I just lodged a paypal dispute against these idiots as email answers after three days just say "thanks for you to wait until 18th August" after requesting cancellation and refund. Never again like a lot of people I suspect.

    • PM me your order number and I'll ask them directly to cancel and refund you.

      • Because your advice to cancel directly should be considered far more important than the customer requesting a cancel directly…

        • Better than me not offering to help. I won't bother if people like you don't want any of it.

        • @Clear: Is it? How is repeating what someone else has done any more helpful? Genuinely I'm interested, this is not a sarcastic question.

        • +1

@fluberries: I communicate to the Geekbuying staff direct and live through Facebook rather than email. Far more reliable than emailing sales and getting a generic unrelated response. Especially when my contact is assigned to Ozbargain and sales deal with everyone.

        • @Clear: Thanks

I just emailed this morning to cancel my order.

      Let the games begin.

Refund back in my PayPal today 48hrs after cancelling.

Kind of harsh using 'idiot', isn't it? Bear in mind English is not their first language.

I have dealt with some customer service people here is Australia and they are not that great either even if they understand English.

      • Yep, you're right and a little harsh I guess but no reflection on the nationality. Just a general idiot as I also used a google translation into simplified Chinese to mirror my email requests. I guess they didn't understand. Anyways will see what happens through Clears requests.

    • +1

Refund in Paypal account as of today.

  • anyone work out how to play android games on this? they install fine but i'm not able to click on anything

i'm happy with kodi so far- haven't tried netflix sorry

    • Try Xbox wired controller or mouse

    • A lot of games are designed for touch screens. The air mouse probably won't work with a lot of them. Using a controller like an Xbox 360 one works well.

  • Well this really backfired for them…

As a means of promoting their site… while the price/product is great… the way it was handled is appalling (mine still hasn't shipped..) and can only have majorly hurt their reputation on here.
So, while they have gotten our money… I'd say the majority of us will never buy from them again.

So, if their business model is to sting people on a one time sale, grab the money and not expect any return business, they've got it down to a fine art.

    • -2

You could have cancelled after the first 500 were sold out and shipped… in fact you still can. No one is forcing you to wait for the next 2 batches.

      • +1

I emailed asking what was going on and they said it'd ship on the 31st… that was a Friday so I thought I'd let it go until today and I looked on here and there's talk of another delay.

This is also after their support indicated I'd only get the 100meg network version on two occassions, despite what's being said here RE the second batch getting gigabit.

Far, far too much miscommunication, as well as a downright lack of communication - why didn't support email all of us to indicate there was another delay?
If I got an email apologising for the inconvenience, I wouldn't be too bothered.
Instead, I only find out from the ozbargain comments… that's not very professional and it's just infuriating for the customer.

        Cancelling now is pointless.

It's like swimming half way across the ocean and getting tired and turning back…
If I've waited this long, I may as well wait until it arrives now - especially considering everyone here who cancelled is having major problems.

        • Fortunately people who have asked for refunds are now getting emails saying that they will be within 48 hours.

  • as long as I get my box and it doesn't end up as another DX stuff up.

    • Got that THL W8 Quad Core from that deal sitting in front of me……

Hi all, With the problem with Netflix uninstall new apk (v3.7.1) install (v3.14.2 build 6186).

All will works well until it upgrades itself.
This will show that unit will work ok with Netflix.
I do not have the unit in question but have the same problem with a cheap android 10" tablet.
    Cheers have fun
    Kevin

    • thanks!

will give this a go when the unit eventually arrives.

anyone confirm this work around works?

      • +1

Not working here still have loading……

  • Today is Aug 5 and no notification of shipping, I'm tempted to cancel the order as it's doubtful I'll be receiving it any time soon.

    • There are only 230pcs from Aug 5. If you cancel you'll receive a refund within 48 hours. Like all technology, there is always a better one around the corner. ;)

  • Hi there
    thank you for your email
i am sorry to tell you that the item you ordered is presell
it will be in stock after Aug,15
so could you please wait for more days?
sorry for the inconvenience to you
    Best regards
    Tina

lol, I ordered it when it was in stock. They sold more than they could instead of saying it was out of stock, oh well.

    • On the plus side you're now going to be getting the gigabit version ;)

      • No that's not really a plus side, I'd rather have had it a month ago without the gigabit.

