I bought a tronsmart mxiii pro in a prev sale and to be honest I would not recommend any android boxes. I have issues such as random black screens during playback (mkv) and terrible audiosync. I wasted $100

    • +1

Sounds more like a codec issue

      • -2

        Or just terrible hardware.

For $29 what would you pick lel.

    • I completely agree. These Chinese android boxes does the job but not satisfactorily. Since there are no updates or support, the issues are never resolved. Android boxes still seems like in beta mode but without further development.

      • Tronsmart boxes will receive updates until the chipset manufacturers stop releasing updates.

Other TV boxes sometimes have updates released on Geekbuying's blog. A recent example being the RBox with 3 firmware updates.

        • I have transmart android box bought last year from geek buying. So far I have never received any update. Neither OS nor security update.
Not saying they are bad but not upto the mark and their price reflects that.

        • @akd: Which box is it? Not all have OTA.

        • @akd: R68 received many updates. The 100mb version is no longer receiving updates as Rockchip have stopped supporting that version of the chip.

          http://www.tronsmart.com/?cat=74

        • @Clear: I did not receive OTA update. I checked last week. I might connect to pc and see if any available.

        • @akd: Try the stock firmware and that should give you OTA.

      • Try a Minix or Beekink.

        • -2

          Beekink…LOL

        • @syousef: Hehe. Sorry just did my finger weights. Fingers still a bit swole.

Sorry to hear that mate. But thanks for the laugh.

Have to disagree. My beelink mxiii mini does everything perfectly, so much faster than my previous windows htpc.

      • I also disagree regarding the usability of these android boxes. I bought one initially for $30USD and was so impressed with what it can do (all I do is use it for playing media), and the inclusion of the remote. The WIFI reception has also been quite good and so much more quicker to get going than my previous asus media players, let alone the WD TV Live that I paid $100 for. I even have one connected to my LG smart TV to access my NAS windows share directories despite that TV ability to access the files as searching, playing, controlling the media (and remembering the play back positions) appear to be quite quick and convenient.

One of my 3 boxes sometimes hang requiring a power cable out reboot, and its remote needs a firm press on the down button, but no complete failure and so far for the money, I am satisfied.

I posted this due to the reduction in price of the S905 units which I am hoping somebody would find useful, as well as it being faster than my R3229 units which stutters a bit using Kodi 16.1 but as my other post below, could be due to Kodi processing the files in software modes, despite what the settings say.

        • yes s905x chipset is on market now.. slightly better and has support for VP9 (or could be VP10).

  • How do these handle streaming on kodi?

  • -1

could you use one of these with Foxtel Go app and connected to a TV? any one try this on an Android box?

    • That's a negative. I tried to connect but was unable to connect

      • Thanks.
Saves me the hassle of trying now. Cheers.

    • Should be able to as it's Android, try Whirlpool perhaps. Try a Windows box.

      • windows, too expensive. android and ios seem to block output and is only to a screen on a tablet.

        • It's not expensive if it is a solution. Just trying to provide options. I've seen someone on YouTube get their foxtel go onto a TV, but it was a while ago. Pretty sure they used a JB iOS. The following WP seems to suggest Android boxes are a no go atm. I have a Wintel Win10 box so going to try soon hopefully.

I bought an MXQ Pro a couple of weeks ago (about $50) and so far its working great. I use it with Plex libraries and Netflix without a hitch. No local storage attached yet. Have installed a few apps just as easy as done on a phone. So far so good.

    • i have same box, absolutely fantastic. but when i try open netflix it says not supported in your region? what's the trick?

      • try Kodi - you may not require netflix

      • +1

Was it pre installed when you got the box? Mine wasn't so I installed it from the play store using my AU google account so maybe yours doesnt work because its not from the AU playstore. If not that I would just try uninstalling and installing again.

    • I have 3 x MXQ 4K R3229 android 4.4.4 units, one of which I use almost every single night. Kodi is great at streaming from windows share directories although for some reason the R3229 units have the resolution of Kodi 16.1 locked to 720P as its highest, and it can't send proper Dolby Digital signals through HDMI or co-axial digital out. Also Kodi seems to decode using software only as some heavier files in x265 formats stutters a bit.

However, the base android media player and also MX Player both plays all these files smoothly in hardware decode mode, as well as sending AC3 5.1 through properly. Only issues are that both of these players can only play files off local HDD storage, though I have been able to bypass this issue also by sending window share files through ES file explorer.

Can anyone clarify if Kodi with S905 runs on full 1080P?

  • Could someone please comment on the A95x http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Nexbox-A95X-TV-BOX-368642.htm…? The spec is similar and a bit cheaper.

Is there a box yet that can play any games Shield style but less than half the price?

    • +2

they all play games, but most have the Mali 400 or Male 450 GPU - so not as fast as the shield. The S912 chipset based boxes have a Mali 820 which is specifically aimed at Android gaming at 1080p with fast graphics, so that might be a cheaper alternative.. think they're due out in about a month or so.

      • +2

Cannot wait for the S912 boxes. Currently, the most powerful chip for gaming in these Chinese boxes is the RK3288 which is decent. I personally use a UGOOS UT3S for Android gaming.

  • Optical out is great but why would they not license dts-hd?!

    • Cost is the main reason. It can be very expensive for a budget brand/device to license dts.

      • +2

Only decoding requires license - forwarding original audio stream (regardless of encoding) to another (licensed) decoder, such as AV Receiver, via HDMI, does not.

        • yeah your TV cannot play surround 5.1 or 7.1 sound, so you need an AVR anyways.. may as well do passthru for all audio and let the AVR handle it (less processing to be done on the media player = less heat also).

  • Is Geekbuying genuine? Lots of negative review about them.

    • People are more likely to write negative reviews than positive.

Most common issues I get PM'd about is the free shipping - it can take up to 30 business days in some cases to arrive. A lot of products have discounted TNT Express available.

Another issue is people getting hit by Paypal's currency conversion fee as they're either using an account that has fees or haven't set up their account to use their card's conversion rate.

    • I have bought all my 3 MXQ 4K android boxes from them, from 2 different shipments. There has been no issues. As above you would need to understand that for free shipment, things will take up to 30 days but so far, no issues from me. Just pay with Paypal and there should be no stress.

    • Yes I got my Tronsmart from GeekBuying so retailer is legit. I just dont think android boxes are worth the money (at least not the one they sold me).

  • My concern is that the product never delivers.
