  • Got a coupon in my email but when I tried to use it, it says "Sorry coupon is for a specific customer".

    • As below, create and account with the same email address you sent the code to and it will work.

I got a 50% code, what did you get? Wondering if it is random or if they're all 50%.

      • I got a 50% and 30% off.

      • 50% discount for me.

      • Hi did you received yours .. I bought it in July and they have emailed that they have moved it to 31 jul then to 18 aug now to 22 Aug ..

        • Yep mine appeared on the 10th, haven't really done much with it as what I have done so far was a bit disappointing so not exactly enthused to get back to it. I'll probably flash a custom firmware when the dust settles and there's a clear leader etc.

  • +2

Make sure you log into Geekbuying with the email that the Code was sent to.
One Code per email they do have some checking in place.

    • Can confirm the code works when logged in.

      • Registered with 2 accounts. Log in and still doesn't work. Are you using Pc or mobile ?

        • Windows PC and Firefox.

      • +1

Can't get the code working with mobile chrome.

Fixed: make sure you check the capitalisation on you registered coupon email. [email protected] <> [email protected]

        • Goodness. You are right.

Remember to check in with the same email address capitalisation as per the coupon email. My coupon was sent to [email protected] but I checked in with [email protected]. That's why it didn't work. Even the website login doesn't work if you use a different capitalisation. What kind of system is this?

          Anyway, bought the $99 version.

        • @trump3: yeah so silly! I ended up creating 2 accounts with 'same' email address. The item end up costing me PayPal aud$70

        • +2

@trump3: The kind of website where they make it super easy to get a 50% coupon using the same email address, just by varying case!

  • +3

    I got 3x 30%, 2x 40% and 1x 50% code. Now I need to decide if I even want to buy it..

    • Hmm I must have been lucky to get a 50% first try, made me suspect it was a bit of a lure but I guess not.

Specs seem decent enough, a bit disappointed it's still stuck with 10/100 ethernet and at best n wireless, but at 50% off it's hard to resist. I've been looking for a cheap replacement for my poor old bizarrely behaving WDTV for a while.

      • +1

Yeah you got lucky, I wouldn't even consider this on principle when I had 40% codes and others had 50%.

Where did you get those specs from? I'm seeing 802.11 a/b/g/n 2.4GHz/5GHz in the image and 802.11 b/g/n in the specs table. Also it says 10/100/1000 in the specs table.

        • I only looked at the more expensive one, under communication it shows Ethernet 10/100M LAN, where are you seeing 1000? I said at best n meaning abgn but no ac. Thought if it was lacking gigabit, it'd be nice if it had ac but alas it doesn't.

Just a bit worried that 100 and definitely n might not cope with high bitrate streams, will have to store internally or on an attached device if the network side of it can't handle it.

        • Isn't 10/100M =100/1000 ?

        • @foobar:

At the bottom there is a specs table, it says Ethernet 10/100M/1000M LAN. But then that same specs table also says 802.11 b/g/n… The images on GB are taken directly from the official page and it says two different things there. China -_-

          http://www.tronsmart.com/products/tronsmart-orion-r68-meta

        • @blue_panther9_9:

          Isn't 10/100M =100/1000 ?

10 megabit and 100 megabit unless definitions have changed and I didn't notice. Gigabit would either be listed as 1000 or 1Gb or 1Gbps or similar.

        • @AngryAlfred:

At the bottom there is a specs table, it says Ethernet 10/100M/1000M LAN

Indeed it does, but on the geekbuying site it differs.

          http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Tronsmart-Orion-R68-Meta-Andr…

How very confusing! Presumably the Tronsmart specs are correct as it's their device and Geekbuying have gotten it wrong somehow.

        • +1

@foobar: Correct. The specs on the GB site are incorrect. I've confirmed that it's gigabit.

        • @blue_panther9_9: No, it's 10/100Mb/s which is 1.25/12.5MB/s. Still fast enough to stream any media, but might be slow for copying large files.

