Good find OP. Hard to get any of these packs once we pass Christmas time.
Have bought all of the Packs from The Gap store QLD :).
Availability of packs seems very limited - any codes for free postage around?

  • +12

Just tastes awful in comparison to 500ml made in Japan version.

    • +7

Can't argue with you there mate - I won't drink the stuff unless it's Japanese brewed - hence it's possible uses are outlined above!

      • How does it matter in which country it was brewed as long as it's the same brand and the brand has strict quality norms across its global facilities? Just being practical, if Merc was manufactured in a 3rd world country, wouldn't everyone still buy it?

        • I recently came back from Vietnam, and had two Asahi next to each other. One purchased from "Aeon" and the other from a street store. The street store had the Chinese one, Aeon had the Japanese one. And there is a definite difference in taste, as well as price.

If anyone was wondering the Aeon cost was 30,000vnd and street had it for 18,000vnd

        • @X4iVaz:

Taste was different.. Was quality different too? If it's true then I won't trust the brand itself and nothing wrong with the country though. Manufacturing plant does what brand or company dictates.

        • @virhlpool: this is a little hard to explain, because it did taste different but I didn't have a problem drinking it. Quality though… I wish I could comment, to me it still tasted like a beer… But I could just be biased.

    • Yeap..But the glass is pretty sweet..So I'd be kinda tempted for that instead of the beer..lol And no idea if the bottle opener is any good or not.

      • pretty expensive for a cheapy glass then.

        • Very true!

    • +3

really ordinary people can taste the difference? tried blind testing ?

      • +6

        taste the difference

No I don't think they could, but it's more the fact that a) I don't trust foodstuffs coming out of China, even if this is from a well known brand and b) I don't agree with paying premium price for a product that's not brewed in it's country of origin - same goes for Heineken, Stella, Carlsberg, etc etc etc

        • +5

I've been to China a few times

I quite like some of their beers

        • +3

I don't trust foodstuffs coming out of China

ErMahGawd U Iz Raysist. bruh! /s

It's funny because a lot of Chinese people don't even trust their own foodstuffs that is why they import so much of their food. After those babies being poisoned I can hardly blame them.

        • @Juddy:

I am not an Asian but do you mean that food products in our supermarkets are always suprior to those in in Chinese supermarkets? I highly doubt if we can generalize this. Haven't tried Chinese food items much but I can say this since I eat the food items from our supermarkets every day ;-).

        • @virhlpool:

My issue is the food safety standards in some parts of the world are either not adhered to or are non-existent. My issue isn't with Chinese people, I am sure they want safe food as much as I would, my issue is with a regulatory body that probably doesn't care enough to ensure its products are safe or that those who breach the guidelines are punished.

I admit I am prejudiced against products from some countries but it has nothing to do with the race of people, it has to do with my perception of how well those country's authorities enforce safety standards. Or are likely to. No country is perfect in that respect but some are no doubt way ahead of others.

        • @Juddy:

I never said your comment expressed anything abt people from there. But, you are assuming that all food producers in our country are adhering to the regulations and the most in China don't. This is a big assumption and can be absolutely wrong. That's what I am pointing to.

        • @virhlpool:

But, you are assuming that all food producers in our country are adhering to the regulations and the most in China don't.

No country is perfect in that respect but some are no doubt way ahead of others.

So, no, I wasn't assuming anything of the sort.

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_safety_incidents_in_China

          compared to the non-existent

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_safety_incidents_in_Austr…

As I said, some countries are way worse at food safety than others. That's not an 'opinion I could be wrong about' it is something I can corroborate with facts.

        • @Juddy: So just because it's not on Wikipedia or internet, do you think that our food producers follow all the regulations?

On a separate note, I used to believe that all out restaurants follow very strict food quality and kitchen regulations until I happened to step into the kitches of a few restaurants. A lot of our beliefs remain on papers more often than not.

        • @virhlpool:

So just because it's not on Wikipedia or internet, do you think that our food producers follow all the regulations?

It never ceases to amaze me how good, or at least insistent, some people are at forcing words into other peoples' mouths. I've pointed out at least twice that I think no producers are perfect yet you keep trying to frame my point as if I am saying "Western producers are paragons of safety while non-Westerners are manufacturing toxic poisons and exporting them worldwide."