        • -2

Then you should have cancelled as you were aware of the delays.

        • @Clear: Love how you keep blaming the consumer. How about, they shouldn't have sold stock they didn't have? Give me a break. I have tried to cancel numerous times. Company is a joke.

        • @fluberries: I'm very aware of how bad this went. Don't need to state the obvious. I can't change what has already been done. If people know that the first batch is gone and now at presale then they have the choice of waiting until Aug 18 or they can cancel. That's not my fault…..

Plenty of people have had their money refunded so far. I don't mind if you think the company is shit either. Move on and don't buy again.

        • @Clear: I will move on when I get my money back thanks

        • -2

@Clear: Yeah the delay was until the until the end of July, try to keep up.
You're doing a horrible job representing an already bad business. What's the email to complain about you? They should probably be told you're as big of a smartass as you are incompetent.

        • @mightyfes:

So you would rather companies didn't have any representatives on this site/forum if a deal happen to go a bit pear shaped or you don't like their response?
(which based on the constant whining by a couple on this deal is probably justified, how many times does he have to say he just acts as a marketing rep and is not in sales and doesn't work directly for them)

Your idle threat at emailing a complaint about him is just childish

        • @mightyfes: Before the end July it was delayed until the 18th of August and that was stated here, on the product page and some people had already been emailed. I was able to find out that 230pcs would ship out after 5th of August and 1000pcs after Aug 18.

I'm not employed by GeekBuying either. I took this title of marketing by the suggestion of the mods. I have no obligation whatsoever to help anyone with issues, but I do.

Perhaps I have been rude, but it's easy when people don't read.

        • -1

@SBOB: When did I say companies should not have representatives? What I'm saying is companies should not have bad representatives. Yes I would rather not have a representative than a snide one, I'm sorry if you disagree.

No it's not an idle threat, if he/she isn't directly employed they probably still receive a benefit; if not then honestly if I ran a business I'd want to be made aware a random that I haven't been employed is badly representing my brand. Honestly, Geekbuying would be in a better position if he/she did not exist on this post at all.

        • @mightyfes: There is no benefit here for me from this deal whatsoever. It's frustrating and easy to snap when someone tells you to keep up and is generally hostile. There are 6 pages here of people pointing out how bad this deal has gone and my acknowledgement. There are also a lot of comments where I've mentioned when the next batches are, which the product page also mentions.

Unfortunately I have no way of making your order ship faster, but I can help get refund issues sorted if you're unhappy with their response.

        • +1

          @Clear:

Yeah I'm sorry if you've taken offense, I didn't mean to be that hostile. Thanks for the offer if they give me trouble I'd rather dispute it on paypal.

        • +1

@mightyfes: No worries. I've been unprofessional myself. If it comes to a paypal dispute, let me know. I can get you a refund within 48 hours.

My pro arrived yesterday, using free shipping. I'm pretty happy with it, thanks OP. Seems like everyone having to wait ordered the meta? I placed my order after they stopped giving out coupon codes, but they sent it out on the 27th.

  • got my meta today, the remote that comes with it is pretty useless

    • +1

The Logitech K400R that is going around cheap in a lot of deals goes well with this. Null Keyboard will hide the onscreen keyboard if you use a keyboard.

      • Thanks. Anyone have recommendations on a compact air mouse? Brand and/or model? My media player is intended for the bedroom, so an air mouse with keyboard is more suitable.

I've been reading around a bit, but nothing stands out like the K400R.

Also when it comes to communication via Bluetooth versus something which has a dedicated USB dongle, is there much difference? Thanks.

        • +1

I find something having a dongle to be much easier. I don't have to worry about pairing in bluetooth settings as you literally plug it in and turn your keyboard/mouse on. Range on the USB dongles can sometimes be a lot better too.

  • After the third time of trying to cancel, apparently stock is in their warehouse. I was given some speel about them testing out the packaging or something before shipping.. It's just a constant move of the carrot with this organisation. They once again completely ignored my email in regards to canceling.

    • If you want me to try I'm more than happy to pass your order number on and insist that they refund you?

      • Good luck with that, apparently its been shipped as of this morning! Don't know whether to laugh or cry at this point. Thank you for the offer anyway.

Now I just need to hope they send me the multiple units I ordered and not just one.I constantly tried to get clarification in regards to multiple units and the discount. However, they never clarified and never asked for more money. So, if I open the box and one unit is in there, it will be a crying moment for sure.

