Wouldn't it be wiser to buy a new Xbox in august for 550 that can play 4K titles?
What does this player do that the Xbox One S can't?

Yup, think you'd be better off with an Xbox One S… gotta be the best value 4k player.

    • It uses unique Panasonic technologies…

twisti, I never knew this (not that I'm in the market for a 4K player). I recently bought a 65" Pana 4K tV from VideoPro. This Xbox sounds a good buy.
Ala the PS3 bluray back ten years ago.

    • Or the new PS4, surely that won't be more than $850 (no release date yet though)

    • Consumers can't get Xbox One S now, but they can get the 4k blueray players now.

It'd be the wisest to wait for PS4.5 as it certainly can play 4k gaming titles not only the 4k video titles.

What this player does (as does the Samsung) that the XBox One S can't do is the following-

      • No Bitsreaming = no Dolby TrueHD, no DTS-HD, no Dolby ATMOS, no DTS:X
      • Only 1 HDMI Output which means for those without a HDMI 2.0a with HDCP2.2 compatible AV Receiver then you will only be able to go straight to your 4K TV

So both of those alone makes the XBox One S out of consideration for me. YMMV.

      • I'd say the vast majority would be thinking the same way as me - happy to save hundreds compared to this and better still get a 'free XBox.'

What a ripped off, who pay this much for a Media player these day. Even for 4K. Get cheaper Samsung.

    • Apparently going via the threads over on AVS the Panasonic doesn't have some of the issues the Samsung is having with HDR titles.

  • Lol.
As people have said. Pay $300 less for a 4K blu-ray player and get a Free Xbox One! :P

    • edyshays- Serious question. Can you let me know where you have seen the Samsung UBD-K8500 for $300 as it is the only other 4K Ultra HD player on the Australian market at this time?

      • He's saying the one s is 300 cheaper

        • Ah. Thanks for the clarification.

      • Lol

He is saying don't buy this. Buy the new Xbox

Play games plus use the 4K video output

  • there's hardly any films out yet lol and a lot of them have little improvement over the blurays. soon as the xbox/playstation bring them out prices of these going to half , hopefully so will the prices of the bigger 4k tvs. just wait couple of months.

My eye sight is shot so everything looks SD to me

    • Know how you feel…

  • I remember when DVD Players first came out they were around the same price (before adjusting for inflation) as were Bluray players.

I could go into a discourse about dvd/bluray demand/supply, 4K tv sales etc, but needless to say, these will drop in price to more reasonable prices, and those with too much money can pay the early adopter tax prices today :) By that time of course 4K/3D or 8K players will be out for $1000

    • I only want one because the new blu-ray spec removes chroma subsampling. Couldn't care less about resolutions, I will probably rip down to 1080 or 720 with with 4:4:4 chroma values anyway. I just want those sweet, rich-coloured-sources.

Pricing like this is what drives sales of 10tb drives. For this price you get a fully functional HTPC to play 4k.

  • On panel TV, 4k alone is hardly worth it at conventional viewing distances.

Even on projectors, some people say that resolution (between 1080p and 4k) is often not picked by people on blind tests. They'll lean towards other variables to make their decision.

With the titles avaliable atm, paying this for a player seems pretty ridiculous. Just like all those people that paid big money for a LCD 4k panel in recent years, to not watch any 4k content anyway. Panels that still don't look as good as 4yr old plasmas (other than OLED).

    • It's not the resolution, it's the lack of chroma subsampling that is the attractive feature of 4k blu ray.

      • While I agree there is more to 4K than just resolution, I think most people on the street will say 'oh 4K, the picture is sharper' and I reckon most of the general population has no idea about chroma subsampling, bitrates or compression technologies.

On the viewing distances raised by Ripped, its a valid point, and I recently discouraged a worker who was considering a 55" 4K OLED .. I asked them how far they are going to be sitting away from it. When he told me how many meters I told him not to bother.

One area where 4K is useful although the destination might be FHD, is cameras. 4K downscaled to 1080P is much sharper than natively recorded 1080P footage, and with 4K you also have far more latitude for cropping, reframing etc.

some people say that resolution (between 1080p and 4k) is often not picked by people on blind tests.

      I'm not a scientist but I think I see a flaw in their methodology…

      • Hahahaha

  • whats wrong with the samsung compared to this? Much cheaper
