    Enough to play Pokémon go?

That is the million dollars question nowadays

    • +3

Pogo actually has high requirement for mob game, the Minimum spec should be a SD801 with 2gb ram, even this will lag during menu switch etc, anything less will work but not very playable.

      • +18

To be fair but, these are Samsung devices, so even the calculator app will lag thanks to TouchJizz.

      • +1

        Not sure this is true.

Works on my Galaxy S2, some menus are laggy but it is perfectly playable.

Now battery-life is another story all together…

        • What?? How?? My S3 cant even download the game off play store because it doesnt meet the min. requirements.

        • @jikijiki:

Check the minimum version of Android on the play store. You may need to upgrade your OS.

        • @jikijiki: CM13 is based off Marshmallow so install that if you want to play Go. The S3 has no official OS that meets the requirements for the game.

        • @cmdbash: CM13 ? Never rooted any phone before.

        • +1

@jikijiki: CyanogenMod 13. As long as you read and follow the instructions carefully it shouldn't be too difficult. https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_i9300

        • +1

My cheap garbage $60 Doogee x3 runs Pokemon fine and only has 1 gig ram

        • @cmdbash:
Incorrect. Galaxy S3 i9305 has official OEM 4.4.4 which runs the Pokemon apk with playable lag. I had to download it from a mirror because Google Play dared to say it was incompatible.

      • -2

But iPhones don't have that spec and it works fine.

        • +4

Question is can you get a brand new iphone at these prices.

        • -3

This x 10000!!!!!!!!! I love how people seem to think specs are everything when comparing android to apple. At a certain point, 4gb ram vs 1gb ram will make no difference if the software isn't efficiently coded. In general apple is much better coded/has better support for main stream applications.

        • @nobro25:
thats not what my point was, it was people saying you have to have a really high spec phone when iphones are far from that.

        • @khonfahm: I am not an iPhone fan at all , just wondering why specs are so important for this game.
(got to say I think IOS is terrible to use compared to Android, just awkward in many respects)

        • @khonfahm:

It's not better coded, just more restricted. Android apps can do basically whatever they want in the background, iOS apps can't. There's strengths to each approach but I prefer the former.

        • @PVA: You're right. The iPhones have SoCs that thrive in single core performance, and I doubt Pokemon Go takes advantage of a huge core count, so iPhone are almost at an advantage.

      • Don't forget the all important requirement to have a hardware compass.

    • +3

      Currently playing on s5 mini.

admittedly is is a bit laggy, but definitely playable

  • Great price if you don't already have a Samsung phone. I want to buy the new Samsung Note 7 next month.

    • Did they decide to skip the Note 6 completely?

      • Well the name, yes.

  • as per samsung website it says the J1 mini support ultra saving mode. does this mean it has amoled screen?

  • +4

768MB of RAM is not enough for PokeGo

    • People I know that only ever needed their phones for Facebook and the like are now complaining about how crappy their phones are :)

    • online i read it says u need 2 gig but i have a dodgy $60 doogee x3 with 1 gig ram and it runs fine shrugs

  • never buy a mini phone cos they r poor hardware spec but expect sony compact series cos they r fully equipped.

    • -6

That phone is designed for primary school kids. No adult will use that.

      • +31

I'm 50, my mother-in-law is nearly 75 and we BOTH use S5 Mini, and I love it. I tried larger S5 phone and it was too big to fit in my pocket and carry around. I should mention I am ex laptop and phone tech, and I DO KNOW what I am talking about. Are you one of those people that upgrade your $1000 phone every 3 months? We are not, I keep a phone for two years, at least. I don't play games, but I do have all my banking, email, web browser(chrome), maps, PDF reader, navigation, GPS, camera, google drive, sound level meter, Peel smart remote, Woolworths, Aldi, Fuel checker, Car sales, Xe Currency, eBay, Triple J, tapatalk, and more, and have NO PROBLEM using this phone. I'd have to say you are either ignorant or just WRONG that this is a "kids phone". I don't think it's good enough to be a "kids phone"! ;) They usually need the "latest and greatest".

        • +2

          Lol I like you man.

        • It's a lot like a PC. These days you can spend under $1500 and get a total beast. The people that need more are gamers and people who do audio-visual stuff or have a special need - like record music, or high end photography, videography. Kids generally want better phones because they want to play all the games.

      • +14

        PW just got Wiz'd 😎

  • does this support Samsung Pay. would like to get my $15 cashback from Amex.

    • -1

Yes the S5 Mini does, I have owned and used for for about a year and installed Android Pay this week. But I cancelled installing it when the "agreement" advised my credit card details, and more, will be shared with Google account services and "third parties". Umm, no thanks.

      • Lol then use your CC to buy a Play voucher next time you're at the supermarket or online. Works for me.

      • Can you confirm if it works with Samsung Pay, not Android Pay. They are different.

  • Dammit! No buy for me then. Thanks

  • +2

Telstra just deployed an S5 Mini update last month… to Lollipop. Maybe in another year, you'll get Marshmallow. Or not.

    • +2

Why people don't just buy Nexus phones is beyond me.

      • +2

Because most people get their phones on contract via a Telco. Its up to the Telcos to offer them.

Personally, I've been put off of Nexus now. I have a 5X and its performance is woeful. I have a friend who bought the 6P and is just as frustrated. I now have an S7 Edge in the post, and don't think that I'll even consider the Nexus unless there is a significant difference, let alone trying to forget the hardware and software issues of the current range.

