Wow! I'd buy that if I had money!

With that attitude you will never have any money. You can't afford not to buy at least two of these drives and save hundreds on the local prices.

  • +1

    Tempting…

  • +1

Amazing price, but not quite sold on Transcend name.

    • This one is a well rated SSD, recommended by Anandtech.

      http://www.anandtech.com/show/8792/transcend-ssd370-128gb-25…

      • +1

That looks solely on performance. Performance isn't what I'm worried about, it's the stability of the firmware.

        • Actually I just realised that I sent you the link to the 370. This one is the 220. It looks exactly the same. But the Transcend 370 is pretty value for money and said to be reliable.

        • +2

@KaTst3R: That one is an MLC drive, this is TLC (Cheaper and less long lived type of NAND, but not necessarily terrible)

        • @Gmetal:

Yea I know. Im just saying I got fooled just by looking at the picture and thought that it was the more popular 370.

        • +1

You should be more concerned of the quality of the NAND memory and controller. What good is firmware if the NAND is rubbish.

        • samsung Eco 850 is tlc and people seem to rave about it ….. seems they have thicker junctions on tlc so they can get the longevity up …. firmware …. yeah now it's down to not just model but controller and revision.

    • Been around forever. Dirt cheap deal. Is it a trust/quality concern?

    • do you know that this is the brand that Apple use for their SSDs ;)

  • +1

Save money and buy buy buy

  • CMIIW but I think this is the cheapest SSD per GB ever posted???

  • I'd buy this except I already have 2 SSDs

  • I bought 3,..stupid accidental one click.

    • Just cancel the order. Amazon cancelation process is simple as they come

      • +1

        It's ok, I actually wanted to buy 5 ;)

        • -1

          Then upvote the deal.

          My work here is done.

    • so you saved 3 times as much ……

  • Rats…You guys made me buy one. Now you are going to have to help me upgrade my laptop.
I need to know the best way of reinstalling my Window.

    • You can use the backup/restore option in Windows. Works well.

      • I want to do a clean install on the SSD.

I have a T520. but I have lost the recovery partition when I upgraded it to Win10 (or prior I cannot recall. It is just not there anymore.

Basically I do not want to pay for a Win10 as I already have one.

        • Use a free disk imaging tool like Acronis or Easeus, won't be a clean install though

        • +1

You will need to use some removable media then.

It's possible that you could clone just the recovery partition from the old hard drive to new. That way you can do a fresh install of Windows with the correct drivers for things like your trackpad or webcam.

I never liked that approach though as it will install all the bloatware, and possibly more that was different from the factory image. I've had that happen in the past and it was a joke.

If it was me, I'd download a fresh Windows 10 disc image from the Microsoft website and install that on to the new hard drive using a DVD or USB drive. But before that I would download all the relevant drivers so that they are ready to go on another USB stick.

There's a small possibility that it won't play nice, but it will give you the freshest start possible with the most performance. If it doesn't play nice then you can format the new SSD and try the other methods.

        • Download an win 10 iso. https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10I…

I recommend you make a bootable usb to install from

You will need your win 10 serial number

I would go into more detail but there is already a stack of information. Just google it

        • @4agte:

Thanks. I will do it that way. Now to find my win10 serial#
This is a 5 yr old laptop with win8 that I upgraded.

Google is my friend. let me ask him….

        • +1

Just download the Windows 10 images from Microsoft. It's free and if your laptop has already been activated with Win 10, it will detect that and activate.

        • @samcro:

          Even easier. Thanks guys.
My product key says: Windows 10 on this device is activated with digital entitlement

        • @BuyoTheCat: If that's the case, your activation is now tied to the hardware (motherboard, usually) so you won't need a product key to reactivate.

        • +1

          @BuyoTheCat:

To get the serial from the machine follow the method - Finding the Windows Key Without Any Software Advanced Users Only. While it is marked advanced, it is actually quite basic.

Or download a program like Piriform Speccy. It also lists Windows Serial Number (same as CD key). Also lists helpful info for your pc in case you have any rare driver issues.

EDIT: See above you have resolved the serial issue. Good luck with the install.

        • If you upgraded free to Win10 then your serial number should be already recorded on their system, so in theory you won't need to worry about serial numbers..All you should need to do is get a win10 iso and do a clean install.

          1. Make note of what version of win10 you have.. eg Win10 Home ? Win10 Pro ? 64 bit ? 32 bit?
            a. To do this Start->About your PC->About

          2.https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10
Use the media creation tool to create an Iso

          1. Visit http://support.lenovo.com/au/en/products/laptops-and-netbook…
and download at minimum the LAN drivers, wifi drivers and USB3 drivers.. back them up onto a usb2 or lower based drive.

Back up your data ,..etc .. then install..

        • @Aneurism:

Thanks guys, I know what to investigate now. Thanks for the pointers.

        • if Windows 10 was installed on the machine already, after the new install you can activate ….. seems it gets the number from the bios and remembers it.

        • -1

yep ….. when I swapped my motherboard, it just asked me if hardware changes were made, logged into my Microsoft account and all was good ….. love Windows 10.

        • DO what I did, just do a fresh install and when the set up fails to acknowledge your key code, do a live chat with MS tell them what happened and their supervisor gave me a new key code, whole process took about 10-15 minutes.

    • use a licensed tradie and go with double glazing

      • too much trouble. I'll just use DOS. No need for Windows.

      • or use a fake tradie like the election ads …. love his gold bracelet.

  • +3

The controller is a SM2256, which is not exactly not the best. http://www.anandtech.com/show/9165/silicon-motion-sm2256-ref…

    • That's budget SSD and brand for you ;)

    • +1

      Thanks. Got that one.

      • Good choice.

  • Should mention that this is the SSD220S model.

  • How's this vs Samsung? Sandisk? OCZ? Intel?

    • -1

I have a very old 128GB Toshiba SSD (1st gen) and still going strong

  • Will this be good for xbox one for installed games?

    • yes if you use an external enclosure ….. Very hard to swap the built in drive for an SSD on an Xbox one.

  • I ordered one yesterday. Thanks for the above info.

  • This is showing up as $119.99 USD now (around $160 AUD).

  • Thanks OP. I just received it.
