OK, and can be used as a HTPC if you have particular needs for one, but can throttle a bit too easily.

    • Do you mind if I ask how these things go with only 2GB of RAM? I'd have thought that would be a big limitation.

      • +1

        I have a netbook with pretty much these specs - Atom Z3757F + 2GB RAM + 32GB.

It works pretty well if you only do one thing at a time.

This should be fine for basic HTPC - Netflix, Hulu etc.

        ETA: Whirlpool user review thread
TLDR: Works fine - tendency to overheat like ComputeStick - $2 usb fan resolved.

      • +1

No problem. Even 1GB is plenty for a HTPC.
For a bit of web browsing in Windows, you want 2GB.

      • +3

If you use Chrome you can use the Great Suspender addon to make your browsing experience a little more tolerable.

I have a Pendo device (same manufacturer of Protab) with the exact same specs and can say its a VERY poor multi-tasking machine. You can only do one or two things with it at a time. Heat management is also kind of poor so expect some underclocking / throttling if you push your CPU too hard.

        • ^^^Thanks heaps guys, I appreciate the advice. I'm trying to repurpose a couple of old monitors as cheap AIO workstations & was hoping something like this might suffice.

Yes, I want a reasonable multi-tasker so unfortunately I might have to pony up for a slightly more expensive solution!

    • Technically this is a different brand

Can you collect any of the above direct from the seller? Do they offer a easy returns system or face to face support like most bricks and mortar retailers do? If you were comparing this product with something sold at JB or Harvey Norman it would be a fair call. The current price is the best to date (correct me if wrong) at Target. This product ain't for everyone but for those curious about a PC on a stick the price is not bad and I assume will not be difficult to return to Target if it is crap or change of mind… Can the same be said about those eBay listings?

      • +8

Chill, just giving another option, its not an attack against you. Futu is pretty reputable. And, these are readily available, no one knows how store stock levels are for Target and they aren't available online.

        • Not a person attack by any means.

IF one can get a better deal elsewhere then go for it. It is all too often OzB's will be like I can get one at X price if I order it from overseas or on eBay. Each has their advantages and disadvantages.

Unbelievable! A computer on a usb!

I'll tell you, kids today, when I was at Uni in the 1970's studying FORTRAN the computer room was a massive room with 1 computer and……………….all true.

    • +1

Were you using Fortran 77 ?

      • Cobol for us, IIRC! :)

      • a newbe

      • I've forgotten what fortran. Didn't pursue a computing career, too small an industry (?). The punch cards made good book marks.

    • +2

..and we had to punch little holes into thousands of cards to make a big number, ahhh, back in the day….

Would you like us to notify you when liquid paper bottles are on sale?

    • Yeah getting smaller all the time …… next it will be a computer in a contact lens with a heads up display.

  • +1

liquid paper had not come out when I was at school…the freshest bit of teck we had was an ink eraser because the ball point pen had not been out long!

    • So you didn't have to use blotting paper and pens with nibs at school.

      • +1

nope, legacy tech was a little black board and chalk… I was only at that school for a short while, im amazed i can remember…
You must have went to a private school to be using nibs and blotting paper…lol..

  • Would these devices be ideal for using as a Plex streaming device?. Looking at something that doesn't require the PC to be constantly running when using Plex..

    • Yeah its fine

I streamed Steam on my Pendo with no issues and the CPU is enough to render 1080p

If you want to go half the price of this device, you can spend $50 and get a Raspberry Pi 3 with an enclosure from Aliexpress. It will do Plex too! (although, just barely as some people say that the CPU does poorly at transcoding video, and you'd need to re-encode first)

      http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2016/06/bad-movie-playback-on-y…

      • You should also mention that with an RPi you need to purchase a PSU, HDMI cable, SD Card, Case.

    • This would only aid in the streaming side aka client. You would still need to have some device running as the media server I assume it's your pcin this case. Therefore not what your after… Good news is they recently added media server function to the nvidia sheild which was originally a client

  • I am amazed target sells things like these.

  • No wonder Target are going broke, the worst performer in the Coles/Myer/Wesfarmers Group

    • Myer?

Good price/deal but buyers beware. The dream of a full windows computer in your pocket aren't quite here yet. I bought similar spec Compute Stick and I pulled my hair out using it as it was so sow even just browsing the web. And unstable. Maybe a fan would help but al the other issues like not working with various powered USB hubs and Bluetooth stability left me far from my dream of a PC to bring with me everywhere.

    • that dream already made reality (pocket-sized PC with lcd).. i backed this project which will start shipping from 20th of this month:

Also known as the PiPO X3 ;)

        • A 7" windows tablet in your pocket cant count as a PC but that ?!?!?!

        • +1

At least we all now know what Sony did with all of their old Walkman cases! ;)

        • correct, PiPO X3 been discussed early on by the campaigner and i still choose to buy this one instead

        • @timhobart: PiPO are an OEM/ODM manufacturer so Gole would have got it from them.

        • +1

          @dlovep: isn't that how marketing works :)

        • @Clear: yes, we already know that..

        • @timhobart: And many Kickstarter backers don't. Many companies go off claiming Alibaba products as their own. Fortunately this is by Charbax.

        • @Clear: not really, this particular "discovery" of yours has been discussed by the campaigner for backers to know.. i'm just focus on the device to arrive in my hand and don't care who sells them..

  • nice color..

  • Anyone know how this would go streaming xbox one using the windows 10 xbox app? I would need a usb slot for the dongle for the controllers and a keyboard and mouse dongle for starting the xbox app, would I need a usb hub?

  • +1

Only place them has them left in Brisbane is the City store. Just a heads up.

  • Will this run KODI or iPlayer without issue?
