MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 $464 AUD Delivered from Newegg.com

460

Hi everyone,

In the search for a GPU for myself, I've come across what seems to be a deal on the GTX 980.

  • Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980
  • Core Clock: 1178/1279MHz Base/Boost Clock vs 1126/1216MHz for the reference card
  • Video Memory: 4GB GDDR5
  • Memory Clock: 7010 MHz
  • Memory Interface: 256-bit
  • Bus: PCI-Express 3.0 x16
  • Thermal: Fan sink (Dual Fans)

They also have the GTX 980 4GD5T OCV1 (1154/1252 MHz Base/Boost Clock) for $458 shipped

Cheapest Aus price: $599+ shipping at MSY

Yet to pull the trigger, as my wallet is leaning towards lyl's $324 GTX970 or an RX 480 8GB when/if the smoke settles about its power consumption issues! Meanwhile I can live with Intel HD 4600 (till I make up my mind)

Who would buy it if is possible to buy a rx480 (10% less power without overclock) for a better price.

    • Those reported power issues might be overblown, but it's safer to wait and see. (In short, the card is pulling >150W, and it's only being supplied 75 (PCIe) + 75 (6-pin plug).)

      • Just to clarify for anyone reading:

8GB variant only is causing bluescreens on older cheap motherboards, AMD are releasing a driver to fix it shortly.

I would always recommend waiting though for non-reference model.

        • Some sources say with the driver fix (if it is fixable by driver) comes a loss of performance, how much reduction is yet to be announced. This might detract from the value of this card.

        • +3

          @ramezemar:

          Definitely would do.

Got to wait for the non-reference model reviews before committing to the RX 480.

        • Some hoped the performance close to 980, but it is closer to 970.

^ This, They perform between a 970 and a 970 SC (Super clocked), but are out performed by the 970 SSC (Super Super Clocked or something).

That being said, the RX 480 probably doesn't have that half gb of VRAM loss seen in some 970's and have more VRAM although they do currently have that power issue people are talking about. Personally I don't understand how a driver will help (significantly) with the power draw issue from the mobo or at least without hindering performance by a lot

        • @ramezemar: got the driver. performance got better…

      • So only option is wait 7th june when likely nvidia will show up the 1060gtx.

      • +3

Yes, wait for GTX 1060 to be released and non-reference RX 480 cards to be released, before you even consider this older GTX 980 card.

        • It was a tough time to take the plunge and build a PC, as I expect major price gouging with the 1060 when it's released too :/

    • Because the 480 is 970 performance, not 980?

      • +3

Yes. The reality of RX 480 is a bit of a disappointment compared to some hypes it generated.
Some hoped the performance close to 980, but it is closer to 970.
Some hoped the power consumption to be low as AMD claimed, but it actually draws more power than claimed.
Some hoped the price to be around $300-$350, but the majority of prices are around $400-$450 (XFX brand is more reasonable at $380).

        • +3

AMD GPU hype has been overrated for the past handful of generations

      • In DX11 yes.. in DX12 its faster then 980

    • someone who already has one and wants 2 in SLI because it beats a GTX 1080, in which case this is a great deal.

    • +3

Who would buy it if is possible to buy a rx480 (10% less power without overclock) for a better price.

I don't get this whole "who would buy it" type of posts, there are always plenty of reasons why someone might purchase something. A few that I can think of right now is that

      1) This is actually better performing than an RX480.
      2) Where can you even find RX480 stock?
      3) Some might already have one GTX980 and want another one for SLI
      4) Some people are invested in Nvidia technology such as GSync, Shadowplay or streaming to Shield
      5) Some, like myself, need to use CUDA because support for OpenCL is pretty rubbish with some software

      …so on and so forth.

The RX480 is a good value option, but that doesn't mean that overnight the GTX980 has become a crap card. It's still a very decent performing card and at around $450-ish, it's still pretty good value and unless the GTX1070 prices drop soon, it's not going to change.

      • +1

ONLY IN DX11 the RX 480 is faster in DX12 … and has double the ram so it will also be more future proof

When the GTX 680 came out it was faster then a HD7970… fast forward to today and in new games the 680 is 30% slower! same with the GTX 780 it was faster VS its direct competitor the R9 290 but now its way slower… lol AMD cards are always better in the long run as history shows us

Without async compute .. an important(HARDWARE) feature of DX12 the GTX970, 980, 980ti, GTX 1060, 1070, 1080 will under perform with every new game coming out.

        • yeah in like 2 years.. by then this card is useless.

  • +7

IMO it's better to future-proof your rig and get a newer card.

    • Agreed. I am finally going to update from a GTX 580.

  • +3

GTX 1060 is supposed to be coming out in a few weeks, it should perform and cost similarly to this.

    • +5

I'm actually surprised that people are looking forward to the 1060. I remember the same level of enthusiasm to find that the GTX960 was barely faster than the 760, and on some benchmarks, even slower. Traditionally, the X60 series was basically performance equal to the flagship of the previous generation (e.g.760 was almost equal to 680, 660 was almost equal to 580), but the last iteration saw it perform only similarly to a GTX760 (a good 40% slower than the previous flagship, the 780).

We basically got scrooged out of the performance by Nvidia, bought it by default because it used less power than AMD's cards (despite not performing anywhere near the same dollar amount spent on AMD). Why would Nvidia ever bother giving us supreme value for money when we keep throwing money at them, regardless of how good the competition is at the same level?

      • I am sure there are people looking for performance/price card that fits in between the new gen RX 480 and GTX 1070, so the upcoming GTX 1060 is probably the card they want. We'll see.

        • It's always fun to see how these cards are priced vs how good they perform, especially if you're in no rush to buy one :) The GTX 1060 will hopefully benchmark as well as the 980, while boasting better VR compatibility and power efficiency. However as holisticboy mentioned, the price might not reflect good value simply because NVIDIA can get away with it.