      • My original Nexus 5 is still doing well. But the battery life is somewhat shortened and its hard to source a decent replacement battery.

      • I get what you are saying….if they had expandable storage. It'd be the only device I would purchase.

      • +1

        No decent Nexus phone.

I recently upgraded from the Nexus 5 to the Samsung S7.

I would have liked to stay with Nexus, but I wanted a good camera, battery life and storage capability.

      • +1

There's a recent Nexus for this price!? Awesome, where!?

    • And after the update, all I want to do is go back to KitKat. White screens, Blah! I want my black screens back. And the battery has gone from 5 days to 2 days. Lollipop was a "downgrade" for me.

  • Hey TA, get us a deal on Samsung Gear Fit 2.

  • +1

One of the Xiaomis from recent deals would be a better deal I'd imagine?

    • No NFC may be a deal breaker for some. Especially with all the hype surrounding phone pay.

Xiaomi users will have stick their cards at the back of the phones and "pretend" they have android pay

  • +1

Just upgraded to Galaxy S5 Mini from my faithful old Galaxy S2 (which is still not dead, just can't fit all my apps on it's internal 2GB space).

Battery lasts me 2 days, can do everything, works great.

I'm a technology-enthusiast software dev. 99% of people just don't need more phone than this. It's great for under $300.

    • 99% of people use the phone for games. (Pokemon Go is just the current craze). It's certainly what I see kids using the most. And lots of people use the phone as their primary camera. I don't game much but camera and certain apps I use a lot. I'm suffering withdrawl because my LG G4 is in for repair. I don't think you can speak for 99% of people just because it suits you well.

Also need is a strong word. Unless your job requires it you don't NEED a phone. It may be hard to socialize and leave you stuck in many situations if you don't have one. But you NEED air, water, food, perhaps shelter and clothing. Most people want things beyond their basic needs though. I certainly do.

      • +1

I dont have any games on my phone. Am i part of 1%? I prefer YouTube, instagram and reading blogs, chewing through 5gb a month.

I'm a technology-enthusiast software dev. 99% of people just don't need more phone than this. It's great for under $300.

Thats just great marketing. Get your product out there and make everyone want it. Otherwise we would all be using boring nokia with just the basics

    • Lol, I also have a Galaxy s2 and is a former software developer. I am keen to give that Pokemon game a go but the s2 is stuck at 4.1 and I can't be bothered loading a custom ROM for it. Seriously considering buying a cheap Chinese phone just for Pokemon.

      • S5 mini said Pokemon Go was "not compatible with my device", so you'll need something a lot more powerful than the S2…

        • +1

I read somewhere that a phone must have 2GB RAM to run Pokemon Go, it's just that the game maker is not making that requirement obvious. The problem with Samsung s5 mini is that it only has 1.5GB RAM.

  • +1

i got a Samsung Galaxy Core Prime from coles for $119 yesterday. Works good. But no ambient light sensor.

    • I went looking for one of these at my local Coles yesterday and they tried to charge me $199 for it.
Saw a stand with them for sale at $119 last week at the same store, is this sale over?

  • +1

The S5 mini is a very capable handset. We obtained several units last year for our Android dev/test platform. I personally found it better than the Moto G3

  • Any good deals for Sony Z3 compact?

  • -2

These are the lowest of the low end scale in terms of shingling.

The Es series is like 4 generation backwards and the other is a plastic toy.

Perfect for bingo nights as most would throw it to the dumps if found as is not worth nothing

  • +1

I had an s5 mini for 1.5 years. Before that I had an s2. I didn't think it was much quicker than the s2 to be honest.

Don't buy it if you want to do things quickly, especially swap between screens and OMG, don't accidentally turn the camera on. Make a cup of tea while you wait for it to return. It drove me mad. Mine also liked to randomly restart itself for no reason.

I bought it purely for the size and it was probably a waste of money … but $275 for it is probably ok if that's all you've got to spend and really want a samsung. Just don't get it for it's processing power ok. It has nada.

  • +1

Make the jump to a Xiaomi, a fair bit less and much more powerful. The Xperia M5 was 300 a while back and is a better phone IMO

    • I was just going to ask how the Xiaomi stacks up against these phones.

My wife and I bought Nexus 4's nearly 2 years ago, but I'm sick of installing batteries in them that last for 6 months and then give half a day usage.

What Xiaomi would you recommend as a replacement for a Nexus 4 user? No game playing, just surfing.

      • +2

        I'd recommend the Note 3 Pro https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256689

Best in class battery life (4000mAh), higher (FHD) resolution screen, and far better performance than both of the phones listed in this post. Also get 32GB of storage which is nice to have. Only real feature you're missing out on is a heart rate monitor, but this app is just as accurate.

    • And how long does a Xiaomi last?

My Samsung from 2011 is still going strong.

      • I don't think anyone really can say for sure, because they have only been popular for a couple of years max, but there aren't too many reports of failures, definitely no more than any mainstream brands

  • I saw the video comparison with S4 Mini on Youtube, believe it or not, the S4 Mini actually has a higher score in benchmark tests..

  • good deal TA,

Any chance on the Samsung S7 Edge deals? I know I missed on some especially the woollies one .. sigh sigh

  • Didn't check the date.