        • @blue_panther9_9:

          M = Mega.

          So, could still be 100Mbit…

B = Byte, b = bit. (The B or b is not written, so assume it is "b"!)

      • I got 3x40% and 1x 50%. Geekbuying should make this as a game. :p

      • I too have a poorly behaved WDTV. If I were to pull the trigger on this what Android based app would I be able to use that can offer the same kind of media experience the WDTV can?

        • +1

Kodi on any device will provide a better media experience than the WDTV can by far.

        • +1

It appears to come with Kodi which is what XBMC is now called, should be pretty well good to go OOTB and hopefully will get frequent ongoing updates.

        • +1

don't get me wrong, I love KODI/XBMC, the media content it builds for your content is very pretty and has high partner satisfaction rating - BUT, when I just want to plug in a USB drive and just watch something, I still use my WD TV. It just works.

The built in media players for android should also work ok, no specific need to install KODI.

        • @gizmomelb: Thanks for the info. I currently use Serviio to stream all my content throughout the house and WDTV access the DLNA content quickly and presents it nicely. As long as KODI can do that I'm interested.

        • @gizmomelb:

Kodi can play off a drive without scraping, you just go through the files like a folder structure. Also by the looks Kodi comes pre-installed anyway.

  • Just looking and yet to confirm 100%
    Tronsmart Orion R68 Meta (2GB RAM +16GB eMMC with broadcom ap6335 wifi module,support 802.11ac)
Tronsmart Orion R68 Pro (1GB RAM + 8GB eMMC with broadcom ap6212 wifi module):
Things can get lost in translation sometimes

  • Might want to update the price noted is USD. AUD is $133.49 and $100.11….

    • Thanks always forget that one. :-)

  • almost pulled the trigger, almost

The RK3688 (ARM A53 core) used in this box really doesn't perform much better than the older 4 core RK3288 (ARM A17 core)

A17 mips / processor cycle ratio is 4, while A53 ratio is only 2.3.

    Cortex A53 is the 64-bit successor of Cortex A7 core. (2.3 DMIPS/MHz vs 1.9 DMIPS/MHz)
So it’s a low power core. To get any performance improvement over current Cortex A15/A17 processor

so, unless you really need the extras offered, or these are significantly cheaper, not a brilliant deal :-(

    • But it has hdmi 2.0 and can handle 4k@60fps. I was wondering whether next gen xiaomi box can beat the spec and price. How wbout tronsmart telos?http://www.tronsmart.com/products/tronsmart-draco-aw80-telos-121.html

    • I am NOT a processor expert. So how would this low power core affect its ability to play media content? Or what other performance will improve with the A15 processor as a media player?

Edit: Found the official product page. Looks pretty impressive to me.
      http://www.tronsmart.com/products/tronsmart-orion-r68-meta

Edit: added NOT a processor expert

    • +2

RK3288 is more focused on gaming and providing more power while the RK3688 is more focused on video playback. A lot of the lower clocked Amlogic chipsets actually outperformed the higher clocked RK3288 in a lot of video playback tests, but were slower in gaming.

      • +1

Yep, exactly what I found during testing.

      • android gaming and specifically for me, EMULATION on one of these boxes is why I bought one. Will be nice to run PSP/PSX games at full speed, here's hoping the N64 emulation can also run full speed all the time.

EDIT: Wonder how it compares CPU/GPU wise to the nVidia SHIELD? That can run some Wii games at 100% speed. So Wii emulation would be exceedingly nice to have as well.

      • saw your 'marketing' tag - are you involved with geekbuying or tronsmart and if so do you know if any more 50% codes will be released?

        • I'm 3rd party marketing for Geekbuying. I'm not actually employed by them, but am Associated in one way or another. I'll find out if there are going to be anymore, but if they've stopped doing them now then I have a strong feeling they won't do anymore as Tronsmart would be controlling it.