        • Are you able to give me your order number? They might be able to do something.

  • I asked when it will be sent and got this back:

    Hi sir
    Thanks for your email
We are sorry to inform you that the item you ordered " R68 " is for pre-sell, hope you can notice our item page ,we have edited the available time
please do not worry. Once it's available, we will ship it to you as soon as possible.
    We apologize for the inconvenience.
    Cordially,
    Carrie

I just want to know the date when they plan to send them so I can decide if I want to cancel or not.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

  • Ok just got my Tronsmart R68 Meta today with normal shipping.. I just found out that this thing is not Dual Band wifi.. 2.4Ghz only,, another misleading descriptions. other people have reported the same thing.. it probably won't be long til we found out that this thing is not 64bit either!

    http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-support/rk3688-devices-a…

    • I've had a quick mess around with my meta this morning having received it just yesterday and it found and connected to my 5GHz band no problems at all - max connection I got/noticed was 396Mbit, but it was a bit all over the place at times. The 2.4GHz connection was terrible by comparison, 5Mbit at one point - ouch.

Haven't done any local speed tests yet though to see how reliable those speeds are, had enough of it for the moment.

    • Received my Tronsmart R68 meta today too… free shipping from Singapore. Will test out later.

  • Friday evening 07/08/2015 I wrote to geekbuying to cancel the order since it has been a long time waiting. Got an email at 11.57pm 07/08/2015 that it was sent out via Registered Post SingPost.

    • I had the same experience.

      • And because it is near midnight… it won't get lodged till the post office opens (ie. Monday at the earliest) and if they will do it then.

        • SingPost still does not have the item yet from Geekbuying as of this evening.

  • how do you know if you have the gigabit version. Mine just shippeed this week

  • Mine arrived today, standard shipping so any that shipped on or around the 31st should be close to arriving if they haven't already.

  • got my meta today.
Netflix doesn't work and NBA (NBA Gametime/TV) doesn't work.

Yet to try out Plex, but 2 of the 3 main reasons for buying/using the box are a miss.

    • starting to sound like a fancy paper weight :)

      • Haven't regretted a tech purchase in a while..

This one is a big one.. hope I can atleast offload it to the in laws as a gift of some sort.

  • +4

    Got mine last night

    I exclusively use plex.

I am using Ethernet (Unsure if 1GB or 100mb yet), Loaded plex after signing into google.

Wow box is incredibly fast to skip through movies even 1080p. One movie would not play but I will probably re-encode it with handbrake or similar. Sound was just through HDMI and was fine.

The initial loading screen for plex was almost instant compared with a cheap android tv box it takes forever and a day. Picture was far clearer than utilizing the chromecast especially noticeable watching concert clips recorded with mobiles.

The remote is pretty basic, it would have been nice to have a skip chapter button on it.

The Australian power adapter is really cheap and nasty almost dangerous actually. I will probably go out and buy a travel one which should be a lot better.

I understand that there are issues with Netflix, NBA and other apps. For me utilizing Plex it's the best box that I have used. I don't have 4k tele or 4k content to test at this point. I see on the Freaktab.com forums there are other firmware's you may be able to try if your proficient enough which may help to solve some of the issues.

When I say fast I'm comparing to my other media players such as the Midnight Box MX2, Chromecast, 2 Chinese Android Clones some Popcorn Hours (A-200, A-110, MG34B)

I would like to try gaming on this box as well as I heard it performs quite well.

Considering the price of $57 I am happy with it and hope they iron out all the issues people have been having.

I have also ordered the Beelink X2 H3 for a bargain $34USD from Gear Best so I will see how it compares to this.

    • +1

The Australian power adapter is really cheap and nasty almost dangerous actually.

Did you unclip the one that was already on it and then rotate out the pins to fit the AU adapter or stick the adapter on the adapter that's already there?

At first I also thought it was super dodgy, a mini tower of electrical fail, but once discovering there was already a removable adapter on the plug, it looked a lot better. I then used hot glue to attach the AU adapter as it wasn't exactly a great or tight fit but it's very solid now. Would have preferred a slide on AU adapter.

      • Yes I unclipped the one that was on there and clipped the aus one on but it still scares me, doesn't appear to fully cover the actual metal parts well at all. Wonder if there is somewhere we could get a slide adapter to fit.

