NetGear Arlo Smart Home Security System 2x Cameras $380, 3x Cameras $519.20 on eBay

Been looking into this one for a while, though it's not the cheapest it's ever been but it's quite good. Review here. Only downside is that the cameras use 4x CR123 batteries each, rechargeable ones available on eBay for about $15-25 for 8. Battery life is supposedly quite good, there's an issue with them when outdoors/under the sun the battery gets drained really quick, not sure if this has been fixed.

Good find, cheaper than the previous post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/253934 596+50 store credit @ goodguys

    • I have these and whilst they're good…this link is concerning.

  • I've been using these cameras for over 6 months now, happy to answer any questions if anyone has them - I found it hard to find good information on them before purchasing myself, took the risk and I'm glad I did.

    • How is the battery life really? I am thinking about buying 8x rechargeable, I can only find the charger in 4 battery slots, the big 8 slot ones I saw on aliexpress but haven't gone and bought any. How do you manage your power?

      • Just to clarify I use mine on a schedule, which is something along the lines of:

        Front Door - Always on
Back Yard - On from 10PM to 6AM
        Back Door - 10PM to 6AM

I do this because we have dogs and they just end up setting off the cameras all day and killing the battery.

I find I get about 3-4 months from good batteries using this, and I usually record at medium quality, although cheaper batteries don't tend to last as long. I do want to invest in some rechargeable batteries one day as I reckon this would be the way to go. I've also read that cold weather can affect battery life but I haven't experienced that yet (and it's 3 degrees here right now)

It's a good set up really and I have used it to provide evidence to the Police as well, the only real downside for me is there is no audio, but I can live with that, and it's great to be able to move the cameras around so easily if you need/want to (I put my inside the home when we go on holiday)

For the two camera system, I would buy the one camera kit and the single camera.

    Single kit = $265
    Single camera = $190
    Total = $455
    With 20% off = $364

Good one, just added another two, bought the price to $515.92

    • Nice find! I was dumb and just bought the 2 camera kit. I grabbed the USB though, the powerboard seems good too!

  • I'm waiting a generation or two

    • But what happens if they rob you in the mean time?

      • I have adequate protection currently and more than adequate insurance, just no cameras 😀

  • So how good do these work at night? Also I've read they won't work with rechargeable batteries?

    • I currently have 4 cameras running on Nitecore RCR123 rechargeable and they work just fine. Rechargeables don't give you as long between charges as the single use batteries (about 2½ months vs 6 months - depending on usage), but they work just fine.

The only things to be careful of with rechargeables is that some of protected batteries (a must have IMO) are a bit long at around 36mm, and the length limit to fit in the camera is about 35mm. The cheap GTL etc batteries from China that claim to be 2300mAh are not protected, and the capacity is vastly over-rated as even the best 16340 batteries are around 650-700mAh. I would guess that the cheap rechargables referred to above are these, and best to avoid them.

There is a 46 page thread on the Netgear Arlo forum that discusses rechargeble batteries at length - http://community.netgear.com/t5/Buying-Options-Tips/Recharge…

If you want constant recording then a battery powered device may not be the best choice anyway. The idea with these is that you don't have to record continuous video that not many will watch anyway - it only records when something is going on.