Obviously this has been a pointless exchange.

      • Probably just generalizing and cheap shots at the whole vast country of China's food and drinks industry lol.

        • +2

There is no doubt China does produce some quality goods, but there is a reason they purchase vitamins. Baby powder and luxury goods overseas.

        • +3

Take it from someone who has lived in China for years, it's not a cheap shot. The vast food and drinks industry of China should be avoided if at all possible.

        • Like Oreos? 😉

        • @FatBlanket: Can you elaborate, why? I respect your views though since you have lived there.

      • I can definitely taste the difference between the two, blind folded or not.

    • Thanks for clearing this up for me! I had this in Japan back in 2009 and loved it. Had it last year for the first time since back in Australia and thought it tasted like dog piss. I thought someone had switched my tongue. But alas it must of been the Chinese version.

  • +1

Bought one for the glass and bottle opener. Been using the glass as my main glass, even with Super Dry in it most nights. ;)

The bottle opener is really heavy. More like a ninja blade.

  • Highgate Cellars on glenhuntly road have 6 packs of the 500ml cans for $25 at the moment for the japan made stuff.

    • +6

      $16 at dans

    • +4

Dan Murphy's members can get the 6 pack for $16.

      OzBargain

      • Nice time to stock up for winter :)

        • Use by date is September on the ones I bought.

        • @onetwothree: First ones I bought were July useby, just bought more yesterday and they are October.

  • no stock anywhere in a million km radius - is anyone else finding this ?

    • +1

979 clicks & counting - you might be a bit late to the party mate.

      • I see. I just put 2 in the cart (online) to check the click and collect but clicked on shipping by mistake - it says FREE. I thought Dan Murphys was the minimum $100 type of store before you get free shipping.
Review on the website says stock has 9 days until it expires and packaging was soiled…..that sounds awful.

  • The beer is brewed in China, so it would make a good cheap gift for someone you don't really like

OP seems to have denied all Chinese made alcohol, what an exceptional beer taster! LMAO.

    • You can't call yourself a proper beer taster unless you've tried "replica" Tsingtao - it's actually not too bad but I imagine regular consumption might not be so healthy (I've also tried "replica" Marlboros - same result).

As for other Chinese made alcohol, you can keep the huangjiu and baijiu, that stuff is FOUL.

      • +2

As a novice baijiu drinker, I quite enjoy the forced consumption of it around chinese friends, and the resulting shuddering for 5 minutes after consumption

        • Always have beer (even if it is Chinese beer) to chase with!!

        • @Sir Casm: I'd rather nothing over warm yanjing. Ew

      • There is a great beer in China called Snow. I don't like Tsingtao at all.

  • The beer is brewed in China, so it would make a good cheap gift for someone you don't really like , OP list your address I will post a few to you.

    • +10

Send them to your mum's place, I'll pick 'em up later ;-)

      • -4

In that case, go to your grandma's , same address,

    • -6

Oh look another "it's from China therefore it's cheap" word of wisdom without any taste testing.

You brew a better beer you twat.

  • They didn't have any at Top Ryde around 6:30pm. Guessing it's clearance in certain stores that have stock.

  • +2

Bought 2. Just for the glasses… The bottle opener looks like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Asahi-Bar-Blade-Bottle-Opener/dp/B0…

    • What does the glass look like?

    • +2

Update: Dans called and said they dont have stock of the gift packs and they will refund my order and give me two asahi six packs and two random glasses all FREE OF CHARGE. Pretty darn happy with that. I didnt know Dans did cool stuff like this.

      • Update: Tried the Chinese Asahi for first time, tastes closer to VB than the Japanese Asahi.

      • Whaaat? They called me and said the same thing, EXCEPT the guy I spoke to only offered me a refund OR an exchange for a similarly-priced product.. :( pretty disappointing, really, to not be offered anything for the inconvenience. Is there a DM rep on Ozbargain at all?

  • I drink the beer out of the 500mL cans so I need neither the glass nor the bottle opener. ;)

  • -4

I don't trust foodstuffs from China, either, but because of radioactive from Fukushima, I am tring to avoid to have foods(including fishes) from Japan. I will drop by Dan for this offer this afternoon.

    • Didi you make a joke or a confusing statement?

  • Beer always good though..
