:( out of stock from gearbest.. bummer

      • This camera normally sells for AU$40 and is regularly posted on OzBargain. Maybe try some of the other websites.

        • Gearbest should be banned. Avoid them.

At this point of time it is still a deal. The other websites who sell this product cheaper don't have it in stock.

    No deal. eBay is cheaper

Is this the Chinese or International version?
Because if it's the former, then you'll have to dig out old firmware & flash it & not allow any upgrades (you'll be prompted every time you open the app) or it won't work (the camera will start & say something like this product will only work in China

and yeah it's not that cheap, the last one I go was under $us30

yeah I have that Chinese version. It just talks to me in Chinese I don't understand. Any chance u can link me to instructions to get it going?

        • thanks mate i'll check it out

      • this is the place to get the firmware. It aLso includes modified versions which allow other software (e.g. TinyCam) to view the footage. I found the 1.8.5.1Ltest rtsp worked best for me.

        http://xiaoyi.querex.be

it'll still talk to you in Chinese. Ypu need the app, fill in your wifi password,
then click next and a QR code appears on your phone, put that in front of your camera & it'll set itself up.

    • I have been using 3x Chinese ones, never had any issues.

I've got the Chinese version too. Initially made the mistake up upgrading the firmware, then had to find the older one and reload it so it would work again.
I wouldn't buy another one. Pity the international version is always more expensive.

    • If you use the Chinese version with the Chinese App on your phone it apparently works.. APK are available online (not play store) for android

      • alas not, I tried that, but it's the firmware of the camera which phones home to check.
There is a way to disable the check, bt you need to flash it anyway, telnet in, change a file in linux. But that's a whole lotta effort.

I bought a roughly $20 similar type IP camera from ebay, and I can't get it working as instruction, support & refund are nil.
So suggest a brand name like this, hopefully with user support especially is key to this type of technology.

  • Is there a way you can tell that it is the international version ie model number or something? I am struggling to see how to tell chinese model from international.

      1. Identify the product version of your camera
Please check the first 4 characters on the back of the camera as below figure ,
if the format is [0~9][0~9][A~Z][A~Z], the 3rd and 4th characters standard for the country code (case insensitive):
      CN : Chinese Version
US / TW /KR/other Country Code : International Version
      3. All other format strings : Chinese Version
      Please be aware of that:
Chinese version is to be used in China mainland only.
International version is to be used in US/TW/KR only.

You will get the Chinese version from any of the Chinese suppliers unless explicitly stated as international.

The Chinese version works perfectly well, and can be accessed via rtsp with a custom firmware, which can be used in other software like ispy (windows) and tinycam monitor (android).

http://xiaoyi.querex.be/ (does not require micro SD)

    https://github.com/fritz-smh/yi-hack (requires permanent micro SD)

  • edit: I must be blind, looks like the comment above answers my question.

  • I got two of these Chinese version cameras from Mushtato last year when they were AUD49 delivered. It works ok if you use the Android yi camera app (EN) from the xiaomi website. I have also upgraded the camera firmware with no issues (now at ver 1.8.6.1c 20160519). But then my camera was manufactured before Nov 2015.

  • Not a bargain price but the cameras are pretty good quality and have decent features for the price.

Once the custom firmware goes on they are excellent little cameras. I'll buy another but not at this price.

    • yeah they are an awesome camera. The night vision is surprisingly good.
I paid ~$au366-40 for my two. I'm looking for a third for outside.

      • Just out of curiosity… why would you have these cameras indoors? I'm paranoid about people getting into my network and getting access to my cameras… even if I change the default settings, etc.

        • kids rooms. With the standard firmware the video stream is encrypted & can only be viewed via the app (but connects via Chinese servers, if you're paranoid). It's linked via your Xiaomi a/c. Once setup you need physical access to the cam & do a hard reset to connect it to another account (then the original account loses access & you'd realise).

If you're worried about the chinese (govt) hacking into your camera, you can flash it with a firmware enabling (unecnyrtped) RTSP & blocking the camera from having internet access on your router (or connecting it to a non-internet wifi router). Then you'd have to be on your network, or VPN into your network to view the camera. But if someone gets access to your network they could feasibly access your camera.

Personally I'm not worried by the Chinese Govt accessing my camera, they're too far away to do anything (assuming they know where I live). I only plug them in at bedtime, so sleeping kids & in a messy room isn't that exciting. The motion detection is handy to see if they're

        • @supabrudda: Thanks, supabrudda (intersting username. You Malaysian or Singaporean by any chance?) I might think this through. But setting up a VPN sounds painful. Would be nice to have a camera looking straight out the front and back of the house though.

  • I have honey ants that come out at night in my kitchen, I don't want Xiaoyi ants filming them at night. Ants will drive you crazy.