        • the 1060 sits behind the RX 480 in DX12.. thats important to remember

      • +1

Problem with 760 > 960 is that they were both 28nm GPUs. 1060 is 16nm, every time there has been huge gains when newer nodes were introduced. 1080 and 1070 I think are about 80% faster than the cards they were replacing so I'd expect the same with the 1060 (also they're priced a little higher so that should apply here too). Another indication is that the 1060 like previous generations will basically be the chip used in the 1080 but cut in half which should put it near 980 levels.

        Holistic asks:

Why would Nvidia ever bother giving us supreme value for money when we keep throwing money at them, regardless of how good the competition is at the same level?

        ANSWER:
Because the competition cards suck and overheat.

        • I see you missed the point, despite the fact you quoted the key point. Amd cards are no worse then nvidia cards. Your comment is nothing but fanboy marketing.

But go on, encourage nvidia to make lousy products, or lie to you (3.5GB ram…). This is why they don't have to try… and this is why we're still paying over a thousand for flagship cards.

        • -1

          @holisticboy:

You do know that when AMD released the last series of cards 3xx

They cheated in their drivers to make benchmarks look better than they were…

AMD are a poor cousin to Nvidia and AMD are going bankrupt

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: yeah both companies have done that eh, it's not new, it's been happening for well over ten years. Phone companies do that too, and so do certain video card companies (regardless if nvidia or AMD). Bad practices though either way.

    • There's speculation that there might be a GTX 1050 or a ti variant following up with the GTX 1060.

    • no async compute no thank you … GTX 1060 will be 30% slower then RX 480 3 years from now. (a DX12 world) just like GTX 680 is 30% slower then HD7970 today!

Even though the GTX 680 was 15% FASTER!! when it first came out.

If you're gaming at 1080p - the 970 is a great card to get and save a few $. If you're gaming at 1440p you might want to consider the GTX980 here which is a good price (this is close to the price they are selling for used at the moment!), or, if you can, wait for the GTX1060 and RX480 non-reference cards to see what they offer.

    • I figured it was a good price, but I have my fingers crossed for decent non-reference RX 480! Otherwise probably I'll fork out for a 1060/1070 and change my surname to Burger so I can save money on groceries :p

  • -1

Wouldn't the GTX 970 for AU$324 be a better deal? Isn't it only about 15% slower than the 980? www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255639

    • +4

It won't be a better deal when you notice that more than 10% performance difference though ;)

    • +1

Personally I agree, I ever mentioned the same post in my description! However, the 980 is a better performing card overall and the discrepancies between different games can be up to 20fps greater in favour of the 980. When that's the difference between 24fps and 32fps such as with Witcher 3, it depends on how each person sees a better deal.

    • It depends on what you want from the card. Performance is ofcourse the most important which everyone seems to be talking about.
I personally went for the 970 because it has 2x DVI inputs, smaller size(?) and will still run most games today on high settings. 970 is the perfect card for my needs and for future monitor upgrades going either HDMI or Displayport.

  • prices are going down so much, its tantamount to the power of the new nvideo 10x serious, they are just awsome, AMD, better have something pretty bloody fierce to hit back with, or they will beleft behind like Intel did to their CPU line ups.

    • +1

The old generation stock is being cleared, there's really nothing new about this.

      • thats a generally broad statement which is true, but how quick it occurs and by how much is dependant, on the improvements of the new generations.

the 1070 comes with 8gb & out performs the 980 which is a pretty massive jump in performance.

        • But 1070 is also more expensive than 980 now, so performance and price even out.

        • @edfoo:

it dosnt matter, its new, its better, people will pay the small difference.

        • +1

@T1OOO: About $200 price difference. Not exactly a small difference in proportion to the price of this 980 card.

        • +1

          @edfoo:

590 for the 1070 vs 464. Is about $126. Worth it imo.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/253024

        • Kicking myself that I missed this great deal. Since expiring, that one is back up to close to $700 AUD. Cheapest right now is about $644 AUD for the EVGA GTX 1070

    • -3

AMD graphics fell behind Nvidia about 5 years ago - in the same way AMD CPU's suck against Intel.

AMD will never catch up in either arena…

      • +4

        Okay, reign it in fanboy

      • Amd gave ya more ram and were cheaper. They had that going for them. Now ram is the same. They won't push beyond 8gb for a long time.

    • Vega 10 -
4096 cores with HBM2 .. at 11 TFLOPS and 1TB per second bandwidth

      Vega 11 -

      GTX 1080
2560 cores with GDDR5X at 8.9 TFLOPS 320GB per second bandwidth

The GTX 1080 is dead in the water and the two Vega GPU's are going to compete with GTX 1080Ti and Titan 2

    • $534 AUD plus shipping (or $578 SHIPPED) for one ZOTAC GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB AMP! Omega

  • +1

lol sucks that I paid $600 second hand for a 980 in November last year, ah well It has been fun to have 2560x1440 on ultra on all games now :)

    • +4

Well if it helps, you paid ~$150 for a solid 9 months of gaming, that's a price of $17 per month. That's actually pretty damn solid for the entertainment you get given that a single movie ticket is around that much. Sucks that prices drop and technology moves on, but I think you always get your money's worth back in entertainment.

      • +1

I 100% agree with paulsterio, the price will almost always drop, but once you buy a card that good and spend hours immersed in glorious 1440p gaming, it's worth it!

  • This is a very tempting offer. I'm using a 3GB 280X atm and want to upgrade soon.

    • In terms of a deal (price and performance), this card has it. I might personally hold off till we hear news of the 1060, hoping that it offers decent value, or leads to a price drop in other cards (specifically the 980 Ti and 1070).