        • When I saw it was a slide on, I immediately got out one of my seagate external HDD boxes as they come with 3 or 4 slide on adapters but unfortunately it didn't fit.

It's pretty wobbly but holding it down tight and using hot glue made a world of difference. It shouldn't be necessary to do this but it was the quickest fix I could think of.

        • @foobar:

So i have a two pronged round adapter and a crappy add on .. Should the round one pull off ?? As I pulled it pretty hard and worrying about breaking the thing now !

        • @droodle:

Should the round one pull off ?

It slides off, it doesn't pull off. Have a good look at it and you might be able to see the direction to slide it. Mine came off reasonably easily, not much force required so perhaps yours is stuck for some reason if it won't budge.

Once that's off, you rotate up the two flat prongs that the adapter slid onto and then put on the AU adapter but it's not a great fit and quite wobbly, would have been so much better had they supplied a slide/clip on AU adapter.

        • @foobar:

          cheers - that explains it.

    • +3

Received mine on Monday morning (free shipping option). Haven't verified GB LAN or 5 GHz wifi but the device is really fast and Kodi works well with a Plex source. Playback is smooth and web browsing is excellent. I think I will decommission the WDTV.
The airmouse remote I got is also working very well. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111717082267

    • The Chinese and AU plugs look very similar so I don't know why they don't ship them instead of the US ones. I know the Chinese plug pins are 1mm longer and "upside down" but I would rather this than the 50c adapter.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AS/NZS_3112

  • From my own testing of the box, the issues appear to be definitely the ROM. So far root has been achieved here and Freaktab are starting to make some progress with TWRP which means custom ROMs and a Netflix fix either officially or unofficially ;)

This how it usually goes with new hardware with Android.

    • I eagerly await my paperweight (hasnt shipped yet) ;)

      • They've had 2 firmware updates since then. It might just be a somewhat functional paperweight by the time it arrives..

    • The app/program they used to achieve root was just flagged by my antivirus and has a worrying detecting rate on virustotal.

Reading on in the thread, it appears it's safe to use but still worth pointing out, perhaps others that download can mention if their AV flags it too.

      • It's normal for these kind of programs to be flagged as they give you root access to Android, which can be a security risk as it gives applications full access to the entire operating system. Rooting also voids the warranty, but fortunately Tronsmart isfine with it, while HTC, Samsung etc are not. There is also the risk of bricking your device.

        • Have you done yours?

        • @foobar: Not yet. If you're worried it's probably best to wait until more people try or another method pops up.

        • @Clear:

I want SMB access to a 2TB HDD I have plugged into it and to get a port that will work with Windows, it seems I need root so I'll probably have a go at it soon.

        • @foobar: I've rooted mine..it seems to be working fine so far.

        • @shiznit: I tried the link as suggested above on forums.tronsmart.com many times with no luck. It looks like it's takes a bit of luck. As one of the contributors said… "So I unplugged from the mains, reconnected and switched back on, at which point iRoot then continued and after a while claimed success.
A quick check with a root checker from the play store revealed that it was not rooted. But on the iRoot program interface on my PC there was a re-root option, so I tried this and it worked."

@shiznit, did you use iRoot or something else?

Is there another trick using iRoot?I tried to root my R68 about 5 times yesterday with iRoot to no avail.

        • @scottishdave:

When I skimmed through the thread earlier I something about using USB2.0 ports on your computer and not 3.0 as they won't work, maybe something about the OTG port on the R68 as well.

        • @scottishdave: Yes, I used I root. How far did you get with it? I'm pretty sure I used the USB3 port on the pc connected to the otg on the r68

        • @shiznit: I've tried my UBS2 and USB3 ports with no luck.

        • @scottishdave: I had to change the USB mode after connecting to the PC and reboot the r68 before iroot recognised it

        • @shiznit: I finally got iRoot to work. I can't figure out why it takes multiple times of running it to work. Others on Freaktab reported the same thing. Anyhow, its rooted, in a good way :-)

there is a firmware update here http://www.tronsmart.com/?cat=74
    Seems like a manual process.
I thought this device had OTA updates as a selling point?

    • I'm not going to have access to my device for a few days, but if you have your unit have you tried OTA? Every company releases their firmware for manual download on their website.
