How to purchase (new customers)

New customers must purchase a $5 sim card (includes $5 credit) - available online with free postage (allow up to 10 business days) or in store if to avoid the wait. Upon receipt of the sim card, you will then add/purchase one of the above 'value packs' after activating your sim. Note that whilst you can use the $5 credit for PAYG or non included usage (such as international calls), your sim card must retain some credit in order to purchase your monthly value pack (listed above). • Just wondering who has the best plan for data? I'm currently on Optus prepaid, 500mb a day (so 15gb a month), an extra $2 for another 500mb for the day if required. Pretty happy with the data limit, unless someone can point out a better plan for more data…

    • Dataday by VHA, provides the ratio ($3) (2gb) (47hrs) over the least populated metropolitan network. Inexpensive backup to freedom T.

  • I was just reading ALDImobile site about this deal and these 'Value Packs' confused me. On the page, the first sentence of the full plan details says, 'If you have a Pay As You Go plan you may choose to add an ALDImobile L Value Pack.' Is it a requirement to have a PAYG plan in order to get this deal and value packs? Or it's their marketing ways, trying to kill two birds with one stone? I have an Optus prepaid number so can I just order, for example, the L $25/month plan without having anything else, or I have to get a PAYG plan first before I can get it? Can anyone clarify this, please?

You paid $5 for the sim. That $5 constitutes a PAYG plan. Nothing further to pay, just add on L plan for $25. Port you number across (or not) during sim activation.

      • Thanks for the reply, Gershom. So in order for one to have this plan they must first buy a $5 SIM and then only after that can they get the L or whatever other plan(s), is it? I thought when you buy one of their plans they'll send you a free SIM card or something.

So in order for one to have this plan they must first buy a $5 SIM and then only after that can they get the L or whatever other plan(s), is it?

Yep. You can pick up a sim at an Aldi store if there's one near you.

        • @Gershom: Got it now. Ta

mmmmm just bought a $5 sim and didnt get an account number or password?

    • +1

You will be able to have an account and log on when you activate the sim.

Can i keep my current telstra mobile number if i migrate to this service?

    • +1

      absolutely!

  • can you still use 4g 1800mhz in a 4g 700mhz zone, ie, if my phone doesnt have band28 700mhz will it still work just at a slower speed?

    • +1

Short answer, NO. They are completely different frequencies which the phone has to support. If you dont have 700Mhz LTE you will drop to 3G

This is a nice video from ALDIs competition which explains why 700Mhz exists and why it is important for 4G. Note that the 1st January they are talking about is Jan 2015, not 2016:
      https://www.amaysim.com.au/mobile-plans/4g/700mhz

      • Ok thanks, though just 3g would be fine, just some sort of reception. Currently with optus which doesn't get reception at all.

  • Any expiry date for ALDI $5 starter sim?

    • 365 Days for all PAYG credit. The $5 starter sim is basically $5 of credit with a free SIM, or a $5 SIM with bonus credit depending on how you look at it.

      • How long can you keep the $5 starter sim without activating it? I know all Telstra sims have expiry date for activation

  • US Mobile numbers are NOT included in the international minutes :(

    • I must say I am confused by that. US Mobile numbers are exactly the same as landline numbers, so I don't know how Aldi would know which numbers are mobile. Can't help feeling it might be a mistake in their legals.

      • Not being an expert on telco processes but I dare say there's a lot more info transferred between telcos during call establishment than just the destination number. Mobile numbers maybe are flagged as such during this conversation between carriers.

        Then again…it's a legals stuffup/wishlist.

    • Well, that's a deal breaker for me then. I have family members and relatives in the US and one of the main reasons that I was looking forward to switching to one of these plans was to take advantage of the international minutes, particularly the US. What a bummer!

  • Do you get 4g speed if the phone does not have band 700? I am on optus at the moment and using redmi note 3..4g works quite well on optus even without band 700. Thanks

      Is 55Mbps 4G?

IMO the winner deal is still Telstra Freedom Plus $40, purely because you can use that $40 on Android and Windows Phone to pay for apps and content.

  • I just signed on to the pretty good TPG, $20 per month, 4G, unlimited SMS, 1.5G plan, first 6 months are only $10 a shot.
I actually can't recall if it's a contract or not! but that $20 Aldi plan is pretty great, I'd certainly consider it.

I ditched Telechoice 3G 1GB plan, the Telstra 3G network must be oversold or something? because damn, for a Telstra reseller the dropouts were ridiculous, I'm getting a more reliable connection on Voda(TPG) than Telechoice (TLS) crazy

This is overall a good deal though. I'll consider it in 6 months.

EDIT: actually, I dunno about that for me :/

    No 700mhz.

    1.5GB = 1GB + 500MB weekend data :(

Didn't they drop Weekend data bonus for new plans?

ordered two new sim cards on the 19/04/2016… shipped out on 26/04/2016 and still not here… i am located in Sydney metro… soo annoying..

    • Next time just drive down to broadway! :)

    • Given they've had 8,300+ click throughs from this site, they're probably a bit busy at the mo. Not that I want to be an apologist for poor service, a week to ship is just not acceptable service these days.

    • same here - ordered and shipped on the same dates as you - still haven't received them and I'm hoping to port before my billing month ticks over!

      • Did you end up receiving it?
I ordered on 3/5 and still waiting

      • I ordered a nano sim in late April, but after two weeks it still hasn't shipped and was getting close to my billing date, so I cancelled the order, chased down a sim in store (hard to come by!) and trimmed it down instead. The refund was handled without a fuss, though.

  • I know where I am going when my optus plan runs out in 2 months time.

  • +1

My sim card was shipped on the 26th arrived 29th no issues working great.

Just ported from jeenee mobile (optus reseller). Literally took 5 minutes, activated aldi sim at 7pm, got an email at 7.10 saying number has been transferred to Aldi and is ready for you. Then activated data plan, got confirmation instantly.

Transition has been seamless and 10x easier than expected. Also called Aldi to confirm activation (5 min wait), everything was already set.

    • how is the coverage? same as telstra? does your phone have band 700? i am contemplating switching from spintel (optus reseller). Thanks

      • great coverage, heaps better than Optus. I don't have band 700

        • Thanks mate.. Are you getting 4G speeds? My phone does not have band 700 either..

  • Too bad I need international calls to keep in touch with someone in the states. Nevertheless, it is great value for money for Telstra network.

    • +1

You can buy the XL plan which has 200 minutes of international calls, including USA landline (not mobile). This is $35 a month

Just an update with info that might be useful to someone…

Got my SIM card within 3 days. Just activated in less than 3 minutes using my Drivers license. Number ported over from Telstra prepaid in less than 2 minutes. Got instant emails updating me about each step I completed. $5 PAYG credit that comes free was loaded instantly, which I was then able to use to pay toward my "L Value Plan" which means instead of $25 I paid $20 (essentially making my SIM card free). Then after 1 minute of waiting for my account to update, I enabled auto-recharge.

Everything working fine, entire process complete in less than 10 minutes. Very surprised and happy.

If you're in the same (or was in the same) position as me, then I hope your transition was as smooth as mine.

    • I've had the same experience as you. Fully automated, fast and efficient.

    • Yep, mine was the same, think I timed it as minute and a half which was great!

    • Thanks for that - I'm sold.

  • What is not included with the call credit or unlimited standard and national calls?

  • This is the first time I'm using telstra and man is the reception insane. My reception with amaysim/vaya/optus is horrible compared to telstra now. Very happy.
