canceling if I can.

    • I am in the same boat as you're. It's about three weeks since I made the order and I have been going through hell. Whenever I called Optus some call center operators in the Philippines answered the call and I was losing my mind. About five days ago I was told everything has been fixed now and I'll receive the new SIM ASAP. I am still waiting. If nothing comes before the end of this week then I am moving to this deal. St*ff Optus! I have been with them for over 11 years now. Can't stand their current customer service nightmares.

  • I moved over to telechoice for $38 a month for 6 gigs data ( to be 4g soon ) on telstra network and unlimited calls SMS and 200 mins international
This is a month to month service so if a month is 31 days u get billed the same as a 30 day month

    But it's 12 month contract , I'm fine with it . .

    • Proper Telstra coverage on 700 Mhz ?

      • I believe so , The customer care said it has full coverage of Telstra 4G - so 700 MHz should be included IMO

        • Coober Pedy SA has no reception according to thier maps versus Telstra….

          Aldi
          https://www.aldimobile.com.au/newplans#/overlay/coverage-tw4…

          Telstra
          https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/our-coverage

        • @eagleanthony: My area shows the same coverage on both Aldi and Telstra as 700 MHz … the map specifically says as 700 MHz at Aldi too , so I guess it must be included I guess

Telechoice is still showing 3G map only though

        • Compare the coverage maps in Detailed view for the area between Dalby - Chinchilla - Miles.
Aldi coverage map doesn't show any 4G coverage, yet Telstra map does.

Even 3G is different - Telstra map shows Roma and Mitchell coverage, Aldi shows only Roma.

Is the difference planned against deployed or is there some other difference?

        • @phila63:
The difference is Telstra Wholesale Network Versus Telstra Full Network.
Almost guaranteed that Optus have coverage in Roma, but nowhere else.

        • @scubacoles:

How does Telstra determine what sites/areas/locations are in the Wholesale network compared to Full network?
          - competition or lack thereof?
          - cost to deploy?
          - potential revenue stream?
          - other reasons?

Having to compare coverage over a large area where I plan to travel is time consuming.

Seems like mostly regional areas are not in the Wholesale network.

        • @phila63:
It's pretty much a match to Optus/Vodafone's coverage.
That's the point of the Wholesale Network, to be price competitive to the competition…
Telstra's Full Network covers twice the land area even though the population coverage is only a few extra percentage points higher.

    • +1

oh no! not even that one has sri lanka under selected countries for international credit :(

  • is it true that aldi stores dont tell NANO size sim cards???

    • There's a user comment above from an iPhone user, so I guess not.

    • No.

Two clicks - one on the deal, one on "buy a sim" will reveal "3 sizes available" one of which is nano.

      • yes, was hoping that it would be available in store… 10 business days will get me into another month with my existing provider.

        • Should be a pro-rata cancel if you're on a plan anyway.

        • Ah, I misunderstood the question, sorry for the snarky response.

  • Will this work for unmetered content such as the NRL digital pass?

  • What's happen if we use over 500mb limit? Data is very limited for use in whole month.

    • +1

On amaysim which is also prepaid it just cuts your data off.

    • Critical info sheet says it'll use up the credit at 5c/MB, so if you don't call or text for the whole month you get another 500 MB. So potentially up to 1 GB a month for the $15 pack.

      • Doesn't it use PAYG credit at 5c/MB? This isn't the same as the value pack call credit for calls, as I understand it. This is the base $5 you paid when you got the sim. And when you run out of that your service will be expired until you add more credit.

        • Might have misread as it was a bit ambiguous. It says included credit was $25 so I assume that would be the credit the excess will be deducted from.

  • -1

I hope this makes Optus resellers drop their prices. Though it would be nice to finally be a Telstra member without the social assumptions of me being a cashed-up, reception snob.

  • It seems like Aldimobile has much less coverage than telstra?

What's the minimum phone you need to get the maximum coverage?
    (i'm thinking iphone)

    Aldi
    https://www.aldimobile.com.au/newplans#/overlay/coverage-tw4…

    Telstra
    https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/our-coverage

    • Nexus 5X most likely would be the cheapest 'high-end' phone that is needed for maximum coverage, but any Telstra pre-paid phone would be the minimum

  • Is the unlimited sms and mms applicable to international too?

  • Can you group data on these plans?

  • I'm still using the Telstra Encore $30 recharge. Should I have changed off that ages ago? Anyone know a good reason I shouldn't switch to one of these plans?

    • I'm also on Encore for 2 phones. The reason I stayed is because I can sell off my $30 credit per phone for about $18 per phone, meaning it only costs me $12 a month to run each phone and I get plenty of calls and enough data for my needs. That said, these Aldi offers are way better and cheaper and I wouldn't have to stuff around selling my credit… but the coverage isn't as good on Aldi when you head west.

  • Does ALDI get 4GX access? or just 4G?

    • Both (4G 1800MHz, 4GX 700MHz).

    • +1

both, but I doubt it is full coverage.

  • Game changer!! Is this Telstra wholesale network coverage- or the full Telstra network coverage?

    • +1

Looks like wholesale. see my earlier post…