  • +1

I got 5%, and that is not even here

    • +1

That 5% offer is just for creating an account. You need to click on the email me a code link to get one of the offers.

      • Thanks mate

      • Couldn't stack the codes unfortunately.

  • +1

Awesome - thanks, got it for just $66.74 delivered. Brought it to upgrade my Raspberry Pi 2 which was running OpenElec. Didn't really need it but figured having full Android 5.1 vs running OpenElec would be better long term…. Now just need a cheap keyboard :-)

    • The K400r logitech work well with the Media players I have.

  • fark it, bought one anyway, saw the prices all over the web, most >$100 for the higher spec one,
and the predecessor all the same price anyway. for $50USD delivered, it does seem a bargain
looks like these'll run windows 10 soon :-),

Nailed a 50% off code on the 1st go so bought it.

  • +1

Almost tempted to snap one up myself, but it'd be an impulse buy. Though my aging Minix NEO X7 does need a replacement…

Edit: AAAaaaand I bought the $99 one for ~57USD delivered with TNT express :P

  • Specs are different on the website to the table at the bottom (probably taken from the manufacturers site)
these things really need a USB 3.0, been waiting to get something with usb 3.0 for ages.. nothing comes out :-(
i got a 50% code on a disposable email address after 10 or so tries. if I can't buy it, i'll post it here for whoever wants to use it.

    • Did you buy it? If not, can you PM me the code and the disposable email address? Thanks

      • +1

just enter in multiple email addresses and you'll likely get your own 50% off in a handful of attempts..

moving the '.' in a gmail address works well (e.g. [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] etc etc)

        • Thanks, SBOB. I tried that a few dozen times. Didn't get a 50%. Mostly 10% and 20%.

I'm guessing there's limited availability of them now or something like that.

Anyone else having any luck with it now, or is it just me?

Also, if anyone has a 50%-off code and disposable email available, I'd greatly appreciate it if you PM me. Thanks.

      • +1

sorry mate. I forgot about it, check your PM in 5'

  • +1

keep trying random email addresses (extended variations of my own email address) for code until a 50% code came up. then create an account with that email varied email address.

  • whats a good remote with keyboard to get with this thing ?

    • +1

I'd go for the Logitech K400R or some of the tiny iPazzPort Bluetooth Keyboards

  • have put some more information up about this one , with some links - here
    https://bleughbleugh.wordpress.com/2015/07/13/another-new-ga…

  • I'm a sucker for streaming devices and tried most of the mainstream ones, so thought I better give this a look. My house has settled on running Amazon Fire TVs running Kodi, so I'll be interested to see what this can do.

    • You can never have to many media players.:-)

      • True dat. I think as long as I kepp running Kodi on whatever I get the wife won't get too upset.

        • I have amazon fire tvs aswell, any benefit to changing to these?

        • +1

@cjb: To keep up with the OZBers (Jones)

        • @cjb: Might be alright if you're looking to play some Android games with controller support.

        • @cjb:

Probably not, I just like tinkering with these sorts of things. I haven't rooted my AFTV so can't play things off external drives, which this will be able to do. So IMO this is a more portable solution compared to the AFTV.

        • @cjb: I love the fire tv, but the one thing I'd like to be able to do (without rooting) is to access the Google Play store for my purchased movies/tv shows. For that reason I might pick one of these up.

  • i only received 5% . registered using 2 different email … keep trying ?

    • You will get a 5% code for signing up to the website, but you need to click on the yellow "Send me the code" button on the page.

      • got it. bought one..

  • I received 50% discount code. My OZbargain instinct pushes me to make impulse buy, but still cannot figure out what is use of media player.

My Sony smart TV has in built You Tube, Netflix app and few other apps. For "Other" movies, I use Plex from PC. What will be the use of media player for me?

    • Hook up a controller and play games? If you're quite tech savvy then you can use Servers Ultimate to host different kinds of servers on it too.

      • so you could play roms of a sd card then ?

        • What does that mean?

        • Yep. There are plenty of emulators on the Play Store that will work.

        • @Clear: how would it cope running the dolphin emulator? any experience?

        • @Lukian: Thanks, that is interesting.

        • @odrocs1987: no idea yet, need to see benchmarks and see how it compaers to the Tegra X1 CPU/GPU (which runs SOME emulated Wii /Gamecube games at 100% speed)

EDIT: darn.. not looking good according to this page - http://kyokojap.myweb.hinet.net/gpu_gflops/
the Tegra X1 has 435 Gflops of GPU power, the Power VR G6110 GPU in the Tronsmart RK68 has 38.4 Gflops.

        • @gizmomelb:

thanks gizmomelb, just wondering if the agent has had any experience testing the emulators, or spoken to someone who has.

        • +2

@odrocs1987: This video has it running on the RK3288 chip and seems to be running fine. I've had several emulators including Dolphin run fine on my device with the much older RK3188 processor, so I think it's safe to say that it'll run fine on this one.

There are however A LOT of emulators on the Play Store, so if you ever did run into trouble you could try another.

      • Thanks, I can make use as server access or simply hard drive/NAS access.

  • There are also a few AMlogic S812 based devices around for about the same price, I think that's also a good choice.

  • +1

Bought the $99 one with a 50% off coupon. I don't know anything about these things, but I want to use Kodi and couldn't resist the 50% off. Hope I didn't make a mistake!

  • +2

    I got 40% 5 times in a row… this is worse than vegas ;)

    • +1

Nah, in Vegas you get drunk and wake up to find you got married by an Elvis-impersonator celebrant at a drive-thru chapel to someone you don't even know who is asking you about pregnancy test kits.

      … or maybe that's just me :(

      • +1

        real life hangover you are

  • +1

Would buy this if it supports DTS-HD and TrueHD passthrough. Does it?

    • I had a mini x8h and replaced it with a NUC for this very reason (cost 15x more) but it was worth it to get the output I was after, I did a lot of research at the time and the chip-set they were using couldn't get the licencing to use the DTS-HD and TRUE HD codecs, it was also said they were not capable but rumored this was to cover up the fact the manufacturer wouldn't pay the licencing for the codecs. Sorry I can't be of more help but the previous chip-set never was capable of 60FPS so maybe research this new chip-set. There are a lot of forums on these things, you should find a result fairly quickly by searching something like "Rockchip R3368 DTS HD TRUE HD" and report back :).

On a side note DTS MA HD is Core + extension meaning that in kodi the file will still playback the audio as the CORE stream is DTS when I did this i noticed the sound actually seemed better than standard DTS.

If you have more files that are the far less common Dolby Digital True HD then you won't get any audio output at all, the codec structure is 2 separate streams completely so there is no Dolby Digital audio embedded within the True HD stream. (just worth knowing depending on your reasoning for wanting this requirement you may be able to get away with using this device)

    • +3
      • WOW I hope that's right I wish these were around a year ago I may not have needed a NUC (still happy as it is a very solid unit that's highly flexible) but I forgot to mention another limitation of the old chipset is max output of 5.1 this chipset does 7.1, so it's a real winner for a great price!

    • For those who still care about if this allows any passthrough…

Kodi - FAIL even with the patched install/recent update/SPMC (disappointed as navigation is so easy)
      MX Player - SUCCESS
DS Video - SUCCESS (For those who have a synology NAS) - This was a surprise

Tested both True HD and DTS-HD Master files.

All in all for ~$57 an awesome box which finally allows passthrough and the video playback from a 3d Bluray backup (.m2ts) file was flawless!

  • Hi Geekbuying, can you please suplly a picture of the Remote Control, Some of the Tronsmart devices don't appear to have many buttons?
